The Hororata Parish Spring Fair, held annually on Labour Day, has provided a family fun day out for over eighteen years. Traditionally run from the grounds of the St John’s Stone Church, this year’s event will be held at the Hororata Domain. “ Th e f ai r h as g r o w n considerably over the past six years with more stall holders wanting to attend and people from not only Hororata, but also th e w i d er S elw yn an d surrounding districts, enjoying the event. We have simply out grown the St John’s Church grounds,” explained Fair Committee Chair Lucy Cookson. Cookson “With this growth we need more space for the Fair activities, plus better, safer parking and to get away from the busy intersection of Downs and Hororata Roads. It is a little bit sad not to be holding the fair in the shadow of the Stone Church but the opportunities that the Hororata Domain offers the event are very exciting.” While the Spring Fair will be at a new venue, the 2013 event will feature many old favourites including the White Elephant, second hand books, heaps of family entertainment, food and the Country Auction. Creative Kids will be back again with new categories for school children to display their creativity including sandsaucers, 3D model making, textiles, art

South Malvern Netball began in 1964 at Whitecliffs as far as the present Club knows, the players were mostly young mothers with the junior teams beginning a few years later. There are currently five teams who enjoyed a successful season this year. The Club are trying to find out more information about the history and also seeking names and contact details of former players, coaches and umpires who have been involved in the past, so they can be invited to the jubilee celebrations, which are planned for February next year. Also of interest and greatly appreciated, would be any old record books and team photos. As the weather warms and the days lengthen, the range of produce and products increases at the Darfield Farmers Market. Last week, Heather Valpy brought along her large range of exquisite candles, which are perfect for gifts; while her son, Roman, offered pony rides for the children. There were also cut flowers and a range of quality pictures and calendars from Heather Walker. As usual, during the school holidays, tomorrow and next week youngsters are invited to join the market and sell
any home made products. For kids having a holiday clear out of the toy cupboard, they can bring it along to the Car Boot Sale on October 12th. With the clock change of Daylight savings, the Markets' summer hours are now 9am -12.30pm. Darfield Farmers Market offers all home gardeners the opportunity to sell their produce at the community table. Simply bring along produce at 9am and set the price, then collect any unsold produce and takings at the end of the Market.

Private Subconscious Therapy engages the subconscious mind long--term unresolved emotions. in identifying and correcting long These unresolved emotions are responsible for many of our, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health problems!
How and Why Does It Work? PST works on the basic principle that the underlying cause of a symptom is an unresolved emotion. emotion After an upset the body and mind naturally work to return to a place of balance, when this process is interrupted the body and mind continue to struggle without success (a kind of stuckness). The energy required in this struggle often leads to many of the symptoms listed below and we begin to experience a lack of physical energy, concentration and aliveness. PST works on the understanding that we were not intended to be unhappy or unwell and while we have many balancing or self-righting systems in the body the one that is most frequently stuck or out of balance is the ‘fight or flight response’. This fight or fight response becomes jammed by an unresolved emotion and remains partially open unable to return to a naturally balanced and healthy position. PST can find this emotion (hidden deep in the subconscious) resolve it and as a result allows natural healthy re-balancing occur. Peace returns, often quickly, sometimes gradually.
What Happens in Therapy? The therapy is gentle and deeply relaxing. You will find yourself sitting in a comfortable chair with your eyes closed, totally aware and yet allowing your mind to wander as the therapist gently talks to you. • Emotional - anger, guilt, low self-esteem, shyness, grief • Physical (where there is no organic cause) - skin problems, IBS, muscle tension, fatigue, headaches, migraines, back problems etc • Mental - stress, insomnia, anxiety, depression, post-natal depression, panic attacks, performance & creativity blocks etc • Behavioural - gambling, drinking, smoking, overeating, bedwetting etc

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre r eo p en ed l as t Fr i d a y, September 27th. Th e Cen tr e h ad b een temporarily closed to the public following an outbreak of cryptosporidium, a bug which causes severe stomach cramps and diarrhoea. Test results from water drawn from the pools after they were cleaned and refilled with fresh water in dicated th at cryptosporidium was no longer present at the Centre. Pool users are reminded that it is extremely important not to swim, or bring children to the Aquatic Centre if they have experienced diarrhoea and to stay out of the Centre for at least two weeks after their symptoms are finished. Parents who have children enrolled in swim school lessons will receive credits for missed lessons which can be used in term four. People who have purchased pool memberships will also have their membership period extended by the Centre to make up for the closure period. Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore said, “it’s just wonderful to be open again and we welcome all our users back.” Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey has commended the Selwyn District Council and Aquatic Centre staff for the proactive role they played to ensure the facility is as safe as it can be. “The pool is never the source of outbreaks - the source is infected people who use the pool. People who use the pool must ensure that they do not swim two weeks after having diarrhoea. If they do, they are putting their community at risk,” Dr Humphrey concluded.

Local company New Zealand Vegetable Oil Limited (NZVO) based in Jones Road Rolleston has been producing their wholly New Zealand grown and processed cold pressed rapeseed oil under the brand ‘nZeaola’ (the n is silent) for the past four years. Unlike most other oils nZeaola™ is pressed weekly throughout the year and this ensures maximum freshness. nZeaola™ is obtained from the seed Brassica Napus and if stored under the correct conditions it keeps particularly well. nZeaola™ had an extremely successful stand at the recent Food Show in Christchurch. Karen Brooks of NZVO commented that, “devotees of television cooking programmes such as ‘Nigella’s Kitchen’ with Nigella Lawson and ‘Escape to River Cottage’ with Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall are delighted to find that they can obtain Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil here in New Zealand. In addition we have a lot of participants who, after attending Akaroa’s Cooking School, love and use the product on their courses and want to obtain a supply. Al Brown is also a great advocate here in New Zealand with nZeaola™ appearing in his latest book, ‘Get Fresh with Al Brown’.” Al commented, “...I like its relatively neutral flavour in cooking. It has some great qualities, with the lowest saturated fat of all vegetable oils, half the amount that olive oil has. It also has omega 3 and vitamin E, which does its thing as a powerful antioxidant.” nZeaola is produced from specially selected

GE free, culinary Oilseed rape stock seed, and grown on in the South Island under the NZVO’s own cropping programme from mid Canterbury to Southland. The crop is part of a sustainable, low input farming system grown in rotation with other food crops and is an ideal break crop for cropping farmers. Planted in autumn, it is one of the first crops to be harvested in January. The seed is cold pressed once, the temperature in processing does not exceed 40°C hence it is technically an ‘extra virgin oil’ (this is strictly speaking an olive oil term) and by doing so it retains all the naturally occurring nutrients. Unlike imported oils there is no solvent extraction, deodorisation, bleaching or added preservatives. New Zealand Vegetable Oil Limited was founded by Robin and Karen Brooks who registered concern at how bulk oil was being produced internationally and the poor quality of imported oils found on the New Zealand market. Internationally there is concern with the carryover of the solvent used for bulk oil extraction into oil the oil itself and also the by-products of bleaching and deodorisation. Today Robin and Karen’s passion is the production of a truly healthy and versatile New Zealand Oil product. Oil is supplied to customers, which include supermarkets, the hospitality industry, food manufacturers and Bakeries , throughout New Zealand in a variety of pack sizes from 500 ml to 1,000 Litre IBC’s (Intermediate Bulk Container).
Retail outlets in this area include New World Lincoln, New World Rolleston and it is now in Darfield at the Darfield 4 Square Store, Sth Terrace.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a virus that affects cats worldwide. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of FIV infections in the world. Two factors contribute to this; New Zealand has a high cat population and the great majority of cats reside outdoors, or have outdoor access. Here in Darfield we have been seeing and diagnosing an increasing number of cats infected with FIV. FIV can attack the immune system of cats, much like the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can attack the immune system of human beings. FIV is transmitted primarily through bites. The virus can cause an AIDS - like syndrome, but FIV itself is not typically fatal for cats, as they can live relatively healthily as carriers and transmitters of the disease for many years. In the initial stage of the disease you may notice mild symptoms such as lethargy, anorexia, high temperature, and enlarged lymph nodes. This initial stage is fairly short and is followed by the asymptomatic stage. This is when the cat demonstrates no noticeable symptoms for a variable length of time. Some cats stay in this stage for only a few months, but for most cats it lasts for years. Finally, the cat progresses into the final stage known as the feline acquired immune deficiency syndrome (Feline AIDS) stage where the cat is extremely susceptible to secondary diseases which inevitably are the cause of death. Sadly, there is no treatment or cure for an FIV infected cat. The good news is we can test for FIV and there is a vaccine available that can aid in the prevention of infection by FIV to protect your feline friend. To find out more about FIV and feline aids, come along to our informative evening about FIV/ feline AIDS on Wednesday, October 16th (see advertisement in this issue), or come and see us at the clinic!

Rachel Balchin, DHS Head of Music (left), looks on as the DHS Jazz band performs at the recent Southern Jam competition in Blenheim - the band wowed the audience at the Spring Serenade last Friday. An appreciative audience, over eighty strong, called for an encore from the Darfield High School Jazz Band when they performed in the Spring serenade at Trinity Church, Darfield, last Friday. The wet weather didn't dampen the attendees enthusiasm as they settled in and enjoyed the eclectic mix of artists. The annual concert, sponsored by the Malvern Community Arts Council, and supported by a gran t from Cr ea ti ve Communities NZ, featured local vocalist Dudley Fairbrass, who ably captured the sound and styling of two 1970’s ballads: Jim Croce’s, ‘I’ve Got a Name’ and Neil Young’s, ‘Heart of Gold’ (including the harmonica interludes) and Saba Charles, Charles a promising young talent, who played an impressionistic ‘ A r ab esqu e’ b y Fr en ch composer Claude Debussy. Debussy Both are recent winners of MCAC scholarships. Congratulations to David and Shirlee Sadler, Sadler who encouraged four School of Music students f ro m th e Uni ver si ty o f Canterbury to share their talents with the Malvern audience in the central portion of the concert.

Hilary Hayes played four short works for violin, bringing forth a sweet, singing tone from her instrument, even though she was battling a debilitating cold. David O’Beirne, O’Beirne tenor, exhibited not only his acting talent, but also his ability to sing as well, with a rendition of two opera arias and two Broadway musical stand ards. D avid Sad ler provided sensiti ve piano accompaniment for both the violinist and singer. The musical teamwork of
brothers Jeremy and Stephen Watson was evident in their e n er g e t i c p i an o d u e t performance of two well-known Hungarian Dances by Brahms. Brahms Finishing up the programme, the DHS Jazz Band played up to the Bronze level standard they recently achieved at the CPIT Jazzfest and Southern Jam (Blenheim) competitions. “A most musically satisfying way to spend a soggy Friday night in Darfield,” commented Philip Baldwin, Baldwin who sent in this piece.

Sean Milliken as a scary pirate The last three weeks have been a hive of activity at the new Preschool on Cardale Street, Darfield and completion is very, very close. Early Saturday morning the fort was removed from the current Telegraph Road playground and relocated to its new home, at the new Centre, for its new purpose. It will become the carpentry area. Great for rainy days as children will be able to saw, hammer and drill under shelter of the roof. A huge thank you to Chris Thwaites and Lionel Whitwell who moved the fort, and to Westacre Farms for the use of their tractor. The children were very surprised on Monday to see the fort gone and this created a lot of discussion about moving. The transition has begun. Darfield Preschool and Nursery say a huge thanks to Frews for their help on the ‘BNZ closed for good’ day, Fulton Hogan for their help with the playground, PGG Wrightson for assistance with fencing, Nigel Clatworthy for organising
the sunshade and the swings, Hamish Wright for giving up every Friday to help out, and Bray Street Engineering, Every year a lovely and very generous lady in the district donates native trees for the Preschool four year olds to take home and plant. The children love picking their plant, and often the colour of the pot is the deciding factor! It’s a great way to teach the children about native plants, kindness and generosity as well as a perpetual growing reminder of their preschool days. Darfield Preschool and Nursery sincerely thank their benefactor. It has also been a very busy month for those not directly involved in constructing the new Centre, with dressing up for Daffodil Day, Pirate Day and Dress-up week. Children have visited Darfield Primary School, and thanks to Mrs Cornish they have all had wonderful school experiences as well as a chance to chat with ’old’ friends who are now new school pupils.

With Summer approaching it is a timely reminder to farmers of the benefits of using the Cross Slot drill to maximise returns. Reduces labour and fuel costs and reduces irrigation and evaporation. Cross Slot is the only drill to place fertiliser alongside the seed.

do let these small children go ahead of them, but not with as big a gap as this woman did. I find the possible scenarios very scary. I wonder how to educate young parents, or in fact anyone walking the street with children, about keeping them safe and seen!
Linda Ellwood Rolleston The Editors, Firstly I would like to thank Rural Women for sponsoring the candidates meeting at Darfield on Monday night. It gave me a platform to make public the issues of the new Medical Centre. The opening of the Centre has been delayed due to two major items, the carpark, its access way and the noise insulation between the consulting rooms. After speaking with the doctor I promised him that I would solve the problem and would communicate with the Council. Within twelve hours I was contacted by Council and we agreed on a process that has a positive outlook to solve the problem. The biggest question arising from this issue is, why it was not solved by our elected representatives?

To the Editors: Recently I was looking out the window of my kitchen and saw a worrying sight. A young woman was wandering along the footpath carrying a supermarket bag, she passed our house and was halfway past the next house, when a little kiddie (seemingly on his own) came zooming along on a small, low, tricycle. He was so low, he would easily have been run over had anyone backed out of their driveway! This is a real concern as I know myself, when backing out slowly, that it would be impossible to see this little person! This is a busy street with many subdivisions close by and lots of traffic, trucks etc. The street is already a concern for people having to cross to the footpath, as there is only one side of the road with a pavement in this area. It is already very difficult to back out onto the road, having to watch for vehicles flying around the corner and to avoid them hitting you. To get onto the street, without also trying to see such a small child, below your field of vision, would be an impossibility. The woman should have been with this very small child not so far ahead and particularly with her back to the youngster! I see many young parents walking, mostly taking children to school, and some of them d o h a ve s m al l o n es accompanying them. Others

Teaching childr en abou t gardening not only gives them confidence and skills for life, it’s also fun and encourages them to eat the veges they have grown themselves - a real bonus for parents! King’s Seeds new ranges of Children’s Easy Peasy Seed Selections are specially designed to inspire youngsters to get gardening. The Children's Easy Peasy Vegetables selection contains easy to grow veges they will happily eat at the dinner table; Littlies will also love the Children’s Easy Peasy Annuals flower selection and will wait with bated breath for these beauties to bloom. “We think gardening is a great bonding activity for families to take some time out together,” said Barbara Martin, Director of Kings Seeds. “We designed

these selections with this in mind - to help parents teach their children about gardening and let them see how, with just a little love and care, a tiny seed will amazingly transform into a thriving plant such as a beautiful flower or vegetable they can eat.” With family gardening, everyone gets some sunshine, fresh air, exercise and they work up an appetite! Involve children in preparing the garden beds so they learn along the way. Give them their own spade and get them digging, talk them through why the soil needs preparation (to help the plants get all the

nutrients they need to grow) and why some seeds are sown in different places. Teach them about what different plants need – (such as beans that need a support structure so they can climb) and the benefits of others (such as Marigold flowers helping keep garden pests away). The Spring Show is always a favourite with Club members and even the recent storms did not prevent a good display. Our Ju d ge an d s pe ak er An n Bennington from Lawrence was generous with her praise of the excellent standard of exhibits in the hall. Daffodils were, as always, the star of the show and we had on display everything from Trumpets to Multi Headed varieties. Trilliums and Fritillarias were popular too this year, both striking species, in som e wonderful shades. Blossoms stood out on the tables in all their showy finery. After judging, awards were
presented to: Kathy MuscroftMuscroft-Taylor, Taylor Premier daffodil and Cut flowers Jackie Hill, Hill Premier bloom and Novice decorative Jan Clauson, Clauson Open Decorative. Ann spoke to us of her passion for miniature plants and indeed had some stunning photographs to show us of her garden down in L a wr e n c e . O n e o f t h e ph o to gr a ph s sh o we d her spectacular rockery where of course, little gems seem to thrive. When Ann moved properties she started to move her nursery. Two years taken to relocate her plants is a task in itself. She also told us that she would have to obtain every variety of a certain species
that caught her eye, so she wondered if she should be called a collector rather than a gardener. I would personally need Hagley Park to house my ‘wish list’ of plants; you need great restraint in this gardening game. As always it was a pleasure to welcome friends from other Clubs who joined us for the afternoon and to enjoy the delicious afternoon tea laid on by the committee. Busy times ahead in the garden so do enjoy your labours, it’s not all about hard work. Happy days.

Last Saturday, September 28th, two local brothers gained successful results in the first round of the 2013 Value Cars Nutbuster Extreme Enduro. Held at Woodstock Heights, over the Waimak Bridge, near Oxford, on technical and challenging terrain, the event attracted over one hundred riders from throughout New Zealand. The course through native forest, rocky bulldozer tracks, logs, creek beds and steep hills consisted of a 28 kilometre loop incorporating rocky creeks, shingle screes, beech forest and manuka tracks. It was an extremely challenging course and really tested the skill and fitness levels of all who entered. The event saw riders push and shove their way
