Darfield area, where his parents, John and Ellen Catherwood lived and worked on the family farm. In his junior years he played for Darfield Rugby Football Club, right up until his family moved to Middlemarch/Hyde in 2002. After making the move, Hamish went on to play rugby for Otago U65kg grade, and was then selected for the New Zealand U17 team. He has also taken to the field for Canterbury U18, Canterbury Colts, New Zealand Universities and the Crusader Knights. He is currently playing for the University of Canterbury Rugby Club and is part of the Canterbury ITM Cup, wider training group. That’s a lot of rugby! Hamish’s parents were able to travel to Sydney to watch the match and said that it was a fantastic experience being there, not only to watch their son play at an international level, but also for the main Lions versus Wallabies game. “The Lions’ supporters were outstanding,” commented John.

TV2Kidsfest is coming to Selwyn this month. Over thirty events and activities for children will be happening in Selwyn as part of Kidsfest, which runs from July 13th until 27th, during the school holidays. “We have a great range of activities happening here which will keep children entertained over the holidays,” said Selwyn District Council’s Community Recreation Advisor, Ginny Bowd en . “These include miniature pony riding, learn to skateboard, a kids’ market, spooky magic show and a pirate pool party at the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre,” she added. “We have many children and young families living in Selwyn who look forward to Kidsfest fun. Events are organised by community groups in the district, the Council and local facilities.” “Each year Kidsfest gets bigger and better with more exciting

activities being offered in Selwyn,” added Ginny. The theme of the 2013 TV2Kidsfest is ‘Reuse, Recycle and Renew’ and magazine art sessions will be held at local libraries which will show children how to make colourful artwork from recycled magazines. Some events are free and others are low cost. Booking is required for most events. For information on events and bookings visit www.kidsfest.co.nz, or pick up a guide from a Selwyn Library.

The Darfield Dolphins sporting a selection of the non-itchy polar fleece beanies - in all sizes and colours - made by Judy Hunt and presented to Ronald McDonald House. L to R: Pam Duncan, Judy Hunt, Jacquie Hill, Janet Lilly, Jackie Sime & Gwen Heffernan . The Darfield Dolphins aren’t just a group who get together for aqua-exercise - they have extended their repertoire to include some much appreciated comforts for Ronald McDonald House users. The group recently produced some hearty, warming, nutritious soups for the families using the House which they took with them when they visited the facility. Not only was soup on the menu, but also one Dolphins’ member (Judy Judy Hunt) Hunt had industriously produced a selection of polar fleece, pull-on, beanies in all shapes and colours. These hats are not only soft and warm, but tend not to have the itchiness often associated with woollen ones. Judy had produced a range of headwear in all sizes and colours - something to suit everyone. Along with the hats the group were able to also present three, warm knee rugs, that had been crocheted by Emily Hunt. Hunt Both the hats and

m

L to R: with the knee rugs for Ronald McDonald House are the Darfield Dolphins - Pam Duncan, Gwen Heffernan, Jacquie Hill, Jackie Sime, & Janet Lilly. the rugs were to be taken home, as required, by patients, as keepsakes. The group were thrilled to receive a letter from the general manager of Ronald McDonald House, thanking them for their efforts. It commented that on any given

night there could be as many as twenty six families staying in the House and while for some it could be just an overnight stay, for others it becomes a home for many months. The letter went on to say it was only because of people like the Dolphins that their doors could remain open twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year, because their support ensured that families could focus on what really mattered - helping their child heal. Since opening in 2003, Ronald McDonald House has provided over 100,000 nights of accommodation to more than 2,700 families.

Deputy Mayor, Sarah Walters has declared her intention to seek election as Mayor in the 2013 local body elections. Council in 2007 was my children (then aged 7 and 9) and the many talented and motivated children across the district,” Sarah said. “I wanted to provide better representation and a brighter future for all of them and 2013 is no different. I still think our children are amazing. Our children are high users of council facilities such as libraries, swimming pools, playgrounds, sports fields and

The ‘News’ was almost hesitant to ask the organisers of the recent Antiques Road Show, held at Sheffield, how the event went! The community fundraiser had been scheduled for the very same weekend (Saturday, June 22nd) that the Met Service had predicted horrific weather, and while those on flat terrain to the east weren’t affected too much, those higher up sustained a battering. However the show went on and the turnout, filthy w ea th er o r n o t, w as outstanding. The Sheffield Hall was filled with those keen to gain a valuation on their treasures (or not) and stallholders onsite were also pleased with the outcome. Antique dealer, Dave Raynor took on the role of valuer and there were more than a few surprises presented to him. Many were unaware of the history (or the value) of their items and the stories that accompanied many of the goods, were more priceless than the goods themselves. The pair of Chinese hats and a sword from the Crimean war well

Anyone looking to join a sports club, get some exercise or find a new hobby, it’s now a lot easier to find out what options are available in Selwyn. A new online directory is available for residents listing sport and recreation activities in their area. The directory includes over 180 listings and covers a wide variety of activities including: Team sports like netball, cricket, rugby, softball and football. Dancing, skiing, golf, horse riding, bowls, swimming, archery and shooting. Add to this, martial arts, yoga, walking groups, gymnastics plus many other options. Local sports facilities and a number of classes are also included in the directory. The directory can be searched by entering the name of a township in Selwyn or by entering the type of activity people want information on. The directory lists contact information for the club, activity or facility, a description of what is offered and a website listing, if this is available. The Council’s Community Recreation Advisor, Ginny Bowden, Bowden who co-ordinated the development of the directory, commented that it would help people living in Selwyn to be active. “We have many new people moving to Selwyn who would like to join a sports team, or are keen to find out about what recreational activities are happening in their area for themselves or for their children. Until now it has been difficult for people to get an overview of what recreation options are available to them.” She added that as Selwyn has grown, the range of activities being offered within the district has also increased and many existing residents may not be aware of new activities now available in Selwyn. Groups wanting to list their activity in the directory can email: joy.farrington@selwyn.govt.nz To use the free directory visit www.Selwyn.govt.nz/sportsdirectory

identified as to their original function. Some folk were amazed at what they were told having not known anything about the items they had brought along. There were a number of other surprises including articles purchased cheaply on e-bay and Trade Me, which were valued significantly above their purchase price! Such was the success of the event that organisers have a second Road Show planned for September - hope they’ve consulted the Met Service!

To the Editors: Not impressed with the cows ruining mail boxes on Wards Road! Cow owners need to show more respect for other people’s property.

Anonymous (Name & address supplied) To the Editors: Should the residents of the Malvern district want to pay more rates then I suggest they vote for Mayor Coe and Cr. Morten because they want to spend more of the ratepayers money on their gravy trains, see saws, sewage systems and new foot bridges etc. etc. At highly inflated prices with zero transparency (a pretext of contractors commercial sensitivity). Mayor Coe and Cr. Morten are visiting the local committees extolling the virtues of the ever expanding dairy industry. rights. A loan was completely unethical and immoral on every level and he knows it. His defence is indefendable (sic). They are the spin doctors of the dairy industry arguing that, that industry is bringing in surplus revenue on our trade balance creating employment. And yes that is correct; but does it actually create more employment? And what is the c ost of th is on ou r environment? Darfield's water quality? The tearing down of wind breaks? Putting dams back on the agenda? Dead lakes of Rotorua and Rotoiti? The dairy industry is like any other business, as capital concentrates itself into fewer and fewer hands the farms need to get bigger (eg.16 Crafer farms) to make them more cost effective requiring

less labour. The highly mechanized (sic) nature of that industry also requires less labour than industries such as apple orchards that could very well be a part of Canterbury. Not to mention that an increasing number of those farms are being owned by foreign investors. So where are the profits going? Will a very few get very rich? Sure if we look at the countries (sic) Gross Domestic Product (GDP) it could look very rosy, but dig a little deeper and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that the income does not necessarily get to the masses. That is another myth that needs to be blown!

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe is acknowledging the community, volunteers, businesses and Council staff who helped during the recent flooding and snows which affected the district. “It was great to see volunteers, businesses and the Council working together to respond to the weather and help keep the community operating,” he said. Volunteer fire services helped with placing sandbags in areas where flooding was a problem and by respon ding to callouts. Community response teams of civil defence volunteers helped in their areas, and many local residents and businesses also helped out their community, and supported friends, family and neighbours. Council contractors and Council s ta ff we re k ept bu sy responding to calls and ru n n in g th e C ou nc il’ s Emergency Operations Centre. Christchurch City Council and Waimakariri District Council

also assisted staff in Selwyn with personnel and equipment. “It was pleasing that people heard the warnings about the potential for snow, before it occurred, and had made sure they were prepared,” the Mayor said. All wastewater systems are now operating as normal and residents in these areas no longer need to reduce toilet flushing or water consumption. Flooding and snow has also affected the roading network in Selwyn. A number of roads have been left with potholes or other damage as a result of the bad weather. Council contractors will be working to repair these problems, and repairs will be ongoing throughout the winter. Anyone who has been affected by flooding or storms, who would like welfare assistance or advice should contact the Council on 03 347 2800 or 03 318 8338. Potholes and road repairs can also be reported using these phone numbers.

The Malvern Super 8 Girls have had a great start to the season - after losing only one game in the grading round they were put up to Division I. The team have had two games in this

division losing the first one 3-1 and drawing the second 3-3. Given that four of the girls have never played hockey before they are doing amazingly well and really starting to work together as

a team. They are a great bunch of girls, really committed and their Coach is confident they will continue to do well this season.

Mid week women’s team Back L to R: Jenna Clinton, Ruby Adams, Sarah Talbot, Jane Jenkins, Fliss Redfern, Lisa-Marie Mclean, Carey-Anne Hamilton & Stacey Clinton Front L to R: Ginny Grant, Lizzie Parker, Georgia Gliddon, Joanna Owers, Rogene Wilson & Ashlee Stevenson. Absent: Tammy McMahon, Georgia Dillon, Steph Hillis, Alannah Bell, Jolene Whitaker & Helena Cridge. The Malvern women's team currently appears to be on a much enjoyed winning streak. The team is made up of mainly locals/ex locals with the addition of a few imports from elsewhere. Georgia Gliddon brings some speed and skills up front whilst

Alannah Bell is keeping things in order on the defence. The Clinton girls are again doing a sterling job and Ashlee Stevenson makes a fine goalie. A few of the young ones keep the older ones on their toes, and for a team that doesn’t have a lot of practise, it has

some great games! The team thanks J eremy for umpiring and Jane Jenkins for both umpiring and coaching (and getting told off for doing both at the same time!). Their assistance to improve the team is appreciated.

Promotion/Relegation games, The Malvern and Hurunui Rep Tournament and a hugely successful sale of baking, made for an extremely busy weekend down at the Darfield netball courts on Saturday, July 6th and Sunday 7th. Saturday’s two big promotion/ relegation games were Darfield Cometz vs Darfield MiBs, and Darfield Misfits vs Kirwee Social. Both games were incredibly close, with the MiBs eventually winning by just two goals and Kirwee Social winning by three. The results mean the Darfield MiBs are promoted to the ‘Senior A’ grade and Kirwee Social to ‘Senior B’. Sunday saw Malvern play host to Hurunui for a representative grades tournament. There was a mixture of good wins and losses across the board for Malvern, with the most exciting win being the U15’s against Hurunui U15. The scores were level at full-time, forcing the game into overtime where the Malvern girls were the first to take the two goal lead required for victory. Overall, the results of the day were enough for Hurunui to win the shield. Malvern Netball President, Clare Clatworthy, Clatworthy wishes to thank all those who helped out behind the scenes and the small group of mums who helped out with food. The baking sale and raffle, in aid of new uniforms for Malvern’s umpires, was a terrific success. The last official count had the figure raised at over $900. An amazing achievement

Phone 03 980 4979 DEADLINE 1pm TUESDAY

The Indians asked their Chief in autumn if the winter was going to be cold or not. Not really knowing an answer, the chief replies that the winter was going to be cold and that the members of the village were to collect wood to be prepared. Being a good leader, he then went to the next phone booth and called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is this winter to be cold?" The man on the phone responded, "This winter is going to be quite cold indeed." So the Chief went back to speed up his people to collect even more wood to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again, "Is it going to be a very cold winter?" "Yes", the man replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter." So the Chief goes back to his people and orders them to go and find every scrap of wood they can find. Two weeks later he calls the National Weather Service again: "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" "Absolutely," the man replies, "the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!"
