“My mother-in-law, Margaret Duncan was a huge supporter of Save the Children Fund, as it was originally called,” said J ane Duncan of Darfield who is today carrying on the family tradition. “Save the Children New Zealand, recognised Margaret’s input by awarding her for forty years of service, and this was at least ten years before her selfless work was brought to an end by her death in 2008,” said Jane. “By then she had spent untold hours and utilised a huge quantity of ingredients b ak ing f or th ei r m an y catering fund-raisers and also sold cards from a spare b ed ro om , esp eci all y at Christmas time.” “I became involved after I married her son, Bernard, Bernard in

1982 and came to live on the farm,” Jane explained. “Once our children were old enough to h el p , w e wo u ld of ten accompany Margaret on her many selling ventures to various fairs, shows and other local events. Grandma and SCNZ played an important role in our children's extra-mural education as they practised h and l ing m on ey, d oi n g arithmetic without a calculator, setting up sales displays and interacting with customers. They also learned to give their time and support to charitable causes without expectation of m on etar y r ew ard - an invaluable life-lesson,” Jane added. Although SCNZ's shop in Christchurch’s Cashel Mall was

an earthquake casualty, there is still an active committee in the City and great support from head office in Wellington. “I cannot emulate Margaret's wonderful baking, but I can sell Christmas cards,” Jane smiled! Jane has a selection available but can get more as required. Jane not only works part time locally, but also has business involvement in Christchurch, so sourcing and delivery aren’t a problem for her. See the advertisement below for Jane’s contact details.

Last Saturday’s Hororata Highland Games were an outstanding success and enjoyed by all who either attended or participated. Organisers estimate approximately 6,000 people attended the event along with twelve bands competing, seventy dancers dancing and eighty pipers and drummers doing what they do best - piping and drumming. In the Heavy competitions, Team New Zealand won, with Auckland policeman Pat Hellier reigning champion overall. “The Hororata Highland Games is such an enjoyable event and from my perspective as an athlete right up there as one of the best I have been to. The hospitality shown to us was great, all the competitors had a good time," Heavy Champion Pat enthused. Archery was a new attraction this year and proved to be extremely popular, as was the Kilted Mile which saw Alex Johnson win for the second year running. The Hororata Pie Cart was besieged with seekers of the iconic delicacy and it sold over 1,000 pies on the day. It was a great day out for children who got to compete in

Advisor. “Car crashes are one of the biggest dangers to New Zealand children. We have one of the highest child road fatality rates in the OECD. Around five children are killed or injured every week on this country’s roads. The simple truth is that car seats save lives,” she said. Anyone unsure about their child’s car seat installation, or needing to hire an additional car seat for visiting children over Labour weekend, Plunket recommend getting expert assistance from a child restraint technician. Child restraint technicians are availabl e through Plunket Car Seat Services and at a number of other hire outlets or retailers. The technician can also advise about the best car seat for a child’s age and size, and one that is best suited to a specific car. Children need to be buckled into a car seat every time they are riding in the car, no matter how short the journey. Babies need to be in a car seat from their very first ride. The Grenfell Builders’ team - Ben Grenfell, David Cocks and Peter Anderson (absent Frank Grenfell). Local builder Ben Grenfell will be known to many in the area, as he grew up in Sheffield, and completed his education at Darfield High School. Following his secondary school years Ben embarked on a trade qualification and ten years building experience with DJ Hewitt Builders, based in Christchurch. A company with an enviable reputation for the construction of architecturally designed homes and buildings. Ben followed this period of extensive training with three years working abroad. During this time overseas Ben met his South African wife (in London) and the couple returned to Christchurch, where Ben resumed his employment with DJ Hewitt Builders. Following their marriage and with a baby on the way, Ben, with a wealth of building experience under his belt, returned to his home community and formed his own building company. The first job

undertaken was the renovation of a farm house in the Malvern Hills and the business has continued to grow ever since. Grenfell Builders Ltd has recently undertaken the major building work for The Terrace Winebar and Café refurbishment, as well as a project management role for pre-built sections, plus the construction of a massive and impressive outdoor decking area. “Thanks to Ben and his staff, the whole project came together well,” said the owners of The Terrace Winebar and Café, George and Julie Ridgen. Ridgen “We were impressed with the standard of the workmanship and the Grenfell Builders’ team really went above and beyond the call of duty, working long hours to get the build completed in a very limited time frame,” the Ridgens added. Grenfell Builders limited now

has local apprentice Peter Anderson on board, along with Ben and David Cocks. Cocks Ben’s father Frank Grenfell is also on the staff and together they produce top quality work, backed by years of skill and experience.

Thirteen years after it was first mooted, Central Plains Water Ltd (CPWL) Board have given approval for the giant scheme to become a reality after 90% of Stage I shareholders and over 72% of Stage II and III committed to the 60,000ha scheme. For the scheme to progress it need ed com mi tm en t fo r 18,000h of Stage I and 26,000 ha of Stage II and III. Both thresholds have been met fully by existing shareholders. Chief executive Derek Crombie said that achieving this level of commitment from shareholders is testimony to the phenomenal dedication and hard work put in

by so many over the years. “I’m sure that there were many times when the hurdles seemed too great, so now all that is required is for the board to confirm our construction programme and to allocate shares, which should happen in the next week. To get this high level of uptake for the scheme from the existing shareholders is a fantastic result. This commitment ensures that the ownership remains local. We set a pretty high bar but are now delighted to say that we have managed to clear it,” he said. CPW L h as co m m en c ed engagement with potential

contractors, including site visits and technical briefings. Tenders for the construction of the 100km of pipeline for Stage I close on December 3rd and will be announced in mid February, while tenders for the headrace and 17km-long canal close on December 17th and will also be announced in mid February. “The scheme will become an anchor project for central Canterbury with the ability to generate long term economic and employment benefits. It will be as important as the anchor projects proposed for the central city.”

Limited There have been three deaths an d two i nj ur i es fr o m spotlighting incidents involving deer hunters in the past two decades, suggesting that these are rare events. However, Tracy Wakeford from the NZ Mountain Safety Council Firearms Programme emphasised that no deaths or injuries with firearms are acceptable and all are avoidable if firearms users follow the seven basic rules of firearms safety. “Spotlighting is a legitimate and legal means of hunting game animals and can be done safely providing hunters follow all of the seven basic rules of firearms

safety at all times,” Tracy said. The Firearms Safety Code : Seven Basic Rules of Safe Firearms Handling 1. Treat every firearm as loaded Check every firearm personally. Pass or accept only an open or unloaded firearm. 2. Always point firearms in a safe direction - Loaded or unloaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction. 3. Load a firearm only when ready to fire - Load only the magazine after reaching the shooting area. Load the chamber only when ready to shoot. Completely unload before leaving the shooting area. 4. Identify the target beyond all doubt - Movement, colour, sound and shape can all be deceiving. Assume colour, shape, sound, and

shape to be human until proven otherwise. 5. Check the firing zone - THINK! What may happen if the target is missed? What might be hit between the gun and the target or beyond? Do not fire when others are in your firing zone. 6.Store firearms and ammunition safely - When not in use, lock away the bolt, firearm and ammunition separately. They should be out of the reach of children, out of view and in a secure room, rack or cabinet approved by a Police arms officer. Never leave firearm s unattended. 7. Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms - Good judgment is the key to safe use of firearms.

Hororata Primary School played host to parents, friends, family and guest judges, as well as a range of pets, last Friday. The occasion was the school’s annual open day - an event much looked forward to by all concerned (with the possible exception of the animals themselves!). The day began at 9.30 with the school being divided into their houses, Kahurangi (Blue) Whero (Red), Kowhai (Yellow and Kakariki (Green) and gathered for some creative , ‘tinkering time’. Pencil boxes were m ad e, p ots w er e decorated, and tile mosaics produced.

At 11am pupils participated in an hour session of Jump-RopeFor-Heart, followed at 1pm by Pet Day. The overcast weather conditions were favourable to those who had no option but keep their woolly coats on for the day and it was smiles all round as judges assessed the animals condition and the knowledge of their owners. The supreme pet of the day was awarded to Johnny Hart’s jersey calf, judged by Stuart Oliver with final selection by Melissa Jebson. The day concluded with the School’s annual fundraising cake auction which once again brought in over $1,000.

With Summer approaching it is a timely reminder to farmers of the benefits of using the Cross Slot drill to maximise returns. Reduces labour and fuel costs and reduces irrigation and evaporation. Cross Slot is the only drill to place fertiliser alongside the seed.

Robin Judkins has handed over the reins of his iconic Coast to Coast event in time for the 2014 running of it.

The Darfield Community Swimming Pool opens t o mo r ro w F r i da y , November 15th. T hi s y e a r’s poo l committee have again arranged a season of enjoyable and fun activities and events. The community are also benefitting from some new equipment that has been purchased through m uc h a p pr e c i a t e d s po nso r s hi p f ro m Fonterra. This includes pool equipment suitable for water aerobics and fun gear which was brought into use last season. As well as a pace clock and two time wall clocks whic h have bee n purchased in readiness for the 2013 season. The Pool committee have arranged to have all relevant pool information included on the Selwyn Co uncil website www.selwyn.govt.nz and the only planned closures for the new season are Christmas and Boxing Days, plus January 1st and 2nd.

The 32nd Speight’s Coast to Coast will be held on February 14th and 15th 2014 and more than a few locals will be well into their training for the iconic event. Entries for this 32nd Speight’s Coast to Coast are rolling in, which is heartening news following the Christchurch earthquakes and continuing recession that has seen participation since 2011 drop as people adjusted to difficult times. “Prior to 2011 Canterbury participants always made up more than 34 percent of total entries,” said Speight’s Coast to Coast creator, Robin Judkins. Judkins “But since then they have dropped to almost 25 percent, however 2013 was significantly better with more than six hundred participants, and entries are coming in at the same level for 2014.” Robin is also encouraged by international interest, commenting, “twenty one countries were represented in 2013 and among internationals in 2014 will be a contingent from Great Britain’s Coldstream Guards. International interest in the event that created adventure sports isn’t anything new. The Speight’s Coast to Coast was recently included among the fifty toughest events in the world in the recently released Worlds Toughest Endurance Challenges, by world leading publishers, Bloomsbury (www.bloomsbury.com). In 2014 an American production company has selected the Speight’s Coast to Coast to feature on a television documentary featuring an athlete participating in seven epic endurance events on seven continents. Next year’s 32nd Speight’s Coast to Coast will be something of a new era for New Zealand’s best-known endurance event. In September this year Robin sold the event he founded, to South Island tourism operators Trojan Holdings, whose interests include Guided Walks of the Milford and Routeburn tracks, the Mt Cook Hermitage, AJ Hackett Bungy and NZSki (Coronet Peak, Remarkables and Mt Hutt ski areas). “It’s great that someone like Trojan Holdings have taken up the reigns,” Robin said. “They have a very real feel for the outdoors and adventure, but they also offer the event more stability and the resources to continue growing in the future.” “At age 63 I felt it was time to step back a bit and plan for a more relaxed retirement,” Robin added. “After organising the Speight’s Coast to Coast for 32 years, having a summer holiday like most people will be something of a novelty.” Not that the event’s colourful front-man will be totally redundant. “The Speight’s Coast to Coast is a hell of a big undertaking,” Robin said. “I wouldn’t expect anyone to come in and take over straight away. I’ve agreed to help Trojan oversee the organisation and make sure the quality and safety of the event is continued.” Indeed, the Speight’s Coast to Coast’s creator intends to be watching over hundreds who take on the 243k race across the South Island for some time. “I’ve been shaking the hands of every Speight’s Coast to Coast finisher for more than three decades,” he said. “I plan to be waiting for them on Sumner Beach for at least another couple of decades yet!”

DEADLINE 1pm TUESDAY

The mother-in-law arrives home from the shops to find her son-in-law Paddy in a steaming rage and hurriedly packing his suitcase. "What happened Paddy ?" she asks anxiously. "What happened!! I'll tell you what happened. I sent an email to my wife telling her I was coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home... and guess what I found? Yes, your daughter, my wife, with Joe Murphy in our marital bed! This is unforgivable, the end of our marriage. I'm done. I'm leaving forever!" "Ah now, calm down, calm down Paddy!" says his mother-in-law. "There is something very odd going on here. She would never do such a thing! There must be a simple explanation. I'll go speak to her immediately and find out what happened." Moments later, the mother-in-law comes back with a big smile. "Paddy. I told you there must be a simple explanation …......she never got your E-mail!"
