Kelvin Cole will be the returning Mayor for a Third Te r m, de s p it e f ie rc e competition from five rival candidates. Kelvin secured his win by 435 votes. “I’m very pleased, as there was a strong field of candidates. It was a public vote of confidence in the council, with all sitting members being returned.” commented Kelvin. “I am looking forward to the challenges ahead, and working with the community. The appointment of Deputy Mayor will announced at a formal ‘Swearing-in Meeting’ on the 23rd October. Portfolios will be discussed and arranged at the first meeting in November,” he concluded.

Kelvin Coe Olive Webb, who came a close second in her first election campaign wanted to thank everyone who has encouraged her along the way. “I’d like to thank all those who supported me, who had my

hoardings on their fences, who galloped over the countryside to retrieve them from where gales had deposited them, and who voted for me.” “The election trail was interesting. I utterly enjoyed meeting so many people from throughout the District and hearing their views, opinions, frustrations and concerns. I especially enjoyed hearing people talk of their pride in Selwyn, and their dreams for t h e ms e lv e s a n d t h e ir communities. I intend to not lose these contacts or stop these conversations,” Olive continued. “I wish the new and old Council well. I will continue to be proud of Selwyn’s history and excited for its future.” she concluded. In the Malvern Ward, the two councillor places were won by Sam Broughton who secured a significant amount of votes, and John ‘Jum’ Morten. Morten Sam also wanted to thank everyone for their support during the elections. “It’s great to be re-elected as councillor so I can continue to represent community interests on the Council. Although I was not elected Mayor this time I am pleased with the strong support I received.” John commented he was also very pleased with the results. “The voters showed wonderful support for Sam Broughton. My aim is to be able to communicate more efficiently with me mbe rs of t h e community, on rates, water and roading, in the future.” The News would like to congratulate all those who ran in the 2013 Election Campaign.

The Healthline symptom checker is an easy to download and use app that provides expert health advice and inform ation from Healthline, a trusted source of health advice. The app is available to download free onto Apple iPhones or iPads via a link from the Healthline website or direct from the Apple App store, and is likely to be rolled out to other technology in the future. People find their symptoms from a comprehensive list on the app – for example, ‘rash – widespread’ – or by using the ‘browse by body parts’ option, and the app then suggests a course of action. That could be to call an ambulance, see a doctor within 24 hours or advice on how to manage the condition at home, just as when people phone Healthline.

To the Editors Pets in Town Over the years I have had cats using my gardens and lawns for defecating on, as well as waiting under the bird feeder for any unsuspecting native bird to drop down to the ground for a morsel. Whilst a nuisance, they do not do too much harm, but now I have somebody’s large dog using my vegetable garden as a play ground. In the past few weeks my vegetable garden has been totally destroyed several times. Having tried unsuccessfully to catch the offender in a nice way, to protect my property, I will now have to resort to more drastic measures.’ So’, if this is your dog I suggest you keep it at home at night.

Putting The Cost of Income Protection into Perspective If thirty year old manager, Bill wants to insure his car for $50,000 it will cost him about $630 per year. For Bill to insure $50k of his income until aged 70 it will cost $620 a year. If Bill makes a claim for his car should he write it off, he will get $50k (if it is still current market value) If Bill is unable to work he can claim $50,000 per year until he is aged 70 – a potential payout of $2,000,000! And it is increased to keep pace with inflation. So, for the same cost, is income protection really so costly after all? And can you afford not to have it? If you had an iMoney in the corner of your home dispensing $800 per week I bet you would have it insured along with your iPhone, iPad etc. That iMoney machine is you!!! Creative kids can showcase their artistic talents at this year’s Hororata Highland Games with colouring in and design your own clan shield competitions. Children aged three to five can put their artistic prowess to the test with a colouring-in competition where they are

invited to add their colourful touch to a shield template. For the older children, the challenge is to design a clan shield. There are two categories - ages five to eight and ages nine to eleven - where entrants use a blank shield template to design their very own clan

shield. Entrants are encouraged to think about what makes their family, school, town or country special and unique, taking inspiration from colours, interests and objects that best represent them. Organising committee member Olive Webb said she was looking forward to seeing the creative pieces the children produce. “It’s a great way to get the young ones involved in our fantastic event,” Olive commented.

Fonterra staff collecting litter on the roadside of SH73. (L-R) Tim Mackay, Rebecca Johnson, Fiona Dunphy & Rebecca Nolan. This year Darfield became home to the world's largest milk powder drier when it kicked into gear at Fonterra's Darfield site in August. The plant produces whole milk powder for export to more th an 20 markets worldwide including the Middle East, China and Southeast Asia. As Fonterra moves towards the peak of the milk season, both Drier One and Drier Two are operating at full capacity, running 24/7 and producing 45 tonnes per hour. Drier 2 alone will produce more than 700 tonnes of product every day, which is enough to fill 45 shipping containers. Darfield’s product is destined for export to more th an 20 markets worldwide including the Middle

East, China and Southeast Asia. The increased production has been supported by the addition of the second train to the site, which commenced as planned in September. The increased production has also been made a reality by a concentrated effort from the team of more than 200 staff who manage milk processing of up to 6.6 million litres per day. In the midst of this busy period, Fonterra's site team have found the time to roll up their sleeves participating in the annual Keep N ew Z eal an d B eau ti f u l campaign. This saw 25 staff take time out from their day to pitch in and spend time cleaning up a slice of the Darfield community.

The first ‘Live to Ride’ skills coaching course was held at Rolleston recently. Riders were offered the chance to learn, practice new techniques, plus gain more confidence with slow manoeuvres and riding on the open road. “Participants on the course at Rolleston, all had a great day, and most agreed it gave them more confidence and increased awareness on the road,” trainer Duncan Seed commented. “Registration for the courses online has been extremely steady. However, there are still a couple of places left on the half day course at Darfield on November 2nd. The full day course in Lincoln on November 9th is now full.

“Due to demand, another course has been arranged for the last weekend in November, with the venue is still to be confirmed. Full details will be placed on the Live to Ride website shortly,” said Selwyn District Council’s Road Safety Co-ordinator, Ngaire Tinning. Tinning The skills coaching offered to Selwyn motorcyclists is highly subsidised and all riders participating in a ‘Live to Ride’ course before the end of March 2014 will go into the draw for $300 of motorcycle safety gear.

For more information, contact Selwyn District Council’s Road Safety CoCo-ordinator or visit www.live2ride.co.nz

For the second year running, Fonterra staff picked up roadside litter in support of the nationwide campaign. The SH73 roadside from the site's entrance to the Darfield Township entrance was combed for litter and the staff's diligent efforts resulted in a ute load of rubbish of all shapes and sizes.

No doub t, th e g ener al consensus around the area, when it comes to the wind, is that it can take a hike! This week has seen more storms throughout Canterbury, and with them, more damage and power outages. Chorus has issued a timely reminder for people in the area regarding the use of landline phones and broadband services in cases of extreme weather. Chorus has approx 5,700 “active” cabinets on roadsides around the country. These contain telephone and/or broadband equipment providing service to residents within the local community. These cabinets have mains power which constantly charges

a bank of batteries. These batteries power the phone and broadband equipment. In the event of a power outage, the batteries keep the network services running. In an urban environment there is enough battery backup to keep services running for approximately four hours. In rural cabinets, there is approximately eight hours of battery capacity. This battery capacity provides time for Chorus to confirm with

the local power company when they expect to have power restored. If required, Chorus can arrange for a portable generator to be delivered to the cabinet site to provide power to keep the batteries charged until mains power is restored. The requirement here is that there must be safe access to the site for this to happen. Snow drifts, ice, fallen power lines and trees, road slips, washouts and flooding are some of the challenges that the Chorus work crews face while delivering generators during a major storm event. Chorus has partnered with Federated Farmers to locate portable generators with farmers in some very remote South Island locations. In the event of a major snowstorm where access may be delayed for days, the farmer can take the generator down to their local cabinet, plug it in and keep the equipment running until the power is restored. One of the biggest nuisance’s for residents in a power outage is that their cordless home phone stops working. In areas where power outages are common, Chorus advises residents to have a hard-wired phone somewhere in the house so that even if they lose power to the house they can still use the phone service if power to the network is available. As always, if emergency assistance is required, call 111 without delay.

Kelvin Kimber Federated Farmers is looking to ascertain the extent of wind related damage in rural Canterbury after the storm that hit early hours on Monday morning. “Lightning may not strike twice in the same spot but it appears the wind can,” says Chris Allen, Allen Fed er ated Far mers MidCanterbury Provincial President.

“Five weeks on from the last wind storm we may be back to square one. At least the MetService gave us a warning last week that this wind was on the cards.” “All downed power lines need to be treated as live. Farmers are encouraged to ring their local lines company to report faults which will speed repair. When it

comes to downed trees safety is paramount, especially with the current unstable weather,” Chris continued. If anyone has any concerns relating to the latest storm please ring the Federated Farmers Adverse Events line 0800 376 844. You do not have to be a member to leave details.

in Selwyn District. It allows for people to sample wine and fresh local produce, and dine at cafes and restaurants. Selwyn District Tourism Advisor Elizabeth Pitcorn says that Selwyn is becoming increasingly well known as a fantastic wine growing area. “Our high sunshine hours and low rainfall are ideal for producing top quality wines and fantastic fresh produce.” Elizabeth says that the trail has been extremely popular. “Many of the wineries and gourmet cafes that operate in Selwyn have only opened in the past few years, so it’s very exciting for people living in Selwyn and Canterbury to be able to discover so many new wineries and dining options on their doorstep.

The trail attracts day trippers and both domestic and international tourists to Selwyn. “Due to it being self-guided and mapped people can spend as much time as they wish visiting cafes, restaurants and wineries, and can also be completed over several visits,” Elizabeth adds. The Best of Wine Awards are run by the Great Wine Capitals Network. The regional award winners from the Best of Wine Tourism Awards now go on to compete against others from the network’s cities and wine regions at the international awards in Nap a Valley, California. Synlait Milk is proud to have been able to help the local Volunteer Fire Brigade in Dunsandel by funding the purchase of a brand new emergency response vehicle that will be used to support the community. The vehicle was officially handed over to the Brigade recently by Synlait Milk Managing Director John Penno who said Synlait Milk was happy to respond to a call for help from such an important local service provider. “Being able to give something back to our local community, which we are committed to, means a lot to us,” John said. Chief Fire Officer Ian Chatterton commented that being able to provide additional support to

the existing fire appliance and water tanker when responding to local emergencies is a great boost to the Brigade. “The support Synlait Milk has given to our local brigade has been fantastic. The vehicle will be used to respond to emergencies in all weather conditions and allow us to access remote areas, secure the scene of motor vehicle accidents faster, and respond to medical emergencies in support of ambulance services.” “We will use the vehicle for nonemergency events within the local community, like fire safety promotions and the fire wise programme at schools,” Ian added. The Brigade would also like to

Page 13

acknowledge contributions from th e b ro ad er Du ns and el community with $15,000 having been raised to date. “With the funds raised, the Brigade is looking to procure essentials including medical equipment, r o ad s af ety equ ip m en t, ch ai n s aw s , h and to o l s and personnel protection equipment. Parking facility plans are also being put in place to construct a garage next to the existing fire station,” Ian said.

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre has won two awards at the 2013 Canterbury Architecture Awards. The Aquatic Centre won a Public Architecture and a Sustainable Architecture award. Judges praised the centre’s clear and direct design concept, the building’s sense of lightness, the extensive use of natural light along the full length of the façade and the heat recovery and ventilation systems, which reduce power use at the centre. The 2,800 square metre facility features an eight-lane 25 metre pool, a hydrotherapy pool with spa area, a learn-to-swim pool and a leisure pool with a lazy river.

Hororata Golf Club Sheffield Garden Club members have been out enjoying gardens around the District recently. On October 1st, thirty members visited three gardens; The first stop of the day was the Orchid Garden, where the owner spoke about growing orchids, followed by a viewing of the flowers. Members were given the opportunity to purchase some of these flowers. Next followed a relaxing lunch at the Wedding Chapel near West Melton and a chance to explore the immaculate grounds. The final destination for the day was to Silva Daffodils, with the owner sharing his knowledge on looking after daffodils. The members of the club were able to order varieties for next year. A wonderful day was had by all. Judith Earl-Williams

DEADLINE 1pm TUESDAY

A husband and his wife were sound asleep when suddenly the phone rang. The husband picked up the phone and said, "Hello? How the heck do I know? Who do you think I am, a weatherman?" He then slammed the phone down and settled into bed. "Who was that?" asked his wife. "I don't know. It was some guy who wanted to know if the coast was clear." One Spring evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence was broken at last by a shaken little voice saying, "The big sissy."
