Last Sunday’s Midwinter Music Session at the Hororata Village Bar and CafĂŠ was what could only be described as an enjoyable and outstanding success. “It was an amazing day.â€? said CafĂŠ co-owner Jarnia Kupe, Kupe “we were so lucky with the weather and a great crowd turned up, with many coming out from Christchurch. The Midwinter Music Session kicked off with Manaia Davies’ rendition of the Black Eyed Peas, "Where is the Love" and at only ten years old the crowd were in agreement that she was an absolute sensation! Manaia performs, and is tutored, at the Moorhouse Dance Studio in Christchurch, but lives in Glentunnel. Next up was Cassie

A recently developed kiwi ecotourism enterprise is on the hunt for suitable local lease sites to build its futuristic ‘glass box hotel suites’. Paul Sapsford is CEO of PurePods Ltd, which last year built the first of its innovative tourist accommodation ‘pods’ on a site near Little River. They are now ready to take it into other parts of the South Island. Paul explained, “we are looking for Malvern area landowners in order to extend the opportunity for more international and domestic visitors to enjoy New Zealand’s natural environment.” An off-the-grid luxury hotel suite in a glass box, the PurePod’s transparent floor, ceiling and walls immerses its guests in the landscape. Paul added that leasing to PurePods provides landowners with a double benefit: financial and environmental. “For the owners of land that is secluded and commands spectacular views, leasing for a PurePod o ff e r s a n o n - i n t r u s iv e , sustainable revenue stream, with minimal initial outlay. We are keen to hear from people who share our values of sustainability and who are committed to conservation, for example through a covenant or area set aside for regeneration.

“If we can work together, property owners stand to gain significant revenue, derived from lease income, plus providing services such as housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and food. “For anyone who has custody of a secret slice of New Zealand that others might like to enjoy, and that they are prepared to share, we are keen to discuss working together. “The land needs to offer privacy. In other words it is a long way from roads, other buildings are not located nearby, or in view of the PurePod. Part of our guest experience is a walk of 10-30 minutes into the PurePod through a natural setting,” Paul added. Offering ‘a nature-based total immersion experience,’ the Little River PurePod has received rave reviews from visitors the world over and recently it featured in renowned global tourist publication ‘Conde Naste Traveller,’ which described it as follows: “Views are the point of this futuristic, freestanding glass box in a wraparound of sky and native New Zealand bush… It
isn’t a hotel, or even close, though it’s luxurious and wellequipped. It’s just you: the great outdoors and your selfcontained retreat from the world, where solar power makes everything work, worms take care of the waste and filtered rainwater is piped from the shearing shed of a nearby farm. Otherwise there’s no one for miles.” See advertisement in this issue for contact and website details.
Paul Sapsford enjoys the glass surrounded tranquillity of a PurePod - which could be coming to Malvern.

Darfield’s newest business is a revolution in more ways than just its name. The brand new, professionally manufactured, ‘food truck’ can be found down Darfield’s main street (South Terrace) opposite the currently being redeveloped, Challenge Service Station. The business’s owners (it is locally owned and operated) have taken on board customers’ concerns about the environment and their enterprise runs off the electricity grid, being efficiently solar powered. A well thoughtout solar set-up that never leaves them short of power; regardless of how grey the day is. Further environmental consideration has been given to the type of food packaging used - and wherever possible, unbleached, renewable resource materials have been incorporated. The Burger Revolution is an innovative initiative to provide enjoyable, takeaway food prepared by an international gourmet chef assisted by an Italian Barista, from Milan. Recognising that Darfield’s population is growing, that road traffic is increasing and that folk enjoy choices, the food truck offers a wide and varied choice of gourmet, takeaway burgers, plus coffee and drinks. The food truck is located where parking is easy, but order over $20 worth of food, live in Darfield, and your order can be delivered to your door. In line with the business’s desire to accommodate customers’ requirements - Gluten Free and Vegetarian options are available - check their menu for full details . Burger Revolution operates from 8am until 4pm - seven days of the week. So far it’s been extremely well received by those both living in the area or driving through it. Working late,
Barista Erika Grimoldi offers a warm welcome and a hot drink on a cold day, while stand-in chef Chris Booker whips up a gourmet delight in the background. or starting early - Burger If this hasn’t got readers’ Revolution is a breakfast option interest - check out their board without compare - as many for regularly changing specials. have already established. Following the damage to the forecourt of the Kirwee Challenge Service Station recently (as reported in last week’s News) Police have spoken to the two males who were occupants in the vehicle at the time of the incident. As a result of this Police have charged the eighteen year old
driver with careless use of a vehicle and driving with excess breath/alcohol limit which has resulted in his licence being suspended for twenty eight days. The vehicle has been green stickered due to the damage it sustained in the accident. The eighteen year old, male
driver, is to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Friday, July 3rd for sentencing. At this stage no charges have been laid against the sixteen year old male passenger of the vehicle. Neither of the vehicle’s occupants have been named by Police.
A Rangiora man has been denied bail and remanded in custody until June 25th on charges of burgling both the
Darfield High and Primary Schools. Police allege the break-ins by Dean Richard Mehrtens, Mehrtens aged
42, both happened on June 5th. In fact they have clear CCTV footage to back up their allegations, as the suspect not only turned on the light in the DHS principal’s office, but then looked directly into the camera, thereby enabling a light, clear shot! “His target, commented a Darfield Police spokesperson, “was cash; which at Darfield Primary School saw the loss of the students’ Lucky Book Club money, as well as a School cash box. Unfortunately these weren’t housed in the school’s safe. The break-in at Darfield High School took place at 4:20am on the morning of June 5th with the Primary School being hit a little bit later.
FINANCE FOR THAT NEW BUILD As new homes are exempt from the Reserve Bank’s 20% deposit requirement, new builds can be a good op on for the ďŹ rst home buyer, as you are also eligible for Homestart and Kiwisaver withdrawals if you and/or your partner have contributed to Kiwisaver con nuously for three or more years. HomeStart grants can be up to $10,000 per person ($6,000 aTer three years, $8,000 aTer four years) and can be used in conjunc on with all your KiwiSaver contribu ons (including employer contribu ons). You are now able to use your HomeStart Grants and Kiwisaver for deposit funds. So, if you are looking at a ďŹ xed price contract of say $500,000 including sec on, and you and your partner have contributed to KiwiSaver con nuously for ďŹ ve years, you would have: $20,000 HomeStart Grants plus $40,000 Kiwisaver Contribu ons (you would need to contact your KiwiSaver Provider to conďŹ rm how much you are eligible to withdraw). Required deposit 10% - $50,000. As you can see, this is well worth looking into, especially if you are struggling to save a 20% deposit – say $80,000 for a $400,000 home. You can do this by way of a â€œďŹ xed priceâ€? contract whereby you get a fully priced contract from a registered Master Builder, and you pay on invoice throughout the build. You need to bear in mind that the bank will charge interest for these par al drawdowns which you need to pay on top of your exis ng rent. Or you can enter into a “turn keyâ€? contract where you pay a deposit and then nothing un l you move in. Repayments Principle and Interest on a fully drawn loan for a build of $500,000 less 10% deposit $50,000 - $450,000 over a 30 year term at 6% would equate to $622 per week.

Planning to meet a definite need in the local market, Kyle Challis has undertaken a new initiative in Darfield’s main street. Kyle, who grew up in Hororata, has tinkered with, and been interested in, motorbikes for most of his life. So it was no small surprise he turned this interest into a career. With eight years experience and the completion of a Level 4 National Certificate, Kyle is well qualified to undertake all aspects of motorbike servicing and repairs. Having assisted locally with
repairs and servicing of motorcycles, and being aware of the convenience of being in the township, Kyle’s new business venture ‘Challis Motorcycles’ is now open on the eastern side/ rear of Bridgestone Tyres at 6 South Terrace, Darfield. “I specialise in farm and trail bikes, but also service and repair road bikes, as well as small engines. I have the ability to access a wide range of parts, to cover most makes and models. Kyle is enthusiastic about the
potential for his new business and with his level of experience coupled with trade knowledge, plus the number of motorcycles in the district - he has every right to be so. He has researched the market, found centrally located premises and is now set to offer customers a high level of service and a competitive charge out rate. Challis Motorcycles will be open Tuesday to Friday 8am until 5:30pm as well as Saturdays 9am until 3:30pm - see the advert in this issue for full contact details.

Children at Annabel’s Three Year Old Kindergarten have long been interested in fire engines and the trained personnel in them. The Kindergarten is often full of three year old ‘Firefighters’ working as teams and extinguishing their ‘pretend’ fires. Annabel’s Three Year Old Kindergarten would like to say a big thanks to Darfield’s Volunteer Fire Brigade who welcomed the children on a recent visit to the Fire Station. Excited children got to clamber up into the cab of one of the fire engines, before going for a
ride in the Station’s old vintage fire truck. It was undoubtedly a treat for all. “The friendly Stephan, Stephan Ken and Linda taught us about fire safety, said Annabel’s teacher Gina Hayward. Hayward We learnt that matches, lighters and candles are definitely only for adults; and smoke alarms need to be in every house, as they sniff out the smoke of a fire. “In the classroom leading up to the visit, we had been discussing what to do in a house fire. I think the firefighters were impressed when the children answered; ‘get out and stay out’, Gina concluded.
Firefighter Stephan Williamson assists Sofia and Guy from the cab of the fire engine.
Children get to enjoy a ride on the vintage Darfield Fire Brigade engine as part of their visit to the Fire Station.

Demand for Agrecovery Rural Recycling services in Darfield continues at high levels encouraging operators to return to the area this month. “We’ve had six highly successful recycling events in the past three years with farmers and growers bringing in well over 6,000 containers,” said Duncan Scotland of Agrecovery. The June event will be held at Farmlands, South Terrace, Darfield on Wednesday June 24th - see advertisement in this issue for further details. “This event, along with our twelve permanent collection sites across Canterbury, provide crucial access to recycling for farmers and growers who want to avoid the unnecessary burning and dumping of plastic. “This is particularly important
following the ban on burning agricultural plastics implemented last year,” Duncan added. “An added bonus for recyclers will be the chance to win a Suzuki DR200 Trojan farm bike which we’re offering to celebrate reaching 1 million kilograms of plastic recycled since Agrecovery started in 2007.” Containers brought in for recycling will be processed in New Zealand, with one of the common uses for the recycled plastic being underground cable cover. To recycle through this event, containers must be 0-60 litres in size, free of chemical residue, dirt and other contamination inside and out, and still have the label on to

The Pasture Cup and the R & D Scott Trophy for best Direct Drilled Crop went to Seaton Farming. The Redfern Memorial Trophy, given to the overall best crop, was won by Pete Morrison and Liz Nattrass for their paddock of Fodder Beet. The judges
commented that this was a particularly weed-free crop that had an even and consistent bulb size. As usual, sponsors provided some great prizes and competition officials thank them for their continued support of this traditional local event.

Hawkins River Transport gave their time and equipment to collect and transfer barley to be delivered to drought stricken farmers in North Canterbury.
Well aware of how adverse weather conditions impact on the ability of farmers to operate their businesses, a group of nine, predominantly from the Sheffield area, banded together to lend a hand to those not faring so well. This group of local farmers donated barley to assist drought stricken farms in the Hawarden/Waikari area. In a well-planned, wellorganised drive, the barley was collected from participating local farms by Hawkins River Transport and accumulated at Judd’s Westacre farm. From here Frews Transport collected the grain and distributed it to where it was needed in the Hawarden/Waikari area, North Canterbury. Not only was the barley all given freely, but both Hawkins River Transport and Frews Transport also donated their time and costs to collect and deliver it. A heartening display of community assisting community.
Frews Transport donated their time and trucks to collect grain from Westacre Farm at Sheffield and take up to Hawarden/Waikari farmers struggling with extreme drought conditions. Pictured with the Frews Truck is George Logan of Sheffield, who was instrumental in organising the effort.

Results - 13th June Every year, Lincoln University offers students, who have acted as leaders in their school or community, the opportunity to develop their leadership skills while undertaking tertiary study. This year the Lincoln University Future Leader Scholars have organised a ‘My Town’ children’s design competition. The Future Leaders want to speak to children in Selwyn about putting forward their ideas for improving the towns and communities in which they live. It may be a child’s school, club house, playground, park or in fact anywhere at all that they would like to see a plan implemented for. It’s a chance to get creative! The competition is open to teams comprised of up to six children, aged five to thirteen. In the lead up to the ‘My Town’ event, the Future Leader Scholars will work hands-on with each group, mentoring them to help develop their project and brainstorm ideas. It will then be over to the group to create a proposal to present, ‘Dragons Den’ style, at a fun-filled ‘My Town’ event to be held at Lincoln University on September 11th. The winning group is expected to implement their project afterwards. There is no limit to how many groups can enter and entry is free. Closing date for entries is July 17th, 2015. For an information pack email: lend.a.hand.lu@gmail.com

Exercise for Seniors 1. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface where you have plenty of room at each side. 2. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. 3. Each day you'll ďŹ nd that you can hold this posi on for just a bit longer. ATer a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags. 4. Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can liT a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level!) 5. ATer you feel conďŹ dent at this level, put a potato in each bag.
