Therein lay a somewhat small problem, in that the weather was so appalling, with snow coating many properties and roads, that quite a few folk just couldn’t get there. Last Saturday saw another successful Darfield Rugby Club fundraising ball. Themed ‘A Night at the Oscars’, it was certainly a night to remember!

Approximately two hundred p eo p l e a tt en d ed , an d imaginations had indeed run wild, if the fantastic costumes on display were anything to go by.

While some opted for more formal attire, the whole event was undoubtedly an enjoyable one, regardless of dress choice.

A s i n p r evi ou s year s , Chr is tchu r ch b and ‘N ew Entrants’ kept the dance floor alive and the music pumping, all night.

Venue designer, Don Gillanders once again transformed Darfield Recr eation Cen tr e, wi th breathtaking lighting and deco rations, which w er e appreciated by all.

The organising committee are to be commended for their efforts both before and after the event.

Organisers extend their thanks to everyone that contributed time and energy to help make the event such a success.

“Special thanks go to Don for never failing to impress with his creative ideas and ability, as well as to the Darfield Rugby Club committee and players for their tireless efforts in helping to

set up and clean up,” said a spokesperson for the organising committee. “We especially thank J a m es S co l l a y , K a r an Hofmeester, Hofmeester Mario Lunjevich and Mark Beattie, for their hard work and assistance. James not only helped with the set up, but also attended to the bar, as well as driving the courtesy van on the night, returning first thing on Sunday morning to assist with the clean up.”

The Darfield Rugby Club appreciate the effort put in by all who worked together to make the night such a success, as well as to the community who attended to support them.

An accomplished group of young musicians will perform in the annual scholarship concert, sponsored by the Malvern Community Arts Council, on Friday, September 27th, 7.30pm at Trinity Church Darfield.

Dudley Fairbrass, Fairbrass a 2012 ‘New Zealand's Got Talent’ finalist, will open the programme. Malvern audiences will also know Dudley as a member of the local band Livewire and West Coasters heard him at the 2013 Hokitika Wildfoods Festival.

Saba Charles, Charles a Darfield pianist, will also perform; she was awarded an MCAC Scholarship in 2012. Brothers Jeremy and Stephen Watson will play two piano duet compositions.

Jeremy, senior by two years and

winner of several prizes and scholarships, has already completed his Mus.B. degree.

Stephen, who is currently finishing a music degree, was placed second in the New Zealand National Concerto Competition in March and played in this year's prestigious Lev Vlas s enko Pian o Competition in Brisbane.

David O’Beirne, O’Beirne tenor, is currently completing his Mus.B. at the University of Canterbury, after spending several years in the southern USA, where he was in demand as an opera and oratorio soloist. He is the deputy conductor of the com muni ty choi r S chol a Cantorum and a member of the NBR New Zealand Opera chorus,

Also performing will be sparkling young violinist Hilary Hayes, Hayes an ex-Concert Master of the National Youth Orchestra, and a member of the Christchurch Symphony and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestras. She gained a second placing in the 2011–2012 National Concerto competition.

The Darfield High School Jazz Band will provide the highly anticipated finale. This year’s band impressed the judges on August 4th at the CPIT JazzQuest competition and came away with a Bronze award. The following weekend the band played at Southern Jam 2013 in Blenheim and Picton, and again earned Bronze for their judged performance.

Darfield Primary School has had two teams qualify to compete in the Regional J ump J am Challenge Championships to be held at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday, September 21st.

The Junior team with Year 2-4 pupils will perform ‘Choco-choc latte’. The Senior team (Year 56 pupils), are to perform ‘Greased Lightning’.

Both teams have been practising their routines hard over the past two terms including holidays, plus before and after school practices.

The top three teams in each category at the Regional Competition will qualify to perform at the National Jump Jam Challenge Championships in Auckland in November and both teams will be trying hard to secure a place.

Parents and pupils can’t praise team coaches Mary Bastion, Bastion Kylie Leech and Kylie Perrin enough for all the hard work and expertise they’ve put in.

“The coaches have been amazing,” said a parent spokesperson, “and they are now busy putting the final touches to the routines.”

A vote for any present Co un cil lo r w ill be endorsement of their performance over the last term. I am seeking your support as Councillor because so many people come to me for help based on my reputation as The People’s Champion.

I ask where were our Councillors when Farmers were required to obtain resource consent to grade their potatoes. I took up the challenge on farmers’ behalf and won against the Council.

The Council planni ng o f fic ers considered that activity commercial, not farming. If I had not challenged, it

would have been extended to almost any farm with a shearing shed, milking shed or even grain silos. Also a developer wanting to obtain water connections, but the price was prohibitive.

Following investigation I found that the exorbitant charges were illegal. Why didn’t our Councillors bother to investigate?

The answer is simple; they couldn’t be bothered to question the Council’s ruling.

At the time of going to print there were still pockets of the district without power and coping with all the disruption that that situation brings.

The News has heard reports of serious building damage to both sheds/barns and houses.

The sound of generators could be heard in most streets and townships at the height of the blackout and for some, who are still relying on them, they have been a lifeline.

For others though, ‘generators’ have been targeted by lowlife thieves, either looking for a quick buck or desirous of easing their own power-less crisis.

Either way it’s appalling!

Those present enjoyed the complimentary coffee and steak rolls and took the time to talk to the Rural Building Solutions team, sub-contractors, and others. M ark Mulholland commented that “the afternoon event was not only enjoyable,

but also that it had generated a lot of local interest.”

The past year has been extremely busy for Rural Building Solutions Ltd as they’ve constructed eight dairy sheds th roug hou t th e g r eater Canterbury region; from Carew in Mid Canterbury, through to Rotherham in North Canterbury.

These dairy sheds ranged from fifty bail to eighty bail rotary platforms.

The new Selwyn Youth Council is looking forward to their role of engaging with young people and representing their views.

“We’re really excited about the formation of the Youth Council and we want to make sure that young people’s views are heard in our district,” commented Youth Council Chairperson Tristan Misselbrook. 18% of Selw yn’s popul ation ar e between 12 and 24 years.

Selwyn’s first Youth Council was formed following a District Youth Forum in May at which attendees voted unanimously to support its establishment The Youth Council is made up of eleven young people aged between fourteen and twenty four who live in Selwyn, and two youth worker representatives.

The Youth Council members are: Michael Anderson (Lincoln High School); Coun ci llo r S am Broughton (Youth worker representative); Rafael Clarke (Lincoln High School); Aaron Donaldson (Ellesmere College); Brock Hatton (Darfield High School); Tristan Misselbrook (Lincoln High School); Daniel Moore (Lincoln High School); Melissa Moore (Lincoln High School); Heather Neill (Lincoln High School); Henry Oliver (Darfield High School); Sarah Pascall (of Burnham, attends Middleton Grange School); George Steele (Lincoln High School); Craig Steven (Youth worker representative).

Tristan added that the Youth Council are also planning to hold a series of conversation cafes in Selwyn towns and will also visit local secondary schools to explain the role of the Youth Council.

“The conversation cafés are a way for us to talk to other young people in a café style

setting which is a relaxed and friendly environment about what issues and projects they think should be priorities. That will help us to identify what projects we want to work on, or advocate for, on behalf of young people,” he said.

The Youth Council will meet monthly and its members will be appointed annually through an application process. Youth Council members will work with the Council to provide a youth perspective on a range of issues and will develop submissions on matters of interest to young people.

A team from Darfield Primary School headed into Christchurch last night (Thursday) to compete in the Christchurch South Schools Literacy Quiz. At the time of going to print the News didn’t have the results but wished them well in their competition.

The Christchurch South Schools Literacy Quiz is an annual literacy knowledge competition which in 2012 had fifty teams from schools around Canterbury entered. Students are required

to answer one hundred questions on children’s literacy from ten categories, with varying subjects and questions in each. The event this year is held at Op aw a Schoo l, Christchurch.

Darfield primary School pupils have enjoyed various activities connected to Literacy Week during the past five days. These included, amongst other things, trips to the library and book character day.

Thirty five members of the Sheffield Garden Club met on Tuesday, September 3rd at St. Ambrose Sunday School, to hear Hugh Paterson talk about seed raising. Those in attendance found this most enlightening. Hugh’s talk was divided into three parts: • Where to get seeds from (seed catalogues, both New Zealand and overseas, and packet seeds).

• How to get seeds to germinate. Some seeds have very hard cases, and take a long time be patient!

• How to care for them after germination and grow on.

Books, catalogues, different containers for seeds, watering systems, seeds and markers were all on display. There were lots of questions for Hugh to give advice on and it inspired the group to have a go. “However remember,” cautioned Hugh, “you need to be patient (even if it means waiting a year).”

Most members took the opportunity to wander around Hugh’s garden next door and discover lots of interesting plants popping up in containers and it was fascinating to see where he germinates most of his seeds.

Hopefully by the time you are reading this everybody has had their power restored. We would like to acknowledge and be thankful for all of our local Fire Brigades and the extra work the wind storm brought with it last week. Because of the disruption the lack of power brought with it, the Area Committee didn’t meet last week so we don’t have up-todate news regarding our new station just yet, but we are getting closer.

A brief explanation of the kilometres the Ambulance travels is: the Ambulance based in Darfield covers the whole of the old Malvern County area, between the rivers and up to Arthur’s Pass. So when the Ambulance is paged it travels to the call and then usually into the Hospital with the patient before it returns to Darfield. Forty eight patients can add up to a lot of kilometres and time away from Darfield.

This year’s Country Fair and Crafts Day on Saturday, September 21st, includes a new feature: “This year, we are really pleased to welcome the Darfield Farmers Market stall holders who are going to be with us in the Trinity Church parking area,” said the vicar of the Malvern Anglican Parish, Susan Baldwin.

Baldwin Events for children attending include paper rocket launching (where children build their own rockets), face painting and a decorated bike/trike/scooter parade that starts at 10.30am.

Vendors’ stalls, both inside the church and outside under gazebos, are open from 9am until 1.30pm and will be heaped

with a wide variety of goods that hold the promise of treasures for all ages, whether browsing or buying. There’s a plant stall to help fill gaps in the garden; used books to browse through; a raffle for prizes and a White Elephant stall.

Traditionally the tasty goodies on the baking stall, as well as preserves, disappear early in the day. Check out the specially made Malaysian treats on offer, as well as the usual tempting aroma of onions and sausages on the BBQ outside, to entice all those attending.

“The Christmas card design should depict the student’s view of ‘A Kiwi Christmas’ and should be on A4-sized paper,” Amy said.

“The prize for the winning student will be a $100 Prezzy card and the student’s school will receive $250. I will also host a morning tea for the student and their classmates to present them with their prizes,” Amy added.

The competition is open to primary school students from Years 1 to 6 inclusive.
