T
he last twelve months have just flown by and once again we, at the News, wish our readers a very Merry Christmas, a safe, festive New Year and a welcome respite from work commitments, school lunches and sports’ timetables! Competition in business is healthy, so they say, and we would be the first to admit we wondered how the changes made to the community newspaper scene in Darfield would affect us. Well we can tell you how it affected us - it’s made us even busier! It’s fantastic to have a thriving business in a thriving, caring community, with wonderful readers who share their stories with us. The changing face of Darfield is wonderful too - it brings with it a vibrancy that quite a number of rural locations would trade anything for. Newcomers to the area, choose Malvern as their preferred place to live and this all adds to the community spirit that is definitely alive and well, around us. Meeting newspaper deadlines is always challenging and we strive hard to get the News out reliably each week. There has been the odd hiccup or two in the form of winds, power outages and machinery malfunctions (we print on-site each week) that have caused a few stresses, but our printer supplier (Fuji Xerox) has helped in some instances and a network of friends and family have assisted with delivery, when that has been necessary. We love to be able to write about the successes, occasional frustrations, businesses and local events that make Malvern our community. The Malvern News office saw the return, this year, of Zoe Robertson (nee Moore) who left us four years ago to have her second son, she came and helped us out before leaving to have her third son - Congratulations Zoe. Business co-owners Jan Crossley and Jan Thomas, plus longtime and very efficient staff member, Sarah Blackburn as well as Lois Haskett, who is a godsend for taking care of the printing and dispatching process, have now been joined by Nicky Dance. Nicky will be known to many in Darfield, has three daughters who are involved in numerous activities in the community and her role at the News is as part of the editorial team. In the meantime we wish each and every one of you a wonderful Christmas and New Year and as we say every year - “of course we won’t allow a drop of alcohol to pass our lips!!!”

The combined Hororata Plunket and Playcentre Christmas party was a much enjoyed affair with the warm water of the Windwhistle School pool a highlight for all who attended and that included the adults! The school playground provided ad ven tur e and cl imb in g opportunities and the children took full advantage of all the exciting equipment on offer. Ice blocks and a visit from Santa Claus (thanks to Roger Parsons) Parsons who got the pressie choice just right, were definite high points of the afternoon. Organisers are appreciative of Windwhistle School’s generosity in allowing them the use of pool and grounds, as well as to Hororata St John’s Parish who donated the sausages for the barbeque, and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Pirates dressed up waiting to hear the results of the pirate hat competition at the Darfield Pool Fun Day last Saturday.
Alicia Duncan and Bianca Duncan (holding clock), the pace clock and two wall clocks at the Darfield Community Pool, were funded by the Fonterra Grass Roots Fund.
Darfield Community Pool Committee held a much enjoyed fun day at the Pool last Sunday, December 15th. The weather was kind and numerous children turned up to ‘have a go’ on the inflatable obstacle course. Fancy dress with a pirate theme was the order of the day and mor e than f ew ar ri ved appropriately attired. However it wasn’t long before they donned their togs to jump aboard. Members of the pool committee Ros Cameron and Leanne Duncan cooked up sausages on the barbecue while music played and children laughed and squealed. There were many splashes as they climbed and then fell/slithered from the inflatable. The inflatable that is part of Selwyn Aquatic Centre can be loaned out to community pools in the Selwyn Area. There was a competition for the best dressed pirate and pirate hat, these prizes were kindly donated by ‘Pool Stuff’. Children at the pool can also ensure they make it home on time, thanks to two wall clocks funded by the Fonterra Grass Routes fund, along with a pace clock able to be used for the 2013/2014 season.

Darfield Fire Brigade’s annual Christmas Party was held last Sunday in warm, sunny weather at the Fire Station. The afternoon of fun was a chance for Brigade members and their families to spend quality time together. It’s often commented on, that it is these families who make many sacrifices to support fire personnel, throughout the year. The afternoon included games, vintage fire engine rides, (complete with siren!), a visit from Father Christmas plus the ever popular lolly scramble. There was a shared barbecue tea to finish off the afternoon which was declared by all who attended, as being a really fun end of year event.

Amanda Taylor from Darfield teaches the Aqua Fit for Life class at the Sewlyn Aquatic Centre. Shape up and keep fit while staying cool over summer by joining an aquafitness class at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. “Aquafitness classes are a great way to get fit in a supportive environment while having fun at the same time,” said Amanda Taylor, Taylor Aquafitness Instructor at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. “Exercising in water is ideal as it puts far less pressure on muscles and joints than other cardio activities. It’s also a great form of exercise in summer when it is too hot outside for other types of exercise,” she added. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre offers three types of Aquafitness classes: High Energy Water Workout, Aquafit for life and Hydrotone. Aquafit for life provides a lower impact workout which is particularly suited to people looking to ease back into exercise. The class increases general mobility and flexibility as well as cardiovascular fitness. It is a mid-pace session that is lots of fun and has activities for all levels. High Energy Water Workout is designed for people wanting anything from an extra push to a 'full on' workout. It is a high intensity cardio and endurance session including exercises to sculpt and tone muscles. Hydrotone classes are held in the hydrotherapy pool which is warmer than the main pool. This is a low impact gentle class which helps built strength, balance and tone. The class is particularly beneficial for those with joint mobility, limited flexibility, arthritis and people recovering from an injury or surgery.
“If you’ve never tried Aquafitness before, now is a great time to give it a go,” commented Amanda. “You don’t need to sign up for a series of classes, you can just turn up and have a go at a class you’re interested in.”

Season’s greetings one and all and a special welcome to all the new arrivals to our district this year. It’s been another year of extr aordinar y growth for Selwyn with all the challenges and opportunities that brings, alongside continuing earthquake recovery progress. The festive season however
Every December I find it hard to believe that it has been a whole year since I wrote my last Christmas message. It has been a busy and exciting year in Selwyn with the region earning the title of the fastest growing district in the country. All
around the district, the recovery from the Canterbury earthquakes is gathering pace, with many homes repaired and businesses re-established in new premises. We have had some setbacks in the form of severe weather that I know has caused a lot of damage
to properties. However, I know that our communities have once again demonstrated their resilience and rallied around to help with the clean-up and repairs. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has offered me support and encouragement this year. I try to attend as many local events as I can, whether it is judging at a local A & P show, opening a new building or attending a volunteer fire brigade jubilee and I really appreciate the chance to meet with you and hear your views. I find it especially heartening to visit our local schools and be greeted by positive and enthusiastic faces of children and young people who are genuinely interested in local affairs. I am very proud to be your representative in Parliament and I look forward to continuing to work hard for you next year. I have been a strong advocate of reduced speed limits around our rural schools and was very pleased when the 40km speed trial that I worked hard to have implemented was extended
reminds us how fortunate we are as we share the friendship and goodwill of our family and friends, and recognise the true treasures in our life as we care and share our values and ideals with others. We owe so much to so many when we think of all the volunteers who contribute to the wellbeing of our community. In Selwyn our emergency services, our sports clubs, recreational, cultural activities and Community Care services are all largely serviced by volunteers. You all contribute so much to the wellbeing of our community and ensuring Selwyn is such a wonderful place to live, work and play. On behalf of the Councillors and myself, I would like to thank all those who have supported us and Council staff in the many activities undertaken during the year. After a particularly busy year I hope we can all enjoy the Christmas break, take time to
earlier this year. More recently I have been advocating on behalf of West Melton students to have measures introduced to promote children’s safety, when boarding and disembarking from school buses. As the Minister responsible for the roll-out of the Government’s Ultrafast Broadband, I have been pleased to see m y local communities of Rolleston, Lincoln and Halswell start to enjoy the benefits of cable. T h e G o ve r nm e n t’ s R u ra l Broadband initiative (RBI) is also starting to make a big difference in Selwyn, with new cell sites at Bankside and Glentunnel switched on this year, providing improved mobile coverage and broadband options for residents and visitors to the area. More new towers are planned for the Selwyn District over the next three years, including at West Melton and Castle Hill and other sites (at Darfield, Leeston, Springfield and Round Top) will be upgraded under the RBI. This year we have also announced new Government funding for many important infrastructure projects around Selwyn including the development of a new agricultural

At the time of going to print Mason’s Drapery in Darfield had Santa’s grotto all ready for the arrival of the man in red. Santa was in store Wednesday and Thursday (1:30 - 4pm) - and it's not too late to see him, as he’ll be in store again today - Friday, at the same time. Above: Rosalie Mason of Mason’s Drapery tries out the Santa grotto in preparation for Father Christmas’s arrival, with her granddaughter Anna Watson (front). The trees were decorated and set-up by Anna and her aunt (Rosalie’s daughter) Judith Walker.

Once again the community gathered in the Darfield Domain, last Saturday, to enjoy the range of talent on offer to entertain them. The ann ual Country Christmas in the Park event enjoyed fine, warm weather, making for a pleasant evening with family and friends. Food and beverage stalls were doing a roaring trade
selling refreshments and these provide local clubs and groups one last chance to fundraise for the year. Performances onstage by dancers, singers and musicians, both adults and ch i l dren , we re wel l received by the large crowd gathered for the occasion.
During the evening the winners of t he best decor at ed businesses/ homes were announced:
Best decorated Shop front : Sugar & Spice Best decorated house: 9 Russell Street, Darfield
Best dec. Childcare provider: Annabel’s 3 Yr Old Kindergarten The highlight for the youngsters and those young at heart would have to be the arrival of Father Christmas. He made a stately entry to the Domain in the Malvern Community Patrol car, before being besieged by children of all ages. Father Christmas had an extremely busy night , speaking to all the children and taking requests - before his work really starts on Christmas eve!
Tyson Williams and Alice performed two songs for the crowd.
Jim Doak and Ivan Button entertain the crowd with song and harmonica playing (obviously not by the same person!).
Hannah Cossey and Poi Heine performed a duet.
Ashy Batchelor from Whitecliffs wowed the crowd with her singing ability at Christmas in the Park, last Saturday in Darfield.
As always the children were excited to see Father Christmas. Father Christmas is pictured here with (L-R) Isaac Jones, Riley Jones and Johnny Barnard.

Another year is almost over, and it's time to look forward to the festive season, and to reflect on the year past. This year has been one of some uncertainty for Darfield Police staff with the New Zealand wide review of staffing allocations having a significant impact on the District. There was a great deal of discussion as to whether Darfield would retain it's three staff, but Darfield Station is pleased to say that common sense won out in the end, and as a result Andy Grant came to join us at Darfield. Police have noticed a reduction in crime over the last year, which we hope in part at least is due to the visible presence of Police in the area. There has been a significant reduction in vandalism around Darfield, which is pleasing. Nationally the trend for crime is down on previous years, but the calls for service made to the Police are up. This is due to Police being called on by the public to fill voids left by other agencies who are not available 24/7. As always we would like to acknowledge, and thank, our colleagues in Fire, Ambulance and mo r e r ecen tly th e Community Patrol, who all give
their time to try to make the District a safer, and more enjoyable place in which to live and play. Alcohol consumption over the festive season is always a concern for Police as there is a direct relationship between alcohol consumption and violence, anti social behaviour, and road trauma. Think about where you are going and how you are getting home. Drinking to excess is unacceptable, particularly when it impacts on others. Drinking to excess and driving is not acceptable under any circumstances, and anyone stopped can exp ect to be checked for al cohol consumption. If you are over the limit, you will be prosecuted. Do not boat or swim after drinking alcohol, and keep away from the oven or BBQ - don't drink and fry. Remember over the December and J anuary period the tolerance for speed is reduced to 4km/hr over the applicable speed limit. Contractors and farmers are also asked to ensure that when they move vehicles on the road during periods of darkness they refrain from driving their vehicles with lights on full beam, and do not drive with spotlights on. While you may believe this makes you more visible, all it does is blind other road users. Also having white spotlights to the rear is illegal. Ensure your vehicle has the necessary red lights to the rear, and the lights are clean and visible

before venturing on the road. All road users, please ensure you obey the road rules, stop completely at stop signs and wear your safety belt. It is the small things that make a big difference in reducing the quantity and effects of road trauma. Lets make this Christmas a really miserable time for the criminals. Ensure your doors and windows are closed and locked before leaving your house or vehicles unattended. This includes if you are going out to the yard or paddocks to work, as criminals only need a very short time to enter your house and steal your property. You may also find you have issues with your insurer if you have not taken reasonable steps to protect your property. If you are going away, consider having an electronic timer to turn lights on and off at night to give a casual observer the impression someone is home. Have your mail stopped, or collected by someone. Think about getting a neighbour to randomly park their car in your driveway to give the property a lived in appearance, and if you are away for an extended period, think about having lawns mown as well. Serious injury or death over the coming period is always that much harder for all involved. Stay safe and well over the coming month or so, and we look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year. Best wishes for the festive season from,
Andy, Tony, Dave Darfield Police..

Darfield Preschool & Nursery are now settled into their new Cardale Street home and its recent official opening was an opportunity to reflect on all the hard work and community support that had brought the building project to fruition. Jane Wright, Wright chairperson of the Preschool Board of Trustees presented a report at the official opening that outlined the early childhood centre’s objectives and history. She welcomed those from the community that were in attendance and thanked them for their contributions. Jane also made mention of the Darfield Preschool and Nursery Boards of the past who set up a charitable trust, steered it through the first twenty odd years with prudent financial management, so that sufficient surpluses could be accumulated for the building project. Jane made mention of the various professional businesses who h ad ass is ted wi th th e implementation of the final
design and build, as well as commenting that the result was a delightful, light, warm and workable building. Jane smiled as she spoke of the contractors and builders who fielded numerous questions and queries from staff and added that it was obvious to see how much pride the build staff took in their work; she hoped they were proud of the contribution they had made to the community. “If you saw where we have come from you would understand our excitement at moving in here,” Jane said. Jane then went on to speak of the amazing playground, constructed using many, many volunteer hours plus machinery and equipment from numerous l o c al co n tr a cto r s an d companies, as well as the much appreciated donation of many trees. “The children are delighted with their new ‘park’ to play in and we look forward to the day when the trees have grown and matured.” Jane enthused.

J an e also gratefu lly acknowledged the staff, “Sally Sally Whitwell, Whitwell Clare Clatworthy and all everyone at Darfield Preschool and Nursery who have worked well above and beyond their job description to bring this project to fruition. It has been a huge undertaking requiring seemingly en d l es s d eci s i o ns an d enormous reserves of patience and energy to enjoy the fruits of their labours.” J ane praised the project management skills of Kirsty Peel who worked long hours to ensure everything was done when it was needed, as well as the funding contributions applied for and made good use of, to complete the project. “As Board members of this charitable trust we have the role of ensuring that the trust’s objective of ‘providing high quality childcare in Malvern’ is met. With the completion of this project we have both secured the future of Darfield Preschool and Nursery and also improved the quality of the care we provide. We have succeeded in creating a better environment for staff and the children who come here, something; we can all be proud of.” “We have all commented on the great feeling you get when you walk into this place. It has been designed and built with a lot of love, thought and hard work from many people and it shows. We know the children and families of Malvern who are lucky enough to be able to use this Centre now and in the coming years will feel it too,” Jane concluded.

Hororata Prim ary School finished on a high note following last Thursday’s end of year Christmas Celebrations which also served as a fitting farewell for their Year 6 pupils who are moving onto Intermediate classes in other schools. The evening started with a presentation and slide show from Principal Marty Gameson, Gameson followed by performance items by the children. These were much enjoyed and proclaimed to be excellent. Chairperson of the School’s Board of Trustees, Rodney Booth gave a recount of the year that was and presented school support, staff member, Penny Oliver with a gift from the Board celebrating her thirty years of service to the school. Guest speaker Aria Maria Molteni Luporini, who was a pupil at the school from 1998 to 2001 and has just completed a double honours degree at Canterbury University, urged the children to be the best they could be.

Readers who participated in the Selwyn District Council Drive Phone Free Survey were entered into a draw to win a $100 MTA Voucher. The survey was run as part of a campaign to remind motorists of the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone. “It was pleasing to see so many people taking an interest in this aspect of driver distraction. The varied tips being shared by local drivers about managing the phone while driving was definitely encouraging,” said Ngaire Tinning, Tinning Selwyn District Road Safety Co-ordinator. The winner of the MTA Voucher was Susan Summerfield of West Melton and Ngaire thanks all those who took part.
Page 21
“Under changes to legislation in 2009 using a phone while you are driving or when you are at traffic lights is illegal,” said Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning. “Using a phone when you have stopped at the lights is a bad idea as many drivers are tempted to continue to finish their conversation or texting as they drive off.” The survey was carried out as part of a wider Selwyn District Council campaign to encourage motorists to drive phone free by not using mobile or hands free phones so that they were
focussed on driving when in a car. While the survey results indicated this was an area where drivers can improve, many people who took part in the survey reported they took specific actions to ensure they were not distracted by a phone while driving. 40% of drivers let a passenger take a phone call if it rang when they were driving, and 27% of drivers usually let their phone go to voicemail. 6% of drivers also turned their phone off, put it on silent or put it out of reach.

Wishing everybody a Merry Christmas West Melton School buses are sporting brand new signs, thanks to safety concerns raised by a group of students and Selwyn MP Amy Adams. Adams The Year 5 and 6 students from West Melton School had reported to Amy in late October their findings that the majority of cars were speeding past school buses, with the fastest observed travelling at 70 kilometres per hour. “I was shocked by what the students had observed, including the fact that less than 20% of the people surveyed by the children knew the correct speed for passing a school bus that has stopped to drop off or pick up students,” Amy said. “Something had to be done and the students had come up with some excellent solutions themselves including the recommendation for signage on the back of the school buses to remind drivers of the

20 kilometre per hour speed limit,” she said. Amy had assisted the students with their campaign by writing letters to relevant authorities including Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe, Coe Canterbury District’s Road Policing Manager, Inspector Al Stewart, Stewart and Associate Minister of Education Nikki Kaye. Kaye “I was very impressed with the students’ concern for their own safety and that of their classmates and I was very happy to help the students make a difference in their local community,” Amy concluded.

Recycling at record levels Each Selwyn household now creates around 108 kilograms less rubbish per year than six years ago. The change is a result of people using their recycling and organics wheelie bins more and their rubbish wheelie bins less. In 2007 only 26% of the waste that was collected was recyclables and organic. In the year to June 2013, 44% of waste was recycled or composted. In the month of October 2013, for the first time, more than 50% of the waste collected was recyclables and organics. “Selwyn residents are thinking about our environment and are very active recyclers which is something people should feel proud of,” said Gavin Sole, Sole Selwyn District Council’s Solid Waste Manager. “Changing the type of bins you use can save you money, and switching to a small red wheelie bin or using bags also encourages more recycling. “A household with a small red rubbish wheelie bin and a yellow recycling or organics wheelie bin, or both, will spend less than a family with only one large red rubbish wheelie bin,” says Gavin. “Using Council rubbish bags is even cheaper.” Gavin commented that sending

2007, we would need to pay an extra $314,000 per year in waste charges.” Households can phone the Selwyn District Council if they wish to change their bins.

Enviro Ellesmere is hoping to start a new tradition in Selwyn by holding an outdoor recycled sculpture competition. Entry is free and open to all age groups with individual, group or corporate categories. “The goal of this initiative is to get innovative and creative ideas out in the open. Our area is rich with super creative clever people and an abundance of resources. We want these clever people (that’s you!) to show us how it is possible to repurpose some useful waste items into marvellous contraptions, big and small. It is a great activity for school children, young adults and adults to participate in promoting kiwi-ingenuity on all levels,” said Jade Arnold of Enviro Ellesmere. “If you have ever marvelled
Page 25
over the creations in movies like ‘Water World,’ enjoyed steam-punk art, fancied yourself as an inventor or had the thought ‘hmmmm’, I am sure there is something I could do with that piece of scrap, then this event is for you. Show us what ideas you have had,” Jade added! Sculptures can be made of anything or any material to be recycled and prizes will be awarded for artistic merit, ingenuity and resourcefulness. The sculpture must either ‘do’ something (i.e. move in the wind) or perform a function of some kind (i.e. be a chair). There are exciting prizes and sculptures will be publicly exhibited in April/May 2014. Winnin g scu lptu res a re intended to be displayed in communal areas. Enviro
Ellesmere is keen to get this competition going so that it might become a yearly event for Ellesmere and an ongoing attraction to the area. Entries close: 31st March 2014 Judging: April 2014.

A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike in English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. “House” for instance is feminine: “la casa”. “Pencil” however, is masculine” “el lapis”. A student asked, “What gender is “computer?” Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether ‘computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be the feminine gender (‘la computadora’) because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else; 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your pay cheque on accessories for it. The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (‘el computador’) because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer, you could have had a better model. The women WON.
