Approx imately 900 horses take part in events during the Christchurch Show, including showing classes, dressage and show jumping, as well as participating in parades in the Main Arena. This provides younger riders with an amazing opportunity to show off their riding skills and compete against other young riders. This year, local rider Sophie Townsend won the Pony Hunter event on Wednesday, achieving

an impressive first and second riding both of her ponies. In the W orking Pony Hunter class on Thursday she again got first and second on both ponies, as well as Reserve Champion W orking Hunter. On Friday Sophie competed in the prestigious Ballantynes Canterbury Open Cup Pony Hunter, which she won on her pony Tallyho Neptune.

She also won the Best Rider in the Canterbury Cup. This rounded out a very successful show for Sophie and her ponies, Summer Fiesta and Tallyho Neptune. Some other winning riders from the Selwyn area were Gus Thompson riding Simply Striking who rode to a second place in the Canterbury Cup and Heather McConchie on Tallyho the J oker who was placed third in the Canterbury Cup. The Canterbury A & P Show boasts one of the country’s largest equestrian programmes so these were ex tremely creditable results for the district’s young riders. Once again, and just in time for Christmas shopping a small group of mainly local women (Pam Pam Duncan, Duncan Carolyne J ones, ones J acqui Sime, Sime Bronwyn Hamilton, Hamilton Katherine Clelland and J uanita McAndrew) McAndrew will offer an unique shopping ex perience at the Selwyn Gallery. Taking place on November 29th and 30th (between 10am and 4pm) the women have put together an eclectic mix of goodies for Christmas. “The support we received last year was outstanding,” said Pam Duncan, “so much so that we’re doing it again and giving locals the chance to shop locally.”

On December 1st changes to the allowable alcohol limit for driving will come into effect. The adult (twenty and older) limit will lower to 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood (.05) on December 1st. The old limit allowed people that were impaired to still be legal to drive and the lower limit reinforces the message to the public that d rinki ng an d drivin g is unacceptable. However, for New Zealand to really reduce the number of people hurt by drink drivers, there are other changes in the way that offenders are dealt with that need to happen. “Catching drink drivers is not the problem. The problem is that what we’re doing once we catch them isn’t working,” said AA Mo to rin g Af fairs Ge nera l Manager Mike Noon. Noon An AA Research Foundation report last year showed that 11,979 or 51.2% of the drink drivers caught in 2012 were repeat offenders. “High risk drink drivers should have to have alcohol interlocks fitted to their vehicles. These

only allow a person who is 100% sober to use the car.” “Alcohol interlocks are devices like breathalysers that drivers have to use before and during a drive. They became a sentencing option in New Zealand in 2012 but, out of 11,692 eligible offenders that appeared before the courts in their first year, just 228 received an interlock licence. The AA wants all repeat drink drivers or those caught at twice the criminal limit to have an interlock fitted to their vehicle. The revenue from the fines from drivers caught at alcohol levels

between .05 to .08 under the new limit should also be used to fund more interlocks for the highest risk offenders. “Even with the tiny number of interlocks in use in New Zealand there were still nearly 1,000 instances in the programme’s first year when the device wouldn’t let a vehicle start because someone with alcohol in their system tried to use the car. If we are serious about saving lives we need to have thousands of these in vehicles rather than a couple of hundred,” Mike concluded.

Montessori West Melton School’s recent pet day was deemed an outstanding success with over 200 animals of all breeds and varieties turning out to be looked at and judged. There was a huge increase in the number of dogs making an appearance and these came in all shapes and sizes - but with a common denominator, they were much loved and much cared for. The W harenui was groaning under the weight of all the baking, flowers, vegetables, art and construction work to be Amelia Coyle with her dog - the very cute ‘Copper’. They came judged - and it made for third in the small dog section. wonderful viewing. The School’s Eco Warriors did a and the PTA sold out of ice The day appeared to be enjoyed roaring trade in vegetable plants creams (which didn’t have by all - animals and humans and worm wee (for the garden!!) anything to do with worm wee!). alike.

Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury will un dertake a soil tes tin g programme at a Darfield subdivision to establish whether properties may be affected by historic land contamination. Staff from the two councils visited property owners in the Stanwood Grove subdivision last week to advise them about the soil testing programme and to seek permission for soi l sampling. The testing programme has been established after soil tests results were carried out by some S tan wo od Grove pr oper ty owners. “The recent test results show that at one property arsenic is p rese nt in the s oil a t levels noticeably higher than the national environmental standards and at two other properties levels are slightly higher than recommended levels,” said J ohn Christensen, Christensen Environmental Services Manager at Selwyn District Council. “At this stage we consider the potential risk to residents from any contamination is low. For householders carrying out everyday activities on a property it is unlikely that the level of contamination will be high enough to result in any health issues.” J ohn added that it is likely the contamination is the result of the

Page 5

historic operation of a sheep dip and sale yards, which were in use on part of the subdivision site from the 1880s, up until the early 1940s. “Our priority now is to undertake soil sampling throughout the subdivision to find out more about the other properties, including whether any contaminants are detected, where they are, and at what levels. “Our number one concern is to provide residents with information and to protect their safety, which is why we are talking to the residents and seeking their permission to take samples and carry out the testing programme.” J ohn said the subdivision, comprising 23 properties, was originally developed in 2004 to 2005. Because of the known history of the site the developer was required to provide a site contamination assessment as part of the consent process. That assessment, which was carried out by an independent consultant for the developer, indicated the presence of arsenic, but recommended that it was safe to proceed with the subdivision. Selwyn District C oun cil and Envir onme n t Canterbury will review the original assessment as part of the current investigation, to find out why the more recent testing appears to have produced

different results. Around 20 pr operties in Stanwo od Grove and five properties in the adjacent Pemberton subdivision, closest to where the historic sheep dip was located, will be tested. Selwyn District Council will pay for the testing programme. Environment Canterbury team leader contaminated sites Davina McNickel said specialists will visit properties to collect up to four soil samples at various locations and depths from around from the properties using a hand auger – a hand held drilling tool. She said all sites will be left as they were before the sampling and no samples will be collected from paths, driveways or paved areas. “We will let residents know these results and what, if anything, the recommended nex t steps are, within four to five weeks of the testing. “It is important this is done so people know how to manage their land in a way that keeps them, their family and their pets from being ex posed to potential contaminants.” Davin a said Envir onme n t Canterbury has a legal obligation to identify any potentially contaminated land. A range of information on the testing programme, background to the s ite and heal th information has also been given to residents.

It’s now less than two weeks until South well Ren devouz (affectionately known as Mouse) leaves, with entourage, on an epic trip to W erribee, Australia! Hard work and good breeding has resulted in Mouse qualifying to make the New Zealand Showing Team (NZST) enabling her to go to Melbourne and compete at the Equestrian Australia (A) Nationals on December 5th and 6th. Owners Loretta Tait and her parents Rod and Maureen W atson along with rider Rebecca Rowlands have been working constantly to ensure the trip can go ahead, but prior to leaving they have achieved some massive results on home territory. At the Christchurch Show last week Southwell Rendevouz ridden by Rebecca, won both her Open Lightweight Hunter and Ladies Hunter followed by being named Open Champion Hunter. “Thanks to Lou (Loretta) Tait and the W atsons for letting me ride Mouse and have her at home, she is a once in a lifetime horse and I am very lucky to have her and love her to bits. Y ou are a superstar Miss Mouse,” Rebecca enthused. “Fundraising for the trip has involved quite a bit of work but so, so worth it,” Loretta said. “The recent Market night was a great event, the Kirwee Hall looked fantastic and was decked out with a wide range of good, quality stalls and the turnout was ex cellent too.” “Our classic car poker run was an awesome day, attended by 73 people along with 23 classic ca r s . N e ar ly ev ery o n e commented how well run it was and asked if we were holding

Rebecca Rowlands and Southwell Rendevouz at the Christchurch A & P Show. another one nex t year. The answer to that is definitely yes and we will donate the proceeds to a local organisation. The car run wouldn’t have been the success it was without all the much appreciated support from businesses, both locally and from Christchurch,” Loretta added. A heart-warming story from the day involved an elderly couple who, on their way to the Highland games driving their Armstrong Sidley, saw all the classic cars and decided to join the fundraisers. They won the award for best cruiser, which was especially poignant as the driver was about to relinquish his licence due to health issues. He had owned and driven the car since the day he picked up his wife’s engagement ring. “On the whole we have raised nearly all that we need to get

Mouse to Australia, something we could never have done without massive support from all corners of the country - we have been totally overwhelmed,” S o u th we l l Re n d e v o u z’ s fundraising team commented. “W e have one last show on Saturday - the Courtenay show, then leaving Christchurch on November 26th, driving to Auckland, and catching flights on De cember 3rd before co m p e ti ti o n b e gi ns o n December 6th. It’s ex citing and daunting all rolled into one, but we are not just going over there to make up the numbers, we are going to try and give it our all and make everyone proud of our efforts and of course our beautiful Mouse,” Lore tta finished. 2014 Show President Peter Schnell’s, Courtenay A & P involvement began at a very young age. “My father Trevor was preside nt in 1991, Grandfather Roland Reed in 1955 and my sisters and late mother have shown horses for more years than I can remember,” Peter said. “My i nvo lvem en t b eg an wi th exhibiting pet lambs and riding horses, before becoming a committee member seventeen years ago.” Peter has under taken to ex perience many areas of the S h o w’ s p l a n n i n g a n d organisation. Starting as a car parking marshall, then a trade stall holder and now the 2014 President. “I think I may have missed only one show in my life, and that was when I was on my OE,” Peter said. Fourth generation farmer Peter, along with his wife J anelle raise their three daughters on the family farm. Continuing 120 years of farming in Darfield they

focus on raising Corriedale she ep alon g wi th som e cropping. Alongside this they also manufacture Viking Kayaks. The couple’s eldest daughter, Sarah, works on a dairy farm while the younger girls, Amanda and Kylie are pupils at Darfield High School. The girls have attended the Courtenay Show every year and are dedicated competitors with their pet lambs, flowers, baking and photos. The Schnelles are an ex tremely keen sporting family, and try to make time to attend many events associated with their interests. When Peter has some spare time he enjoys getting out for a Mountain Bike, “keeping up with the kids and J anelle,” he laughed. “or a Kayak, especially during family camping trips.” W hen asked about favourite show memories Peter added that of the many, his memorable top three would be, “being towed around the ring on my knees by my pet lamb, or when

things go to plan. He also hopes to view as much of the show as he can and take time out where possible to speak to exhibitors.

W hen Sharon Kellock decided to undertake the role of Secretary for the Courtenay Show she had no idea of just what a huge job she was taking on. T he p revi ous se cr etary , Adrienne Begg, Begg had held the position for an impressive thirty years and if stepping into her shoes wasn’ t i ntimida ting enough, there was also the fact that Sharon openly admits she doesn’t know much about animals! “I still don’t know a cob from a hack, but it’s gradually soaking in,” she laughed. W ith the role being very hands on Sharon has relied on the support of outgoing secretary Adrienne for advice on the many challenges that have come up along the way. Previous ex perience as a high school IT teacher have been a distinct advantage for Sharon as she has needed to come to grips with the new Showday computer program. Until this year they have relied upon the efficient assistance of Debbie Hewitt, who has input all the entries manually. This was a

huge task each year! “The new specialised A & P Show software has meant a lot of ex tra work initially but will make show planning easier and less labour intensive, for future years,” Sharon commented. Ano ther bonus for bo th organisers and entrants has been initiating the ability to accept entries online. This is the first time Courtenay has done so and it has helped r e d u ce th e wo r k l o a d substantially. Around half of all entries received this year have been lodged online. Debbie continues to be a valuable part of the team assisting on Show day, and will attend to the inputting and processing of results. “W e are ex tremely grateful to her for all her hard work,” Sharon added. Ray, Deb, Jock & The Team wish the Show Committee all the best for a successful day! Darfield Hotel, South Tce - Darfield 03 318 8325 www.darfieldhotel.co.nz Courtenay A & P Show President with some of his farm’s flock of Corriedale sheep. Corriedales are this year’s Show feature breed and have attracted fourteen entries. Ask 2014 Courtenay A & P Association, president Peter Schnell what the Show means to him and he will say that local Shows are a major part of the rural district’s year. “The Show al lo ws mem bers in th e community to ex hibit their animals or produce and ex press their talents and creativity. It’s a s o ci al eve n t fo r l o ca l organisations to be seen at and an opportunity to raise funds. It’s an opportunity for both talented people and commercial businesses, both in the area and beyond, to showcase what they do, or what they sell.” A huge part of the Show’s attraction is brought about by the work that takes place prior to the event. W orking bees, marketing and promotion to name but a few of the background activities that make the day such a success. This year the sheep pens have been moved and rebuilt, a new walking access from the reserve

to the show grounds has been added and there has been attractive planting put in around the water tank. In addition to all this hard work, mowing of the grounds must be maintained and the ring kept watered to ensure it is in top shape on the day. Another important part of the show are the many people who are involved to ensure the day runs smoothly.

A & P Show season is well and truly here again! Last week I enjoyed taking in some of the sights and sounds of the Canterbury A & P Show at Canterbury Agricultural Park. This weekend I am looking forward to the more relax ed atmosphere of my local A & P S h o w a t th e K i r we e Showgrounds. The Courtenay Show in Kirwee is a real country day out, with a great selection of livestock, produce and flowers, photography and art. There are many things for kids to en joy, i ncl ud ing th e fairground rides, animals to pat, and steam tractors, vintage cars and machinery to admire. The equestrian events and sheep dog trials are always particular favourites of mine. Best of all for me, however, is the opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours and chat about what has been happening in the Courtenay community. The theme of this year’s show is, ‘The Future of the Canterbury Plains under Irrigation’ which is a very relevant theme, given the future impact of the Central Plains W ater Scheme on the Courtenay area. Construction of stage one (Te Pirita and Sheffield), covering 23,000 hectares between the Rakaia and Selwyn rivers west of State Highway One, is well under way, and ex pected to be completed by this time nex t year. Stage two, which will encompass 10,000 hectares in Hororata, Greendale and Burnham, is scheduled for completion by September 2016. Meanwhile, it is estimated that the 27,000

hectare third stage covering Coalgate, Darfield, Kirwee and the W aimakariri will take two years to build, with construction s che dul e d to b eg in i n September 2016. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of all those involved in organising this 139th Courtenay A & P Show, including the President Peter Schnell, Schnell and the rest of the organising

committee. Well done also to all of those entrants, young and old, who have worked hard to prepare their ex hibits for the Show. I look forward to seeing you at the Kirwee Showgrounds on November 22nd. Please do come up and say hello!

Christmas Cakes Val MacKenzie Kirwee J unior Cricket has operated a stand at the Courtenay Show, Kirwee for the past six years. They sell delicious burgers and much needed liquid refreshments for thirsty and hungry show goers. In addition, the raffles and the famous ‘Chocolate Coin Toss’ keep children and adults coming back for more. Returning this year, ‘Splat The Rat’ will challenge the reaction skills of anyone brave enough to pit their skills (and their bat) against the deviously fast rat. The Club usually raises over a thousand dollars from the stall, which is put towards the purchase of Club equipment and helps cover running costs through the year. Funds raised from the Show also help maintain low annual subs for players. The burgers are made onsite, with tempting fresh ingredients and options to please most

show goers. The bacon and egg burger is a hit with early risers, wh ile a t l un chtime th e scrumptious chicken burgers and tempting beef burgers keep the hungry crowds happy and well fed. No successful Club can manage without the assistance of businesses and the community. Kirwee J unior Cricket has much appreciated support from Ray

W hite Real Estate, Rolleston who supply the tent. The chicken co mes fr om Te ge l a n d Couplands Bakery have also been generous in their support. Most of all, the success of the Club’s stall comes from the wonderful parents who donate their time and creativity to the b ur ger m akin g pr o cess , guaranteeing many satisfied customers on Show day.

Kirwee Model School’s Pet Day was just a little bit different this year with J unior Teacher Chloe Ni cholson organising and running the Kirwee Kids Agri Skills. It was a fantastic day and deemed a great success by all! Agri Skills began at 10:30am

and children rotated around the modules until midday. All of the modules were big hits and many of the ex perts who ran them have indicated that they would be keen to come back nex t year. “That’s always a great thing to hear,” Chloe smiled.

Local farmer, Jeff Cridge, brought along an air seeder to demonstrate to the children of Kirwee Model School at their recent Kirwee Kids’ Agri Skills day

Page 1 3

The modules included Cropping and Seeds run by Sam W hite; hite Fencing - Geoff Rogers; Rogers Animal Health run by vets Natasha and Kirsten; Kirsten Farm Safety - Sam Truscott; Truscott Sheep and W ool Andrea Reid and Deer and Beef run by Simon Earl. Earl The Animal Health module was ex tremely well run by Kirsten and Natasha who are vets from Selwyn Rakaia Vet Services and involved cow organs. Children were given the opportunity to see real cow organs in bags as well as the placement of the organs on a cow poster board. The seed and cropping module, run by Sam from Agriseeds, focussed on a number of different seeds and the final product they grew into. Another module that was a real hit was the fencing module which was run by Geoff Rogers and Mark Sampson. Sampson Children learnt how to swing a gate, put standards into the ground, run a hot wire and then reel an electric fence.

“W e were also fortunate enough to have J eff Cridge bring a piece of cropping machinery to school whi ch g ave chil dren the opportunity to see how seed gets put into the ground,” Chloe added. “The children enjoyed seeing how machinery can aid

the farming process.” “I would like to thank the many local businesses who supported this new initiative and enabled us to award spot prizes to many h a p py chi l dre n , ” C hl o e concluded.

On the Monday after the show all the lambs and hoggets are slaughtered by South Pacific Meats at Burnham and judged again, on the hooks, as one class. There are further prizes for first, second and third, as well as the highest commercial value. “Those interested are welcome to come along for a tour through the works and to have a look at the carcasses,” said Ashley Seaton who undertakes the organisation of the the class convenor Ashley Gift Lamb competition. Seaton.

The Gift lamb, hogget and wool competition is a much appreciated and valued donation from the district. Post entries on the day and every gift goes into the draw for a large list of great sponsored prizes. This competition is a valued source of funds for the A & P Association and the support it receives from local farmers has helped ensure the Show’s success and resource improvements over the years.

2015 Pivot Purchases Call today for designs & quotes Fresh back from a week at the Christchurch A & P Show J ames Hoban is gearing up for his judging role at the Courtenay Show. James credits his father for first teaching him how to assess sheep and this led to getting involved with youth judging. J ames has represented New Zealand in youth stock judging competitions three times - for dairy, sheep and Merino fleeces, but his main interest is the Corriedale breed of sheep. Vice chairman of the New Zealand Corriedale Council, J ames and his wife Maria run Gargustan Corriedale Stud with the family's Parham Hill flock. The latter was registered in 1925 by his great grandfather and the family plan to eventually merge the flocks. W hen asked what makes Corriedales special, J ames commented that they are the ultimate dual purpose breed, capable of producing a heavy, quality fleece which may be suitable for premium wool contracts, while also producing good lambs. They were developed in New Zealand for the country’s conditions and have been a

huge success story across the world. The Corriedale breeders in New Zealand, with stud flocks, a r e p ro d u ci n g a hi g h performance animal which is not the same as it was twenty years ago. A good Corriedale will have a stylish, heavy clipping fleece as well as a good carcass. They need to walk and stand well and be true to breed type. In the last few years J ames has b een i nvolve d wi th th e Ha warde n Sho w, j ud gin g Corriedale ewes and rams, as well as being an assistant judge at Christchurch two years ago. “That opportunity, and the chance to judge at Kirwee have come about through other breeders who have also been mentors to me. They like to see young people involved in the breed and I am grateful for the encouragement.” The News asked J ames if it is difficult being a judge and making those tough decisions on the day. His response was; “It's important to realise that a Show judge will never keep every ex hibitor and spectator happy because it is subjective and people have a range of preferences. On that particular day the judge's opinion is the

greatly appreciated by the Show committee. They number 180 and are brought from Leeston, where they will have already been used for the Ellesmere Show earlier in the year. “Sheep that are used to dogs and the trialling routine, arrived yesterday and I, assisted by four or five locals and their dogs, gave them a work out. W e took them in mobs of ten or so each to establish that they’re going to run as desired, not bolt and cause havoc. Any that had a propensity for that kind of behaviour were marked and won’t be used today. To just use random sheep from a paddock would amount to chaos - they may never have ex perienced a dog as some farmers round up on bikes etc. W e put them through some obstacles to ascertain that they’re ok with the dogs.” For the uninitiated (which includes the writer) - while Huntaway dogs are used at the Christchurch Show, Courtenay only uses Heading dogs (eye dogs). The trialling season begins in January/February - so the Courtenay Show is the last on the calendar, with the Ellesmere Show the first. At the trials the sheep come out in threes and while it looks simple to the untrained eye, there’s been hours and hours of hard work and training, plus a unique relationship between dog and master to get things to this stage.

Recently the Darfield High School Engineering class Y ear 11 made up of the following students Regan Cornelissen, Lucy W ilson, J ayden Ball, Owen Murray, Matt Caldwell, Raj Patel and J ames Baldwin entered in the South Island Schools Grass Kart Competition, held in Timaru. After many hours of work and dedication in the engineering class, the group led by Mr Nugent and with the much a pp re cia ted a nd he lp fu l assistance and ex pertise of Ross Fowler, a grass kart was produced from scratch, with only an engine, seat and wheels provided in its entirety. The students had to build the kart which u tilised engineering, welding, measuring, and lathing, to name but a few of the skills, needed to complete the project. Sponsorship was gained from local businesses to assist with the funding of the enterprise and the pupils are ex tremely grateful for this. The end result turned out to be an amazing replica ‘Postman Pat Van’, complete with Jess the cat, and the theme song to the Pos tman Pat pro gramm e blaring from a speaker! Once fully constructed the Postman Pat van was fitted very carefully to the Grass kart frame followed by some ‘road’ testing in the school grounds, before taking to the competition track at Mountainview High School, Timaru. Po s tm a n Pa t p a s s e d th e ri g or o us , p re -r a ce scrutinisation process before race day dawned cold, wet and windy. The weather didn’t dampen their spirits and the team were ably supported by Mr Nugent, Ross and Marie Fowler along with a great contingent of mum and dads. Postman pat featured well in the slalom, time trial and the relay race and was the leading favourite with cr owds of onlookers. After doing ex tremely well, a starting issue in the last race took the chance of a place in the final away from them. However at the prize giving, held at the race’s conclusion, the team were to be rewarded

With warmer days and more sunshine, comes the risk of strong nor’west winds. “Selwyn residents need to be prepared to cope with these,” said Selwyn District Council Emergency Management Officer, Ryan O’Rourke. O’Rourke L as t S ep tem b er Se l wy n ex perienced its worst wind storm in nearly four decades, with winds gusting over 150 kilometres an hour in parts of the district. The winds caused power outages to 28,000 homes in Selwyn and Christchurch. Power outages lasted over a week in some areas of Selwyn, and the wind caused ex tensive damage to trees and property. Ryan commented that a first step toward being prepared is for people to ensure they check weather forecasts regularly so that they know if strong wind is forecast and can then take steps to prepare their family. “I would also encourage people to join the Selwyn Gets Ready website as it helps communities take care of each other in an emergency,” he said. The website is a database which pr ovides lo cal communi ty response teams with information on who may need help in an emergency and what resources and skills are available in the community. To join, visit: www.selwyn.getsready.net. Orion has been reminding Canterbury property owners of the importance of trimming trees near power lines. “For advice on who can safely cut down or trim trees

phone Orion on 0800 363 9898.” If strong winds are forecast bring outdoor furniture, rubbish bins or cans and anything else that can be picked up by the wind into a garage, shed or indoors. When the wind becomes strong stay indoors, and close window and doors. Check that bottled water supplies, non-perishable food, can opener, first aid kit, torch and any essential medical supplies needed, close at hand. People may also wish to fill bathtubs and sinks with water for flushing the toilet Have a supply of torches and ex tra batteries handy. Do not use candles (as they are a fire risk) or kerosene lamps, which require ventilation and are not designed for indoor use Check the Council website for i n fo rma tio n a nd adv i ce , www.selwyn.govt.nz. If the power goes out listen to Radio NZ for weather information and updates Stay off the roads when a wind storm is forecast - driving is dangerous due to fallen trees, power lines and other hazards. Driving at night after a major wind storm is unsafe and should be avoided as there could be hazards on the road which can’t be seen clearly Do not touch any downed power lines as they may be live. Report these or any power outages to Orion on 0800 363 9898.. Selwyn District Council can be contacted on 03 347 2800 or 03 318 8338 if assistance is required.

Malvern Collie Club Local Malvern personalities will give a dramatic reading of Dickens’ beloved novel, ‘A Christmas Carol’, on Sunday, November 30th, in Trinity Church, Darfield. A local line-up of readers and musicians is being engaged by the Malvern Community Arts Council’s Performing Arts Committee to present the work. Charles Dickens apparently got the idea for this perennial Christmas favourite after visiting the northern industrial town of Manchester, England. The novel, which depicted the notorious poverty of the ‘hungry forties’ during England’s Industrial Revolution, was written in just under six weeks during1843, and sold an astounding 6,000 copies within a week of publication. ‘A Christmas Carol’ became Dickens’ favourite novel, and has received a variety of treatments as Yuletide entertainment. The author himself began presenting it in public readings across Britain, in Paris, and in the United States during 1853. The story has since been adapted for stage, cinema, and television. The Darfield performance will feature Selwyn MP Amy Adams, school principals James Morris and Chris Bascand, storyteller Margaret Copeland, and Hororata’s Kate Foster.
