It’s every sports person’s dream to represent their country in their chosen field and for Darfield High School students Adriana and Regan Cornelissen, Cornelissen their dream came true. They

represented New Zealand at the UCI BMX World Championships, held in Auckland over the week of July 22nd to 28th. The event, held for the first time in New Zealand, was staged at

Auckland’s Vector Arena, with an indoor track being specially constru cted for i t. The Championships attracted some of the best BMX racers in the world, including defending world champions and double Olympic gold medallist, Maris Stromberg from Latvia and New Zealand’s own Olympic silver medalist, Sarah Walker . Over two thousand riders from more than thirty countries took part. Adriana and Regan qualified for the event after racing at th e B M X NZ N ati o n al Championships, held at the Cambridge BMX track over Easter weekend. A particularly noteworthy achievement for Regan at the Nationals was the jumping of a ten metre-long jump, for the very first time. Upon entering the Vector Arena, a first look at the track revealed a course that was tight, had numerous deep jumps, and a

very imposing five-metre high start ramp. Adriana found this particularly intimidating as, when she was on the start gate, she was unable to see the bottom, due to its steepness. The format for the qualifying rounds was that all riders race three races against the same opponents. They accumulated points based on their finishing positions. The top four riders from each group progressed into th e sudd en-d eath elimination rounds, until only eight riders remained for the Main Event (the final). Only these eight riders would receive a world ranking. The race pace was expected to be very fast, as international riders don’t undertake a long and expensive trip to New Zealand unless they like their chances of a good result.

In September, Terrace Downs will host an exhibition featuring two talented artists from the North Island. Jo Gallagher and Sue Dent have come together to produce an exhibition that represents everything that is rural New Zealand. Jo, is an established King country artist who has developed a distinctive style that captures the unique qualities of heartland New Zealand. Her works show landscapes and animals that are special to New Zealand from the north to the south. Sue, is an artist and art teacher from Tauranga who works with a variety of mediums and textures. Her diverse works are fuelled by a constant hunger to experiment with the new. From stunning mares to perfectly plump fruit, Sue’s works show that she has mastered the skill of painting and her works leave viewers with a feeling of familiarity. These artists have both created works that engender a strong sense of pride in the country and a connection to home. This exhibition will showcase New Zealand to travellers and locals in a way that will not only invoke memories but also remind people of what makes New Zealand unique and special. "We are so fortunate to have these two artists travel down from the North Island to attend the opening and they welcome you to come and meet with them and enjoy the delicious buffet and great company that the Terrace Downs opening nights are renowned for," commented Terrace Downs’ Arts Director, Rachael Inch. Terrace Downs Art exhibitions feature a unique opening night where diners can meet with the artists and enjoy great company, along with wonderful music from the soulful Kris Trousselot on the piano. The exhibition opening is to be held on Friday, September

Jason and Jarnia Kupe are celebrating two years as the owners of the successful Hororata Village Bar and Café this weekend, and they’re doing it with a bang! To celebrate the anniversary, they’re hosting a massive weekend of entertainment that will entice everyone, to what is known throughout the district as an awesome venue. The hope is that folk from far and wide will head along to experience what others close-by have been enjoying for the past two years. Stretch Tents will be providing a huge, well, stretch tent! This will enclose the heated courtyard and make for a great function area in which to enjoy the festivities.

Tonight (Friday) kick starts the jam-packed weekend with Ladies Night - half price drinks for all women that arrive wearing a hat. It’s that easy! Saturday night sees local dairy farmers, and members of the ‘South Two Chain Band’ getting everyone up onto the dance floor, playing hits from The Eagles through to Van Morrison, from 8pm. Then to end a great weekend-long party, the Sunday Music Jam is back, with performances from X-Factor NZ star, Cassie Henderson, as well as numerous talented bands and musicians from around the area. “We’re so lucky to have the support of local musicians, and to have Cassie back to perform

again, really tops it off,” said Jason, who has been working hard to ensure that the weekend is a huge success. The Café’s restaurant will operate its usual hours, but numbers will be limited so bookings are essential. There will be a small cover charge on Saturday and Sunday, to help with musician costs, but children under twelve years of age are free. “We are a family venue, so all are welcome. We are really looking forward to everyone joining us for what is going to be a massive weekend”, Jason concluded.

The Selwyn Gallery is dedicating the month of September to exhibiting the work of local young artists. For the first two weeks in September senior students from Darfield High School will exhibit work that forms part of their portfolios for NCEA later in the year. The last two weeks of September are dedicated to primary school art, created in workshops at three local primary schools, as well as during weekend workshops. The Malvern Community Arts Council, with the support of Creative New Zealand Creative Communities Scheme, is once ag ain f aci l i tatin g th es e workshops, which are open to all young artists, and held at the Selwyn Gallery. This is an opportunity for artists aged five to twelve years of age, to learn about fabric painting with the theme of Maori myths and leg ends. Th e two hour workshops will be run by local artist and primary school teacher Vicky Peacock. Peacock Vicky has recently returned from the World Art Games in Europe and ran workshops in the Gallery last year that were very successful. Each workshop runs at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield from 2-4pm and bookings can be made for either Saturday 14th

The Darfield High School students that entered the Mashup Competition, with their LINZ Award for Best Presentation. Left to Right: George Watson, Lachie Marshall, Henry Oliver and Bruno Deans. A team of budding Darfield High School entrepreneurs not only took full advantage of the inaugural Canterbury staging of the secondary schools Mashup competition, but they also took away success with their entry. Held on August 17th and 18th and hosted by Tait Electronics the competition was designed to plan for the creation of a new service using data, presentation and functionality from two or more sources - otherwise known as a Mashup. The Mashup Competition was organised and run by ECAN (Environment Canterbury), with assistance from LINZ (Land Information New Zealand - SDI Programme). Twelve teams of four high school students from around Canterbury got to test their entrepreneurial, IT, business and design skills, then build a business to solve real world problems. A keen group of Darfield High School students saw the opportunity the competition offered, and entered a team made up of George Watson, Lachie Marshall, Henry Oliver and Bruno Deans. Deans Teams were given a list of seven business scenarios to choose from, and the Darfield students chose Catalyst IT’s option ‘to make open source the preferred technology of New Zealand’. Mentors, support, food and lots of internet were in place to help competitors through the weekend, all making for an incredibly exciting opportunity to be involved in. DHS’s Mashup concept was an App called ‘Basalt’. Using a Dutch auction concept, the

seller, aiming to attract buyers with limited spending, offers product at maximum price. The ’auction’ proceeds (downward) until both parties are agreeable and a sale can be contracted. A seller’s commission earns revenue for the App creation company. George, Lachie, Henry and Bruno all impressed the judges with their very effective and unique skit and explanation of their idea. So much so, in fact, that they received the LINZ Award, and $400 for the Best Mashup Presentation. “We were so impressed by what the Darfield High School team had to offer,” commented event organiser, Bruce Fraser. “They really did a great job, and the

p r es en tati o n s k i t th ey performed was excellent. Those boys are a credit to the school.” The competition was well resourced with mentors from local businesses, who spent their time helping direct the teams to consider the wider implications of their idea, how to market it, and how to get it to pay for itself, or even make a profit. The mentors also helped students to prepare and plan for their presentations. “The room buzzed with energy and new ideas, and our students learnt a lot. Some are al r ead y p l an n i n g th ei r participation in next year’s event,” commented Ruth Davey, Davey Digital Technology relief teacher at Darfield High School.

We have heard a lot of media speculation over the past couple of months about low equity borrowing or lifting the minimum deposit for home buyers to 20%. The issue is time. A lender who has borrowed 95% of the property value has a very short timeframe in which to get their loan repayments back on track in the event they lost their job or couldn’t work because of illness. The loan repayments lapse and in a very short space of time, the lending ratio climbs over the property value and results in a mortgagee sale. Someone who has borrowed 80% or less of the property value has a much bigger window to get back on track before the property becomes over capitalised. A mortgage repayment insurance is invaluable for low equity borrowers to prevent this situation arising. If loan payments are kept up, the equity remains in the property and everyone is happy. Many insurance companies offer differing wait periods and length of benefit payments which means you can make your protection meet your budget. This is something you should factor into your expenses when considering taking on a home loan or you could risk losing your deposit and everything you have worked hard for. Most banks will consider taking a guarantee from a third party, such as parents, to raise the equity of a proposal, so please, talk to me today about how you can get out of your rental, into your own home, and keep it!

The information and opinions published are not necessarily those of the Malvern News proprietors. (Unless by prior arrangement, letters to the Editor should be no more than 200 words) [approximately] in length.)

To the Editors: I have lived in Hororata since 1966 and have always been aware of the Centennial Plantation on the corner of Hororata Road and Plantation Road. I understand the area is a Reserve and was planted in 1950 to commemorate 100 years since the founding of the Canterbury Settlement in 1850. Recently the area has been clear-felled. Beautiful 63 year old Orego n and ot her specimen trees are now gone forever. I would like answers to the following questions: On whose authority were the trees felled? Where is the timber? If sold, where are the monetary proceeds which must belong to this district? I look forward to an explanation.

Richard Foster

To the Editors: The cash registers are constantly ringing in Darfield so you’d think all is well. But the roads are more dangerous with much more traffic, trucks and potholes. There are more eyesores popping up, more light pollution and the threat of dams hangs over local communities. Drinking water has more E-coli and fracking threatens the area. Darfield has lost its quaint rural feel and feels like a factory town, just providing food and beds. More tourist dollars probably just pass through now. As council elections loom, what have the current incumbents done? Nothing. They made no submissions regarding the recent large Malvern projects, to assure themselves that the plans would have minimal negative impact on their voters and the environment. When they do respond to emails, they are non-committal. This is because

they represent big business instead of yo u, t he ratepayer. It is why the Council is willing to loan CPW money, whilst in severe debt. So vote for Sam and John if you want the rich to get richer and the quality of life for the rest of us to get poorer.

Name and contact details supplied To the Editors: Today, 23 August, there are half price drinks for all ladies who wear a hat at the Hororata Bar and Cafe. The brochure advertising this offer did not make it clear whether this included alcoholic beverages. If so, why would any lady accept this half-price offer on alcohol when it causes so much harm in people's lives?

More than fifty people attended a public meeting on Monday night to hear and share information about the McHugh Plantation, at the western end of Darfield township. Held in the Darfield High School assembly hall it allowed those present to focus on the history of the forest and allowed for questions around its retention. Brainstorming in groups around tables ensued, to capture people’s hopes for recreation, education and the environment within the area. There was also the option for those present to draw up a plan of what they would like to see within the park. Selwyn District Council wanted to hear the top three priorities for the area, which would be the focus for the initial

Anyone unable to attend this meeting can s til l mak e submissions and the necessary form to do so will be available on the Council website until the end of August. A further consultation session will be held at Darfield High School to capture what young people in the community would like to see at McHugh's.

Following this the working party will pull together the ideas in a draft management plan for the community’s further comment. “We should have this stage completed by the end of the year,” said Councillor, Sam Broughton. “Once the management plan is in place, we envisage an opportunity for volunteers to be involved in practical work in the park, where health and safety allow,” he concluded.

There would be few almost fifteen year olds that have already got, not only their future careers mapped out, but who are also taking steps to make their dreams a reality. Darfield’s Cameron Carter is one of the few who would fit into this category. Cameron and his supportive family have had to deal with more than a few obstacles along the way following the diagnosis in childhood, of Cameron’s Autism. This has in no way affected his passion, entrepreneurial skills or motivation to achieve his goals though. Cameron has been an enthusiastic train lover since he was two years old, initially just enjoying watching trains pass through town. Over the years Cam eron has p r o g r es s ed to f i l m i n g locomotives and their loads, as well as producing specialist train DVDs. He has just released his second DVD entitled ‘Rails Around Canterbury’ - this is on display at Darfield Post Shop and can be purchased for $15. Ultimately though, Cameron would like to be a Kiwi Rail locomotive driver. Being driven by this goal Cameron has embarked on many a train journey and photographed or videoed many more. Not only locally around Canterbury, but nationwide as well. From the

Cameron Carter at the controls (albeit briefly) of the Ka942 steam train - Photo courtesy of Daniel Garland young age of five years Cameron has visited the Kiwi Rail yard regularly, had a ride in a l o co mo ti ve and n o w volunteers with Mainline Steam. All this not only satisfies his railway passion, but also, and probably more importantly, it enables him to learn all he can to be a successful locomotive driver. Cameron has been lucky enou gh to m eet m an y locomotive and steam train drivers and all are always willing to share their experiences with

him. Cameron will be a volunteer on the forthcoming Midland mountaineer trip in early September when the train, with its passengers, will steam across to Greymouth (for an overnight stay) before returning next day. Cameron commented that, "it's not only great doing voluntary work for a organisation, but it’s also very rewarding as you learn a lot of life skills that will be helpful for future employment.”

As the buds open on another Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society is encountering a growing need for services by people who are living and coping with cancer. Services for patients in the Malvern district have been in high demand these past twelve months. Since Daffodil Day last year, the Society’s Canterbury-West Coast Division has spent $80,000 transporting patients to and from cancer treatment. Their Daffodil shuttle ferried 16,539 passengers to the Christchurch Hospital Oncology Service, while volunteer drivers generously provided 3774 drives for Christchurch patients needing a ride to treatment. Sixty drives were provided for patients living in the Malvern district. The Malvern Cancer Support Group has also provided practical support to patients and their families, such as visiting, meals, baking, and firewood. Staff and volunteers are currently supporting 1102 people across the CanterburyWest Coast regions, with 1006 new referrals received this year. Welfare grants of $101,000 have helped provide assistance for people coping with cancer and 629 people attended facilitated group programmes. The leading cause of cancerrelated death is lung cancer followed by colorectal cancer. “By supporting Daffodil Day on August 30th in the Malvern community this year, you can ensure we’ll be there to help people living with a cancer diagnosis and their families when it is most needed,” said a s p o k es p er s o n f o r th e Canterbury West-Coast division of the Cancer Society. “If you, or someone you know, needs our help please encourage them to ring the Cancer Society of New Zealand, Canterbury-West Coast Division on 0800 CANCER (226237),” they finished.

What a show! The students at Windwhistle School really do have talent. On Thursday, August 8th, Room 2 students organised a school talent competition. The students created handcrafted decorations and posters for the event, and even judged the competition themselves. They made a marvellous job of scoring and providing feedback for each contestant. The support from parents who came along and enjoyed the performances was appreciated. The School congratulates the students who were brave enough to show off their talents. There is a video available on YouTube for those who want to see the School’s talent for themselves.

Last Monday saw a group of enthusiastic skiers from Darfield Primary School head to Porters for a day’s skiing. Above: Tatiana Little leads the group as they enjoy their lesson with one of the instructors on the skifield. The Year 5 and 6 students who choose to take part in the Darfield Primary School ski programme will travel to Porters every Monday for five weeks. Monday, August 19th was their second week on the mountain, and with forty three students taking part, it made for a great day’s skiing.

Fifteen year old Brie Gullery of West Melton performing her ball routine at the recent 2013 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Sydney. Fifteen year old Brie Gullery of West Melton, jumped the ditch recently to compete in the 2013 Australian Gymnastics competition in Sydney. Sh e g ain ed a co mm en dabl e fourteenth overall placing, from a huge and experienced field of entrants. Brie’s routines were clean, and she was happy and confident on the floor. At the trials in Auckland, which was selection for the team to compete in Australia, she came third out of the three girls who were chosen. She achieved just over twenty nine points for her final total score, as she did in the Wellington Open Champs in June. For the Australian Championships, she came first out of the New Zealand girls and got a total of just over thirty six points. A huge improvement and this was from an Australian judging panel. Brie received a score of 10.450 for her ball routine, coming close to making the finals. The points system for rhythmic gymnastics can be hard for those outside of the sport to understand, but this was a brilliant score, and she only missed reaching the ball finals by a miniscule 0.1. Taking into consideration that the other girls fifteen year old Brie was competing against were in their twenties, it’s understandable why her parents and coaches are all so proud of how she performed, and how confident and controlled she looked.

“Aside from all that, Brie had an absolute ball! The Olympic Park is really impressive with gorgeous streets and amazing huge stadiums here, there and everywhere! She contacted me on Saturday afternoon saying there was some rugby game on at the stadium across the road that night, which turned out to be the Wallabies vs. Lions test match,” said Brie’s mother Pam Gullery, Gullery with a smile. “She has made great friends, seen the Sydney Opera House and, of course, done some shopping,” said Pam. “Brie thoroughly enjo yed th e whole experience, and has now acquired a taste for international sports travel.” Brie and her family want to say a huge thanks to the Darfield High School co mmun ity fo r th ei r sup po rt, encouragement and gym usage, as well as all the teachers and staff for their interest in and care for, Brie. “She couldn’t have done this without you all and we really appreciate it,” concluded Pam. The pupils and teachers of the TM Dance Studio (Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio) can be justifiably proud of their recent examination results “This was my second year of putting s tud en ts th rou gh th e NZ AM D examination process,” said the Studio’s owner Tar a Marshall, Marshall “and our examiner, Mrs McGlinchy, McGlinchy was extremely impressed with the work from everyone. She loved the amount of energy and the high level of performance given by the students. We worked really hard at ‘performing’ while dancing, so I was delighted to have her comment on this.” Pupils from the TM Dance Studio sat their examinations with NZAMD (New Zealand Association of Modern Dance) on July 11th and 12th with the examiner coming to Darfield for this purpose. A pp ro xi m atel y si x ty s tud en ts participated in the examination process and sat exams in Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and contemporary dance, with some students sitting two exams in different styles. NZAMD was the first New Zealand based dance examination organisation, and is now one of the largest in the country with teaching members from Invercargill to the far North and examination syllabi in Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Contemporary and Ballet. NZAMD was born when Gladys Tonkins (FBBO) returned from overseas in the 1970’s and realised that New Zealand needed a more ‘modern’ style of dance. A popular jazz syllabus was quickly followed by a tap and ballet syllabus. Gladys’s legacy of making dance available to all is kept alive with NZAMD offering teachers syllabi for the once a week student as well as those committed to dance excellence.

“I’m very proud of every one of my pupils and hope they are all super proud of themselves too,” added Tara. “Last year I had a handful of students who passed with Honours and I spoke to them all about aiming for High Honours this year; eight of the ten students achieved this increased mark.” “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the dancers pushing for more and I thank them all for their hard work as well as all the support from parents.” Tara commented. “I would like to share our very top marks with you all.”

Club President Robbie Bell presenting the Bruce ‘Tubby’ Smith trophy to Sam Truscott. Plenty of hot water was necessary to clean-up after this muddy run to victory last weekend. Above:Kirwee players L to R: Tom Ruwhiu, Angus Pattie, Max Topham and Toby Stott Undefeated all season, the Kirwee Under 8½ team played a ferocious Rolleston (Blue) team in the final at the Darfield Rugby Club hosted, non-competitive finals, last Saturday. Declan Kenure drove over the first try for the Kirwee team and the Ro l l es to n team q u i ck l y answered with a try of their own. All tied up at half time, one try each, the Rolleston team came out in the second half with a vengeance and their stand-out half back, Roman, put two more tries up on the Kirwee Team.

In the last ten minutes of the game, with a ‘never give up’ attitude that has typified the Kirwee team’s season, Tom Ruwhiu scored two tries and Blake O’Donnell one, the last try scored in the dying seconds of the game and secured the ultimate victory the Kirwee Team was desperately searching for. Player selected team captain Max Topham, Topham was very proud of his team’s performance and acknowledged the Rolleston team on a great final. Final score, 20 - 15 to Kirwee.

BIG PEOPLE WORDS Several kindergarteners were trying very hard to become accustomed to the first grade. The biggest hurdle they faced was that the teacher Insisted on NO baby talk! You need to use 'Big People' words,' she was always reminding them. She asked John what he had done over the weekend? 'I went to visit my Nana'. No, you went to visit your GRANDMOTHER. Use 'Big People' words!' She then asked Mitchell what he had done. 'I took a ride on a choo-choo'. She said. 'No, you took a ride on a TRAIN. You must remember to use 'Big People' words'. She then asked little Alex what he had done? 'I read a book' he replied. That's WONDERFUL!' the teacher said. 'What book did you read?' Alex thought real hard about it, Then puffed out his chest with great pride, and said, 'Winnie the S#*t'
