Hard work has opened doors to a world most only dream of for Hororata’s Nicole HamiltonHamiltonCross - a life travelling the USA playing a sport. Steve Adams (NBA) and Scott Dixon (Nascar) have made it happen, but is this local Hororata girl about to take her first steps toward doing the same? Is Nicole’s dream about to become reality? Over a year ago Nicole Hamilton -Cross signed with college recruiting company USA Sports Connect, a specialist company who guide New Zealand High School students through the process of obtaining a US college scholarship to play sport, while studying for a degree. Since then, with the aid of USA Sport Connect, Nicole has been contacted by USA universities and their college golf coaches all keen to get her enrolled and playing on their college golf team. Nicole has just accepted a four year scholarship to study and play golf at Western Illinois University, a Division 1 college, ranked in the top fifty of colleges out of 1,000 plus universities in the USA. Nicole’s level of golf has helped in getting a scholarship, but it has been her academic results which have opened most doors. Good NCEA Level 1 and 2 results, plus a great US
Nicole’s next move on the road to success has been carefully considered. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score have Nicole at a level where the top colleges were looking to sign her. At one point Nicole had twelve colleges, including Harvard and Yale, emailing and skyping her because they knew academically she would be granted entry into their university. Nicole learnt quickly through these contacts, regardless of how good you are at sport all colleges firstly look at how well you have been doing at school (Nicole was a student at

Hororata Primary School, then Darfield High School). Nicole said, “an university is there to have people gain degrees and graduate. If they decide you wouldn’t be able to achieve this it makes it very hard to get a scholarship, based solely on your sport.� After considering all approaches,
it was Western Illinois University’s scholarship Nicole chose to accept, as she felt it was the best fit for her. This college allows Nicole to obtain a Forensic Science Degree, plus travel the US playing golf with a very strong, college, golf team.
