The Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust marked its twentieth birthday on June 20th at a gathering of staff, along with past and present trustees. Founder Leith Creamer, Creamer longest serving staff member Vicki Mulholland and longest serving District Nurse Mary Roberts were each presented with bouquets.

When the Darfield Medical Centre decided to discontinue the District Nursing Service in 1993 a number of locals led by Leith and the late J anice Collier organised a public meeting to address the Malvern nursing issue. 150 people attended with forty apologies. A health committee was formed to determine how future home care nursing services should be managed. The establishment committee included Selwyn District Mayor Bill Woods, Woods Rev. Ted Johnson, Johnson Helen Loe, Loe Maree Martin, Martin Ian Warren, Warren Jan Halliday and Glenda Stone.

Tripp The Trust obtained the contract for both District Nursing and Personal Care. Prue Thorne and Gwen Heffernan were the District Nurses. Vicki Mulholland was the co-ordinator. Mary Roberts replaced Gwen in

1996, and is still District Nursing.

Trust activities have included, health forums and seminars, subsidising community health initiatives, piloting an aged day care centre, a scholarship for tertiary health studies and providing a $220,000 loan to enable the new Darfield Medical Centre to be built.

In 2013 the Malvern Home Nursing Trust, which had been financing home nursing care at nights and over the weekends, became assimilated into the Malvern Health Trust providing

a very strong entity to deal with home nursing care.

Mary Roberts said that twenty years ago very few people died in their homes; now care has enabled people to stay in their homes until the end.

The TV 1 programme Topp Country features Jools and Lynda Topp, Topp the kiwi iconic duo, as they make their way around New Zealand, meeting locals and discussing food, food, food. If anyone tuned into last Sunday’s screening they would have seen Malvern’s very own Hororata Café featured and focussing on the Café’s much sought after pies.

The filming was done last year when The Hororata Café was making and selling the Hororata P ie, but the restrictive licence fee (these pies are now produced in a Christchurch factory) to continue with that venture meant the couple needed to dive rs ify and so the y

developed their own Butcher’s Pies! Following that decision they have never looked back and the Butcher’s Pie is not only their pride and joy, but it attracts customers from far and wide.

The pair spent a great, full day, filming with Jools and Lynda Topp, and Diva Productions.

The programme made quite a mention of Jarnia and Jason having been together since their teenage years along with some shots of them at the time of their marriage etc.

“It was a bit surreal to see our relationship on television but a

beautiful memory for us both,” commented Jarnia. “In the words of Jools Topp - ‘It's a miracle not a relationship!’,” Jarnia laughed. “We loved it all and when Jase was walking through a Christchu rch shopping mall during the week he was stopped a couple of times; ‘Hey you're that pie maker on TV last night. What a beautiful family you have!’.”

“Already we have had email enquiries for deliveries around New Zealand from people wanting a real pie made by a butcher!”

The Kirwee Rugby Club Black Tie Ball, held last weekend, proved to be a huge success. The event saw almost two hundred people, put on their glad rags and dance away the blues. The music for the evening was provided by the group ‘Puree’, deservedly known as one of Christchurch's top bands. The band was supplemented by ‘DJ Dwight’ which ensured continual music between live sets. The ball, held in the Kirwee Community Hall was a fundraiser for the Kirwee Rugby Club. The event raised approximately $5000 which will be used toward enhancing the outdoor area at the Kirwee Rugby Clubrooms.

Of course a successful evening cannot happen without lots of organisation and help. This came in the form of a team who took responsibility for the whole event, and Bindy Grant, Amy Truscott, Cheryl Williams, Amy Jones and Janine Topham are to

Following the Canterbury Earthquakes a group of volunteers formed for the purpose of meeting the needs and supporting the Darfield community. A Hub to provide food parcels, welcome packs and transportation was formed and the Citizens Advice Bureau acknowledge and thank those involved for all their good work, as well as their ongoing support in the community.

Over time the needs of the community have shifted from physical suppor t toward needing know l edg e and information about how to access services and what their rights are. In 2013 Citizens Advice Bureau in Christchurch took four

hundred and twenty four calls from Selwyn residents. As a co ns equ en ce, th e l o cal community and Selwyn District Council have asked for a Citizens Advice Bureau service to be set up in the area.

Citizen’s Advice will open in Darfield on July 1st at the Darfield Library and be open every Tuesday from 10am until 2pm to provide Selwyn people with better access to advice. As the need arises the hours will be extended.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) provides advice and support to help people know and understand their legal rights and responsibilities and to be able to use this

The household name Four Square emerged in the 1920s when the Foodstuffs grocery buying co-operative became concerned at the activities of the grocery chain stores of the day making life difficult for Auckland’s independent grocers.

The name Four Square emerged on the 4th of July 1924, when Foodstuff's founder, while talking on the telephone, drew a square around the four of the date on h is calen dar. H e immediately realised he had a suitable name for the buying group, stating that, "they would stand 'Four Square' to all the winds that blew".

By the end of 1924 products were appearing under the Four Square name, and by 1929, discussions were underway on the use of a common branding on stores.

Early versions of the Four

Square sign were produced in the form of red and gold hand painted glass panels for display in members' stores.

In 1925, and after a series of meetings, a co-operative buying group of independent grocers came together to form the buying group company, Foodstuffs Ltd. This eventually became the first of three regional co-operatives based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and which now form the Foodstuffs group.

During the 1950's the Fo o ds tuf fs ad ver ti s i n g department designed the famous Four Square man who initially appeared only in newspaper advertising and posters, but was developed to become part of the Four Square identity, appearing in every Four Square store and eventually b ecoming a nationally recognised icon in New Zealand.

Tim Emerson, Cathy Irons and David Mueller-Cajar Former Kirwee resident and Darfield High School student David MuellerMueller-Cajar is set to return to the local area, and perform in a concert at the Trinity Church with Romanticada.

The dynamic Christchurch trio plan to present an exciting romantic repertoire, showcasing the violin, French horn and piano.

David began learning the French horn at Darfield High School, before going on to Burnside High where he entered th e Sp ecialis t M us ic Programme.

In 2009 David graduated with a Bachelor of Music (First Class Honours) in composition and p er f o r m an ce, f ro m th e University of Canterbury. David furthered his studies at the Rostock Conservatoire of Theatre and Music in Germany, under world-famous Professor Michael Hoeltzel.

Hoeltzel In 2012 David had the fantastic opportunity of debuting at the Carnegie Hall in New York with the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra.

David is at present based in Christchurch and performs regularly with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and also gives solo performances around the Canterbury region. He has

Students from local primary schools along with years 7 and 8 Darfield high School students represented Malvern at the Canterbury Primary Schools’ cross country, held at Halswell Quarry Park, on Wednesday June 18th. Placed in the top ten were Tom Ruwhiu from Kirwee in the year five boys’ race, Tom finished in 9th place and Ethan Rose from Glentunnel School in the year six boys’ race, who finished in sixth place. Both boys will now represent Canterbury in an Inter-regional Cross Country Competition

The children of Darfield Playcentre have had a busy term, wi th a focus on ‘community’. The children have had many outings into their local area with the chance to meet new people and learn about what their community has to offer. One of these visits was to the Darfield Police Station where the children listened to the duty officer explain his role and show them around the cells and inside the Police car, as well as showing them the Police issue taser and gun.

Darfield has many activities on offer for toddlers, and one which was thoroughly enjoyed by the children of Darfield Playcentre was storytime at the Darfield Library. The children listened and participated in the farmyard theme, singing songs and listening to stories. More recently some of the Playcentre families practised what they’ve learnt about road safety as they walked down to the Darfield Art Gallery. It was an especially exciting trip for some children as there were works by two of the parents on display. Autumn

is always a fun time of year for toddlers and the parents at Playcentre have made the most of this season by offering interesting arts and crafts activities based around autumn.

Some of the older children have also been focussing on weather, looking at the colours of the rainbow, different types of

weather and creating wild weather pictures.

Darfield Playcentre is pleased to welcome a number of new families this term and they warmly welcome any future new families, please refer to their advertisement, alongside, for session times.

DARFIELD On Saturday and Sunday, June 21s t and 22nd, seven synchronised swimmers from the Small Strokes Synchro Club competed in the South Island Ch ampi onsh ips, h eld i n Dunedin.

The Small Strokes Dolphin team was placed second in their section and its members: Tia Betteridge, Betteridge Samantha Asher, Asher Lauren Small, Small Alessandra Ward and Hayley Small - were extremely pleased with their result.

The figure competition was a tough section with twenty one competitors vying for honours.

Small Strokes’ swimmers produced very creditabl e results with Lauren Small (third), Nina Weir (fifth) and Alessandra Ward (seventh).

Also swimming well were: Tia Betteridge, Betteridge Morgan Bianchet, Bianchet Samantha Asher and Hayley Small.

Small “For their first competition the experience was so valuable and everyone is looking forward to working hard for next year,” said Small Strokes Swim School owner, Joan Billings.

One of the key decisions taken at the Darfield Farmers Market AGM was to change the name of the market to reflect that it is open to all-comers and all types of goods, not just people from the rural community wishing to sell their produce.

Casual stall fees will continue to be $10. On payment of a $5 annual membership fee, weekly stall fees reduce to $5.

Another key change is that anyone wishing to hold a car boot sale may do so at any Market for the usual $5 fee, although only the car boot sales on the first Saturday of the month will be promoted.

For people who can’t attend the market in person or have limited goods to sell, there is a community stall where they can leave their priced goods. The only condition is that they must arrange to pick up their takings and unsold items at the end of the day. The Market will take no responsibility for uncollected money or goods.

The Market will continue to be held at Darfield on a weekly basis. Collaboration with other markets will be explored, in a bid to get more stalls and wider variety of goods.

Rather than go indoors on wet days, the market will investigate

the purchase of some large gazebos to erect in the nearby Dentist’s carpark.

Selwyn District Council staff took part in a civil defence exercise recently to test their ability to cope with a significant weather event.

Exercise Pandora was based on major rainfall affecting most of the district. In the exercise, around twenty Council staff and several community response teams practised activating the Council’s Emergency Operations

Centre (EOC) to respond to the impact of rural communities being cut off by slips, towns requiring evacuation, power outages, flooding and water supply problems.

Selwyn Civil Defence and E m er g en c y O p e r a t i o n s Controller Douglas Marshall said, “the exercise gave Council staff the opportunity to activate the EOC in Rolleston to practise

how response to a significant weather event could be coordinated. By practising how to respond to such an event, we can ensure the people involved have a chance to familiarise themselves with the EOC environment and think through the different aspects of emergency response so they are better prepared to cope with a real emergency,” commented Douglas.

The exercise is the latest in a series of emergency response exercises the Council has participated in. “Last year we took part in an exercise where we were required to respond to a large earthquake affecting the West Coast,” Douglas said.

“Selwyn covers a very large area and there are a number of emergencies that may need to be responded to, so it’s good for staff to be prepared for a variety of scenarios through training.” Douglas concluded.

The Malvern Game Hunters is set to get its twenty first annual Hunting Competition underway on the weekend of July 25-27th, 2014. Billed as the largest hunting competition in the South Island, organisers are once again expecting a large number of entries.

The competition will begin on Friday, July 25th and will run through to 2pm on Sunday, July 27th. Weigh-in will be held at the Coalgate Tavern on Sunday, between 11am and 2pm, followed by the prizegiving.

As in previous years, a large number of quality Spot Prizes are on offer, including a Centre Fire Rifle from Hunting & Fishing NZ. These are over and above the monetary prizes available for the heaviest Boar, Chamois, Stag, Thar and Wallaby and the best Douglas scores for Chamois, Stag, Thar, Tusks and Average Boar Weight.

There are also prizes for the most rabbits, hares and possums shot by an individual.

One of the drawcard events at the final weigh-in will undoubtedly be the Open Pig Carrying competition for men and women (2pm start), plus the wallaby carrying competition for children. A perennial favourite and always a good photo opportunity, the competitions are expected to be fiercely contested and create much spectator interest from the expected large crowd in attendance.

Th e Cou r tenay Pap aru a Ploughing Association’s 147th annual qualifying match was held on the property of the late N.D. Thomas just outside Kirwee, on a balmy winter solstice day (last weekend).

There was an extremely strong field competing, with thirty one ploughmen taking part, over four classes. Two of whom will now go on to compete at the National finals to be held next year, at Palmerston South.

From there two Silver Plough competitors will qualify to r ep r es en t N ew Z eal an d in the World Ploughing Championships.

In 2017 Courtenay will host the National final which will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Courtenay Paparua Ploughing Association in fine style.

To the Editors: In reference to the Police Report in the Malvern News, Friday, June 13th, 2014. We wish to bring attention to a number of incidents relating to the illegal and irresponsible hunting, killing and maiming of our Limousin cattle, in and around the airstrip in the Dalethorpe Forest, above Russell's Flat. ‘Flagpole’ has an agreement with Rayonier/Matariki Forests to graze cattle within this forest.

Since October 2013 we have found seven stud cows and one calf that have been shot, killed and left to rot, with no sign of any meat being taken. Recently a very distressed cow was treated, by the local vet for an horrendous hip gunshot wound, with mangled and broken bones having to be removed.

The area is being put under close surveillance with cameras being strategically located. Any hunters going into the area without having gained permission from Rayonier, will be checked.

The Darfield Police are interested in talking to anyone who has any information regarding the cruel and senseless shooting of these cattle, which is encroaching on our livelihood.

Let us reiterate the police warnings that if anyone is caught a maximum fine of $100,000 or two years jail will be imposed. This is outright poaching and slaughtering of domestic stock for the sheer hell of it!

Already the 2014 season is almost half way through. This season the Darfield Netball Club is pleased to have eight senior teams, five primary aged teams, and an enthusiastic bunch of new Junior netballers (in school years one to four). The Club congratulate those players that have gained selection to the various Malvern representative teams across the age groups.

With this number of teams comes the need for coaches and managers. The Club greatly appreciates the support of all of the returning and new coaches/ managers, who give up their time. We are also very lucky to continue to receive generous support from sponsors - thank you.

In addition to the normal seasonal matters, the Club is also preparing to host a function for past/present Club members and supporters to celebrate our 50th anniversary on Saturday, July 26th.

In 1964 a group of local women made the decision to form a ‘basketball team’ under the Darfield banner. Out came the dark blue gym frocks, red cotton shirts, red cord for the belt, white socks and the black basketball boots. So began the

existence of the Darfield Netball Club.

Michael Paterson, formerly of Hororata, returned to play ru gby in C h rist ch u rc h recently. However Michael pulled on a white English je rs ey rathe r th an a Crusaders or an All Black one, as people might have imagined .

Michael who grew up in the area and attended Hororata Prima ry Sch ool, bega n playing rugby in the fourth form at Christ’s College.

Since those first days on the rugby pitch, he has played for the New Zealand U21 team, and both the Crusaders and the H urrica nes bef ore deciding to try his rugby skills in the northern hemisphere.

Michael, headed for Wales where he played for Cardiff Blues, before heading to the premiership club Sale Sharks last season.

Local rugby referee Marty Gameson has recently achieved the milestone of refereeing 100 Div I Rugby Games, and has also been selected as one of the top four referees for the Luisetti Seeds Div I competition.

Marty comments - with a smile: “In my role as immediate past Convenor of the Ellesmere Rugby Referees (for three years) and current Chairman of the Canterbury Rugby Referees Association. I have been working hard in the past few years to grow the referee base in this area…. I am proud to say we currently have four young referees at DHS and I’m not stopping there!

“I do often think that the success and failure of the players and Clubs often overshadows the achievements of those people who make the contest possible. When was the last time you saw a referees appointment to a final (the highlight of their season) written up in the media. Sadly, that is the nature of the game and tabloids. To be fair, referees don’t attract attention unless they make a controversial decision or mistakes.

“After a good twenty years of playing rugby, I picked up the whistle fifteen years ago (I know that makes me really old) refereeing is my sport! I train as hard as a rugby player (often harder) and when I get too close to the play, I bruise just like they do. I was once told that you have to be as fit as that super sub (Jonah Jonah Lomu) Lomu put onto the field in the 79th minute - you can’t sub the ref off the field when the going gets tough; or the opposition gain

It still amazes me that we are often blamed for a simple knock-on or hand in the ruck, but no mention is made of the three tackles the winger missed along the sideline that led to a try, or the two missed penalties right out in front of the posts.

“A funny story - a few weeks ago I had a team two weeks in a row. In the first game I was pretty hard on them with penalties, but to be fair I also gifted them a few sitters in front of the posts, which they missed. On realising that they had me again the next week, the captain came up to me

before the game and said jokingly, “Ref are you going to go a little easier this week with the penalties?”

I replied by saying, “probably not, but I’ll kick your penalties for you this week, if that makes it any easier for you to win!”

“If I was cynical I would say that our biggest critics live on the sidelines - they just can’t help themselves! When the players are young, it’s their mums; as teenagers it’s their girlfriends, and as adults, it’s their coaches. I guess the difference between me and them is that I watch the game from a couple of metres away, not a couple of hundred metres, I have read the rule book, sat the exams and view the whole game, not just what’s happening around the ball.”
