Christmas Trail of Decorated Local Homes

Tammy McEvoy will be known to many from her time as hairdresser extraordinaire in a local Darfield salon. Living at Sheffield, Tammy is now an established Christchurch businesswoman, and her city salon, Headrush, employs a number of stylists with local connections. It’s this local connection, along with her skill and talent, that has recently seen Tammy accepted as the preferred provider of hairdressing in the planned new shopping precinct at West Melton. Aided by staff member, local hairstylist, Taryn Nicholls, Nicholls the salon will open in 2014.

Recently though Tammy’s hairdressing skills and talents have been in demand for different reasons. Tammy is part of the ‘Fudge Creative’ team who attended to the styling requirements of the hairdressing ‘Industry’ awards evening (one of only twelve invited stylists to do so). Then last week, again as part of the Fudge Team, Tammy was one of only ten invited stylists, backstage at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. Held in Auckland, the team styled the tresses of celebrities and presenters at the main Music Awards event.

Tammy commented that she’d thoroughly enjoyed the Music Award opportunity, learnt heaps and would be keen to go again.

Canterbury Road Safety Coordinators have joined resources to run a road safety campaign aimed at reducing rural drink driving.

Hurunui, Waimakariri, Selwyn, Ashburton, Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate District Councils are participating in this campaign, which encourages motorists to plan a safe ride home, if they drink this summer.

“Many people believe drivers who have been drinking have a lower chance of being stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads. In some cases people think they can get away with drink driving in rural areas,” said Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning.

“Drink driving is never acceptable. It puts everyone at risk and Police will be actively policing rural roads,” she said. Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on rural roads over summer. The booze bus will be deployed in rural areas, as well as urban areas.

In Selwyn District between July 2008 and June 2013, there were 151 crashes where alcohol was involved. These crashes resulted in twelve fatalities, thirty six serious injuries and sixty one minor injuries.

“In many cases when drivers are affected by alcohol, they tend to drive faster and fail to wear seat belts,” added Ngaire. “This mix often results in a tragedy.”

This advertising campaign encourages drivers to think about having a sober driver, using the courtesy van, sharing the designated driver duties or sleeping over so that people avoid driving when drunk.

As part of the campaign, posters, coasters, stickers, bar mats and pens are given out to hotels and taverns in Selwyn during December.

“Our local hotels and taverns already do a great job with host responsibility, with almost all having courtesy vans,” Ngaire commented. “Each year as part of our road safety campaign, we distribute free resources to licenced premises to encourage and support their host responsibility activities.”

“The design is quite humourous and we have found that this approach works well, plus has been very popular with licenced venues, along with their patrons, in the past. People remembered the message and wanted to keep the coasters and stickers,” Ngaire concluded.

Eight year old Travis Abraham is a pupil of Sheffield Primary School and as part of a school project young Travis worked hard and collected pine cones.

These he sold and chose to donate the $44 he raised from his labours to the local Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade. “The

Darfield Playcentre has enjoyed a very busy term. Children so far have enjoyed being invited to the Darfield Primary School Agricultural Day, where Playcentre children saw a vast range of pets, and the clever creations proudly displayed in the school hall.

Playcentre children have helped create a new strawberry patch and they are enjoying watering the garden and watching the strawberries grow.

Older children at the Playcentre experienced a school visit to Darfield Primary's new entrants’ room. There they enjoyed an exciting range of activities all related to the letter P, including colouring, gluing, painting, planting a bean seed and playing on the junior playground.

Last week the Playcentre went on an excursion to the Springfield Fire Station where the children got to ride in the fire truck, squirt the hose, learn about a fire fighters’ job and what to do in the case of a fire emergency. This successful visit was followed by a group picnic at the Sheffield Domain where children re-enacted being fire fighters and had a go at a game of t-ball and Frisbee.

The Playcentre are now looking forward to beginning their Christmas activities in the lead up to the Playcentre Christmas party.

The Canterbury Schools Indoor Netball Competition started at the beginning of term four and a team of eight, year nine Darfield High School girls, decided this was a competition they would like to enter. The six week tournament saw the girls either play at Hornby Action centre or Riccarton Howzat Centre. The team had an amazing competition without

any losses and with the fantastic result of scoring 149 goals and having only 49 goals against them.

The winning results were: • 25-10 Avonside Girls High School • 25-6 Christchurch Girls HS • 22-11 Marian Girls College • 22-3 Villa Maria College • 22-9 Lincoln HS and 33-10 in the Final

The girls had a gr eat competition and worked really hard as a team to produce these r esults, whil e all thoroughl y enjo ying th e experience. However it would not have been possible without the assistance of Lindsay Soal who took the time to drive the girls in and out of town each week .

Kay Stott and Bossanova Phoenix (Albert) Champions of the Level 8 Dressage.

Local woman Kay Stott and Bossanova Phoenix (Albert) competed, last weekend, in the Canterbury Dressage Championships held at the National Equestrian Centre, McLean’s Island. The pair rode one test per day and points were accumulated over the three days of competition. When the final scores and positions were announced Kay was thrilled to find she had won the Level 8 Championship.

Bossanova Phoenix (Albert) was bred at Goldengrove Stud in Greendale by a stallion called Ballycotton. Kay bought him in

2001 as a broken-in three year old for dressage, from a family who initially proposed to use him as an three day eventer.

Over the last twelve years, Kay and Albert have trained through all the grades to be competing this year, for their first season, in Level 8. This is only one level below the highest level in Dressage - Level 9 which is the same as Olympic Dressage. Kay, who has used Sally FieldFieldDodgson as her trainer for many years, hopes that over the next eighteen months she can step up to Level 9 to compete.

This is the culmination of six months planning and hard work by a sub-committee of the Hororata Parent Teacher Association. During this time the same group have also assisted with the St John’s Church Fair and provided Bacon Butties at the Hororata Highland Games.

The committee have a great array of sponsors for the evening and a wonderful selection of auction lots, everything from babysitting and Christmas cakes to compost and local business vouchers.

Tickets are available at the door tonight for $5, which includes a bingo card and the promise of an entertaining night.

The Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championship Day was held at Canterbury Agricultural Park on Thursday November 21st.

To qualify for the Championships, entrants had to have attended a school pet day within their region.

Students were judged across three sections: Care and Attention, Leading and Handling

and their Project Books which were submitted prior to the Canterbury A & P Show.

Numbers were up on last year with 87 entries received, comprising beef calves, dairy calves, lambs, poultry and goats.

Johnathan Hart of Hororata Primary School won the first prize in the Dairy Calf ‘Type’ section in the Senior, years

5 -8. Also in the Dairy Calves – Senior (years 5-8) another local student from Darfield High School finished extremely well.

Samuel King of Darfield High School was placed first in Care and Attention, first in leading and handling, and was also named Champion of the Dairy Calf years 5-8 section.

Work has now begun to construct a reservoir and pump station north of Darfield.

Construction of the reservoir is expected to be completed in the first half of 2014. The reservoir will allow entrained (trapped) air to be released from the water supply before it reaches people’s homes. This is expected to help address the problem some households experience with air locks occurring in their plumbing.

The population of Darfield is expected to grow rapidly in the future and there will be more demand on the water supply network. The new pump station and reservoir will also help to better manage current and future peak demand.

This year, a second bore was successfully drilled and will be commissioned to supply the town by the end of the year. The second bore provides Darfield with an alternative

As the water from both bore sources which supply the town water supply are now sourced from deep underground the likelihood of these water supplies being contaminated in

The Council had previously anticipated that the Darfield town supply would need to revert back to the Waimakariri water supply for around a week when electrical equipment was installed for the second bore, however the installation of the equipment can now be done while using the main bore as the water source.

The Township Committee is a sub-committee of the Selwyn District Council and receives funding for tree planting and other small projects as well as having an overview of the Darfield Water Supply, roading, footpaths, playgrounds etc. within Darfield.

the Darfield Water Supply will be complete in April with the commissioning of a new reservoir. This will give extra storage and capacity over summer and should solve the issue of air in the water.

More projects are planned for Westvi ew Park with the installation of a feature commemorating the railways t h a t p a ss e d t h ro ug h Darfield and a new toilet block between the skate-park and the Four Square. Planning for the toilet block is well underway and current Township Committee members promise it will be nothing like the old one!

The land sold to Progressive Enterprises for a new Four Square to be built at some time

in the future has given Darfield Township a large pool of funds to be used for projects that will improve the quality of life for D ar fi eld r esi d en ts . Th e Committee would love to have some ideas from residents as to what projects this fund could be used for and are developing some terms of reference to help rank projects.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams is encouraging local teachers to apply for the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards this year.

“Our teachers play a huge role in our children’s educational success, and we need to recognise and encourage their contribution,” Amy said.

The Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards aim to do just that. They celebrate the p eo p l e in co m mu n i ti es delivering the best teaching to

children, those who raise the bar that bit higher.

The awards cover earl y childhood education, all the way through to secondary schooling, and collaboration with tertiary providers and employers to create pathways for young people.

The four main categories are ex cel lence in go verning, excellence in leading, excellence in teaching and learning, and excellence in engaging. The category winners will receive

$20,000, and the supreme winner will receive an additional $30,000.

“I encourage people or groups to apply now. We have a lot of talented people in the Selwyn electorate and I have witnessed this first-hand during visits to many of our local schools,” Amy stressed.

Fonterra Director of Global Sustainability and Social Responsibility, Carly Robinson, Robinson said: “When we developed the Fonterra Milk for Schools concept, an important element was making sure that we could have in place an effective recycling programme.”

“All schools that sign up to the programme are provided with a recycling bin, bin liners, and a free collection service from Fonterra to ensure all milk packs are recycled.”

“It’s not just about providing the recycling service - it’s also about educating Kiwi children on the importance of recycling.

To do this, we have created recycling guideline packs, a recycling video, and have had representatives visit each school to ensure they understand the programme.”

by Fonterra is brought back to

one of its sites to be baled and then sent to international recycling facilities to complete the recycling process. There the milk packs are made into roof tiles, books and paper.

“There are currently no facilities in New Zealand that have the ability to recycle this type of packaging, making the facilities in Malaysia and Thailand the closest and most eco-efficient process to recycle the packaging,” Carly said.

Almost 7,000 recycling bins have been made so far by New Zealand manufacturer SuloTalbot for Fonterra Milk for Schools, which is providing discounted bins made of up to 60 per cent recycled milk bottles for the programme, which is now in more than 1,000 schools nationwide.

Fonterra Milk for Schools is the tenth product stewardship scheme to be accredited in New Zealand under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008.

Kirwee Plunket has had a busy year with regular coffee mornings and recently had visits from a Plunket car seat expert and the local Karitane nurse. There were movie and dessert nights held for the mums, plus a dinner at Monkey Spices.

Sheffield/Springfield Toy Library and Plunket will get together in the Sheffield Community Hall, Wrights Road, for a Christmas celebration on Wednesday, December 4th. It goes without saying that everyone is welcome and it’s a chance to chat, play and enjoy the start of the festive season.

The Toy Library will begin the day by being open from 9.30-10.30am, and is a wonderful chance to take out toys for the holidays. The bouncy castle set up at the Christmas party is also available for hire - so this is a good chance to check it out, for future possible bookings.

At 11am there’s a special Christmas music session to look forward to, followed by a visit from the all important man in red, Santa Claus, followed by a shared lunch to enjoy.

The Talking Centipede A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet.

So he went to the pet store and after some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, which came in a little white box to use for his house.

He took the box back home and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to the pub for a drink with him. So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you like to go down the pub with me today? We will have a good time."

But there was no answer from his new pet. He waited a few minutes and then asked again, "How about going down the pub with me ?"

But again, there was no answer from his new pet. The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede's box and shouted, "Hey, in there! Would you like to go to the pub with me?

This time, a little voice came out of the box, "I heard you the first time! I'm putting my bloody shoes on!"
