As expected, Cassie Henderson was a huge hit at the Hororata Village Bar and Café’s birthday celebration last weekend. It was a real treat for local children to be inspired by wonderful talent such as Cassie, (who was fifth in the recent X Factor NZ competition), as well as local Whi tecli ffs s ing er, A s h y Batchelor.

Ashy has recently returned from the World Performing Arts Championships in Los Angeles, with a total of six bronze medals!

“Both of these performers are just fourteen years old, and what a privilege it was to have them perform for us here at the Hororata Village Bar and Café,” commented Jason, the owner operator of the successful Café.

In addition, good ol’ rockers, ‘Farenheit' from Kirwee brought the house down with their rendition of ’Ain’t No Sunshine’, and Stevie Wonder’s ’Very Superstitious’, among other hits. This band is new on the music ci r cui t, but w ell experienced when it comes to entertaining, and they were supported b y ‘B eautiful Christchurch’ singer Tor. Planning and organisation is pretty much under control for the Friends of Kirwee Model School’s Casino evening, to be held tomorrow night, Saturday, August 31st, in the Kirwee Community Hall.

At the time of going to print, a few tickets were still available and $25 gives those attending, their entry, sumptuous supper and casino ‘funny money’ (seeds). This ‘seed’ funny-money can be used to bid on a range of donated goods and to participate in the numerous entertaining games of chance - hopefully with the result of increased ‘seed’

wealth.

Organisers have arranged for eftpos facilities and a cash bar and are very appreciative of the support shown them by businesses and individuals who have enabled the event to get off the ground.

A huge variety of auction prizes have been assembled including, but not limited to: Helicopter Flights, meat, family passes to n u m er o u s a t t r a c ti o n s , champagne/wine, crop spray, fruit n’ vege, various vouchers, books, electrical

appliances including a brand new fridge freezer, meal vouchers, fishing rods and so, so, much more.

The fundraising for the upgrade of the Kirwee Model School playground will not only get an enormous boost by those attending, but a fun night will be had by all.

Almost three years since the September Earthquake, Hennie and Celia Bosman from True and Daring Winery are still impacted by repair work to their winery and shop.

“We had our very own fault line in the Wine Shop” said Celia. “It was quite a talking point, but the recent heavy rain made our fault line rather more of a crevasse, so we had to finally get it fixed!”

Sadly this meant that the shop had to close for a few weeks, but Hennie and Celia say they are back on track now and looking forward to developing the shop as spring approaches.

In addition to the wine shop, they have been working on an online shop for everything from wine and walnuts to artwork and gifts, from around the Selwyn District.

“It has been a lot of fun setting up the E-Commerce site; perhaps I can now add ‘Web Developer’ to my list of skills,” said Celia with a smile. “The online shop is called Celia’s, and the idea is for it to grow with a variety of local products including, of course, our True & Daring wine,” she added.

The upper elevations of virtually all ski areas are still offering snowy conditions.

“It’s definitely not time to hang the ski boots up just yet,” said Gnomes Alpine Sports directors, Leith and Ally Kerr.

Mt Hutt have just announced that to accommodate all the keen skiers and boarders heading their way, and because there’s still plenty of snow on the mountain, they ar e extending their expected season’s end by a week until October 13th.

Local field, Porters and its Club field neighbours, all have good cover on the upper slopes.

The vagaries of Canterbury weather are well known and true to form, is the southerly this week that has been predicted to

dump some more snow on the peaks.

While the Moon Man’s prediction may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and a few lost favour with him over the earthquake saga he has been pretty spot on so far, according to Ally of Gnomes, in his forecasts for the winter.

Café Hope began in 2010, when a group of Sheffield people got together to talk about the decision to cut back on Malvern Co-Operating Parish services in outlying areas. This meant that the community was left with no service at Sheffield on the second Sunday of each month.

This presented an opportunity for a less formal and more social type of service, and so began Café Hope.

The doors open at 10am once a month on the second Sunday, (the next being September 8th) at the hall, behind the St James Church on Wrights Road, in the Sheffield township. No strangers will be found at these gatherings - just friends about to be met, and these friendships are formed over plenty of tea, plus coffee, and food for all.

At present, each of the meetings follow a varying theme, with a different person guiding each one. For example the themes presented so far, have been water, fire, garden journeys and rocks. Sometimes people present are able to bring an example of the theme and share their ideas. This leads to input from those in attendance and it is amazing how many feel a b l e t o s h a r e t h ei r interpretation of that theme.

There is always a chance for people to recharge their coffee mugs, which is a great opportunity for people to mingle. Financial donations are also accepted, and these are administered by the local committee. Three times a year, a gift is made to charities such

SPCA Cupcake Day is a fun way for the public to show their support for the more than sixty thousand animals that pass through SPCA Centres in New Zealand every year.

On Monday this week, Rylee Shepherd and her dad Darryn could be found enjoying the sunshine outside Veten t Darfield, with their fabulous range of home-made cupcakes for sale.

Last year, the pair sold a total of fifty two cupcakes, so the goal this year was to increase that number to seventy in total.

“We’re hoping to raise more than we did last year,” commented Darryn.

“But any money going to the SPCA is better than nothing.”

Rylee’s mother, Jo Shepherd and aunty, Cynthia Sim did a great job helping to make the cupcakes for such a worthy cause.

On Monday, August 26th, th rough ou t th e co untr y cupcakes of all shapes, colours and sizes could be found on sale in streets, malls, schools,

businesses and community centres thanks to the thousands of SPCA supporters who signed up as SPCA Cupcake Cooks.

To the Editors: Darfield like any township needs the locals (a local is anyone who intends to stay for more than a year). Townships need locals to sup por t their bu sine sse s, schools, sports’ clubs, bridge, church, scout, art and cultural groups along with fire brigades, hall committees and other service groups etc. Over one hundred plus in the wider Malvern Area alone.

For any community to be thriving and healthy we need to be positive about the good and know how to support each other when things go badly wrong e.g. an earthquake.

I am sure your correspondent would not have wished the two Councillors to make submissions on local projects, then rule themselves out of deliberating on the submissions, and advocating to ensure Malvern's voice is heard.

A Councillors role is surely in Governance, while the day to day running of the District falls to the m anagem ent of Council d e p a r t m e n t s o f As s e t s , Corporate and Planning.

The Councillor must occasionally be capable of making decisions that may not be popular with all constituents, in order to benefit the rapidly growing district.

Is being a Councillor an easy role? The number of candidates standing across Selwyn would indicate it is a role few are interested in.

To the Editors, For most of us, if we fix something and it breaks again we change how we fix it.

So why then does the Council put more shingle in the scoured out ford on Scott’s Road when they get around to it after every decent rain? Surely a concrete lip on the downstream side would stop this scouring out every time water flows.

Since the last rain there is a hole 20cm deep and 70cm wide and half the width of the road.

If some unfortunate driver hits this the odds of damage and injury are high.

Kerry Uren and ex local Emily Bell (nee Burnett) Burnett of Rolleston love to run, and as a result have discovered that there is a lack of running events close to the Christchurch area. So they have taken it upon themselves to organise the Bayley’s Rail Trail Rampage, to be held on Saturday, October 19th.

“Personally, we both get frustrated finding events we want to enter, that mean we have to spend a whole day away from home. We both have young families, and this restricts what we can enter,” commented Kerry.

Realising that they weren’t alone in this feeling, the pair decided to do something about it. Offering people a scenic and achievable event, that involves local communities and gets Canterbury families out and about in a beautiful area, while being close to home, is paramount to the pair. Both Emily and Kerry felt that Banks Peninsula had been almost completely overlooked by sporting event organisers in the past.

“It’s such a shame that such a beautiful ar ea close to Christchurch is missed. It just doesn’t make any sense to us,” said Kerry.

Starting at Motukarara, a twenty three kilometre run has been planned, for those that are keen and able. Taking into account that not everyone will be interested in running that distance, a ten kilometre walk/ run has also been planned, starting from Birdlings Flat.

Both of these events will finish at the Little River Domain, where an eight hundred metre children’s dash has also been organised. This in vol ves pursuing a clown around a set course, before the prize-giving.

“It has been fantastic to see the Little River community so enthusiastic about the event. We have created a family friendly atmosphere at their Domain, and the local school have agreed to cater the event,” commented Kerry.

Also available on the day will be pony rides, face painting and a bouncy fort. There will be a number of businesses holding stalls and in return, most are providing spot prizes. Kerry and Emily only began running after having their children, with neither of them being runners before that. They have transformed themselves, and their lives through it.

Before children however, Kerry was a primary school teacher, while Emily was and still is, a nurse at Christchurch Hospital.

“We've been hooked on running ever since, and formed our friendship through it. We hope our new company, ScenicSports, based in Rolleston, will inspire others to enter events for the first time and also give current runners something else to add to their running calendar.” concluded Kerry.

While their move, like all moves, took amazing logistical powers, a lot of planning and a few headaches, 73 Hire became Darfield based (from their previous Springfield home) in May this year. To say they have been well received is an understatement and since their initial start up (which was in January 2012), the business has gone from strength to strength.

“There has been a marked increase in hires over the past two months,” said Catherine Field and Les Barnett of 73 Hire, “and as the warmer weather app ro ach es w e envisage this to pick up even further from now on.”

But it’s not just the fine weather that has seen customer numbers increase, it’s the location, information and advice, friendly, helpful service, and above all - the range and quality of gear available for hire that has seen 73 Hire grow in popularity.

“We enjoy being in Darfield and are expecting a busy spring,” the couple commented. “Since relocating we have purchased more equipment in readiness for the anticipated warmer weather which we envisage will provide inspiration for many to complete those long awaited outdoor jobs. We have also

listened carefully to client feedback and attempted to fulfil their requirements too.”

All these considerations have seen 73 Hire add to their already extensive fleet of equipment; a box blade to attach to their 40hp tractor; 1.5 and 4 tonne twin drum vibrating rollers, a second carpet cleaner; window vac to easily and efficiently clean windows and a smaller 7x4 single axle trailer. They have also partnered with Aggreko, which gives them access to a wide range of generators (from 2kva to 50kva+) and Hire Access which gives them access to a wider range of scissor lifts and knucklebooms.

Definitely mark Saturday, September 7th on the calendar as it’s the official 73 Hire opening day. The day will start at 10am and conclude at 3pm in the Horndon Street (opposite Canterbury Clay Bricks) yard.

“We have some visiting suppliers speaking about or demonstrating their company’s equipment, which will include the Snorkel (cherry picker); Lochiel Trailers, Total Oils and Karcher,” added Catherine and Les, “and at approximately 2pm we are having a reverse power tool auction. All new tools straight from their boxes - sale is as is where is.”

All those attending can enter the draw to win a 6x4 Lochiel trailer or a chain saw, but they have to be there when it’s drawn to be able to take away the prize (a redraw will take place otherwise).

Selwyn MP Amy Adams, Adams who is al s o M i n is ter f o r th e Environment, has followed her own advice and recycled her old, unwanted television to mark the Government’s TV Takeback Scheme which has now reached the milestone of 100,000 televisions recycled.

Amy recently took her own television for recycling at the RCN e-waste recycling plant at Buchanan’s Road in Hornby and handed over her five dollar note to RCN’s General Manager, John Thornhill.

Amy commented that she was thrilled with the progress of the scheme to date, including in Selwyn, where the target of 2,700 televisions recycled had been reached.

“It is great news for the environment that people are really getting behind the scheme,” she said. “Old television sets and other electronic waste such as computer monitors cannot be put into landfills because they contain chemicals that can contaminate the environment and cause harm to humans,” Amy added.

The Government’s TV TakeBack programme has been rolled out around the country to coincide

with the digital switchover in each region. Through the Government subsidy, the cost to the public of recycling a television has been no more than $5.

The initiative will get underway in the lower North Island and the East Cape later this month, and the rest of the North Island, including Auckland, from October.

The programme is also aimed at expanding electronic recycling services across New Zealand, raising public awareness and ensuring recyclers have the capacity and capability to deal with increased volumes of ewaste in the future.

BODKIN SHIELD

Day 1 - Moa Creek.

The Club’s travelling shooters met up on the first day at Moa Creek. Light breezes and dull skies combined to make conditions difficult for those relegated to the back marks and meant Dave Pithkethley was the best performed of the club reps, just missing his last target for the day. Murray Robertson struggled early and late but managed a possible in the middle to make his day. Just the three possibles for the ten entries, but there wer e consistent results for Duncan Jefferis, with three scores of 19/20.

Day 2 - Wanaka.

An early start and nearly all the Bodkin team stepped up and produced possibles in the first match of the day. The second

shoot confirmed the team selection, as the score remained at, or close to possibles for most.

Then the Bodkin Match. Forget the handicaps, and all shoot off fifteen metres. Duncan Jefferis was able to continue his string of possibles in the Bodkin with a possible which relied heavily on his second barrel. Paul Templeton and Tony Stuart both dropped a target leaving Darfield five down with two to shoot. Bevan Brown and Steve Gawn finished the teams effort in fine style, both scoring possibles to keep the team on five down to score 85/90. A team from Amberley took the event and the shield, with a score of 88. Back on to handicap marks for the last of the day with only Steve scoring a possible 20/20.

When a house was demolished in Waihi Beach (1987) at the top of the North Island, it wouldn’t really be expected to have anything to do with the history of Darfield. However in this instance that wasn’t the case. The homeowner came across old photos and a framed presentation in the ceiling, that brought alive the families and business owners in the Malvern area at the time - just over one hundred years ago (1912).

The framed presentation was given to Mr Wallace Scott Rae, Rae the Pound Keeper of Darfield upon his departure from the district, and eventually made its way North with him, prior to his death.

Wallace Scott Rae, Pound Keeper Darfield was born in 1846 and died in 1926.

The following information has been provided by the Darfield Genealogy and Local History group: Wallace Scott Rae was the son of Charles Joseph Rae (1819 – 1894) a painter, and his wife Mary Ann Long, Long and was born 1846 in London. Wallace’s mother Mary Ann died in 1846; possibly in child birth.

Charles Joseph Rae remarried in 1851 to Ann Elizabeth Beldam, daughter of a musical instrument maker and had further children.

Charles Joseph had taken an active part in the Chartist movement and soon after this marriage the couple, disillusioned by the obstacles to reform in England, decided to emigrate to Christchurch, New Zealand, “to assist in the founding of a young nation”.

When Wallace Scott was six years old Charles and Ann Elizabeth Rae arrived at Lyttelton with Charles having worked his passage by taking on the position of the ship’s carpenter for the voyage.

The family settled first in Papanui and Charles became involved in the promotion of workers’ interests. He was responsible for the establishment of a Mechanics’ Institute (an educational organisation for craftsmen and skilled workers established in Europe and America in the early nineteenth century) which opened in May 1859. Charles Rae was the secretary. The family then moved to Heathcote where Charles was employed with the Lyttelton road tunnel.

In 1864 Charles and his family moved to Wakamarina gold field in Marlborough. Being unsuccessful in his search for the elusive precious metal he took employment in a sawmill in the area and eventually settled for a time in the Blenhiem district before eventually returning to Christchurch in 1880.

In 1876 Wallace Scott Rae married Martha Jane Brown of Kowai Bush and by 1879 he is one of the first Kowai Bush Postmasters.

Martha and Wallace had four children. In the electoral rolls for 1885, 1890, 1896, 1900, 1911 Wallace Scott Rae is listed first as a bushman and then as Pound keeper at Darfield. This position he held from around 1888 until 1904/07 ie for at least nineteen years. The next pound keepers were Jas Adams and A. Otten.

In September 1912 Martha Jane, Wallace’s wife of thirty six years died and is buried in the Kimberley Cemetery. In December that year Wallace was presented with the pictured scroll by the residents of Darfield in recognition of his long service as pound keeper for the district. Obviously they held him in high esteem.

In 1914 Wallace was living in Simeon Street, Spreydon, Christchurch with his son Wallace Allen Rae. Father and son were both working as contractors.

Some time after 1920 Wallace Scott Rae moved north to join another son, Charles Alfred Rae and his family. He died in 1926 aged 81, and is buried with his son and daughter in law in the Waihi Cemetery. His son died 1940 and his daughter in law died 1966.

The handsome framed presentation has the wording: Mr W.S. Rae, Darfield.

Your long residence in the district (for over a quarter of a century) and the positions you occupied have brought you into almost daily contact with a large number of residents, and in the discharge of your duties, sometimes of a trying character, you have acted in a straightforward manner, without favour to anyone.

In all that pertained to the welfare of the neighbourhood you took a willing part, and we say good-bye with regret, tempered with the hope that you may enjoy many years of good health and happiness.

Senior Prizegiving Awards List 2013 The Malvern Netball season is drawing to a close, with the semifinals completed and now just the finals day to look forward to.

This year’s Senior A final will be between Kirwee Klassix and Springfield/Sheffield Seniors. Kirwee Klassix will be looking to go one better than last year’s second place. But they are up against a Springfield/Sheffield team who have been undefeated for the whole of the competition’s second round.

The Senior B and Senior C finals are both battles of women versus girls. South Malvern Social take on the (Year 10 and 11) Darfield Cometz, whilst the (Year 8 and 9) Sheffield Stormers will be playing the Darfield Fiascos.

Primary A will see the Darfield Dragons trying to keep their 100% winning record against the South Malvern Steelers, who were involved in last week’s closest semi-final, beating Kirwee Rubies by a single goal.

The Primary B champions this year are guaranteed to be wearing Darfield colours, as the Darfield Force play the Darfield Smashers.

Like the Dragons, the Force have reached the final with a 100% winning record but they will be expecting a tough game against a Smashers team full of very promising talent.

It is great to see all the Clubs represented in the finals this year.

The Malvern Netball prize giving will take place after the completion of the Senior A final.
