Tomorrow a thank you evening will be held at the Darfield Baptist Church, in recognition of the community work undertaken by Sam Broughton. Broughton Sam has just concluded ten years as Youth Pastor at the Church. “Sam has been an influence for good and built a strong youth community, in the Church, Darfield High School (through 24-7 YouthWork [24-7YW]) and in the wider community by being a voice and advocate for young people, said Darfield’s Baptist Church Pastor, Paul Cossey. Cossey The youth ministry has provided weekly social activities, Bible and faith-based discussion, camps and outings for Malvern youngsters. Leadership development is also a k ey com pon en t wi th approximately eighty to one hundred teenagers registering for the annual Easter Camp at Spencer Park. The interest in these events and programmes, highlights the importance of providing encouraging role models and activities which are needed in the community, along with a positive place to hangout. Sam initiated 24-7YW along with Darfield High School and
through the Malvern Youth Trust; there are now three youth workers working in the school, contributing forty hours. Easter Camp is always a highlight and they prepared to take a large number of young people to Spencer Park. However the storm at the start of Easter caused a cancellation. They were both disappointed, but are taking a long term view of their role and know, ‘there is always next year’. Poiema, who has been a

Sam Broughton, Poiema Heine and Danielle Duff. 24-7YW youth worker at DHS for the past three years, will continue in this role, while Danielle has just started as the third 24-7YW youth worker at the school. Because of their previous involvement with youth work and the success they have experienced, Poiema and Danielle do not see there being
many drastic changes in their new role. Sam will still be around to offer support and encouragement, although he admits he is still to settle on what he’ll do next. “This Saturday evening we will be formally thanking Sam for his leadership and contribution to the church and community youth work,” Paul concluded.
