St. J ohn Y outh Cadets focus on first aid, health care, leadership and general life skills. On Sunday, August 4th, over one hundred ex cited cadets from all over Canterbury descended upon Darfield Primary School to show off their skills, and compete in the Canterbury Distri cts’ S t J ohn Y outh Competition. Cadets were asked to be at the Primary school by 7: 30am , wi th the d ay concluding at 4:30pm. It was a very big day for all concerned, but it was also a very successful one. Darfield St J ohn Y outh, entered e i g h t ca d e ts i n th e competitions (one junior team of four, plus four individuals) and they all perf ormed ex tremely well. Along with the competitors were the three Darfield judges, Lynda W alter (Darfield Division Manager), Michelle Kittelty (Assistant Division Manager) and Patrick van der Pol, Pol as well as five ‘patients’, Charlotte Boyd, Ben Ellington, Charlotte Courtenay, Zoe van der Pol and Bernie Campbell. Campbell Also present was St. J ohn Malvern Chairperson, Arthur Marsh, a familiar face to many in the district, who presented the awards.

Taking a leaf out of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s book, they will organise a ‘Decorate a Tile’ fundraiser. Another successful Darfield High School Formal was held last Saturday, August 3rd, and was atte nded by 221 senior students. The night was a huge success, and very much enjoyed by everyone who went. Questions such as; W hen and where did they come from and how did they get here? W hy did they come? What ship did they arrive on? What work did they do here ? Did they farm the land or maybe work in the coal or clay mines? Did they build the Midland railway, or the many roads and bridges? Were they teachers, ministers, or doctors?

In February of this year, the (DGLHG) was contacted by ‘Elizabeth’ Elizabeth’ and her husband from England who were staying in Methven with their daughter. They were seeking information about the Rev. E. H. Soper (known as Ned), an early Baptist minister in Greendale. The enquiry was on behalf of their friend ‘JJ ane’, ane a great grand daughter of Ned, and living in England. The nex t day Elizabeth and her family joined the (DGLHG) for a cemetery walk at Greendale. They found Ned’s burial plot in the SW corner of the cemetery and then went in search of the old Baptist Manse and Church (now a private home). Rev E H Soper (Ned) came to Auckland, New Zealand with his wife and child in 1876 and spent time at the Baptist Tabernacle before coming to the Greendale Baptist Church, where he worked for two years. According to records, the Reverend appeared to have been very popular with the people of the district.

Thanks to a generous grant of $ 15,000 from the Canterbury Community Trust, fifteen outstanding, new, portable cross country jumps have been built and delivered to the Hororata Reserve by Andy Thompson and his team, Pete Arcus and J osh Fiso. Fiso Reserve Committee Chairman and cross country convenor, Dave Sligh sincerely thanks Andy Thompson Developers, Frews Transport, Stuart Sawmill and Ballagh Contracting for getting behind the project and doing an ex cellent job supplying their goods and services at a very generous rate. The new jumps, designed to take the existing course to the nex t level, will attract those involved in equestrian sport, both children and adults, from all over Canterbury. The obstacles will also add a new and challenging element for local schools to add to their cross country running course. “The Reserve Committee is in great heart and all members are united in their mission to continue to make the Reserve a recreational destination for as many users as possible,” Dave commented. He’s confident the committee will continue to look for projects to enhance what is already a valuable asset. To celebrate this new milestone for the cross country course there will be an Open Day on Sa tur day, Sep tember 8th (10am-3pm). $ 10 per horse and food and refreshments will be available.

From 4,522 pies at this year’s Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards, Karyn Cullingford of the Springfield Store and Café achieved a much deserved silver award in the Café Boutique section. Karyn achieved this success with the Cafe’s alpine pork with apple and sage pie. The awards were announced at a dinner held in the Langham Hotel, Auckland on Tuesday, July 23rd. The supreme winner was, rather surprisingly, a good old mince and cheese pie produced by an Auckland baker. The staggering number of entries this year was a new record in the seventeen years of the competition’s history, and with 505 pie makers all vying for top spot, it made those awarded with success, all the more proud of it. The competition adheres to a strict judging criteria (weight, pastry colour, etc.), and around 75% of the pie entries don’t even make it as far as the final hurdle - the taste test. Karyn and Don moved to the area seven years ago, but it wasn’t until April of 2010 that they purchased the Springfield Store and Café. Karyn is a self professed home-cook, with a passion for pies, and has been making them regularly since the purchase of the Store. Roughly two hundred pies delight Store customers each day, with Karyn’s record being 220. Pies are baked in a total of fifteen different flavours and all made using local produce. This was the couple’s second foray into the Bakels Pie competition. Their first, in 2012, returned a commendable fifth place for the Café’s lamb, kumara and rosemary pie. Recommendations come from far and wide for the Café’s fare,

Don also heads to Ox ford Farmer’s Market every Sunday, laden with pies to sell seldom if ever, returning with any. W hile winters in the Café are busy, it’s the summer that really keeps the couple on their toes. Numerous customers patronise the business to stock up on the pies that have made the café’s reputation, and now this award just proves what they already knew!
“The pies are much enjoyed by both locals, and travellers alike,” commented Karyn. While Don, who has been dubbed ‘Mr. Quality Control’, believes that consistency is the key to achieving great results. A final comment from one of the twelve judges and Bakels Ex ecutive Chairman, Duncan Loney, Loney sums it all up: “New Zealanders just love their pies, it goes hand in hand with the great Kiwi road trip; it’s neat and tidy, and easy to eat on the go.”

W hen Mark Stewart and Ainsley Walter bought the Hororata Pie recipe from the chattels auction at the Hororata Hotel, they wanted to secure the brand for the benefi t of the local community. “It was important to us to keep the Hororata Pie in local hands, and for the benefit of the local community,” said Ainsley. Last year the pair established the Hororata Pie Company Limited and start making pies in their Hororata Pie Cart. “W e had some fun, actually. The pie cart started as a neat branding opportunity and turned into a mobile pie factory baking pies on site , a t events, ” Ainsley commented. “We launched the pie cart at the Hororata Highland Games and couldn't keep up with demand. Every batch we made, sold out in seconds - it was fantastic.” To keep the pie local the Company has been selling on licence though the Hororata Cafe and W ine Bar as well as from the Hororata Pie Cart, at events around Canterbury. It's been a period of testing for the fledgling enterprise. “W e needed to understand the demand and the recipes, before committing further to the business,” Ainsley added. On Thursday, August 1st, Storm Uru, Uru Olympic bronze medalist in the 2012 London Olympic lightweight double sculls, visited Sheffield School. Here is what two students had to say about their special guests.

“Storm Uru is a hard working role model. He has a great mindset and is very kind. He taught us about perseverance and chasing your dreams. It doesn't matter what culture or background you come from or how big or small you are, you can do anything you set your mind to, and make your dreams come true. Storm Uru is a rower. He started rowing when he was thirteen. He was small and skinny compared to other rowers when he started, but he slowly improved and got better and better. When he trained for the Olympics he trained six days a week. Storm went to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and won a bronze medal with Tom Taylor in the London Olympics Lightweight Double Sculls event. One of Storm's passions is scuba diving and he occasionally goes diving with his family. Storm is an inspiration to all of us at Sheffield School.”

On Monday, August 5th the Combined Probus Club of Malvern celebrated their tenth b ir thd ay. This in cre dib ly successful Club saw 165 members, plus invited guests, attend the celebration meeting which was led by its current President, Sylvia Townshend. The Club’s historian, Bob McMeeking then presented an historical overview of the last ten years. “The genesis of the Probus Club of Malvern (Combined) traces back to the germ of an idea in the mind of the ‘mother’ of our club, Jennifer Syme, reported Bob. Following local advertisements placed by Jennifer, and the considerable interest they attracted, a meeting was held to get the prospective Probus ball rolling, The assistance of the Hornby Rotary Club was engaged at this stage, as a new Probus Club can only be formed under the i mme di a te s up p or t a n d sponsorship of a local Rotary Club through its formative stages and until accreditation is achieved. Following a further meeting a steering committee of eight was formed to identify all the issues involved in setting up a new Club. The President of the Hornby Rotary Club, chaired the very first, foundation meeting at which 115 prospective members were in attendance. The first Probus Club of Malvern office bearers were: President: J ennifer Syme, Secretary: Pam Duncan, Duncan Treasurer: Nola Colee and a Committee of: Bill Hewitt; Hewitt Colin Stott; Stott Margaret Irvine; Irvine Bob McMeeking; McMeeking J ohn Gunn; Gunn Fay Fechney and Doug J oy. oy Following the Club’s September m e e ti n g , f o u n d a ti o n membership was closed and the roll then stood at a healthy 182 members. The Committee voted to cap the membership at this figure, primarily due to the size of the allocated meeting room at the Darfield Recreation Centre. It remained capped for the nex t eight years, until the Club moved its meetings into the main hall of the Recreation Centre. During the past ten years the Club has been ably served by a succession of Presidents with the common goal of ensuring that members are surrounded with opportunities for Fun,

The honour roll of Presidents is as follows : 2003/4 J ennifer Syme, David Gray, Doug J oy,, Nola Colee,, J ohn Peyton, Roger Knowles, Helen Loe, Bob McMeeking, Kathy Kars and currently Sylvia Townshend. Probus Club trips are firm favourites and take place almost every month. The birthday lunch meeting held at the Recreation Centre after each August meeting is a Club highlight, as is the Christmas luncheon. The formation of interest groups has been greeted with enthusiasm and these have so far covered travel, computer skills, floral arrangement and Photography. During the winter months coffee mornings at various local venues have been popular, as h a v e Pr o b u s b o wl i n g tournaments. Over the decade attendances have remained consistently high, with an average of 130 -
140 members at each meeting. The Club is in a healthy financial state and has been able to purchase its own video display system and overhead screen, which are used at almost every meeting. “A number of Probus Clubs in New Zealand fall by the wayside each year. A study of the reasons why this happens usually reveals that the Clubs have got to a point where members become reluctant (or refuse) to take on the committee roles (including the Presidency) which are so vital to a Club’s future success. In Malvern’s Club about a quarter of the members have already taken a turn on the committee but it is likely to become gradually more difficult to fill these roles from an aging mem bership , unless th a t membership is replenished regularly,” Bob concluded. The group then enjoyed some outstanding entertainment as well as a sumptuous morning tea, catered by Ann Armstrong.

April Gardener punching control The second-ever rogaine for teams on horses held in New Zealand took place at Bottle L a ke f or es t, Bu r wo o d , Christchurch, on Sunday, August 4th. The event was in support of Darfield High School’s Rural College and close to one hundred took part. Teams of two to four, using maps specially prepared for the event, had three hours to score as many of 34 checkpoints as they could, without being late back. The checkpoints had different points values ranging from twenty to ninety, so a lot of pre-start strategy was involved. The penalty for being late was ten points per minute!
