After farming for many years at Glenroy, Michael Osborne, Osborne along with wife Marcia and daughter Jessica, Jessica now resides in West Melton. Many will know Michael as a farmer and businessman, but not everyone will know about his extensive background in aviation and the incredible art that he produces.

“Michael’s story is that of a hardworking kiwi bloke who has funded his passion for flying, through the sale of his artworks,” Rachael added.

After taking art at high school Michael went on to complete tertiary courses with the intention of making a career as a full-time artist. At this time his family farmed in the Otago area and Michael was a key asset to that farming operation. After considerable thought he made a decision to take on a farming role - as well as to continue with

“I’m very excited about this exhibition - the way that Michael gets the light to reflect off the wings of the aircraft, or the way he paints the stunning New Zealand landscape backgrounds, really give you a sense of actually being in the cockpit, flying yourself,” Rachael commented. “I personally know Michael and always find myself being drawn into the excitement of his work and the intelligence of his conversation. his passion - flying training with the ultimate goal of becoming a commercial pilot.

While completing his flight training Michael began painting aircraft paintings for other pilots.

What started out as being the odd artwork here and there for topdressing pilots, later turned into a series of aircraft that he had flown, like Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Mustangs.

Michael has created scenes of ‘Warbirds in Action’ over New Zealand, and has completed many commissioned works for ex RNZAF Aircrew. This led to him producing over 300 artworks spanning forty years.

Michael held his first solo exhibition in 1976, followed by two other exhibitions in the 1980’s, but these were of a range of works, not entirely made up of aircraft paintings. A pivotal point in his career came about a few years ago, when he took twelve large oil paintings to the Wanaka Air Show. Needless to say they were extremely well received.

“Many of his works are in private collections and not available to the public, however we are fortunate to announce that Michael’s new works will be shown as a collection and available to the public in a special exhibition at Terrace Downs Resort entitled, ‘Flying

Malvern Schools sent sports teams into Christchurch last week, to compete in the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Winter Tournament.

The selection for the teams was decided following the recent Malvern Primary Schools’ Winter Tournament.

It’s a great experience for someone new to the area and maybe wanting to find out what art related activities are available for them or their children and now it can be done all in one place.

The Malvern Community Arts Council, with the generous support of The Canterbury Community Trust, is putting on a free weekend of art activities where those attending can ‘Have a Go’. From 11am to 3pm on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September at the Darfield Recreation Centre budding artists will have the chance to see what arts related activities are available in the area and give something new a try. A wide range of arts related groups and businesses will be giving up their time to demonstrate what they do and they look forward to seeing plenty of people, young and old, at the Recreation Centre trying something new. On both days those attending will be able to try card making, jewellery making, see spinners in action, patchworking, try drawing with an experienced artist, or try felting.

On Saturday it’s an opportunity to see junior hip hoppers and jazz dancers from the Tara Marshall Dance Studio in action from 11.45am-12.45pm. At

12.45 until 1pm it’s the ‘Have a Go’ hip hop class (for over six year olds) and from 1pm until 1.15pm it’s the ‘Have a Go’ Jazz class (for over six year olds).

Mandy from Stage Door Drama will also be available all Saturday with children’s special drama classes to try at 11.15am, 1.15pm and 2.15pm.

The Malvern School of Music will also have several musical instruments to try on the Saturday.

On Sunday visitors can enjoy a performance by the Sheffield Ballet School at 12-12.45pm, then ’Have a Go’ at ballet between 1-1.20pm (pre school ballet) or 1.30-1.50pm (for over six year olds) before adult ’Have a Go’ ballet at 2-2.20pm.

The Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust, Malvern Lions Club and the Darfield Medical Centre are staging an evening in Darfield, on September 18th to promote Men's Health and the issues surrounding it.

The small organising committee has been busy arranging a number of speakers on three main subjects, Urology, Heart and Mental Health. The evening will be conducted by Chris Abbott who will be well known to most, and is returning to the district from his new home in Marlborough, especially for this occasion. Those considering attending can rest assured that the evening will be relaxed and somewhat informal with plenty of time for questions. Dr Johan Vlok of the Darfield Medical Centre will also address the meeting regarding their new facilities and the health providers available in the immediate area. This event is an ideal opportunity for males in the community to get involved in some informative discussion, f i nd ou t w h at var i o u s professionals can do for them when a problem occurs, and what district facilities are available. Amy Adams has held the role of MP for Selwyn since 2008. She is currently ranked fifteenth in Cabinet and is Minister for the Environment, as well as Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

As the local MP for Selwyn, Amy has advocated for Government funding for new infrastructure to meet the needs of Selwyn’s growing population, including the new Rolleston Police Station, Clearview School and new primary and secondary schools for Rolleston. Amy has also been a strong voice for road safety measures, particularly around local schools.

Amy’s successes as Minister for the Environment include working with scientists and water users to develop the first ever National Objectives Framework for fresh water; implementing recycling schemes for electronic equipment; developing a toolkit to help prevent harm for those working with hazardous chemicals and overseeing clean-up programmes at some of the country’s most polluted sites.

As Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amy has overseen the roll-out of the Government’s Ultrafast Broadband and Rural Broadband Initiatives.

Amy and her husband Don run a sheep and crop farm at Aylesbury, giving Amy a real understanding of the issues facing small rural businesses.

Prior to entering Parliament, Amy was a partner in Christchurch-based law firm Mortlock McCormack Law. She also held a number of roles in the community, including chair of the board of trustees of her local school.

The experience of living in both town and country has given Amy a wealth of experience in the reality of life for Selwyn people working hard to get ahead.

As a mother of two teenagers, Amy has a strong interest in the needs of families, particularly in the education and health sectors.

Sixty five students from the Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio took their NZAMD (New Zealand Association of Modern Dance) dance exams in July.

After a nervous wait the results have now come back and pupils can be justifiably proud of their achievements. Students sat exams in Jazz, Hip Hop or Tap. An ‘exam presentation day’ was held last week to showcase the hard work, skill and determination that these students put into their exams.

OFFICE 365 Every year one of the largest wholesalers that I use, called Ingram Micro, has a trade show in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

This year at one of the seminars their Managing Director said that in New Zealand we are way out in front of the world in Office 365 use. More than 40% of the users of Microsoft Office use Office 365. What does that mean??

Office 365 is an internet based suite of applications (programs) that live online. If you have email usually with Xtra or Vodafone (Clear etc.) it is ‘pop’ (point of presence) mail. If you sign up to one of the Office 365 plans - yes there are multiple - then your email uses something called ‘Exchange’.

Exchange allows you to do all sorts of fun and interesting stuff. Your mail is ‘pushed’ out to you. It comes up on the device, a PC if you have Outlook open, or a phone/tablet if you have it set up, immediately it’s received by the online Office 365 program. When you open the message and then decide to delete it, it’s gone from the cloud, gone from your phone/tablet whatever you are using to connect. You can connect to your mail from any device; meaning if you are on holiday and at your daughter’s place you can use her PC to pick up and send your mail.

Exchange has got a Calendar that, just like the email, is the same on any device. If both you and your wife, using different email addresses, are on Office 365 you can share each other’s Calendar and thereby know what each is doing or will be doing.

All of your contacts can be shared with full details - Addresses, Phone numbers, Names, Notes, Birthdays anything you like, and it’s all updated into the Internet (Cloud) then available to any of your devices. Have a look at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/

Fierce rivalry is always on the cards when teams from Mitchell Bros Sawmill and staff from Darfield ITM meet at their annual competition. The first year of the event saw competing teams challenge each other at ten-pin bowling, while last year they gave indoor cricket a shot. This year saw a return to ten-pin bowling.

ITM staff have been victorious title holders, complete with the prestigious trophy, for the last two years running. However this third round they were absolutely thrashed and lost it to the skills of the Mitchell Bros Sawmill team. The triumphant Sawmill team look forward to having their trophy on display and will no doubt do quite a bit of skiting about it for the next twelve months (or until the ITM team win it back!).

Selwyn District Council is offering a subsidised ‘Live to Ride’ motorcycle skills coaching programme which aims to help reduce the number of motorcycle crashes in the district.

In New Zealand, the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is twenty times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver. From 2009 - 2013, there were 57 recorded motorcycle crashes in Selwyn District resulting in three fatalities, 34 serious injuries, 31 minor injuries.

Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning commented that the number of motorcycle crashes is concerning and the Council started offering the ‘Live to Ride’ training late last year to try to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Selwyn.

Live to Ride provides subsidised motorcycle skills coaching where people can refresh their skills, and learn and practice new techniques. The courses are delivered

by New Zealand Transport Agency qualified trainers and include training to develop braking, handling and safe driving skills.

Since the Live to Ride programme started, thirty motorcyclists have taken part in the coaching sessions. Course evaluations by participants show the training is highly rated and has helped them improve their skills in a range of areas like turning on corners, coping with bad weather and hazards, braking and steering.

Ngaire added that the course offers motorcyclists the opportunity to learn how to assess risks and avoid problems that may cause crashes while driving. “The course provides a hands-on experience where people can learn in a team environment. The full day course also includes a three hour road excursion for practical training.”

These courses are highly subsidised. The upcoming courses involve a full day of training at only $50 per rider.

The Friends of Darfield Hospital will hold their Annual General Meeting at Trinity Church in Darfield on Tuesday, September 16th at 7.30pm.

This organisation which currently has twenty five elected members, was formed twenty-nine years ago with the broad goal of supporting and providing extra, valuable, items for the hospital. The many items provided do much to enhance the comfort, care and treatment of patients during their time in the hospital. A recent major project has been to provide new carpet for much of the lower storey of the building.

The guest speaker on the night will be Felicity Cox, formerly Redfern, who will talk about her job as a Radiation Therapist.

Last Saturday’s Casino Night, run by the Malvern Lions as a fundraiser for the Hororata Swimming Club was definitely an outstanding success. The Hororata Hall was packed with around 120 people and slick organisation by the Malvern Lions ensured everyone had an enjoyable time. Numerous local businesses and individuals c am e o n b o ar d w i th

sponsorship and that, along with the Hororata Swimming Club’s fantastic organisation helped raise approximately $4,500 for the cause.

Organisers were pleased with the wide age range attending, with a representation of youth and the more mature all enjoying themselves, side by side.

Radio Lollipop gives young patients a voice and a choice during their stay in hospital.

While they can't say ‘no’ to taking their medicine or receiving treatment, they can request their favourite songs, win prizes and hear their own voices on the radio.

Radio lollipop was officially launched in Christchurch in November 2013 with the aim of bringing a little more joy to the lives of those children in Christchurch Hospital. The

station brings radio direct into the Children’s Ward, broadcast from a converted campervan.

The pressures on physical space within Christchurch Hospital, due to damage s u s t a i n ed d u r i n g th e earthquake, necessitated an innovative solution for a broadcast facility.

Established in 1979 in England, Rad i o L o l l i p o p i s an international charity whose volunteers around the world provide care, comfort, play and entertainment to children in hospital. Volunteer DJ’s take requests, put children ‘on air’ from their bedside, while other

volunteers work at playing games, creating crafts and running competitions.

“Radio Lollipop provides a unique experience for children while they are in hospital. The hospital environment can be very stressful for children. Radio Lollipop provides distraction in a fun way,” said Anne Morgan, Service Manager of Child Health at Christchurch Hospital.

The Hororata children had their fun dressed in red and while so dressed, they called for donations. The children raised around $100 to be donated to Radio Lollipop ‘paint your town red’.

Porters Ski Area announced last week that they would be installing a new four-seater chairlift to replace its first T-bar.

It will be the closest chairlift to Christchurch and the first to be installed in the Canterbury region in nearly a decade. The chairlift is part of a multi-million dollar work programme over the summer.

“The chairlift will make skiing on our main family slope even easier” said General Manager, Uli Dinsenbacher of Kowai Bush.

“There will be considerably more skiable terrain, as the slope will no longer be cut in half by a T-bar lift track. It will al s o r eal l y ap p eal to intermediate snow boarders who prefer chairlifts over riding on T-bars.”

Other exciting developments include the construction of a new beginners slope practically level with the car park. With the beginner’s carpet lift located immediately beside the existing intermediate platter slope, this will mean a much easier progression for first time skiers and snowboarders. Learners will be able to walk directly from the car park onto the beginner’s area. Uli added, “we have eliminated that climb up the hill to the beginners area, a really w el co m e i m p r o ve m en t, especially for children and their families.”

The chairlift, which has been manufactured in Austria by the Doppelmayr company, has an electric drive, is 689 metres long and has a vertical rise of 215 metres. The 93 chairs on the chairlift can carry 2,000 skiers an hour up the slope, doubling the current T-bar capacity.

Earthworks for the chairlift installation will start as soon as the ski season finishes in early October, while the chairlift towers will be installed after Christmas. Extensive earthworks will not only widen the terrain on the former T-bar 1 slope, but will also remove the narrow funnel known as D6, which has always constricted the bottom part of the area.

A new short T-bar will link the

top of the chairlift to the existing T-bar 2 lift. In the future it is planned to replace all the remaining T-bars with a single new chairlift.

Managing Director, Simon Harvey commented, “the great response we have had from customers when we built the new café, installed a magic carpet, and, more recently put additional snowmaking on the mountain, has given the owners confidence to make the most substantial investment in Porters’ history. With the major rebuild now underway in Christchur ch, the s tellar economic growth in New Zealand, and, the continued growth of the Asia Pacific Region, we believe there is a compelling basis for tourism investment in Canterbury.”

“We will have a very busy sum m er wi th all th es e improvements, but the promise of a new chairlift with the added bonus of more terrain plus streamlined access for all our custo mers wi ll m ak e i t worthwhile,” Uli stressed.

Malvern Enviro Group has registered for, and is promoting, ‘Keep NZ Beautiful’ week.

‘Keep New Zealand Beautiful’ Clean-Up Week is one of the largest nationwide community events held in New Zealand. In 2013 a total of 365 sites around the country were registered, representing an increase of almost 50% on 2012. 40,000 volunteers donated 79,610 hours of their time and collected an estimated 47.3 tonnes of rubbish.

The Malvern Enviro Group are encouraging, families, individuals and groups to take part in the ‘Keep New Zealand Beautiful’ week.

The Enviro group are asking volunteers to ‘clean up’ anywhere they like in Malvern,

be it streets, schools, or local parks. Bags and safety gloves will be provided and bright clothing is essential to be seen.

Children need adult supervision.

Sunday, September 21st, is the day for the Malvern clean up and an assembly/briefing will take place in the CRT car park, South Terrace, Darfield, at 10am. From here the Malvern clean up will take place with volunteers returning to the CRT car park, depositing their full bags of rubbish, and enjoying a sausage sizzle and spot prizes at 12.15pm.

The usual yellow daffodils bobbed their heads along with other spring delights, but the stunning collection of Camellia's brought gasps at their beauty and uniqueness.

After general meeting discussions, the speaker for this afternoon was Rachel Vogan - 'The Happy Gardener'.

Rachel told those present she was definitely a 'plant-aholic' and passionate about Canterbury and gardens.

Rachel is currently busy writing, commentating on radio shows, as well as on the board of the 'Ellerslie Flower Show'. While disappointed that the 2015 Show won’t go ahead, Rachel commented that she understood the Council's stance. If all this wasn’t busy enough, Rachel has recently acquired ‘Ballymoney’ a property in Tai Tapu, where she is busy making some changes to the gardens.

She still had time to come and share her knowledge with Club members though, through a question and answer session. The questions were varied, and the discussions and answers fabulous. it also allowed other members to offer tips from their own experiences.

“We thank you Rachel for your insights and we all go away to our gardens armed with more information, so that we might have those gardens we all dream of.”

When local Espress Yourself Café owner, Kate Southen attended a Master Builders’ function in the Ilex centre at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, it was to support her son Tom who was amongst the finalists of the Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year. Tom attended school in Darfield before heading into the city to complete his education and is now in his third year of a building apprenticeship with Gregg Builders rural branch, Farmbuild. Tom has been involved in a lot of construction in the local area over his term with the company, and is currently completing work in the Kaikoura region.

Tom, at 22 years old is employed by Farmbuild in Christchurch and trained through the B CITO. H e impressed judges who say he presented as an outstanding apprentice that comprehensively showed his broad knowledge and ability in construction. His involvement in his project from site set-out to handover required a high degree of planning and a clear technical understanding of various s tructu r al an d f inish in g materi als. H e was also complimented for displaying leadership across his interaction with both clients and sub trades and ensured a high level of health and safety procedures.

The judges went on to comment that Tom’s toolkit, work vehicle a n d o ve r a l l p e r s o n a l presentation were nothing short of exemplary and he displayed attributes any professional builder would be proud of.

Tom was awarded an array of prizes. including his choice of either a study grant to the value of $2,000 or $2,000 to spend at Carters. He was also offered a place on an Outward Bound Leadership Programme, as well as the sought after title of Central South Island Registered Master Builders Carters 2014 Apprentice of the Year.

Registered Master Builders acting chief executive said it was gratifying to see a strong group o f co n ten d er s p u tti n g themselves forward to be judged against their peers at this year’s Apprentice of the Year competition.

Las t S atu rday s aw the conclusion of the Malvern netball season. 2014 has been an extremely good year for the Malvern Netball Centre and things came to an end with a very successful finals’ day. The sun shone, teams dressed up and lots of fun was had across all the courts.

In the finals themselves there were some incredibly close results.

Springfield/Sheffield Seniors met a strong Kirwee Klassix team in the Senior A Finals and were determined to defend their previous year’s title.

Seconds before the final whistle blew Springfield/Sheffield scored their winning goal saving them

from a potential draw and extra ti me. Unfo rtun atel y on e Springfield/Sheffield player was injured and taken by ambulance to hospital but after treatment and a few bandages managed to get to some after-game celebrations with the team.

Final score Springfield/Sheffield 49-48 Kirwee Klassix.

In the Senior B final, Darfield Fauxpas played a strong and consistent game to beat the Springfield/Sheffield Bulls 2724.

The all Darfield, Senior C and Primary A final saw some talented players take to the courts.

In the Senior C Grade Darfield Sting came away with the win

against the Darfield Rattlerz 1712 and Darfield Smashers won the Primary A final, beating Darfield Dragons 35-9.

The Junior Netball had a small Round Robin amongst themselves and some fabulous costumes were displayed.

Supporters and sponsors, as well as the people that work behind the scenes all make the Malvern Netball competition possible and all should be thanked for doing so. The role of the umpire shouldn’t be forgotten either, as without them there would be no game.

But for now it’s time for netballers to pursue their summer sports and look forward to the 2015 season.

The Springfield Sheffield Seniors had the task of defending their title again this year, as well as trying to retain two other awards from last year.

They welcomed three new players into the team this year; Katie Pratt, Emma Hubbard and Mel Templeton, so the pressure was on but all fitted in well.

With eight teams competing at Malvern senior grade level this year, it gave players some great competition. With the unfortunate departure of Kirwee black after the first round, due to injuries, it gave the Darfield Comets an opportunity to once again take their place in the senior Grade, for the second round.

Springfield Sheffield Seniors almost made it through the competition unbeaten until the last game of the last round, where they were beaten by a strong Kirwee Senior side, by one goal.

They did however, have enough points to keep them at the top of the table. Due to a of couple unfortunate injuries Rachael Peddie was forced off court and into a supporting management role for the second half of the season.

“Coming into the semi finals against the Darfield Mib's off a loss, really gave us the motivation that we needed to get our heads in the game. We came out on top to take us into the finals against a very strong Kirwee Klassix team,” Rachael commented.

“This game was heavily contested and in the end, after almost giving the team heart seizures, the saviour GD tipped the ball out of court, seconds before the final whistle blew. This saved us from a potential draw and the need to go into overtime. It was a fantastic game for a final and the Klassixs certain bought it to us.

Unfortunately Mel received an ankle injury just after the beginning of the final quarter, but after a trip in an ambulance to hospital and a few bandages, she managed to get to some after game celebrations with the team.”

“We would like to thank all of our supporters and sponsors, as well as the people that work behind the scenes making this competition possible. Lets not forget the umpires, as without them there would be no game.”

“Thanks also to Val Mackenzie for taking us to, and once again winning the final for the second consecutive year- its was a great way to finish our 50th Jubilee year and we look forward to competing in another great competition next year,” Rachael concluded.
