Darfield says good bye to its DOSH (Darfield Out of School Hours) programme, but as one door closes another most definitely opens. DOSH has been up and running since October 2009 and during that time has provided a safe and positive environment, with child focused activities, for school children requiring care after school and during holidays. They always aimed to make their charges feel welcomed, included and important as individuals, while providing a fun and proactive programme. “We would just like to say a big thank you for all the support we have received over the years,” said Dosh staff member Teisha Lee. Lee “DOSH would not have been able to exist without this amazing support from families in the community.” Children aren’t to be left out though - as the arrival of Rebecca Scott’s Busy Bumbles to Darfield sees them well taken care of. “We welcome them to the area,” concluded Teisha, “and wish them all the best.”

Alan (Al) Sinclair may be a relatively new face to Darfield, but there’s nothing new about his knowledge of food and coffee. Al arrived in the area to spend time with his partner, local pre-school teacher Denise Petrie and brought with him his new business initiative too - a food truck! Emblazoned with distincti ve graff iti s tyl ed signage, ‘Tag Coffee’ is fast being recognised around Darfield streets, and at sporting events and markets. Believed to be the first of its kind in the Selwyn District, Al has spent considerable time and money complying with all necessary licencing requirements. Al originates from Dunedin, but has travel led the world extensively, and even had a stint in the Navy. Al trained as a chef in England, and while there competed in a popular televised food programme. Britain’s Best Dish was televised in 2008, and saw Al take out the grand prize (and a coveted trophy) for ‘Best Dessert’ against tough and talented competition. Al’s foody skills and his mobile kitchen are available to cater for casual weddings and special occasions, such as birthdays, family get-togethers, and Christmas parties. He is more

Coming soon on Sundays (between 10am and 2pm) Al will produce a variety of pizzas (that the News team have no hesitation in recommending) at the Christchurch, Riccarton House Artisan Market, but for now it’s Darfield’s turn. Each Friday and Saturday night, on Darfield’s main street outside the Jailhouse building, Al will market his wonderful range of pizzas. An ideal opportunity to sample Tag’s perfect pizzas locally! Al’s van is a Wongi Wilson art piece. Wongi is responsible for many of the massive murals
adorning containers and vacant spaces in Christchurch, as well as being the first artist to hold a solo, graffiti art exhibition in Christchurch. Al’s vehicle stands out from the crowd and he is available for coffee deliveries to Darfield offices, stores or workshops just by giving him a call.
For functions bookings or coffee deliveries see the advertisement in this issue for contact details. Al is also available to provide coffee and/or food for groups organising sites/stalls at A & P Shows, Farmers’ Markets or fundraising events.

DANGEROUS GAMES The Darfield Police are disappointed that a dangerous and potentially fatal, practise is currently being undertaken, probably by youngsters, in the Kirwee area. The stupid and mindless positioning of both clear and brown coloured, wide parcel tape as well as yellow rope, across Courtenay Road Is likely to have a dangerous outcome. The rope/tape has been stretched across the road both left and right from the Main West Road. The rope or tape is kept elevated from the surface by being attached to the 50 kilometre speed signs. “The act of installing these tapes/ropes is senseless and could kill a motorbike rider or cyclist,” said Darfield Police Constable, Dave Pitkethley. Pitkethley “They have been erected in the dark, and some parent must have missed parcel tape or rope from their homes/garages. Parents should know where their children are at this time of the evening,” Dave said. Anyone with any information about these events should contact the Darfield Police immediately
CARE NEEDED This weekend sees the staging of the twentieth Malvern Game Hunters’ hunting competition. With more entries than ever before, it’s timely to remember basic safety rules and abide by the law. Darfield Police would like all those involved with the event to make firearms safety paramount and to only hunt on land that permission is gained for. They also can’t stress enough that while enjoying the festivities at the weigh-in is a convivial part of the competition - those attending shouldn’t under any circumstances, drink and drive. “It should be remembered,” said Constable Dave Pitkethley, Pitkethley of the Darfield Police, “that the prizegiving and weigh-in is a family event and accordingly the behaviour should recognise this.” “Any breaches of the wild animal act, the arms act, or trespassing, will result in charges being brought,” Dave stressed. The News wishes the organisers all the best for a successful competition with safety and common sense to the fore at all times.

‘Four Seasons in One Place’ Katrina McGettigan and Michelle Green have captured all seasons with their stunning landscape paintings in the upcoming exhibition at Terrace Downs Resort. These popular artists both produce works that can be described as uniquely New Zealand, both being able to capture the beauty of the land and the seasons of the soul in a single frozen moment of time. Michelle Green is quietly creative and hails from the West Coast. Having been artistic all of her
life Michelle’s passion for painting comes from the inspiring scenes and weather that are prevalent on the Coast. The West Coast is rich in history and is well known for its wild weather. It’s this that helps to flame the fire that fuels Michelle’s passion for its ever changing moods. When Michelle comes across wet, damp and mossy old buildings she is inspired to delve deeper into the history of the places that she paints, imagining what it

would be like to live there. Katrina McGettigan meanwhile is from the East Coast, in Christchurch. A kindred spirit who connects with the heritage of Canterbury and the land, just as Michelle does. Katrina projects her interpretation differently, in the form of landscape moods, colours and light to depict mountains and lake reflection scenes. Katrina works full time at Selwyn House Preschool as an art teacher, and was extremely successful in her exhibition last year at Terrace Downs. Her works proved popular not only with visitors, but also locals looking for a strong Canterbury connection. This year, Katrina has been exploring the changing weather patterns in the sky and finding out how it changes the light, shadow and mood of a scene. Both artists have joined together to produce an exhibition of paintings at Terrace Downs Resort that will feature a striking series of scenes from the South Island’s East and West Coast. Terrace Downs Art Exhibitions feature a unique opening night where those attending are able to dine with the artists and enjoy great company along with a delicious buffet prepared by Terrace Downs’ chefs. Add to this, wonderful music from the soulful Kris Trousselot on the piano and the scene is set for a fabulous evening. Bookings for the opening are essential. The exhibition is free to attend and will run from August 1st - September 5th during Resort opening hours.

26th July - 3rd August ‘Viva Mexico’ is the story of an American Senator and his daughter Lucille who arrive in Mexico carrying a large bank draft for the President. They are held up by bandits led by El Zorro (who is really Ramon) and left with only the clothes they are wearing. Their baggage is bought back to ‘El Rancho Grande’, a small hotel run by Mama Inez, where it is searched in the hope of finding the draft. The Americans meanwhile have been assisted by the Police and directed to the same hotel to rest, after their ordeal. The baggage doesn’t yield the draft and so it is decided to ‘search’ the Americans, without their knowing. This leads to some hilarious scenes with Pablo and Pepe, the comedy duo, getting into all sorts of trouble. Of course there’s some love and attraction involved, coupled with some resentment and a bit of spite before the draft is finally located. Finally after a bit of tension, a shot is fired, and as in all good stories, right triumphs over wrong and everyone gets their just desserts.
Rob Kellock makes his Players debut as Bernardo - the slightly bumbling police officer.
The spectacular Aztec scene saw Lynn Booth take on the role of Priestess. Lighting and costuming were excellent.

The News went along to one of the last dress rehearsals before tonight’s opening performance of Viva Mexico. As always, the Kirwee Community Hall was warm and welcoming and everything front of house was organised and ready for an audience. Kirwee Players president (and appropriately a member of both casts), Malcolm Begg commented in his welcome message from the programme that, “when Kirwee Players was seven years young in 1983 we did Viva Mexico. Who ever thought that in 2013 we would still be in show business. “ Talented director, Mabel Knight commented that she was pleased to see quite a number of new faces in this year’s cast. The curtains opened on an extremely bright and colourful Viva Mexico stage - setting the tone for the rest of the production. Toe tapping music and a focus on entertainment were to the fore and it was hard not to start singing along. Apart from the occasional rather odd ‘Mexican’ accent - the plot was easy to follow and the diction

(apart from the accent) good. There were some lovely voices evident, Lucille (Izzy Tocker) being one of them and the full cast singing was outstanding. The vibrancy, colour and constant action kept audience interest high and although many of the faces on stage had been on stage many times before - there was a freshness about the production that belied that fact. Jane Rollings was as good as ever and she was joined on stage by her two equally talented daughters, Amy and Jodie. an audience pleaser. This reviewer had planned an intermission departure, but was spellbound until the end. Definitely a show not to be missed - bright, fun, energetic and entertaining - who could This year’s show is directed by local and well-known identity Mabel Knight, with Diane Coad as musical director, Barbara Brookman, pianist and Amanda Hopkins taking care of the choreography. Designer extraordinaire Don Gillanders has once again been responsible for the sets.

wrong with the back of the leg or Achilles. More on this later, but let’s go through what the Achilles actually is. The Achilles is the tendon at the back of the leg that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. It is the thickest and strongest tendon in the body and has a role in propulsion during walking and running (it sustains six to eight times your body weight during walking and increases to ten to twelve times your body weight during running or sprinting activities). All tendons have a poor blood supply therefore any damage to them results in a slower healing time. This is why your pain has not resolved and is probably getting worse. Achilles tendinopathy can occur in anyone, at anytime but is most common in those who increase their running distance or intensity. It also occurs in those who change the surface they walk or run on, have poor footwear or those with poor biomechanics. These abnormal stresses cause the Achilles to become irritated. This irritation causes the Achilles to break down and the fibres that give it strength begin to become disorganised. This disorganisation results in the Achilles being less able to help with propulsion and become stiff and painful. So how can physiotherapy help with this condition? The main role is to address the cause of the problem; if not then the problem will continue to get worse. You may need to reduce your running time or distance and change your footwear, or you may need to wear orthotics. Exercises to stretch and strengthen the Achilles will also be required to make the fibres realign therefore reducing the pain and discomfort associated with the problem. So come in and see us at Darfield Physiotherapy and Gym, if this sounds like you. We will get you back out there running and enjoying winter.

You may have read about the Reserve Bank putting pressure on banks to reduce the number of low equity loans they are able to hold on their books. This is to increase bank stability should there be a major slump in the property market, leaving home owners owing more money on their homes than they are worth. However, if you’re servicing is strong; ie. you have plenty of money left over after the debt servicing calculation, then you will still be in with a good chance with Banks. There are many ways to make your lending look more attractive to Banks. Pay off as much personal debt as you can. Get rid of credit cards, or reduce the limits down to a bare minimum and pay them off in full each month. Pay off hire purchase or personal loans and look into Kiwi Saver, if you haven’t already joined. Getting your finances in order before you embark on house ownership will not only make the process easier for you, but you will also be much better equipped to take on a home loan. Meet some of the team at Darfield ITM - these faces are part of the crew that will assist with the building process. More importantly they, like the rest of the Darfield ITM team, get to know their customers, get to know the projects they’re undertaking and get to know their requirements and expectations. That’s good old fashioned customer service, with more than a fair amount of expertise thrown in. Darfield ITM customers aren’t just numbers, staff strive to build business relationships with them that are second to none.

Gary Gifkins has been Trade Manager at Darfield ITM since 2009. He took up the role after gaining considerable experience at Kaikoura ITM. This vast experience has been invaluable at Darfield ITM and his product knowledge has assisted many, many customers to date. Gary has built up a great relationship with both suppliers and customers and his exceptional customer service skills are appreciated by all. He goes out of his way to satisfy ITM customers’ requirements and for him, service is definitely the name of the game. “We want to make sure all our valued customers receive the best possible service we can provide.” Gary concluded.
Steve Borrie joined Darfield ITM almost two years ago in the role of Operations Manager. He has had many years of experience in the building industry and it’s this experience that enables him to liaise and advise customers who consult him. Steve is responsible for pricing up plans after the ITM contracted quanitity surveyor has assessed them. Then it’s up to Steve to source quotes/prices for frames, trusses, concrete, roofing, aluminium windows and electrical wiring. When all the required quotes are received, the pricing package is presented to the builder and/or owner, making the whole process easy, painless and professional. “We are able to price any project from a small job to a complete new house, so bring your plans in and get the process underway at Darfield ITM,” Steve commented.

He joined the team after having five years experience at a plumbing supplies merchant in Christchurch. Brett can advise on trade products for waste water, storm water and potable (drinking) water. “While basic maintenance can be done by homeowners, any work requiring a permit needs a qualified tradesman. I would advise all my customers to think carefully about attempting any work themselves as it may void insurance should it go wrong,” Brett cautioned. For plumbing advice and supplies Brett can be consulted at the ITM store, Darfield.

Moore Builders Nick Fisher joined Darfield ITM as a school leaver in 2008 and is now the trade and yard coordinator. Initially Nick began at ITM as a yardman and built up a wealth of knowledge of timber products. Moving to a sales position in the store, this knowledge of the timber side of the business was invaluable to customers. He has of course expanded his product knowledge during his time in-store and this, along with his excellent customer service skills, makes him a popular consultant on the shop floor. In his new role as trade and yard coordinator, Nick has increased team efficiency and by taking over the timber and board stock ordering and receipting has relieved Gary and Steve of significant pressure. Customers whose orders are relayed to Nick can rest assured they will be packed and ready for collection, or that delivery has been arranged.
Darfield’s ITM is a total one stop shop - no more having to go to the plumbers’ merchants, the timber yard, the paint store or the hardware shop - Darfield ITM stocks, sources or supplies everything to get the job done from the smallest DIY to the biggest building project. “Customer service and customer convenience is extremely important to us,” said Darfield ITM trade manager, Gary Gifkins. “Darfield ITM can deal with your job from manufacturers right through to site delivery. No need to go to town - everything they can do, ‘we’ can do just as well, if not better. We understand our clients’ needs and serving the area we all come from, means we know the ‘rural’ way. Something that many places in Christchurch just don’t ‘get’. To many big city outlets, you’re a number, a transaction, a sale - but to Darfield ITM, we want to get to know you, want to make sure you get what you need and be rest assured - you really matter,” Gary added.

Darfield ITM recommends and supports local businesses - (contractors, electricians, plumbers, painters, etc) businesses that uphold their reputations and take pride in
doing a job for their neighbours, their friends, their community. Darfield ITM stock timber products from local timber supplier, Mitchell’s Sawmill, and can
also source and supply all their customers’ pre-frame and truss requirements for transportation to the job site. Darfield ITM can also quantify and price house plans. The
company has an experienced quantity surveyor available, followed by in-store pricing at Darfield. When dealing with steel, mesh and concrete for house foundations and floor slabs - it pays to deal with the professionals and dealing with professionals locally, close to home, is a huge added bonus. Darfield ITM really comes into its own for the supply of all timber products including beams plus all the other components that form the structure of a house. They have recently been supplying sizeable quantities of house piles for relocatable dwellings coming into the district from redzone areas. Affordable, recyclable houses with plenty of life left in them - some are relatively new - and ITM can supply everything needed for a refit or a refurbish. ITM can quote for electrical
fit outs - with prices able to be obtained for having a house fully electrically wired and using local contractors. Add to this already impressive list: • The supply and fixing of roofs (Darfield ITM recommend and supply Colorsteel Endura range - a top quality, well known product that customers can be confident about). • The store also attend to the supply and fixing of spouting and fascia. • Aluminium joinery • Internal doors and hardware And Darfield ITM really are a one stop shop. They are convenient for any building or DIY project being undertaken and because they’re local, they’re no more than a quick call away, for any unforeseen requirements.

They offer a wide range of products suited to pond and water features of all sizes, as well as expert advice. Their showroom was a great place to be, as they had a large selection of working displays, and their outdoor courtyard has numerous established water garden settings. Aquatic plants were also on sale, as specialised species for new or existing ponds. Oderings in Barrington was next on the list, and after a leisurely lunch in the Centre café, Garden Club members me t wit h P ropa gat ion Manager, Ray Lawson. Lawson He explained to the group about how the propagation of many of the plants supplied to their garden centres throughout Christchurch, is undertaken on their extensive seven acre property.
Oderings began on this property in the 1920s and have seen many differing plant trends with herbs currently gaining popularity. New releases are always of great interest to gardeners, and Ray had a few to show the group. One new release in particular, was a lovely Hellebore. These make a stunning display in the garden at this time of the year. Homeward bound, the group was looking forward to being able to plant a few goodies acquired during the day, and experiment with some new ideas. “Wrap up well, and get out and about, there is always something to see in the garden. If not in yours, then maybe someone else’s,” concluded Pat Newmarch!

The Stitch n’ Sew n’ Sews are a friendly group of women who meet at the Darfield Library, on the first and third Thursday morning of each month, for a cost of $5 per session. There are around ten regular members, and all descriptions of stitchers are welcome, from patchwork/quilters, crocheters, and knitters to embroiderers. The group’s oldest member Emile Hunt, Hunt in her 90s, is a talented quilter as well as making amazing crocheted blankets. While the youngest member Emma Kellock, just twelve years old, only joins the group during the school holidays, but has won numerous trophies at the Courtenay A & P Show for her work. Other members cover a variety of ages and abilities, with hand quilters, machine quilters, a creative artist and a bag lady! However, the one thing they all have in common is a love of being creative, and the enjoyment gained in sharing this passion with like-minded people. New members are always welcome, and beginners have the opportunity to draw on a combined knowledge of several hundred years of experience from members.

Not only is it time for the Darfield Swimming Pool AGM (see advertisement in this issue for further details), but it’s also time for the pool committee and th e f acil i ty’ s u s ers to acknowledge the appreciated financial assistance received from Fonterra. The sponsorship and support the Pool Committee received from the Fonterra Grass Roots fund this year has enabled it to purchase a Pace Clock, Water Aerobic Equipment, Dive Rings and Play Floats, all of which added to a very successful Pool Season.
The Pool was opened for the season early in November 2012 and on November 25th was the venue for an extr emel y successful fun day, complete with sausage sizzle etc. It was ironic that the first full season of the Darfield Pool operating as a heated pool, was also one which saw a warmer summer than has been experienced for years. However it did enable swimmers to be in the water for longer periods of time and greatly increased their enjoyment. The Darfield Pool had approximately 11,000 swimmers through the gates during the season, which was a
huge increase on previous years. Swimming lessons and swim club both proved to be popular with younger pool goers, as well as for some adults. The much awaited water aerobic classes were held twice weekly using two local instructors. These classes were well attended and enjoyed by all young and old. Acknowledging the ever growing population in the area and the ever increasing usage of the pool - the pool committee would welcome a good turnout from the community at its annual general meeting.
Since its inception in 2011 the Hororata Community Trust has been actively involved in the local community. Inaugural Chair, Olive Webb, Webb has worked tirelessly to help get the Trust off the ground and deliver on the first two years of the Hororata Highland Games. “Probably the highlight of the past two years has been the success of these Hororata H igh l and G am es,” O li ve commented. “This event brings thousands of visitors and competitors to the area, not to m en ti o n r e ve n u e an d fundraising opportunities for all groups in the community.” Due to other commitments, Olive has resigned as Chair. “Working as Ch ai r of th e Ho ro r ata Community Trust has been incredibly rewarding and I'm pleased to be in a position to leave this role with the Trust, in such a strong position. Operationally, we are well resourced by a team of fantastic
volunteers and service partners. We have instigated regular communications with the community and we have helped develop local resources such as swimming pools and the Stables in the Hororata Domain.” The Hororata Community Trust is pleased to announce Richard Lang as its new Chair. Richard has been a Trustee since the Trust was established, and as a partner at Duncan Cotterill, (Lawyers) was intimatel y involved in the development of the Trust documents. Richard brings a depth of experience to the Trust and has strong ties to the Hororata region, where his wife grew up and parents-in-law still reside. “We are entering a
new, exciting phase in the Trust's work. The public discussions on the Future of Hororata have been fantastic and it's great to see so much passion and vision coming from the community. Now, as Chair of the Hororata Community Trust, I can't wait to see where the community takes these focus groups and discussions.” Richard said. “As for the Hororata Highland Games, they are now an annual event and will only get better and better.” The Hororata Community Trust consists of Chairperson Richard Lang, and Trustees, Mark Stewart, Stewart Lyn Nell and Olive Webb.

This season, Malvern Youth Hockey have a great team of enthusiastic boys who are motivated to grow and develop their hockey skills. With five team members coming up from U13 last year plus a new player in the squad, the team, after nine games, is really beginning to gel, and the improvement has been noticeable. With extremely strong competition in the first division, everyone has been challenged, both in their levels of fitness, as well as their skill-sets.

DEADLINE 1pm TUESDAY
Four old timers were playing their weekly game of golf, one remarked how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning, roll out of bed and without an argument go directly to the golf course, meet his buddies and play a round. His buddies all chimed in said, "Let's do it! We'll make it a priority; figure out a way and meet here early, Christmas morning." Months later, that special morning arrives, and there they are on the golf course. The first guy says, “Boy this game cost me a fortune! I bought my wife a diamond ring and she can't take her eyes off it.” The second guy says, “I spent a ton too. My wife is at home planning the cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures.” The third guy says ,“well my wife is at home admiring her new car and reading the manual.” They all turned to the last guy in the group who is staring at them like they have lost their minds. “I can't believe you all went to such expense for this golf game. I just said, “well babe, Merry Christmas! It's a great morning - intercourse or golf course?” She said, “Don’t forget your sweater.”
