Clearview Primary has been using the program as a fun learning tool for students for the past two years. On August 27th, as part of a twenty four hour New Zealand wide challenge Jayden made it into the Mathletics Hall of Fame, finishing in the top one hundred by earning a whooping 28,593 Mathletics points in one day! After a few months of waiting, Jayden recently received his certificate and some limited edition w rist ban ds.

Merry Christmas from the team at the Rolleston News The office will close on Friday 19th Dec 2014 and will re-open on Monday 19th Jan 2015 Lisa Bowater and Zita Bezuidenhout of the newly formed Selwyn Breast cancer Support group.

Zita Bezuidenhout and Lisa Bowater of Rolleston are the coordinators of a new support group for people experiencing breast cancer in the Selwyn area.

Zita, married with two daughters and three grandchildren, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2012. Since her diagnosis, she has met a number of women in the area who've also experienced breast cancer and felt she could offer some support to others by starting

this group.

Lisa, also married with two children, lost her mother to breast cancer seventeen months ago and has other family members also suffering from the disease.

Beginning in January 2015, the group will meet on the last Thursday of each month. These meetings will provide an opportunity for women and men, who have had a recent, or past, diagnosis of breast cancer to meet, share experiences over

The Christmas lunch was in place of the normal meeting.

Local events are also being planned by communities at Greenpark and Dunsandel in March – dates for events will be confirmed early next year.

Some events are being organised by local community groups or township committees as ‘Summer of Fun’ events which are funded by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust and supported by CERA. Other events are being organised by Selwyn District Council.

Motorists are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys this summer and to take care on Canterbury roads with a number of maintenance and safety projects underway throughout the region.

The NZ Transport Agency’s Journey Manager Lee Wright said that summer is the best time to repair road surfaces and carry out important safety and road improvement works.

She adds that it is critical that motorists slow down and observe the speed restrictions through work sites. “Speeding through the sites can be dangerous for road workers and other motorists, as well as causing damage to the works that have already been completed.”

It is planned that there will be no work on the highways from December 19th to January 5th.

“This will help reduce delays.

However, there will be speed

restrictions in place, even when the site is unoccupied.”

Motorists need to be mindful of the following works which may result in some delays to their journeys this summer: North Canterbury: SH7: Work has begun on road repairs and resealing 600 metres of the highway at Summerdale, between Boundary Stream and Cow Creek, and 600 metres just north of the Boyle River Bridge.

A few hundred metres west of Hanmer Junction, a kilometre of the highway will be repaired and resealed from the end of Jan. SH1: North of the Amberley township, work will begin midFebruary on repairing and resealing 300 metres of the highway.

Almost a kilometre of the highway at Kanuka corner, north of Kaikoura, will be repaired and resealed early next year.

Canterbury: SH73: The repairs and resurfacing of 300 metres

of highway on Porter’s Pass will begin in February and take about a week to complete.

Work will begin after Christmas on repairs and resealing at Joins Cutting, near Porter’s Pass. This work includes the installation of a new guardrail.

Earthworks are underway just to the west of Arthur’s Pass Village to repair and reseal about 600 metres of the highway.

Pavement works will begin in January and motorists can expect delays of up to twenty minutes during the four-week work programme.

Mid Canterbury: SH1: Work will begin later in January on two sites south of the Rakaia townsh ip repair ing and resurfacing 2.5kms of the highway. This work is expected to take about ten weeks to complete.

A happy pooch enjoys a bath in the dogwash at Rolleston’s Foster Dog Park.

Dog owners will be able to give their canine friends a bath in a new coin-operated dog wash machine now operating at the Foster Dog Park in Rolleston.

The K9000 Dogwash is the first of its kind in Selwyn and has been set up by Rolleston operator Jacqui Rosewall who leases the space from the Selwyn District Council. The selfservice wash machine is permanently based at the dog park, and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Jacqui commented that the machine usually takes about ten minutes to give a dog the full treatment from shampoo to blow dry. “It starts with a normal warm water shampoo or a flea shampoo. This is followed by a conditioner and plain water

rinse, before a blast with the blow dryer, which has a low speed for smaller dogs, and a stronger warm air blast for larger animals.”

"Any sized dog can be washed.

There is also a clip you can tether the animal to, before they get washed,” Jacqui added.

This will provide a clean, safe place for people to wash their dogs saving all the fuss of cleaning pets at home. “No one likes the smell of wet dog lingering around after they’ve washed their animals, so having the do-it-yourself wash machine will offer a great alternative to doing it at home,” Jacqui said.

“There are a huge number of dogs in Selwyn and a lot of people bring them to the dog park anyway, so it makes sense

to clean them here too,” she said.

Selwyn has around 12,000 registered dogs and more than sevent y new dogs are registered in the district each month.

The coin-operated dog wash system costs $10 for ten minutes and is located at the Foster Dog Park on the corner of Springston Rolleston Road and Goulds Road, Rolleston.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE SELWYN POLICE There has been an increase in the number of residential and rural burglaries in the Selwyn District over the last two weeks.

The burglaries are typically being done during the day when the occupiers are away from their properties. Selwyn Police are asking that home owners/occupiers take extra security measures such as locking their house, out buildings and vehicles when going out, and using burglar alarms, if fitted.

The Police also ask that any suspicious activity be reported, including vehicles or people.

They ask that people do not phone their local Police station and leave a message, as they may not be there and this information needs to be reported as soon as it noticed.

If it is urgent, for example if anyone has disturbed someone on their property, phone 111. Otherwise please phone 03 363 7400 and ask for Communications. They will assess the information and send the nearest Police patrol.

There’s plenty of activity happening at Selwyn Libraries these school holidays to keep the children busy, including the Selwyn Libraries Summer Camping Ch allenge and Summer Reading Programme.

The Selwyn Libraries Summer Challenge involves completing eight challenges around the district such as taking photos, drawing pictures and visiting different libraries.

“The programme will get kids out and about enjoying the summer, while they explore what Selwyn has to offer, right here on our doorstep,” commented Vicki Carlyon, Carlyon Selwyn Libraries Manager.

Children will be challenged to complete tasks including taking photos of themselves reading a book to their pet, inside a tent of sheets or blankets, and at a local landmark or natural feature such as a war memorial or the mountains at Arthur’s Pass. Everyone who returns their completed challenge sheet to a Selwyn library receives a free pass to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and also goes in the draw to win a Tablet plus other prizes.

Selwyn Libraries are also running a Summer Camping Reading Programme for primary school aged children through the months of December and January.

Children can enrol and pick up

their Summer Camping Reading starter pack at any local library.

Participants need to read ten or more books to go in the draw to win prizes including a Tablet, tent and toys. They can also visit their local library after every two books they read and tell a library staff member about the story, to win prizes along the way. “ Th e S u m m er Readin g Programme will be a great incentive to keep kids reading over the summer break and encourage them to choose books they wouldn’t normally read. The prizes are a bonus!” said Vicki.

Spaces are limited for the reading programme so parents or caregivers are encouraged to register children at a local library soon to receive a starter pack and information sheet.

Shane Bishop from MWH New Zealand Ltd said there were significant technical complexities and difficulties to overcome in designing the scheme. "The design of the scheme was well underway bef or e t h e Can t er bu r y earthquakes occurred. The earthquakes created a number of challenges as Selwyn district

needed to plan for more rapid population growth in light of the earthquakes so the design of the scheme needed to be amended to reflect this."

A solar air drying hall was incorporated into the design of the new Pines Wastewater Treatment plant. This design has not been used before in New Zealand and provides an innovative solution to drying sludge, which is created as a by-product of the wastewater treatment process, using the natural climate. Seventy percent of the sludge is evaporated at the site using this method which has allowed cost savings in sludge removal.

New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards Panel Judge Peter Higgs said the award is, "further testament to the outstanding quality and ingenuity that is being evidenced across many areas of the Christchurch rebuild", and demonstrates excellent contribution, "not only to the ongoing rebuild but also the future sustainability of the

This is the second award the Eastern Selwyn Sewerage Scheme has won. Earlier this year, MWH won an engineering excellence award in the IPWEA (Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia) New Zealand Awards in the category for projects over ten million for its design, delivery and development of the scheme.

Murray Washington, Washington Assets Manager at Selwyn District Council commented that, to date, the completed wastewater treatment system has exceeded performance expectations. "The scheme also has the capacity to cope with future population growth in our rapidly expanding district and it provides an environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment system."

Fonterra's Darfield Milk Processing Plant also received an award in the Chemical Bio and Food category at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards.

A Christmas Message from the Malvern & Rolleston News The year has flown by, for us at the News - and we’re sure many others will have experienced the same thing. From cruising into May and June - it seemed to be hard down on the accelerator, as we shot into November and December.

The paper has become bigger and busier - while our office has definitely also become busier, but unfortunately hasn’t got any bigger!

The core team at the News has remained the same, but we have added a new office assistant to our ranks. Office space constraints have seen us consider alternatives, but for now it’s make the best of what we have and adjust things to cope.

As always, the highlight of the year is hearing about, the community in which we live and work. Things that wouldn’t be deemed important on national news, or in big dailies, are the things we love to hear of, and the things that bind communities together. We feel honoured that folk like to share these things with us, and that we can share them with you, our readers.

As in any small enterprise - each day is a learning curve and often things are sent to try us. Change of deliverers, temperamental printers, insufficient staffing levels, along with some errant starlings who wished reside inside the building and not outside it, are just some of the daily issues to be dealt with - generally with a smile, although not always at the time!

We thank our loyal, and much appreciated advertisers for supporting us. It is they who enable us to have enough pages available for the coverage of community events, awards, achievements and business information - and we cannot thank them enough for this support.

As with everything - costs to produce the News, have risen and so without the level of advertising we enjoy, it would be increasingly difficult to cover everything we’re asked to and have it delivered to you. We hope readers will support the advertised trades-people and contractors - they do a great job and very importantly - they’re local!

We’re looking forward to a well-earned break over the Christmas/January period, and while it may seem like a long time to those not in the same industry, it’s a necessary time to recharge and enable us to continue to meet those, often annoying, deadlines - that are all part of the publishing business.

The office will shut on December 19th and re-open at 9am on January 19th.

We sincerely wish everyone a lovely Christmas and New Year - one that is relaxing and refreshing and hopefully spent with friends and family. Don’t eat too much, don’t drink too much (we at the News wouldn’t dream of doing either!!!) - definitely don’t get behind the wheel after drinking, but above all, enjoy Christmas and all it may mean to you.

A Christmas Message from: Selwyn MP Amy Adams: I would like to wish all of the readers of the Malvern News a very happy Christmas and New Year.

I hope that you have the chance to relax with family and friends and that, whether you are staying at home or travelling away over the holiday period, you may be able to enjoy some more settled weather than the chaotic extremes we have been experiencing during Spring.

It has been a busy year and I have enjoyed catching up with some of you when I have been out and about in the electorate at various events. Thank you for your support this year - it is an honour to have the opportunity to represent you in Parliament for another term and I am looking forward to working hard for Selwyn again during 2015.

As always, if you have any concerns or issues that you think I may be able to assist with please do contact my office in Templeton for advice. My office will be closed for the Christmas-New Year period from Tuesday 23rd December and will re-open again on Wednesday 14th January.

Amy Adams A Christmas Message from the CEO Selwyn District Council - David Ward: 2014 has been another extremely busy year for staff and Councillors alike as we continue to respond to the challenges and opportunities that come with Selwyn continuing to be the fastest growing region in New Zealand.

During this year there have been numerous highlights for Council and many of the communities in our District, including: • Completion of a new library for Lincoln in February • Completion of the Eastern Selwyn Sewerage Scheme. This Scheme has subsequently won two national awards for engineering excellence • Continued increase in building consent numbers. This year we issued a total of 2,790 which is a 17% increase on the previous year • Earthquake repairs to Council infrastructure are almost completed • Earthworks have commenced at Foster Recreation Park in Rolleston, signalling the start of the construction of Selwyn’s largest park which will encompass a wide range of activities • Over 250,000 admissions to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre with increased numbers enrolling for ‘Learn to Swim’ during each term during the year Significantly, we also adopted the Rolleston Town Centre Master Plan and our District Development Strategy (Selwyn 2031). As the District continues to grow it is important that we embrace and deliver the facilities identified in both of these plans to meet the needs of our growing population. My staff and I, together with the elected representatives of Selwyn District look forward to working with the community in 2015 and beyond. Enjoy a happy and healthy festive season.

A Christmas Message from the Mayor of Selwyn Kelvin Coe Season’s greetings one and all and a special welcome to all the new arrivals to our district this year.

It’s been another year of extraordinary growth for Selwyn with all the challenges and opportunities that it brings.

Christmas is a time to share friendship and goodwill with our family and friends, and recognise the true treasures in our life as we care and share our values and ideals with others.

We owe so much to so many when we think of all the volunteers who contribute to the wellbeing of our community. Our sports clubs, recreational, cultural activities and Community Care services are all largely serviced by volunteers.

Our new Community Response programme initiated following the earthquakes, is proving very successful and complements our emergency service and Civil Defence volunteers.

Volunteers all contribute so much to the wellbeing of our community and ensuring Selwyn is such a wonderful place to live, work and play.

On behalf of the Councillors and myself, I would like to thank all those who have supported us and Council staff in the many activities undertaken during the year.

After a particularly busy year I hope we can all enjoy the Christmas break, take time to reflect and refresh as we remember family and friends, and consider the good things in life.

It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to work with you and for you this past year.

LENDING OVER 80% Christmas money saving tips: The countdown to Christmas began a long time ago, and hopefully you’ve been putting a little bit of money aside too to alleviate the financial burden of the holiday season. There’s so much we need to purchase, from Christmas presents and fancy food to tanks of petrol and plane tickets home. If you haven’t been putting money aside you might be looking ahead at the coming months with a little trepidation, but perhaps that’s the incentive you need to start saving money for the holidays next year. So if you’re wondering how you’ll stretch the budget this Christmas, why not try some of these money-saving tips.

1. Instead of a proper tree, buy a plastic tree that’ll last more than one Christmas.

2. Do your present shopping in the New Year, when everyone is returning their unwanted gifts.

3. Leave the kids at home when shopping – you might be feeling a little too generous and let them fill the trolley with unnecessary junk.

4. Watch YouTube videos on making your own decorations. There are some great tutorials out there that make it really easy.

5. Make soup on Boxing Day. Instead of throwing out all the left over bones and vegetables from Christmas dinner, put them in a pot and make soup.

6. If you have to fill stockings, don’t be scared of putting something practical in there to take up a little space, like socks or a new pair of underwear.

7. Many supermarkets have schemes that allow you to put money aside regularly for store credit over the Christmas break.

8. Do a second hand Secret Santa… that way you’re only buying the one present, and if it has to be second hand, your budget won’t take a big hit.

9. Ask the kids to make presents. They might want to get you something, and you’ll end up paying for your own present, so get them to make something instead.

10. Ham, turkey and chicken gets more expensive closer to Christmas, so base your lunch around a different meat, like steak or sea food.

Worst money saving advice: While researching our money saving tips we found some bizarre advice that may be a little weird or unusual, but will definitely help you save the pennies! Here are some of the best ones: 1. If you have a dog, collect the hair it sheds during the year. At the end of the year you should have enough hair to knit yourself a jersey. After all, better a sweater from a dog you know and love, than from a sheep you'll never meet.

2. If you're hosting a dinner party and don't have a lot of cash, make alternative after-dinner mints. Just freeze a tube of toothpaste, then cut it open and slice the contents into waferthin pieces to produce your very own treats. They'll look cool and also leave your guests with fresh breath.

3. Use an old calendar. ie 2014 should’ve been able to use a calendar from 2003, 1992, 1986, 1975, 1964, 1958, 1947, 1936, 1930 and 1919.
