Students from Rolleston School are making a mosaic that once completed, will become a permanent feature of the school. It’s a Reggio Emilia inspired project intended to cr eate o r enh an ce an environment filled with natural light, order and beauty. The space encourages collaboration, communication and exploration. Rooms 10 and 8b7 have been working on the mosaic with fantastic results. The school are also making stepping stones and decorative mosaics to go around a tree the children from Room 10 have planted. The students and staff have the green light from Mr Morrall (Rolleston School Principal) to make the school environment more colourful and interesting. Apparently schools can sometimes look really dull, but colour and pictures can have a positive effect on people’s emotions. For the last term students have been putting their heart and soul into designing and creating these mosaics. Hopefully over the years other staff and students or community members will add to the creations and cover the whole

The Selwyn Central Community Board would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We consider our role as Community Board members for the Selwyn Central area as a real privilege and we are always interested to hear your views or concerns. We would also like to take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to all new residents. Please keep safe over the festive period. Season’s greetings one and all and a special welcome to all the new arrivals to our district this year. It’s been another year of extraordinary growth for Selwyn with all the challenges and opportunities that brings, alongside continuing earthquake recovery progress. The festive season however reminds us how fortunate we are as we share the friendship and goodwill of our family and friends, and recognise the true treasures in our life as we care and share our values and ideals with others. We owe so much to so many when we think of all the volunteers who contribute to the wellbeing of our community. In Selwyn our emergency services, our sports clubs,
recreational, cultural activities and Community Care services are all largely serviced by volunteers. You all contribute so much to the wellbeing of our community and ensuring Selwyn is such a wonderful place to live, work and play. On behalf of the Councillors and myself, I would like to thank all those who have supported us and Council staff in the many activities undertaken during the year. After a particularly busy year I hope we can all enjoy the Christmas break, take time to reflect and refresh as we remember family and friends, and reflect on the good things in life. It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to work with you and
for you this past year. Safe journeys, Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year to you all.

MORTGAGE REVIEWS Just like all the other aspects of your life, you should look at reviewing your mortgage regularly to make sure it is working for you. List your goals with it - when would you like it paid off by, are there some renovations you would like to fund? Are you due any bonuses, or other lump sums that you may be able to use to pay off some, if it is on floating? What other options should you consider when fixing? A long term fixed rate is great if you just want to have peace of mind for a few years, but if there is a pay rise pending or expectation of surplus money, then it may pay to leave some floating, so that you can pay it off without penalty. Increasing your repayments may be an option and you will be surprised how much as little as $20 extra a week will reduce the term and interest you pay. On a $250,000 mortgage for example, if you are paying $412 per week for the next twenty years @ 6%, then increasing your repayment to $430 per week would save you $15,812 and knock two years off the term! And that is only an increase of $18 Providing you with quality per week. On a $400,000 advice for Mortgages mortgage an extra $30 per Refinancing & Re-fixing Loans, week could save you a massive Mortgage Protection, $70,000 and knock six years of Life/Trauma, Income Protection & Health Insurance your term. There are many options Phone: 03 3477 205 around mortgages, and I am Mobile: 0275 391 006 here to help. Give me a call ginny@central-insurance.co.nz and let’s see what we can do Disclosure Document Available on Request for you. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas. I am available through the holidays and would be happy to hear from you.

In the Selwyn District alcohol related crashes increase during the Christmas holiday period. While it is an opportunity to enjoy time with friends, family and workmates, it’s hoped that Selwyn residents and visitors will get behind the current safety campaign and make responsible choices to get home after a few drinks. Selwyn’s local hotels, taverns and restaurants already do a great job by offering a courtesy van to their customers. However, anyone planning a barbecue or party for family and friends at their place, should be aware that it is not only essential to look after guests and ensure they have a great
time, but also that they get home safely. Some tips for hosts are: • Offer low and non alcoholic drinks • Have substantial food available with drinks • Help guests organise safe transport options As a further road safety promotion, enter the draw to win a portable gas BBQ and a set of BBQ tools by sharing three best master host tips on: www.selwyn.govt.nz/masterhost or call into any Council Library/ Service centre to complete an entry.

West Melton School buses are sporting brand new signs, thanks to safety concerns raised by a group of students and Selwyn MP Amy Adams. Adams The Year 5 and 6 students from West Melton School had reported to Amy in late October their findings that the majority of cars were speeding past school buses, with the fastest observed travelling at 70 kilometres per hour. “I was shocked by what the stud ents had obs er ved, including the fact that less than 20% of the people surveyed by the children knew the correct speed for passing a school bus
that has stopped to drop off or pick up students,” Amy said. “Something had to be done and the students had come up with some excel lent solutions themsel ves including the recommendation for signage on the back of the school buses to remind drivers of the 20 kilometre per hour speed limit,” she said. Amy had assisted the students with their campaign by writing letters to relevant authorities including Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe, Coe Canterbury District’s Road Policing Manager, Inspector Al Stewart, Stewart and Associate Minister of Education Nikki Kaye. Kaye
“I was very impressed with the students’ concern for their own safety and that of their classmates and I was very happy to help the students make a difference in their local community,” Amy concluded.

Merry Christmas! from Olive, Ngaio & Staff. Enviro Ellesmere is hoping to start a new tradition in Selwyn by holding an outdoor recycled sculpture competition. Entry is free and open to all age groups with individual, group or corporate categories. “The goal of this initiative is to get innovative and creative ideas out in the open. Our area is rich with super creative clever people and an abundance of resources. We want these clever people (that’s you!) to show us how it is possible to repurpose some useful waste items into marvellous contraptions, big and small. It is a great activity for school children, young adults and adults to participate in promoting kiwi-ingenuity on all levels,” said Jade Arnold of Enviro Ellesmere. “If you have ever marvelled over the creations in movies like ‘Water World,’ enjoyed steam-
punk art, fancied yourself as an Entries close: 31st March 2014 inventor or had the thought Judging: April 2014. ‘hmmmm’, I am sure there is something I could do with that For more information, piece of scrap, then this event is competition rules or to register for you. Show us what ideas interest in the event: you have had,” Jade added! Email: Sculptures can be made of enviroellesmere@gmail.com anything or any material to be recycled and prizes will be awarded for artistic merit, ingenuity and resourcefulness. The sculpture must either ‘do’ something (i.e. move in the wind) or perform a function of some kind (i.e. be a chair). There are exciting prizes and sculptures will be publicly exhibited in April/May 2014. Winning sculptures are intended to be displayed in communal areas. Enviro Ellesmere is keen to get this competition going so that it might become a yearly event for Ellesmere and an ongoing attraction to the area.

Every December I find it hard to believe that it has been a whole year since I wrote my last Christmas message. It has been a busy and exciting year in Selwyn with the region earning the title of the fastest growing district in the country.
All around the district, the recovery from the Canterbury earthquakes is gathering pace, with many homes repaired and businesses re-established in new premises. We have had some setbacks in the form of severe weather that I
know has caused a lot of damage to properties. However, I know that our communities have once again demonstrated their resilience and rallied around to help with the clean-up and repairs. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has offered me support and encouragement this year. I try to attend as many local events as I can, whether it is judging at a local A & P show, opening a new building or attending a volunteer fire brigade jubilee and I really appreciate the chance to meet with you and hear your views. I find it especially heartening to visit our local schools and be greeted by positive and enthusiastic faces of children and young people who are genuinely interested in local affairs. I am very proud to be yo u r r ep r es en tati ve i n Parliament and I look forward to continuing to work hard for you next year. I have been a strong advocate of reduced speed limits around our rural schools and was very pleased when the 40km speed trial that I worked hard to have implemented was extended

earlier this year. More recently I have been advocating on behalf of West Melton students to have measures introduced to promote children’s safety, when boarding and disembarking from school buses. As the Minister responsible for the roll-out of the Government’s Ultra-fast Broadband, I have been pleased to see my local communities of Rolleston, Lincoln and Halswell start to enjoy the benefits of cable. The G o vernmen t’s Rur al Broadband initiative (RBI) is also starting to make a big difference in Selwyn, with new cell sites at Bankside and Glentunnel switched on this year, providing improved mobile coverage and broadband options for residents and visitors to the area. More new towers are planned for the Selwyn District over the next three years, including at West Melton and Castle Hill and other sites (at Darfield, Leeston, Springfield and Round Top) will be upgraded under the RBI. This year we have also announced new Government funding for many important infrastructure projects around S e l w yn i n c l u d i n g th e
d evel op m en t of a n ew agricultural research and development hub at Lincoln, new primary and high schools for Rolleston and an upgrade for Rolleston Prison. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Life does get so hectic that I hope you get the chance to slow down and enjoy some time with friends and family over the holiday period. I’m looking forward to taking a break and spending time with my family before getting back to work in January. My office will be closed from 23rd December and will re-open again on the 13th of January.

The last twelve months have just flown by and once again we, at the News, wish our readers a very Merry Christmas, a safe, festive New Year and a welcome respite from work commitments, school lunches and sports’ timetables! Competition in business is healthy, so they say, and we would be the first to admit we wondered how the changes made to the local community newspaper scene would affect us. Well we can tell you how it affected us - it’s made us even busier! It’s fantastic to have a thriving business in a thriving, caring community, with wonderful readers who share their stories with us. The changing face of Selwyn is wonderful too - it brings with it a vibrancy that quite a number of rural locations would trade anything for. Newcomers to the area, choose Selwyn as their preferred place to live and this all adds to the community spirit that is definitely alive and well, around us. Meeting newspaper deadlines is always challenging and we strive hard to get the News out reliably each time. There has been the odd hiccup or two in the form of winds, power outages and machinery malfunctions (we print on-site each time) that have caused a few stresses, but our printer supplier (Fuji Xerox) has helped in some instances and a network of friends and family have assisted with delivery, when that has been necessary. We love to be able to write about the successes, occasional frustrations, businesses and local events that make Selwyn our community. Business co-owners Jan Crossley and Jan Thomas, plus longtime and very efficient staff member, Sarah Blackburn as well as Lois Haskett, who is a godsend for taking care of the printing and dispatching process, have now been joined by Nicky Dance. In the meantime we wish each and every one of you a wonderful Christmas and New Year and as we say every year - “of course we won’t allow a drop of alcohol to pass our lips!!!”

With the coming holiday period it is timely to remind everyone to keep themselves, their family and their property safe. This is the time of year for work Christmas parties, end of work drinks or those impromptu occasions when you catch up with old friends. Remember to enjo y you rs elf , bu t b e responsible. Drink driving is a killer. The deaths on our roads due to driving while intoxicated are tragic, but avoidable. Speed is another well publicised cause of deaths and injuries on our roads. However let's not dwell on the negative aspects. Two things we should be highlighting are patience and keeping focussed. Those two things will go a long way to keeping you, your family and your community safe on the roads this holiday season.
With many families away over this time it's important to take care of the basics to keep your property safe. Make sure you arrange for your mail and paper to be collected or held for you. Speak with your neighbours and let them know you’re going to be away and ask them to keep an eye on things. Of note: burglars tend to gain access to houses at the rear of the property, which is usually less visible. Check your sensor lights to make sure that they are working and that the sensors cover the desired area. Ask your neighbours to have a walk around your house while you're away to make sure it's secure. If you’re not going away, look after your neighbourhood. Take note of unfamiliar vehicles or people. Shape up and keep fit while staying cool over summer by joining an aquafitness class at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. “Aquafitness classes are a great way to get fit in a supportive environment while having fun at the same time,” said Amanda Taylor, Taylor Aquafitness Instructor at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. “Exercising in water is ideal as it puts far less pressure on muscles and joints than other cardio activities. It’s also a great form of exercise in summer when it is too hot outside for other types of exercise,” she added. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre offers three types of Aquafitness classes: High Energy Water
Workout, Aquafit for life and Hydrotone. Aquafit for life provides a lower impact workout which is particularly suited to people looking to ease back into exercise. The class increases general mobility and flexibility as well as cardiovascular fitness. It is a mid-pace session that is lots of fun and has activities for all levels. High Energy Water Workout is designed for people wanting anything from an extra push to a 'full on' workout. It is a high intensity cardio and endurance session including exercises to sculpt and tone muscles. Hydrotone classes are held in the hydrotherapy pool which is

The class is particularly beneficial for those with joint mobility, limited flexibility, arthritis and people recovering from an injury or surgery. “I f you’ ve n ever tr i ed Aquafitness before, now is a great time to give it a go,” commented Amanda. “You don’t need to sign up for a series of classes, you can just turn up and have a go at a class you’re interested in.”

Seventeen community events have recently been granted funding by Selwyn District Council through its new Events’ Fund. The fund was advertised for the first time in September and supports events held in Selwyn which are open to the public; attract local, regional and international visitors; and benefit and promote the district. A wide range of events received funding, including Darfield’s Country Christmas in the Park, the Hororata Highland Games, Rolleston Community Fireworks’ Night, Children’s Day, the Selwyn Half Marathon, the New Zealand Young Farm ers’ Competition, the L incoln University Dairy Farm Open Day and Earth Hour events. “As our population grows there are an increasing number of events happening in Selwyn which help make our district a
great place to live in and attract people to come and visit,” said the Counci l’s Community Services Manager, L esley Symington. “Events are often organised by community organisations and the Council is pleased to be able to support their work through the Events Fund,” she added. $17,370 remains in the Events Fund and this funding will be readvertised in early 2014. Events that have received funding are: • Craft Chic Market $200 • Darfield Country Xmas in the Park $1,440 • Enviro Ellesmere Themes Expose $1,000 • Hororata Highland Games $5,000 • Lake Crichton Triathlon and Duathlon $2,000 • Earth Hour Barn Dance $400 • Earth Hour Kim Hill
Env iron me nt Cante rbu ry recently released the fourth and fifth in a series of earthquake fault reports on different districts of the Canterbury region. Env iron me nt Cante rbu ry Commissioner Donald Couch s a id t he Se lwyn an d Waimakariri districts are
priority locations for fault survey. “These areas have experienced unprecedented growth since the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes,” he said. “It is therefore important that we understand the risk profile.” Most of the faults and folds identified on the ground surface in the two districts are in rural or very sparsely populated areas, and most of the faults have a relatively long average time between fault movements; in the order of several thousand years. The report, by GNS Science, provides information on the locations and character of active geological faults and folds throughout the Selwyn and Waimakariri districts. The faults are mapped at a regional scale. The mapping identifies areas where narrow zones of very intense earthquake deformation could h a ppe n , wit h grou n d fracturing along the fault and permanent ground offsets on either side of the fault (uplift and subs idence and/or horizontal movement along the faultline). The Christmas holidays are a great time to get away, but owning a pet can make trips a little more difficult to organise. For those who want to take their pet away with them on holiday over summer, below are some tips to make sure much loved animals have a fun holiday, too! PetPet-friendly accommodation Accommodation that welcomes furry family members can be hard to find. There’s now an iPhone and Android App to help find those that do, quickly and easily. ‘Purina Pet Places NZ’ helps with the search for pet-friendly accommodation and there’s also a website called ‘Pets can come too’ that only lists accommodation where pets are welcome. When choosing a holiday bach, go for one that’s fully fenced, with a nice shady tree for a pet to rest under if the household is heading out for a swim. G ett in g u s e d to n e w surroundings Even though pets (especially dogs) LOVE being taken on the family holiday, it can be a bit disconcerting for them going to new surroundings. To help make them feel comfortable, take a favourite toy or blanket from home that will have familiar smells on it a dog’s own bed or a cat’s favourite scratch post will work well. Also try not to leave a pet a lone a t th e h olida y accommodation for too long it may be stressful for them to be left in an unfamiliar place for long stretches. Instead, take them for walks and spend time together so they feel safe.
Road trips Some pets love car rides others don’t feel quite so enthusiastic about it. For a pet that’s one of the latter, there are a couple of things to do to relax them before the trip. Take a dog for a big walk and play in the park before the roady begins - this will mean they’re well exercised and relaxed. If the trip is more than an hour or two, make some quick stops so doggies can get a burst of fresh air and go to the toilet if they need. Pack up a water bottle and bowl, and if the dog is going to be in the back of a vehicle, take their bed or a familiar blanket to make the trip more comfortable. Cats will need to be kept in their travel carrier for car rides. If the cat isn’t too used to a travel carrier, have them spend some time in it before the trip, so they’re used to the space and it doesn’t come as too much of a shock. A good way is to the have carrier open in your cat’s favourite spot in the house with their bedding in it to allow them to get used to it on their terms. Ensure that the car is kept well ventilated with open windows or air conditioning. Don’t ever leave pets alone in a stationary car on a hot day they will overheat very quickly. Collar with contact details Keep an eye on pets in unfamiliar surroundings. It’s probably safest to keep cats indoors, and try to find a fully fenced bach to stay at for the dog. However, it’s wise to be prepared for the possibility of a pet getting lost. Fit pets with a

collar that has full contact details on it (preferably a mobile number that will be with owners while away) - make sure pets are microchipped before the trip. To beach, or not to beach? Lots of Kiwi holidays are enjoyed around beaches, but each beach has different rules when it comes to allowing dogs. Most do allow dogs on the beach off leash for a period in the morning, and a period in the evening - outside the peak hours of bustling beach goers. Lots of parks around New Zealand are leash-free all the time, check the Purina Pet Places app, or the local council website for confirmation of this. Just in case Deciding to take a pet on holiday can be very rewarding for both the pet and the whole family. However, it is also important to know where the local Veterinary Clinic is and an after hours number to call just in case of an emergency with a pet. Research the closest one to the holiday destination before arriving. FREE PET CARE HELP LINE Purina New Zealand offers a free advice service at 0800 PET VIP (0800 738 847). A dedicated team of pet care experts, including veterinary n ur ses a nd an ima l behaviourists, are available to offer advice and support on a wide range of pet care questions, from anxiety and behaviour, to health and n ut rition , training a n d socialisation, as well as information about Purina products.

Readers who participated in the Selwyn District Council Drive Phone Free Survey were entered into a draw to win a $100 MTA Voucher. The survey was run as part of a campaign to remind motorists of the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone. “It was pleasing to see so many people taking an interest in this aspect of driver distraction. The varied tips being shared by local drivers about managing the phone while driving was definitely encouraging,” said Ngaire Tinning, Tinning Selwyn District Road Safety Co-ordinator. The winner of the MTA Voucher was Susan Summerfield of West Melton and Ngaire thanks all those who took part.
DRIVING PHONE FREE IS SAFEST A survey of Selwyn residents has revealed that many drivers are still using mobile phones. 97% of the 359 residents who completed the Selwyn District Road Safety Drive phone free survey reported that they had seen people using mobile phones when stopped in traffic, for example at traffic lights. “Under changes to legislation in 2009 using a phone while you are driving or when you are at traffic lights is illegal,” said Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning. “Using a phone when you have stopped at the lights is a bad idea as many drivers are tempted to continue to finish their conversation or texting as they drive off.” The survey was carried out as part of a wider Selwyn District Council campaign to encourage motorists to drive phone free by not using mobile or hands free phones so that they were focussed on driving when in a car. While the survey results indicated this was an area where drivers can improve, many people who took part in the survey reported they took specific actions to ensure they were not distracted by a phone while driving. 40% of drivers let a passenger take a phone call if it rang when they were driving, and 27% of drivers usually let their phone go to voicemail. 6% of drivers also turned their phone off, put it on silent or put it out of reach.

DID YOU KNOW? If you have a mains pressure hot water cylinder, it is recommended by the manufacturers that the sacrificial anode is checked every 10 years, & replaced if necessary. This will greatly increase the life of your cylinder.
