The new Selwyn Youth Council is looking forward to their role of engaging with young people and representing their views. “We’re really excited about the formation of the Youth Council and we want to make sure that young people’s views are heard in our district,” commented Youth Council Chairperson Tristan Misselbrook. 18% of Selwyn’s population are between 12 and 24 years. Selwyn’s first Youth Council was formed following a District Youth Forum in May at which attendees voted unanimously to support its establishment The Youth Council is made up of eleven young people aged between fourteen and twenty four who live in Selwyn, and two youth worker representatives. The Youth Council members are: Michael Anderson (Lincoln High School); Coun ci llo r S am Broughton (Youth worker representative); Rafael Clarke (Lincoln High School); Aaron Donaldson (Ellesmere College);

The Youth Council have already received $32,000 from the Ministry of Youth Development to stage a two day event for young people next year which will include a ‘have a go’ day with a carnival and market, a battle of the bands, a concert featuring local talent and a youth forum. Tristan added that the Youth Council are also planning to hold a series of conversation cafes in Selwyn towns and will also visit local secondary schools to explain the role of the Youth Council. “The conversation cafés are a way for us to talk to other young people in a café style setting which is a relaxed an d friend ly environment about what issues and projects they think should be priorities. That will help us to identify what projects we want to work on, or advocate for, on behalf of young people,” he said. The Youth Council will meet monthly and its members will be appointed annually through an application process. Youth Council members will work with the Council to provide a youth perspective on a range of issues and will develop submissions on matters of interest to young people.

Penelope Sole, Sole is a personal trainer at Lincoln University Recreation Centre, and with help from the Rolleston Scout Group is putting together a fifteen kilometre Women’s Relay Event. The event to be held in Rolleston on October 13th, will start and finish at the Rolleston Reserve, and for those not wishing to participate there will be plen ty of oth er entertainment. Live music, bouncy castles, hot coffee, face painting and a barbecue will all be available for friends and families of the walkers/runners. The non-competitive relay encourages first-time runners, as well as more experienced participants, by providing three
courses to choose from, and on mostly flat land. A large number of spot prizes will be awarded on the day, regardless of where a participant finishes in the field. “We have received generous donations for our spot prizes from local businesses, which is much appreciated and will ensure the day is a great success,” said Penelope. A donation from the funds raised on the day will be given to the Rolleston Scout Group to assist them with getting to their ten day Scout Jamboree in Auckland, at the end of the year. A total of $20,000 is needed to ensure that the group get there. Entry fees for the event provide
participants with a low-cost sporting challenge, plus an enjoyable day out for family and friends, all while raising crucial funds for the Rolleston Scout Group. The race starts at 9:30am, but participants need to first register, and then attend the safety briefing at 9:00am. “I am so excited to be a part of this event. We have had f an tas ti c suppo r t an d involvement with raising money so far, and I know it’s going to be a great day,” concluded Penelope. http:// solefitwomensrelay2013.word press.com/ for info and registrations.
Right here in Rolleston - we’re your local! Eleven years ago, friends Penny Zino and Alison Meyer had a vision of introducing the beauty and peace of the Hawarden and Waikari district, the district they have lived and brought up their families in, to the wider community. It was also an opportunity for visitors to enjoy Flaxmere, a ‘Garden of National Significance’. Hence the idea was born to exhibit sculptures in the garden gallery of Flaxmere, with paintings on display in an old barn, converted into a gallery, with the addition of suitable lighting. The pair both wanted the exhibition to have a charity aspect and their chosen charities were the Cancer Society and Amuri St John. These remain their charities of choice today. Alison and Penny have had the satisfaction of exposing the public to new and upcoming artists, as well as those more established ones. As ‘Art in a Garden’ enters its tenth year, two new faces have joined the management of the exhibition and brought with them new and innovative ideas; now involved are Pip Miller (Alison's daughter) and Rachael Zino (Penny's daughter-in-law). Café style food and gourmet picnic lunchboxes are available from the garden cottage, to add to the enjoyment of the accompanying music and locally grown wines. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a hot coffee or tea, relax with friends and walk through the garden before

WWW.LIVE2RIDE.CO.NZ Selwyn District Council has laun ched a n ew pub li c education campaign and motorcycle skills coaching programme to help reduce motorcycle crashes in the district. Riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous than driving a car. In New Zealand, the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is twenty times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver. From 2008 - 2012, there were sixty five motorcycle crashes in Selwyn District resulting in four fatalities, thirty four serious injuries, thirty one minor injuries and seven non-injury crashes. Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning commented that the number of motorcycle crashes is extremely concerning and the Council has
launched the ‘Live to Ride’ campaign to try to reduce the number and severity of them in Selwyn. “Live to Ride aims to make motorists more aware of motorcylists on our roads and also encourage riders to increase their skills and reduce their chances of being involved in a crash,” Ngaire said. As part of Live to Ride the Council is offering subsidised half and full day motorcycle skills coaching. The courses offer motorcyclists the chance to refresh their skills, as well as learn and practice new techniques. The courses are delivered by NZTA qualified trainers and include off and on road training to develop braking, handling and safe driving skills. The half day course costs $20, while the full
day advanced course is $50. The Council is offering all riders that complete the courses between September 2013 and March 2014 entry into a prize draw for a $300 protective motorcycle clothing voucher. A Live to Ride motorcycle information flyer has been developed for riders and will be distributed at events in Selwyn, as well as from Council offices and libraries. Motorcyclists who request a copy of the Live to Ride information flyer on line will also go into a draw to win one of two $40 MTA Vouchers. Motorcyclists who want to register for the courses can do so by visiting: www.live2ride.co.nz or phoning 03 347 2901. Places are limited, so early registration is advised. We are now entering an increasing interest rate cycle so if you are still riding the low floating rate, by now you should be looking at fixing your loan. If you haven’t done so already I will be happy to discuss the best options with you. The best scenario could be to spread your loan over a couple of terms which may coincide with expected income levels, bonuses or sale of another property. If you are looking to buy a property, here are a couple of examples to give you an idea of deposit required and repayments: Property 1: 1 $450,000. Deposit required under new rules $90,000. (20%) Repayments on $360,000 are $552 per week @ 7% - approx. Five year rate over thirty years Property 2: $350,000. Deposit required $70,000 Repayments on $280,000 are $429 per week @ 7% - approx. Five year rate over thirty years Deposits can be raised in a variety of ways - Kiwisaver, equity in a family home, gifting or hard saving. Once in your home, even an extra $20 per week towards your mortgage can make a huge hole in the interest you pay. On Property 2, that would save you $61,149 in interest payments and reduce the time from 30 to 26 years!

Student Exchange Australia New Zealand has just announced that sixteen year old Lincoln High School student, Cassidy Toni Ngahungahu has won the 2013 Fay Wilmerding Indigenous Scholarship Award. Cassidy will depart in March 2014 for a ten month stay in Japan, on a scholarship valued at $13,500, which is fully funded by Student Exchange. The award was presented to Cassidy on Monday, September 16th by Suzan Kuru, Kuru Student Exchange’s Area Representative and Stephen Rout, Rout Principal of Lincoln High School. Nick Lorentzen, National Director of Student Exchange Australia New Zealand commented, “Cassidy is to be congratulated on winning our Indigenous Scholarship. The scholarship always attracts numerous entries from across Australia and New Zealand, but Cassidy stood out. We saw her as someone who will use her exchange experience not only for her personal development but also for the benefit of her community. We know she will gain and give back from her experience in Japan.” Cassidy’s family originates from the Tainui tribe and she is active in learning the Maori language and traditions. She has spent many weekends with her grandparents learning about Maori legends and culture, and has a close bond with her father and two sisters. Cassidy is an active member of her community where she has helped organise Relay for Life and National Mudslide Day for Scouting NZ. She also actively participates in the local Venturer Scout group.
For Cassidy, Japan has always been on the radar. “Since learning the Japanese language, begun at the age of thirteen, I have developed a passion for understanding that country’s culture and language. I had to wait three years until I could apply for an exchange programme. Japan was my priority because I completely fell in love with the culture, the language and its close similarities to the Maori lifestyle and I have made many close Japanese friends throughout my years at high school,” Cassidy added. “I expect to broaden my mind and change myself as a person, and to become more independent, and self-confident.”
On her return to New Zealand, Cassidy hopes to combine her; “Personal Maori lifestyle with the Japanese lifestyle and, with my increased confidence and awareness from the trip, contribute more to my local community.” While Cassidy’s application was outstanding and beat a competitive field of entries from around Australia and New Zealand, it was no mean feat to come out top in the face of some fierce competition. Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd offers twelve scholarships each year. These include five Language Scholarships, two International Affairs Scholarships, two Indigenous Scholarships, and three Digital Video Scholarships.

WINTER TOURNAMENT
Facing: Courtney Phillips (Goal Defence) & Emma Bryce (Centre). Thirty teams contested the Year 7 and 8 Canterbury Winter Netball Tournament, and Rolleston School gained a very creditable second placing overall. The School played four pool games, three of which they won, before progressing to the next stage, the quarter and semi finals. Finishing with a five all draw in the semis meant extra time and the players stayed on the court until one team could claim a two point advantage. After approximately five minutes of extra time, Rolleston emerged the winner with a score of 8 to 6. Rolleston School then played in the final against Hillview Christian School, but unfortunately they were a tough team to beat and Rolleston lost 10-3. The team, consisting of Katie Bryce, Bryce Courtney Phillips, Phillips Micayla Roberts, Roberts Ashleigh Hall, Hall Janaya Clark, Clark Emma Bryce, Bryce Holly Martin and Emily Higham, Higham all had a great day and played some amazing netball.

SPELLATHON
RED CROSS FUNDING
Recently the Rolleston School PTA organised a ‘Spellathon’ for the students of Rolleston School. Students were given a challenging list of words to achieve over two weeks before testing. We had to take the list home and learn them, we also got sponsors for each word we got right. Over $18,000 was raised by our amazing spellers! The first class from each team to get their spelling pack back to the office, won a fish and chip lunch. Christepher Scotson & Sarah Gillespie
Red Cross recently gifted funding to Rolleston School, and after much discussion Team Totara decided it should be used to give the children an artistic experience. Following being in the audience at a play pupils were also entertained by a story teller at school, who worked with the children to create their own story. Ivy - Saviour of the Dinosaur On Tuesday 3rd September we went to Hornby High School to see a play called ‘Ivy, Saviour of the Dinosaur’. It was a play about dinosaurs and scientists. All of team Totara went along. We enjoyed it so much, we all clapped and waved. After we got on the bus to go back to school we chatted all about it. By Sabrina, Molly and Georgia. The Wonderful Story Teller On Wednesday, the wonderful storyteller Tanya Batt kindly came to Rolleston School to share her stories with us. After she had shared her story, she picked Hunter to make his own story and we had to draw it, making our own special book in the process. Tanya Batt could do lots of different voices - like spooky, scary and many others. We loved having her entertain us! By Tyrone and Abigail
ADOPT A SCHOOL INITIATIVE Twenty five Canterbury schools have the opportunity to buddy up with one or two players in the Canterbury squad this ITM Cup season, under the Canterbury Rugby Football Union’s new ‘Adopt a School’ initiative. All primary and intermediate schools with a rugby team registered through the CRFU were invited to apply for the programme, and of those schools 25 have been selected - Rolleston School was one of them. Each school in the programme has various R u g b y o p p o r tu n i t i es throughout the season - red and black day competitions, meeting the players etc etc. Five chosen schools can attend each home game and in a rugby related challenge held at half time have the opportunity of winning $1000 for their school, donated by SBS Bank. On Saturday September 14th, Rolleston School was one of those attending, they took part in their challenge and won the $1000! This will be presented to the school at an assembly, by a representative of SBS on September 27th.

An elderly man was stopped by the police around 2am and was asked where he was going at that time of night. The man replied, "I'm on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late." The officer then asked, "Really? Who's giving that lecture at this time of night?" The man replied, "That would be my wife."
