Three students from Lincoln High School have recently been selected for South Island Volleyball teams.

Mackenzie Greaves (Year 11) and Alice Quinlivan (Year 12), have gained selection for the South Island Under-17 Volleyball team.

This team will compete at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships in July. This is essentially the Australian state championships, so the South Island team will be playing against the likes of NSW and Queensland teams.

Christine Chambers has been selected in the South Island Und er - 19 t eam t hat recently competed in the Trans-Tasman Quadrangular tournament in Tauranga. The South Island Team played against the North Island, New South Wales and Queensland Under-19 sides in a mini tournament.

“All three girls started playing volleyball at the end of 2012 and have done well to get this far in a relatively short space of time,” comm ented Mi kael e Tuu’u Head of the Physical Educat ion and Healt h Departments at Lincoln High School.

Rolleston Railway Station could soon be getting a makeover, as a plan to beautify the train station by the Selwyn Central Community Board has received community support.

The Board held a conversation café on Thursday, May 22nd which invited the community to share their ideas about how the station could be transformed into a welcoming facility for visitors, one which local residents can be proud of.

Around thirty people attended the café event and Selwyn Central Community Board Chair Diane Chesmar said, “the session was extremely positive and a number of people have indicated they want to volunteer their time to help progress the project.”

The first station at Rolleston was constructed in 1866, and 2016 will mark the 150th anniversary of a station at the site. Rolleston railway station is on one of the oldest provincial railway lines in New Zealand.

Since the Kirwee Players Inc was founded in 1976 they have unfailingly continued to entertain Selwyn-ites, while having a lot of fun doing so.

When this year’s production op en s on A u gu st 8t h entertainment and fun will once again take to the stage. In 2014 Kirwee Players present ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’, in the warm, well appointed, Kirwee Community Hall.

From the book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson, with Music and Lyrics by Carol Hall, Hall the Kirwee players version will be directed by Mabel Knight with Diane Coad once again as musical director. Well known drama teacher, Amanda Hopkins wi l l b e i n c h a r g e o f choreography, and tickets are on sale now.

This production has attracted the biggest cast ever - with forty Players set to take to the stage almost half of these are new, exciting talent to the growing Selwyn district. This new talent brings with it a number of local high school students, which bodes well for the future of Kirwee Players.

Lead parts, all of whom are described as having ‘fantastic soulful voices, which are sure to blow people away’, are taken by Cee Cee James (as Mona), Russell Moffat (Sheriff Dodd), Karen Nelson Cummins (Jewel), Edward Stott (Melvin P. Thorpe), and Don Gillanders (Bandsman).

This hilarious show, with a risqué component (PG - Parental Guidance Recommended) is sure to keep the audience laughing and gob smacked at the same

time! The show is an enormous task for the choreographer, with many dance numbers, even some solo male line dance numbers!

Set in the 1850’s, at the Chicken Ranch (so named because, during the D epressi on, customers were allowed to pay with poultry!), one of the better ‘pleasure places’ in all of Texas, this is a frothy, funny and rather bawdry musical with a delightful Country and Western score. Of co ur s e t h ere ar e m or al crusaders, country Sheriffs and prostitutes aplenty - all adding to the entertainment and laughter.

This show definitely shouldn’t be missed and tickets are likely to sell fast.

June 7th, saw over thirty Rolleston Cubs, plus their leaders and helpers, head to Lake Lyndon Lodge for a one night camp. The weather was unseasonably warm, enabling the Cubs to embark on many outdoor activities.

Rolleston Primary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) have been busy organising another event which not only engages the students, but also raises funds for projects around the School.

Rolleston School have been staging a ‘Mathathon’ to involve students and the School community in a fun and educational fundraising event.

Students were able to choose from a range of problems involving: number and shape; addition and subtraction; along with tricky multiplication and division. Students then had a few weeks to work on their selected problems and get sponsorship. Pupils were tested and the results marked on their forms. These were taken home to share their achievement with parents and family. Students now have a few weeks to collect in the sponsorship money.

Amanda Barrett teacher at Rolleston School commented, “ I was really pleased with the results. It was great to see the children challenge themselves by attempting the higher levels and achieving.”

Rolleston School held a similar fundraiser last year

(a ‘Spellathon’) and this successful fundraiser raised over $18,000 for the school.

The PTA are hoping for similar success from the ‘Mathathon’ and, if it is as successful, have already decided to donate some of the money towards: Jump Jam teams, the media unit camera, Road Patrol Education Outside the Classroom day, new iPads and much more.

PROPERTY PRICES Will house prices rise or fall? How rapidly will interest rates rise? I now find myself frequently addressing these questions.

My two cents worth…

Around 2001 a supersonic housing boom hit Sydney. It was just after the Olympics. Property prices suddenly started to skyrocket! No one wanted to miss the yummy gravy train.

Everyone hopped on board. One thing led to another that led to a Mexican wave. By around 2005 house prices had pretty much doubled around Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, as far as I can remember!

Then followed (as usually do) talks of doom and gloom. Prices are unsustainable, they said. Totally unaffordable for the new generation, they said. Prices will fall - wait and watch, they said. Yeah right I said!

Fast-forward a decade. 2012 saw yet another housing boom hit Sydney. Even Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty (tax) cant stop Australians from digging deep! As we speak, property prices are still running hot around Sydney, embarrassing the ‘naysayers’ yet again!

Time flies fast! Before you know it, it ‘will’ be 2024. New suburbs, new motorways, new tunnels, new train networks, new shopping malls, new apartment blocks, new skyscrapers, all together will look to spread cities further out, further wide.

Did I mention population increase?

What would this mean for property prices? Would you rather look back in 2024 and wish you had bought at 2014 prices?

Moral of the Story - avoid ‘naysayers’ and in moments of doubt, just revisit history. Here’s an activity to seal the deal...

Approach a senior citizen and ask him or her a simple question: “What was the average house price around your suburb forty years ago (1974), thirty years ago (1984), twenty years ago (1994), ten years ago (2004)?”

Two women were out for a Saturday stroll. One had a Doberman and the other, a Chihuahua. As they walked down the street, the one with the Doberman Said to her friend, "Let's go over to that bar for

The lady with the Chihuahua said, "We can't go in there. We've got dogs with us." The one with the Doberman said, "Just watch, and do as I do." They walked over to the bar and the one with the Doberman put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk in.

The bouncer at the door said, "Sorry, lady, no pets allowed."

The woman with the Doberman said, "You don't understand.

This is my guide dog."

The bouncer said, "A Doberman?" The woman said, "Yes, they're using them now. They're very good."

The bouncer said, "OK, come on in."

The lady with the Chihuahua thought that convincing him that a Chihuahua was a guide dog may be a bit more difficult, but thought, "What the heck," so she put on her dark glasses and started to walk in. Once again the bouncer said, "Sorry, lady, no pets allowed."

The woman said, "You don't understand. This is my guide dog" The bouncer said, "A Chihuahua?"
