Lisa Bowater and Zita Bezuidenhout, co-ordinators of Bezuidenhout the Selwyn Breast Cancer Support Group recently organised a very pink breakfast fundraiser. Held at The Rock restaurant in Rolleston on May 17th, the event was well attended with eighty three people enjoying some tasty food and fun entertainment.

Attendees had a great time, with the delicious brunch supplied by The Rock (who donated five dollars from every meal and one dollar from every drink purchased, to the cause). There were raffles and several auctions, as well as a quiz (which culminated in a nail biting finish) and prizes for best dressed and best hair/head dress.

In total the breakfast raised $1400 for NZ Breast Cancer Foundation and $100 for the Breast Cancer Support group that the organisers are affiliated to. Chris and Zita credit the appreciated support from businesses around Rolleston

and Lincoln for much of their success. With everyone having such a great time they hope to repeat the event next year.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams believes that the new Rolleston Christian School will be a welcome addition to the schooling network in Selwyn. After attending the official opening of the school by her colleague, Education Minister Hekia Parata on May 1st, Amy commented that, “the fact that Selwyn now has its own Christian School is another example of our region coming of age as a significant population centre.”

Rolleston Christian School currently has capacity for 150 students and this will increase to 300 under stage two of the school’s development.

Expanding further, Amy said that, “Selwyn families seeking a Christian-based education for their children will be pleased to have the option of a local school, without having to travel further afield, as has been the case previously.”

Amy felt that the new Rolleston Christian School will help take

some pressure off the growing rolls at Rolleston’s existing schools, as will the three additional schools that are scheduled to open in the area within the next two years.

It is ‘Hurrahs’ all round as members of the Rolleston Men’s Shed celebrate the issuing of consent for their new building.

Wasting no time, they called for all hands on deck to ensure the boxing was in place, ready to pour the foundation on May 27th.

Chairman of Trustees Neil Bennett extended thanks and gratitude to all the local businesses who have supported

the group - it has been much appreciated.

“Many have supplied materials or services at no cost,” Neil said. “Without this assistance we could not have succeeded with this project.”

“We have also had assistance from key SDC staff who have bent over backwards to get us to this stage, with some giving us assistance on-site as well.”

“To all those who have donated tools and material for our workshop, along with batteries for the Battery Drive, a big thank you,” Neil added. “We are

Highgate Hair is a new high end salon in Rolleston August 2015 will see the fourth biennial Oxford Wearable Arts staged - with each preceding one gaining in popularity.

An Oxford Area School PTA initiative, the event is run by an incredibly dedicated subcommittee who undertake the total organisation. Funds raised go toward resources for the school and this year the focus is on purchasing and building a large Agility Course, along with recreational equipment for the senior school.

The show has grown each year with the 2013 event attracting a massive a sixty entries (40 student entries and 20 adult ones). Entries come from Christchurch and surrounding districts, while the Show’s audiences hail from as far away as Ashburton.

“We are encouraging local schools to get involved,” said Jane Anderson of Oxford’s Wearable Arts Committee.

The evening is held in the Oxford Area School hall, primarily because it can seat 400 people. Entries are judged by a panel of three and those attending can enjoy high quality entertainment, as well as professional lighting and sound.

This year’s student categories are: Years 1-6 Back to the Future, Years 7-13 Back to the Future or Open (they are free to choose a title and materials used).

Adult categories are: Open, Avant Garde and All Things Bright and Beautiful.

Students are judged in their age groups and prizes awarded for first, second and third.

Adults are judged within their categories with cash prizes or weekend packages.

From all the category winners a Supreme Student and Adult are chosen. Along with a trophy these successful winners will also receive flights and tickets to attend the World of Wearable Arts in Wellington thanks to Oxford Farmers Market.

“I always encourage prospective entrants to ‘give it a go’,” Jane added, “it’s a great experience in a lovely friendly atmosphere and everyone participating in past shows has enjoyed themselves enormously,” she concluded.

Results from an independent clinical trial of iNdream3 have proved its efficacy as a sleep promoting ingredient. iNdream3 is made from melatonin-rich milk collected in the hours of darkness, when cows naturally produce increased concentrations of melatonin in their milk.

“We’ve been developing this product for several years and this clinical trial is a major milestone in proving the ability of iNdream3 to improve sleep,” said Dr Simon Causer, Causer Synlait’s Research and Development Manager. “iNdream3 leverages melatonin in its natural form. Melatonin in almost all other products are synthetically produced or extracted from source materials with lower levels of melatonin.”

Melatonin is a sleep-promoting hormone that plays a key role in helping humans to regulate their

day/night cycle. iNdream3 has initially been sold in Korea by a Synlait customer since January 2015. Their product, Sleepiz, is sold as a powder in a sachet that consumers reconstitute as a drink.

The clinical trial, conducted by Otago University’s WellSleep Centre, found that iNdream3 reduces the time to onset of sleep, increases stage N3 sleep time (the deepest phase of sleep) and reduces daytime dysfunction. Daytime dysfunctions include sleepiness, fatigue, impaired memory and poor concentration. “iNdream3 is an exciting opportunity. It demonstrates our capability as a nutritional business to create and add value for the long term,” said Dr John Penno, Penno Synlait’s Managing Director.

“Call me now to find out what your home is worth on today's market” The weather for the Primary Sports Canterbury Duathlon, held at Ruapuna on April 30th, was fine, but extremely cold.

Students aged from nine years to twelve years old and from throughout Canterbury lined up in their age groups to race off against one another.

Nine and ten year old girls and boys faced a challenging two kilometre run, six kilometre cycle with a final one kilometre run to finish.

Eleven and twelve year old girls and boys had a similar course, however their cycle portion was an additional three kilometres longer.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams commented that the Government’s pre-Budget announcement that it will fund another new primary school for Rolleston is great news for local families.

The school will have a roll capacity of 750 children in years 1 to 8, and is forecast to open in January 2017.

“This school, along with West Rolleston Primary School and Rolleston College, which are due to open in 2016 and 2017 respectively, demonstrate this Government’s commitment to meeting the demands of population growth in our region,” Amy said.

“It’s great to see the proceeds of the Government’s share offer programme going into providing more education options for our local children, and helping to d el iv e r m o d er n s c h o o l environments that meet the needs of the 21st century,” she added.

Code of Responsible Lending As of June 6 this year, the Ministry of Commerce & Consumer Affairs will introduce a Code of Conduct governing lending ins tu ons & their agents to lend responsibly. This puts the onus on lenders to look at realis c budgets by those wishing to borrow, based on fact rather than fantasy.

For instance, to assess whether a borrower will make repayments without substan al hardship, the lender should conduct more detailed inquiries for products or borrowers where the consequences of default are serious or there is a greater risk of default.

This will mean the lender will require a more detailed account of expenses and so when looking for lending, you need to sit down and do a realis c budget reflec ng actual monthly spending rather than what you should be spending! It is not enough to say that you are paying x amount on rent & that you could pay that on a mortgage. The simple truth is, you can walk away from a rental but the consequences are more far reaching and devasta ng when defaul ng on a mortgage.

This Code is a good thing, as is the easing of the 10% threshold for banks other than Auckland. This means there will be another 5% more funding for those in the higher LVR bracket or less than 20% deposit. So if you have been thinking about taking that step, call me now.

Selwyn dog owners will be able to register or re-register dogs and pay registration fees online through the Council’s website this year.

“The new system will make it easier and faster for dog owners to register their dogs and pay dog registration fees from home,” said Senior Animal Control Officer Steve Clarke.

Clarke Through the new system dog owners can also update their address and add or remove a dog, or request a new dog tag if this is lost, online.

Dog registration emails or papers are sent out in mid June with registration due by July 31st.

Earlier this month, many dog owners will have been sent an email from the Council’s Animal

Control team. Dog owners who didn’t received an email are being asked to contact the Council with their email address so they can be let know when the online registration system is ready to use. Email dogrego@selwyn.govt.nz by June 12th with email and physical address, name and dog registration number or numbers.

(Dog registration numbers are found on the dog’s tag.)

“Once dog owners contact the Council with their email address and their dog’s registration number, they will be sent information in mid-June on how to register their dog and pay registration fees online,” Steve advised.

Everyone who uses the online dog registration system will

receive with their dog tag a free dump the doo bag which they can take out with them on walks, keeping Selwyn beautiful and free from mess.

The new online system is easy to use. Dog registration fees can be paid online through Poli using the bank’s payments system or with a credit card.

There is a small service fee for a credit card payment of 72 cents for one dog. If registration is paid by the due date of July 31st, it costs $35 to register the first dog and $25 to register any other dogs.

The Council plans to post dog registration papers to dog owners who do not have an email address or internet access.

Winter causes all sorts of problems with visibility when driving, including snow and ice, fog, rain and increased hours of darkness. The Road Code says that the vehicle’s headlights must be used, from thirty minutes after sunset, until thirty minutes before sun rise and at any other time a driver can’t clearly see a person or vehicle one hundred metres away.

Most of the time it is obvious when lights need to be on, but outside the guidelines given in the road code, there are a number of other circumstances where using vehicle lights will increase visibility and the safety of all road users.

When there is fog, light rain or where there is the potential for sunstrike, it can be more difficult to see other vehicles.

Using vehicle lights on low beam is one of the easiest measures to take to increase visibility. A timely reminder too that a vehicle’s park lights are only designed for use when a vehicle is stationary.

Increasing following distances and taking more care to check ahead before passing in these conditions is also essential as there may be some drivers that are not using their vehicle’s lights and can easily blend into the wintery conditions.

Games lasted twenty minutes making for near non-stop action all day.

Clearview Primary went along to the Rugby Fun day with seven teams ranging from Year 4-6 and including one team of Year 4 girls. For many, it was the first time they had ever played rugby. They had a great day learning a lot of new skills and enjoyed great support from The Year 4 all girls rugby team from Clearview Primary School at their coaches, as well as enthusiastic parents on the side the competition with Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge.

Jaxon De Wys also commented on the day, “it was cool, I really enjoyed the games they were all fun.”

Both students were grateful to their coaches for helping make the day a successful one.

The Lincoln Community Care Association Inc has been providing a range of services for those in need, across Selwyn, for almost forty years. As the name suggests, they are based in Lincoln, and have seen much growth in local townships post earthquakes. As a result they have developed working relationships with a number of other like-minded Selwyn organisations.

Services Development Coordinator, Lois Thomas explained, “we are working closely together to serve our new residents, as well as continuing to support longstanding clients. Selwyn Central Community Care, Selwyn Parenting Network, Ellesmere Community Care and Lincoln and Districts Community Care

are committed to supporting people of all ages, genders, and cultures.”

Some of the services offered include Meals On Wheels which go to Rolleston three days a week. Meals are delivered hot or ready for reheating depending on the situation. In most cases clients receive a subsidy towards the cost, funded by the Canterbury District Health Board. Meals are delivered by dedicated Rolleston volunteers.

Partnership Community Workers offer support, enabling people to better access the health related services they require. A lot of this service involves education, as frequently people are simply not aware of their entitlements.

The Lincoln Zone Cross Country was held at the Halswell Quarry on May 13th. Students who qualify move onto the Canterbury Primary Schools Cross-country in June.

Awareness month, Lincoln and Districts Community Care hope to host a session run by Gratitude Fitness entitled ‘Pelvic Floor Matters’. This year’s theme for Continence Awareness week is Incontinence Support for NZ Carers: It relates to family, friends, and caregivers and the need to better support those who have the challenge of caring for someone who is incontinent.

Another item under consideration for later this year is a workshop on Problem Gambling. Gambling problems affect people from all walks of life. Statistics indicate that two out of every five regular pokie users already have a gambling problem, or are at risk of developing one. Every person with a gambling problem affects between five and ten others.

Another programme under the Lincoln Community Care banner is Selwyn Sages. This is a free confidential community-based mentoring programme that taps into the life experiences of New Zealanders to help families and individuals in their community.

Trained mentors, who are dedicated volunteers, offer oneon-one mentoring to individuals, parents, families and couples in their own home, or occasionally in group settings. Skills in many areas, such as growing one’s own vegetable gardens, cooking, hand crafts, parenting and budgeting, can be developed. Firewood for sale A passion for the great outdoors, especially the natural beauty of Canterbury, was a huge motivating factor in the creation of a new outdoor adventure group, based in Selwyn. Organiser and group spokesperson, Stuart Douce felt that, “it would be great to have a local group of like minded people to experience outdoor adventures with, instead of having to travel into Christchurch.”

The emphasis for the group is on fun and being social in the

great outdoors. Ideas for activities are virtually unlimited.

Options suggested to date include; day and weekend trips, day walks, tramping, kayaking, skiing/boarding, cycling, mountain biking, cycle touring to name just a few.

In May keen members of the group enjoyed a Cass Saddle overnight tramp, in the picturesque but rugged Craigieburn Forest Park. On June 6th, many are looking forward to another, mountain biking the Wharfedale Track near Oxford.

Young entrepreneurs have been invited to set up stalls at a market that is being held during Youth Week. Youth Week started on May 23rd and finishes on May 31st.

The aim is to recognise the amazing contributions and achievements of young people in New Zealand.

Organised by the Selwyn Youth Council, the market and Skate Jam will be held at Rolleston Skate Park on Saturday, May 30th.

“We believe that the market will be a brilliant outlet for the youth of Selwyn to practice their entrepreneurship in a supportive environment. It will give young people a way to better develop their financial literacy and skill, with people that they know and trust at the heart of their community,” said Rafael Clarke, Selwyn Youth Council Chairperson.

Young people aged between

12 and 24 can register to have a free stall by emailing Chris.Martin@selwyn.govt.nz, or visiting the ‘Sensational Selwyn Youth’ Facebook page.

Registration remains open until all of the stalls are booked.

Anyone registering to run a stall will receive an information sheet with advice on food safety and health and safety requirements. Stall owners will also need to check they have change for customers. The Youth Council plan to have its PUBLIC NOTICES

The group is open to anyone and details about them and their activities can be found on their Facebook page. There are currently well over one hundred members on Facebook already and with so many amazing options for t hi ngs t o do a r ound Canterbury, there is sure to be something for everyone.
