The thought of walking fifty kilometres may seem daunting for some people, but then add in walking the fifty kilometres with full fire gear on plus carrying breathing apparatus, weighing around 22 kilograms, and most would decline the idea. However the Canterbury Stairclimb Team did no such thing, and relished in the challenge. The Canterbur y Stairclimb Team includes Firefighters from Rolleston Kaiapoi and Rangiora. The team (along with two members of the Netball Club) have just completed the fifty kilometre walk, from Rangiora to Rolleston. The event was to raise funds and awareness for Leukemia and Blood Cancer, as part of the annual fundraiser for the Auckland Firefighter Skytower climb, to be held in May next year. The team was also joined by a special guest Tristan Park, whose daughter, Charlotte, Charlotte was diagnosed with leukemia in August. Tristan also completed the fifty kilometres in full fire kit and carrying breathing apparatus, although he is not a firefighter. The teams were thankful for support given along the way, especially on reaching Templeton when they were met by other members of the Rolleston Brigade.

Together they completed the final ten kilometres, along with family and friends. Leukemia and Blood Cancer, the chosen charity for this event, and t o c el eb r a t e t h ei r te n t h anniversary, are hoping to fundraise a million dollars this year. Approximately $480,000 was raised last year. Phil Glen, Glen one of the Rolleston Fire Brigade, participating team members said, “the walk was personally one of the hardest and most gruelling things I've ever done and the whole team agrees with me on that. We have climbed some of the tallest buildings in New Zealand, Australia and America, some over one hundred storeys high and with all of our kit on, so you can get a picture of how hard this walk was.” Phil continued, “not one member gave up and every member had nasty blisters and aching joints everywhere, but such is the p as sio n , co m m itm en t a nd stubbornness of this team, each and every one of them guts it out.” “The twelve hour walk, took days and days to recover from completely, just in time for the team to compete last weekend, in the 88 storey stairclimb at Eureka Tower Melbourne,” Phil finished!
