The National Army Museum in Waiouru has made a poignant contribution to the new Rannerdale World War One Commemorative Centre in Riccarton, with the donation of a special poppy wall hanging.

The National Army Museum’s ‘Patriotic Call to Yarn’ project commemorates the 18,166 New Zealanders who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. In honour of these men and women, the National Army Museum is collecting knitted poppies from all around the country to create a display of 18,166 cascading poppies in the Museum’s Roimata Pounamu - Tears on Greenstone memorial area. It is some of these poppies that have been made into a unique wall hanging and gifted to Rannerdale Veterans’ Care.

Sharing the common goal of remembrance, Rannerdale Veterans’ Care has developed a World War One Commemorative Centre which includes a small Museum, library, and research centre with a focus on Canterbury WWI Veterans.

In addition to the poppy wall hanging, the National Army Museum has sent Rannerdale harakeke crosses from the D o l o r e s C ro s s P ro j e c t (www.dolorescrossproject.org).

This project involves volunteers from around the world, placing a handmade cross on the graves of New Zealand soldiers, and photographing them. The Dolores Cross Project now has a database of thousands of New Zealand graves featuring the harakeke cross.

“It’s such a positive feeling when we can work alongside other organisations on such a worthwhile project,” Steve said.

“There is a strong link between the National Army Museum and Rannerdale - the WWI stories and experiences featured at Waiouru would have been very familiar to the first Veteran residents of Rannerdale in the 1920s.”

Anyone wishing to make a poppy for the National Army Museum’s ‘Patriotic Call to Yarn’ project can email Alison Jones (Project co-ordinator) at armymuseum@nzdf.mil.nz for a knitting pattern and information, or call Rannerdale Veterans’ Care. Poppies can be knitted, crocheted, sewn or hand crafted, and there are several patterns available for all abilities.

Finished poppies can be dropped off at Rannerdale Veterans’ Care, who will then organise their delivery to the National Army Museum.

The Rannerdale World War One Commemorative Centre in Riccarton will be officially opened by the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs on February 28th.

The Rolleston Rugby Club is already well and truly gearing up for a big year. Following on from the successful past seasons with their Colts and Division 2 teams they will, for the first time ever, be entering a Division 1 team in the Ellesmere competition. This is an exciting step for Rolleston Rugby as a Club, as it gives existing senior players a chance to shine in the Ellesmere and combined country competition, it gives a team for their junior players to aspire to, and has encouraged local residents who may have previously played in town, or newcomers to Rolleston, to come forward and play for their local team.

Club officials have been working tirelessly behind the scenes since last year, before the 2014 season had even finished, to get a strong team together, along with an excellent coaching and management team to ensure the team is fit and ready for Division 1 kick off on March 28th. Rolleston Rugby Club’s experienced Division 2 coach from last season Andrew Foster, Foster has

stayed with the Club to take this Div 1 team forward, along with Koru Gray, Gray an experienced coach who joins Club coaching staff from Burnside Rugby Club, in Christchurch. The pair will be joined by John Pearson, Pearson an experienced coach from Mid Canterbury. These three will be assisted by Jo Baird and Nicola Kempton who will be the team managers and they, together with the coaches, will ensure the team is at its best on game days.

Pre-season training has already commenced at the Rolleston Reserve for all the senior teams - check the Club website for full and further details of this. As always the Club is extremely appreciative of the support given by their major sponsors, many of whom are returning again this year. The Club have also been extremely lucky to have on board a number of other sponsors, both for the Club and for the senior team, and these partners/sponsors will be announced over the coming months.

Season start dates are March 28th for Division 1, and at this stage April 18th for all other grades (dependent on team numbers in senior grades U14½ to Division 2).

At the close of 2014 West Melton Primary School bid a fond farewell to its Deputy Principal, Heather McHarg who had been at West Melton School for 21 years.

Heather was looking forward to retiring and will be putting some energy into her extensive gardens, grandchildren and numerous other interests.

Heather has inspired staff and students alike with her love of learning and the s chool community feel they are the richer for having enjoyed her presence, but know she will be greatly missed.

Selwyn Sports Trust have announced that entries are now open for the Lake Crichton Series – Triathlon and Duathlon.

The series was such a success this year that it is now set to be a regular fixture on the Selwyn event calendar.

This family friendly three race series is hosted on Friday evenings at Lake Crichton, just south of Dunsandel. The man-

There are long and short courses in both the triathlon and duathlon, and team entry possibilities, as well. The three races have been planned around other events in the New Year; end of January,

Volunteers planting a crop of fodder beet for harvest at South Island Field Days 2015, the first to be held at the new Kirwee site.

The organisers of South Island Agricultural Field Days are well down the track shifting the venue of the popular event from Lincoln to Kirwee.

Last month the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) executive committee took ownership of its new site, a 40 hectare property on Courtenay Road, near Kirwee township.

Volunteer working bees have been busy getting the property ready for the March 25th-27th event, and sponsors are being lined up to support its various components.

“South Island Field Days 2015 will be bigger and better than ever,” organising committee member Daniel Schat said.

“It will provide visitors the same mix of displays, agricultural mach inery, and fencing demonstrations that has made the event such a success in the past.

“We will also have the AgriInnovation competition, with awards for best New Zealandmade machine, best farm

invention, and best imported farm machine. We expect to see a range of new companies and new technologies this year.”

D aniel comm ent ed t hat volunteers have cleared the Kirwee site, put up fences, prepared the way for water and irrigation lines, and planted oats, fodder beet and other crops for machinery demonstrations.

“Both Vodafone and Spark have assured us that there will be good mobile phone coverage and plenty of data available to ensure new technology can perform at its best,” he added.

Pump and irrigation equipment provider Think Water Leeston has installed and will maintain an irrigator to ensure the crops are in top condition.

Power for the 2015 South Island Field Days will be supplied by generators, but in the future the Kirwee site will likely be connected to the grid.

Food stalls and a licensed booth will be open for the duration of the Field Days, and lunch will be available the day before, for

exhibitors setting up their displays. Eftpos will also be available on-site.

With more than 25,000 people expected to attend South Island Field Days, the event will definitely give a boost to the local Malvern economy.

In addition to a surge of customers for hospitality businesses, local community groups will raise money by directing traffic, parking cars, and pitching tents at the event.

Malvern Anglican Parish is taking a creative approach by organising bed and breakfast homestays for exhibitors and visitors. Their effort will not only raise money for the parish, it will give visitors a chance to meet local people in their homes.

S IA FD is a non- prof it organisation that is staffed by volunteers. A percentage of the money it raises from running the Field Days goes to scholarships for Lincoln University Students. Students can apply for the scholarships at any time through SIAFD.

Consumer groups advise that vehicle owners should not do a twelve month renewal on their vehicle licences (‘rego’), in order to save money ahead of forthcoming reductions in ACC levies.

The Automobile Association and Consumer NZ are both advising motorists whose vehicle licences need renewing before July 2015 to renew for a shorter period so that it expires shortly after July 1st.

From that date, annual motor vehicle licence levies will reduce by an average of forty five percent for most vehicles (except motorcycles, mopeds, trailers and caravans).

For cars aged under forty years, the actual reduction will vary according to the cars’ safety rating, calculated by ACC. The annual savings will range from $42-$132 for petrol-powered vehicles, and $82-$172 for diesels. ACC tax on petrol will also fall three cents per litre on July 1st, 2015.

“Motorists relicensing their vehicles for twelve months now

will end up paying too much. For some cars, the potential savings amount to eleven dollars a month, so owners should think about renewing their vehicle licence for a shorter period to s av e m on ey , ” ad v is e d Consumer NZ Head of Testing Paul Smith.

Smith AA Principal Advisor Mark Stockdale pointed out that owners can relicence their vehicles for any length of time.

“For example, if the motor vehicle licences expires in December, only renew for seven months. To maximise your savings in February, only renew it for five months.”

“When motorists go to AA Centres to renew their vehicle licence, our staff will advise them how many months they should relicence their vehicle to maximise savings,” Mark concluded.

A co-ordinated compliance operation on the region’s waterways recently, returned extremely positive results. More than 200 anglers were checked by the team of nineteen consisting of staff and honorary rangers, and only one fisherman was found to be fishing without a licence. Another angler was warned, as it could have been perceived he was targeting salmon without a licence, but he was given the benefit of the doubt on this occasion.

North Canterbury Fish & Game Head of Compliance, Dirk Barr, Barr said the onus is on the angler to prove that they are not targeting salmon or sports fish, which, “given the type of tackle

being used and the locations some of these unlicensed anglers are fishing, could be very hard for them to do.

“The argument that, ‘I was only fishing for Kahawai’ doesn’t really stack up when you’re in a boat with a licenced fisherman who is fishing for salmon and you are using the same lure,” Dirk commented.

The decision to check anglers on the regions ‘big’ rivers and lakes coincided with an increase in angling pressure, as the peak of the salmon and trout seasons approach. John pointed out that, “the majority of salmon anglers are doing it right, and given the capital outlay on equipment, they realise that a few extra

BEST GOLF OF THEIR LIVES LIVES Two local golfers recently played the best golf of their lives on the same day.

Friends Geoff Wylie and Peter Jamieson were playing at the Ellesmere Golf Club on Tuesday, January 13th, during the weekly Twilight Golf competition.

Geoff, playing on an 18 handicap, shot an even-par 36 off the stick over the nine holes played, the lowest score he has achieved over nine holes. Peter, on a higher handicap, also shot his best round, 50.

Twilight Golf at the Ellesmere Golf Club is open to anyone, whether they have a handicap or not, and starts between 5 and 6pm each Tuesday. Players find this is a very pleasant time of the day to play, and enjoy the relaxed and social atmosphere.

GOLFER PLAYS HIS AGE A rare event was achieved by a local golfer on Wednesday, January 14th, when he played a gross round of golf, in less than his age.

Many players have the dream of, ‘one day I would love to play under my age’, but very few ever achieve this feat.

At the Ellesmere Golf Club, Richard Taiaroa took just 73 strokes to complete his round of golf, and is 75 years of age.

It is a remarkable feat because it is rare for players to achieve this score at any age, and while some don’t like to admit it, playing sport does become more difficult with age!

“Most anglers were very happy to see the rangers and were often keen for a chat about the state of the fishery, or what’s been caught and where. This can make it quite timeconsuming to check only a few licences, but it’s also a very rewarding opportunity to engage with our stakeholders,” John concluded.

With the main salmon run just beginning, further compliance monitoring is planned over the coming weeks.

West Melton Bowling Club pre-Christmas Men’s competitions included Centre 7s, 2 x 4s and 3 x 3s, Junior 4s, Malvern 5s and Club triples. All teams competing in the Centre competitions acquitted themselves well especially the West Melton junior team who came close to qualifying for the playoffs. The Malvern 5s competition will conclude at the end of January.

The Club Congratulates Roger Marshall, Marshall Dennis Herrick and Brian Hecker(s), Hecker who won the Men’s Club Championship Triples, suffering just one loss out of ten games.

The Malvern Junior Singles was played on November 23rd and West Melton bowler Keith McMeeking was the deserved winner.

On November 6th the Men’s and Women’s Inter - District Quadrangular 4s were played. Ken Sharplin, Sharplin David Gooch (juniors) Jeff Mugford, Mugford Bob Burnett, Burnett Bill Paekau and Bob Shorter (seniors) were selected to play for Malvern. For the Ladies, Gretta Leigh, Barbara Herrick, Herrick Brenda Dunlop (seniors) Ali Gardiner and Mary Burke (juniors) were selected. In the Malvern Open Pairs which was played on December 13th and 14th, Bill Paekau and Bob Burnett were runners-up to a pair from Darfield. Congratulations to West Melton’s Allan Sadler, who along with Heather Patterson from Coalgate, won the Malvern Open Mixed Pairs, which was held on January 3rd and 4th, in convincing fashion. They won all of their eight games over the two days which is understood to be the first time this has happened in the history of this competition.

SRS New Zealand Ltd (Rolleston sawmill) requires a cleaner/labourer for their modern sawmill.

The hours would be from 12 noon to 10.30pm Monday to Thursday.

The first part of the shift would be cleaning outside the mill, inside cleaning would commence once the mill has finished cutting.

Cleaning would be required around and below the log deck (clearing bark chip), and around the mill buildings. Then inside the mill sweeping sawdust around the equipment and shovelling into bins.

After a meeting several days ago, I couldn't find my keys. I quickly gave myself a personal "TSA Pat Down."

They weren't in my pockets. Suddenly I realised I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My husband has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car's ignition.

He's afraid that the car could be stolen. As I looked around the parking lot, I realised he was right.

The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen.

Then I made the most difficult call of all to my husband: "I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen."

There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice, "Are you kidding me?" he barked, "I dropped you off!"

Now it was my turn to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me."

He retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this cop that I didn't steal your damn car!"
