Whenever a Beef and Lamb Excellence Award is seen, diners can expect tasty, skilfully compos ed and sup erbl y presented beef and lamb dishes. West Melton’s, Melton Estate is thrilled to have been the recipient of an Award as part of the 2014 New Zealand Beef and Lamb Ex cellen ce Aw ards announced early this month. The dishes that so impressed the anonymous assessor were part of Melton Estate’s Spring Lunch Menu: The Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder and Hazelnut Crusted Lamb Rack with a vanilla parsnip mash, ginger roasted baby carrots and gremolata with a wine suggestion of Melton Estate Pinot Noir, attracted the following comments from the judges: “This was a beautifully

The original way of presenting the vegetables is to be applauded and the hazelnut crust and gremolata gave the dish texture.” The Canterbury Angus Beef Fillet with a beef cheek pie, confit shallots, pea puree and kumara cr isps w i th i ts accompanying wine suggestion Melton Estate Pinot Noir also drew positive comments from the judges: “The fillet was
tender, well trimmed and flavoursome and the beef cheek pie was a nice rich addition. The pea puree was a great addition to the dish complementing the beef well while the kumara chips added texture and crunch to the meal.” “This was a most enjoyable meal which easily reached Excellence Award standard.”

A school road patrol team provides an important service to the community. Road patrol, is a team of senior primary and intermediate age children who have been trained by the Police to operate the swing out stop signs at pedestrian crossing points. This enables school pupils to safely cross the road. Eighteen students of Rolleston School have undertaken the Road Patrol selection process
and training, expertly run by Constable Sam Filipo. Filipo The school community thank the parents who have kindly offered their time to supervise the morning patrol. Rolleston School ask that people drive carefully, park respectfully and keep their speed down when travelling through the crossings, to help the road patrol team keep Rolleston School students safe.

Rachel de Vries and husband Jason whose Lego collection of 37 years inspired the Lego fundraiser. Rachel de Vries is looking to raise much needed funds to assist with a project dear to her heart, at Weedons School. Rachel, being a keen gardener herself, is actively involved in the setting up of the Weedons School Garden Club (‘Little Sprouts Garden Club’) and already there are twenty eager students participating. “They have so many questions and are all so keen to help,” Rachel smiled! “The skills and lessons the children will learn by being part of this Club will be so valuable to their practical life skills and general knowledge,” Rachel said. Plans for this year include planting some native trees around the school (kindly donated by Southern Woods Nursery), and the construction of a seat around the base of a beautiful conifer tree to provide a comfortable shaded area for the children. Plans are also afoot to build a recycled bottle green house and the children
have already been busy collecting bottles for this. “We would like to possibly get a rain water catching tank for watering the gardens, add picnic tables, make pavers, build a pizza oven, and lots more,” enthused Rachel. As with any new Club in its initial stages, funding and resources are limited, therefore some creative thinking was required to address this. Rachel, and husband Jason, came up with an innovative idea to kick-start the fundraising
initiative. Rachel has spent countless hours (over thirty five in fact, along with more than 13,000 blocks) constructing a Lego model of her home. This magnificent display, along with some add itional equall y impressive models, plus sales tables, are to be open to the public, as a fundraiser for the Weedons School garden club. The display is open for viewing in Rolleston and entry is by gold coin donation.

Safekids Aotearoa have issued the following safety advice for both students and drivers as students return to school this week. For students:
earphones when crossing the road, and to stop walking if they need to make a phone call or send a text message. • Watch out for sneaky driveways. If the driveway can’t be seen from the footpath, stop, look and listen as if crossing the road to make sure there are no cars exiting the driveway. For drivers: • Double check intersections and crossings. A student might dart across the street when least anticipated. They’re also pretty hard to see in between parked cars. Making full stops at intersections and slowing down in high pedestrian traffic areas will give more time to be completely sure the road is clear of children. • Slow down in school zones
at all times. School zones have signs that require drivers to obey a lower speed limit. Some school signs are turned on before and after school and other times such as lunch time. Safekids Aotearoa however encourages drivers to slow down at school zones at all t ime s a nd e ven on weekends. An evening event or a weekend game might be happening, so you still need to watch out for children. Passing school buses. Either way it’s twenty kilometres per hour. If a school bus has stopped the law requires vehicles to slow down and drive at 20kph or less until well past - no matter which direction the driver is coming from.

Selwyn District Council received one hundred and forty five entries in their recent anti drink driving campaign competition promoting being a master host, during the festive season. Along with the entri es, participants had to suggest three ‘master host tips’ aimed at being a good host. Two of the most common road safety related tips for being a good host were: • Ensuring people had a safe way home. • Having non-alcoholic drinks for drivers. Many other tips received were about having plenty of food along with numerous other ways to look after guests. The lucky winner drawn on December 23rd was Barbara Clinton of Darfield, who was the recipient of a Gasmate travel BBQ and accompanying implement set. Selwyn District Council’s new year drink driving campaign is continuing with many local licenced premises b eing involved. Bar mats, posters and coasters have been distributed
The 25 metre lap pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston will be closed from 5pm on Sunday, January 26th until Sunday, February 2nd, and won’t be available for swimming during this period. A small number of tiles need to be replaced in the pool which requires that the pool be drained of water. The rest of the Aquatic Centre, including the hydrotherapy, toddler, learn to swim, leisure, lazy river and spa pools will be open as normal while the retiling is carried out. The centre is open from 6am 9pm Monday to Friday and 8am - 8pm at weekends and on public holidays. “The Aquatic Centre has been a popular place to visit during the holidays and we have enjoyed having many families coming and visiting us from

The Canterbury Centre’s three fours competition concluded on Saturday, December 14th. Since 1983 the Speight’s Coast to Coast has led the way in adventure sports. But more than anything it is a people’s race bringing together all kinds of people of all age and ability, from all ends of New Zealand. When Robin Judkins dreamed up the 3km run, 55km cycle, 34km mountain run, 15km cycle, 67km river kayak and 70km cycle across New Zealand’s South Island, it created a unique event where weekend warriors could rub s h ou lde rs wit h worl d champions. Such is the
event’s reputation it routinely attracts participants from more than a dozen countries. But here in New Zealand it has be come th e c ount ry ’ s challenge of choice. Among regions, Canterbury is understandably the best represented region. While the earthquake recovery has affected entries in recent y ea rs , organ ise rs a re confident that locals will return once their lives settle down again. The youngest entrants this year are three school mates, all seventeen year olds from
Kaiapoi. Fittingly, the youngest entrants will race in the newest event category, the three person team. For every entrant with winning ambitions, there are ten who take on the Speight’s Coast to Coast for personal reasons, ranging from the challenge, to a weekend away with mates. The 32nd Speight’s Coast to Coast is scheduled for February 14-15. Racing starts on Kumara Beach, midway be t we en H okit ik a an d Greymouth, and finishes 243km later on Sumner Beach in Christchurch.
Thinking of developing a new area of garden? Putting in a deck, pool or tennis court? All of these things add huge value to a property, but need to be planned down to the smallest detail if they are to be successfully integrated into an existing landscape. It goes without saying that plants are going to play a large part of any landscape design. Choosing the correct plant for a site is a no-brainer,
although many people just don’t have the expertise to know what can be planted where. Knowing how high a plant grows, what conditions it likes, whether it might get out of control and overtake other plants, whether it will drop leaves or flowers where it shouldn’t, are just a few things that should be considered. Anyone seriously planning to develop their lifestyle block, or residential garden, should
seek help now! It might be in the form of a landscape architect, who can help by talking in-depth about what’s wanted, as well as what’s needed and provide a detailed planting and concept plan which is basically ‘plant by numbers’. Or it could be by just visiting the local nursery and asking their advice either at the nursery, or by having one of their staff visit for an on-site consultation.
Southern Woods, offer all of these services, and just love to spend time with their customers showing them their display gardens, where fully-grown examples of so many different planting options can be viewed. The successful applicant will be expected to have a range of skills (reliability, strong excel skills, preferably some timber experience and/or some farming background, and a strong team player), to be effective in reaching the role’s objectives. The employee must also be highly organized with a very high level of accuracy and experience in a small office environment completing a range of tasks to a high standard. On-going support, training and supervision will be offered. For further info go to the same job advertised on TradeMe or www.greenwoodinfo.co.nz. DID YOU KNOW? If you have a mains pressure hot water cylinder, it is recommended by the manufacturers that the sacrificial anode is checked every 10 years, & replaced if necessary. This will greatly increase the life of your cylinder.
