boys kicking and blocking at a frantic pace, it only lasted a few seconds for the winning point, but for those watching it seemed like an age! The result was Bronze for Connor with Caelum missing out on a medal.

Fourteen year old Kyla, Kyla the Club’s junior Black belt and fifteen year old Ander both excelled and won Gold medals.

43 year old Paul, Paul in his first tournament, won through to the final only to discover he was up

against a mountain of a man from the West Coast. It was a gallant effort from Paul and one which gained him a very well deserved Silver medal.

The Club’s next competition is in Blenheim at the end of October, but before then they will continue their training sessions at Clearview Primary School’s h all each M ond ay an d Wednesday.

Steven Maw from Southbridge VFB recently ran a 1.36 at the US National Firefighter Combat Challenge in Texas.

He's made it to the Lions Den for the fastest competitors! Steven was New Zealand's 2014 Champion achieving a time of 1:46.43 in March and is heading to the World Champs in Phoenix, Arizona next. Awesome stuff Steven best of luck for the World Champs!

A new Justice of the Peace drop-in clinic is starting in Selwyn to cater for the needs of the growing population.

There are currently 46 Justices of the Peace (JPs) in Selwyn, servicing a population of around 50,000.

The weekly drop-in service will be available at the Lincoln

Library every Tuesday from 10am - 1p m, s tar ting o n November 4th. A local JP will be on hand to witness signatures, verify copies of documents including cellphone texts and computer displayed results, take oaths and declarations, and complete affidavits.

Lincoln JP Tony Gemmill who says there’s a huge demand for JPs across all of Selwyn, especially in the areas that are ex p er i en ci n g s ig n if i can t population growth such as Lincoln and Rolleston. “As our community grows, so do their needs,” he said. “We’re finding more and more people need our services but may often find it hard to track down a local JP when they need something verified or witnessed. So we are following the nationwide trend of providing easy and regular access to a local JP.” This November marks 200 years since the first Justice of the Peace for New Zealand, Thomas Kendall, was appointed in 1814.

Tony, who has been a Justice of the Peace for the past twelve years, has recently moved to Lincoln after previously being based in Christchurch where there are five established clinics. “Sian McDonald from the Lincoln Library expressed an interest in providing this service from the library and service centre, so after some communication with other local JPs we now have enough available to set up a weekly roster.”

“We have no idea what the demand may be like, but it does present an easy and regular opportunity for the community to come along and request a service without the need to venture to the city which may have been the case before,” he said.

Founded on the love of Lego, along with a sizeable collection of it, has come an unusual and unique business for Rolleston couple Jason and Rachel de Vries.

Vries “We came up with the House of Bricks business idea back in June this year as Jason has a lifetime collection of Lego and I felt it was time it was put to use,” Rachel commented. “I have a background in childcare and really enjoy working with children, so the combination of Lego and little people seemed ideal!

At the same time as planning this business one of the largest collections of Lego for building M.O.C’s (My Own Creations) came up for sale and we purchased it. We also purchased some other smaller Lego collections specifically for use at birthday parties, team b u i ld in g ex er ci s es an d Community Events. We wanted to provide something that was unique and not on offer already here in Canterbury and I think we have successfully found that market.”

“Jason enjoys building with Technic (Technic is a line of Lego interconnecting plastic rods and parts) and has over seventy models.

He also spends some time coming up with his own creations. One build that is his favourite is a Technic plane that he built and th en d isp l ayed at Th e Christchurch Brick Show back in July this year. The plane was taken from a model released by the Lego group and Jason took that model and made it twice the size and fully functioning! This is now on display in our studio.”

Following the success of the Springfield School Malvern Aprons fundraiser (they have sold over 600 in under eight weeks), organisers have branched out into Selwyn Aprons - in response to numerous requests.

The Malvern aprons, adorned with the names of all Malvern towns, have been popular with people of all ages, and brought in $9,000 worth of profit for the school.

“Loads have been sent overseas to family members, expats, tourists and international students and they’ve gone all over the globe; it’s been amazing,” enthused one of the organisers Fiona Davidson.

The aim of the Selwyn Athletic Club is to provide a friendly and fun environment for all ages to learn and enjoy athletics and for athletes to motivate and push themselves to achieve personal bests.

Record numbers turned up on opening Monday night for their first Club meeting at Brookside Park with a considerable number of athletes deciding to give the inter club competition a go this year.

The Club got off to a flying start at this season’s first Interclub meeting at Rawhiti Domain also the venue for the second interclub meet, before heading to Timaru to compete on the all weather track there. Those attending the August meeting of the Rolleston Combined Probus Club had the pleasure of listening to Colin Patterson as their main speaker who delighted with new material in the form of poetry. Those present were then regaled with ‘Tales from the High Seas’. August also saw the group visit Kilmarnock Enterprises and see/hear all that they do.

September’s main speaker was Gavin Bishop, Bishop the well known author of children’s books. He was extremely entertaining, plus offered some of his books for sale to those present.

Also during September a large group from Rolleston Combined Probus enjoyed an outing to Burnham Military Camp. It was an opportunity to look through the facility and enjoy some lunch while there. Sadly, time wasn’t on their side and a visit to the army’s museum, although looked forward to by many, wasn’t possible on the day.

Several members also enjoyed the Northern South Island Probus Association thirtieth birthday lunch at the Hornby Working Men’s Club.

In October and just in time for Spring gardening the group heard Rachel Vogan speak. Rachel, a well known gardener, who has written numerous books and columns on the topic, impressed and entertained those present with her knowledge.

On October 21st the group headed to Oxford for the day in wonderful weather. A tour around Ribblesdale gardens enchanted all and this was followed by an enjoyable luncheon at the Oxford Working Men’s Club. Lunch over, it was a visit to Oxford retail stores, the art gallery and a drive home via Tram Road.

Next month’s speaker is Victoria Metcalf an Antarctic Researcher, while the mini speaker is Tracey Dearsley speaking about the herb sage. The forthcoming bus trip to Erewhon High Country Station has proven to be so popular that organisers have scheduled a second bus to accommodate all those wishing to go. The trip will travel via Mt Somers (for morning tea) and include Edoras and Hakatere Station too.

The Probus year concludes with the Christmas party on December 9th at Lincoln College.

This year the Hororata Highland Games (to be held on November 8th at the Hororata Domain) will host the inaugural Oceania Heavyweight Championship, when professional heavy athletes from New Zealand, Australia and Scotland will compete over eight traditional Scottish disciplines for the title.

Many of these traditional disciplines date back many centuries when they were used to train for war, or to select a King’s personal guard.

“I have been involved in Highland Games in New Zealand since 1988, as an athlete in the Heavy E vents, and have competed in Games and gatherings in Finland, USA, Australia, Malaysia, Canada and, o f co u r s e, S co tl an d , ” commented Pat. “It is exciting to have the opportunity to help the Hororata Highland Games develop this Championship, which will equal many of the international events I have

competed in.”

“The Hororata Highland Games have been working towards having a championship since the event’s inception and to achieve this after just three years is testament to the dedication and hard work of the team,” Pat added.

The Hororata Highland Games are committed to developing the sport of heavy eventing and will run a Novice Competition alongside the Professional Heavies. This year the Novice competitors will compete for the Hororata Highland Games Championship.

“The athletes look forward to the Games because it is unique; the country hospitality that is extended to the guys is really special. Now with the Oceania Heavyweight Championship on offer as well, there are many more athletes that are going to want to compete in Hororata,” Pat concluded.

The founders of Rolleston Christian School are delighted to announce that all the approvals are through from the Minister of Education, a Resource Consent has been granted by the Selwyn District Council for building the School and the enrolment season is under way.

Another local appointed by the Minister is Heather Agnew, who along with her husband Brent, Brent has carried the vision for the School and whose family provided part of the School site. Also on the Establishment Board is Sam Broughton a product of Christian education himself and currently a Selwyn District Councillor. The appointees are rounded out by Ngaire Button, Button ex Deputy Mayor of Christchurch and recent candidate for the Maori Party in Te Tai Tonga.

Ngaire’s family have all attended Christian Schools and she has previous governance experience in this area.

The building of the School campus is well advanced. The main teaching block now has a roof and is in the process of being closed in. A house on the property is being converted for use as the administration centre. Parking and landscaping will follow. The School will enjoy brand new purpose built facilities, initially for up to 150 pupils. These state of the art facili ties allow for both traditional and more modern modes of teaching and learning.

Horn as its foundational principal.

She hails from Maranatha Christian School in Wellington, where she was Deputy Principal. Liz is busy connecting with the Rolleston community and talking to parents about enrolling their children.

The Establishment Board are planning for an opening roll in the vicinity of 100 pupils in Years 1 to 6. They are currently recruiting the staff team which

will include five teachers and an office manager.

Enrolments will continue in Term 4.

Irish Burial at Sea Mick and Paddy had promised their Uncle Seamus, who had been a seafaring gent all his life, that they would bury him at sea when he died.

Of course, in due time, he did pass away and the boys kept their promise.

They set off with Uncle Seamus all stitched up in a burial bag and loaded onto their rowboat. After a while Mick says, “Do yer tink dis is fer enuff out, Paddy?”

Without a word Paddy slips over the side only to find himself standing in water up to his knees. “Dis'll never do, Mick. Let's row some more.'“ After a bit more rowing Paddy slips over the side again but the water is only up to his belly, so they row on. Again Mick asks Paddy, “Do yer tink dis is fer enuff out Paddy?”

Once again Paddy slips over the side and almost immediately says, “No dis'll neva do.” The water was only up to his chest.

So on they row and row and row and finally Paddy slips over the side and disappears. Quite a bit of time goes by and poor Mick is really getting himself into a state when suddenly Paddy breaks the surface gasping for breath.

“Well is it deep enuff yet, Paddy?”

“Aye'tis, now hand me dat shovel!”
