eureka moment, the Ngapuarata Tasting House was planned. Yvonne wanted a place where people could come and have a wine, or a beer plus some good food, while enjoying the hot Canterbury days with a view of the Southern AIps. Easter weekend 2O1O the Ngapuarata Vines and Wines Tasting House was officially opened to the public. Unbeknown at this time was the fact that later the same year, the unforgettable September 4th earthquake would strike. The epicentre was confirmed at j us t 9O O m etr es fr o m Ngapuarata on Highfield Road, ten kilometres south of Kirwee, where the faultline opened up, and moved the road. This significant event saw the tasting house renamed ‘Quake Shaken Café’ - a name that initiates many a conversation over a vino. Quake Shaken Café is a beautiful place to relax, enjoy the views and sample the delicious wines, while enjoying some of the great food on offer.

Large country gardens, brimming azalea s, m econ opsi s bl ue treasures are ready to delight with flowering rhododendrons, poppies and many other garden crowds for what will be the second Oxford Country Garden Fete and Vintage Fair, held at Ribblesdale Gardens. Taking place on November 2nd and 3rd, this is a community fundraiser and a chance for business owners to promote their products to wider Canterbury. Funds raised will be donated to the Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade and Search and Rescue. Support is also going to Ashley Gorge Advisory Board, The Cancer Society, and the Oxford Museum. Both of them have worked hard towards organising the day, and they see

Six years ago, Allure of Lincoln opened its doors. Over the ensuing years, the shop has built itself a reputation that is second to none, for their friendly, helpful and professional service. The staff at Allure believe it’s a fallacy that all women love to shop, which is why they are so understanding when it comes to helping people choose just the right outfit. The shop is purposefully uncluttered and well organised, every garment will be found on a sized hanger and customers aren’t fighting
their way through overcrowded racks. Allure of Lincoln mainly stock the type of clothing that most women wear most of the time, such as great fitting jeans from Vassalli and New London, casual tops and jackets from Seduce, Vue, Zafina, Seven Sisters, Sao Paulo, Sandwich, Jetblonde, and many other great labels. They have an assortment of dresses from casual, everyday wear, to more special occasion pieces. Their colourful and comfortable shoes from Wicked are also a hit this
season. Due to its growing reputation and rapidly increasing client-base, the shop has recently relocated to new premises. They can now be found on Gerald Street (the main street of Lincoln), right next to the Post Shop. Their hours have also extended; Weekdays from 9am until 5:30pm, and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Lynda, Lynda Sue and Maureen of Allure would love to welcome folk from throughout Selwyn to their new store and show customers just what it has to offer.
For anyone not already acquainted with it, Che Bello is a wonderful store in Dunsandel which celebrated its third birthday this month. The store is full of gifts and goodies, where
customers can certainly find something a little different. Owner Sarah van Hoof prides herself on the store’s extensive range, where everyone is certain to find something to suit. Customers celebrated Che Bello’s birthday over a glass of bubbles with owner Sarah and the successful evening was full of seasonal cheer. The Christmas decorations and tree were revealed and the shelves were full of new stock, in preparation for the festive season. With Christmas rapidly approaching Che Bello is now open seven days, and a layby
until Christmas service is available for anyone, to help with planning. The friendly staff can also gift wrap gifts and presents ready to be taken home and placed under the tree. Che Bello are now stockists of the Vigorella clothing range and have a wonderful selection of hats, fascinators and cocktail dresses, suitable for the races or summer weddings. With an easy to use and well designed website, friends and family around the world can shop on line, and gifts can be sent directly to the recipient.

The exceptional level of customer service they provide customers is reflected in the winning of this fantastic award,” the pair stressed. Olive and Ngaio who own and run ‘Smith & Boston’, their Prebbleton based Fashion Boutique, specialise in elegant ready-to-wear fashion, perfect for special occasions. Olive and Ngaio, who design all the store’s beautiful garments, are proud that they are also made locally in Canterbury. At ‘Smith & Boston’, boutique staff will assist with finding the cut that flatters customer’s figures in a colour that complements their skin, hair and eyes. Olive and Ngaio came up with the name for their business by using family connections from the generations. The label’s name; ‘Smith & Boston’ comes from the combined maiden names of Olive and Ngaio’s maternal grandmother and great grandmother who lived in Prebbleton Village not far from the Smith & Boston boutique. A real family affair.

Local Company New Zealand Vegetable Oil Limited (NZVO) based in Jones Road Rolleston has been producing their wholly New Zealand grown and processed cold pressed rapeseed oil under the brand ‘nZeaola’ (the n is silent) for the past four years. Unlike most other oils nZeaola™ is pressed weekly throughout the year and this ensures maximum freshness. nZeaola™ is obtained from the seed Brassica Napus and if stored under the correct conditions it keeps particularly well. A lot of participants who, after attending Akaroa’s Cooking School, love and use the product on their courses and want to obtain a supply. Al Brown is also a great advocate here in New Zealand with nZeaola™ appearing in his latest book, ‘Get Fresh with Al Brown’.” Al commented, “...I like its relatively neutral flavour in cooking. It has some great qualities, with the lowest saturated fat of all vegetable oils, half the amount that olive oil has. It also has omega 3 and vitamin E, which does its thing as a powerful antioxidant.” nZeaola is produced from specially selected GE free, culinary Oilseed rape stock seed, and grown on in the South Island under the NZVO’s own cropping programme from mid Canterbury to Southland.

The seed is cold pressed once, the temperature in processing does not exceed 40°C hence it is technically an ‘extra virgin oil’ (this is strictly speaking an olive oil term) and by doing so it retains all the naturally occurring nutrients. Unlike imported oils there is no solvent extraction, deodorisation, bleaching or added preservatives. New Zealand Vegetable Oil Limited was founded by Robin and Karen Brooks who registered concern at how bulk oil was being produced internationally and the poor quality of imported oils found on the New Zealand market. Internationally there is concern with the carryover of the solvent used for bulk oil extraction into oil the oil itself and also the by-products of bleaching and deodorisation. Today Robin and Karen’s passion is the production of a truly healthy and versatile New Zealand Oil product. Oil is supplied to customers, which include supermarkets, the hospitality industry, food manufacturers and Bakeries, throughout New Zealand in a variety of pack sizes from 500 ml to 1,000 Litre IBC’s (Intermediate Bulk Container).
Retail outlets in this area include New World, Lincoln, New World Rolleston and Darfield 4 Square.

To the Editors: Recently I was looking out the window of my kitchen and saw a worrying sight. A young woman was wandering along the footpath carrying a supermarket bag, she passed our house and was halfway past the next house, when a little kiddie (seemingly on his own) came zooming along on a small, low, tricycle. He was so low, he would easily have been run over had anyone backed out of their driveway! This is a real concern as I know myself, when backing out slowly, that it would be impossible to see this little person! This is a busy street with many subdivisions close by and lots of traffic, trucks etc. The street is already a concern for people having to cross to the footpath, as there is only one side of the road with a pavement in this area. It is already very difficult to back out onto the road,
having to watch for vehicles flying around the corner and to avoid them hitting you. To get onto the street, without also trying to see such a small child, below your field of vision, would be an impossibility. The woman should have been with this very small child not so far ahead and particularly with her back to the youngster! I see many young parents walking, mostly taking children to school, and some of them do have small ones accompanying them. Others do let these small children go ahead of them, but not with as big a gap as this woman did. I find the possible scenarios very scary. I wonder how to educate young parents, or in fact anyone walking the street with children, about keeping them safe and seen!

Putting The Cost of Income Protection into Perspective
NEW VETS IN ROLLESTON Hours: Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm, Saturday 9am - 1pm
If thirty year old manager, Bill wants to insure his car for $50,000 it will cost him about $630 per year. For Bill to insure $50k of his income until aged 70 it will cost $620 a year. If Bill makes a claim for his car should he write it off, he will get $50k (if it is still current market value) If Bill is unable to work he can claim $50,000 per year until he is aged 70 – a potential payout of $2,000,000! And it is increased to keep pace with inflation. So, for the same cost, is income protection really so costly after all? And can you afford not to have it? If you had an iMoney in the corner of your home dispensing $800 per week I bet you would have it insured along with your iPhone, iPad etc. That iMoney machine is you!!! Without the iMoney, there will be no iPhone or iPad or the ability to buy or maintain ownership of the iHome! There are many options around income protection to make it affordable for you, so give me a call or Ewan or Adam Thompson at Central Insurance, and lets build a plan to protect you and your most valuable asset - your ability to earn!

Consultation is now open on a proposal to develop a new sports and leisure centre at West Melton. The new multipurpose facility would include an indoor sport court space, a public hall, a kitchen, meeting and office space, a Playcentre and Plunket rooms, an indoor court, toilets, showers, a first aid and referee room, entrance, foyer and reception. The proposed site for the facility is the West Melton Domain, to the north of the tennis courts. The existing West Melton community centre is eighty years old. The population of the West M el ton ar ea h as b een growing rapidly and the centre
now serves a population of around 4,500. The existing centre is not big enough to meet the current demand for space. The building would also require earthquake strengthening in the future. The estimated cost of the new facility is $4 million. It is proposed that the building would be funded from a variety of sources, including development contributions, grants, fund raising, contributions from organisations that used the facility, existing community centre funds and a targeted rate on local properties. Two drop in sessions are planned to be held at the Rugby Club Rooms at West Melton
Reserve for people to look at the plans for a new facility, make comments and share ideas. These are being held on: • Wednesday, October 30th from 5:30pm - 8pm • Saturday, November 2nd from 2pm - 4:30pm The drop in sessions are part of the first stage of consultation with the community to gauge the level of support for the project and to seek ideas and feedback. Submission forms and information is available online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/wmcentre and from the West Melton BP station and the Council’s Rolleston Headquarters. Consultation on the proposal closes on Monday Nov18th.

Selwyn District Council has launched a new campaign to remind motorists of the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone. Advertisements and billboards will promote the drive phone free message to Selwyn Residents. Research shows that dialing and talking on a mobile phone while driving can lead to: • Riskier decision making - by affecting the drivers’ judgement and concentration. • Slower reactions - motorists often take longer to respond to traffic signs and road hazards or may completely miss them. • Slower and less controlled braking - brake reaction time is slower, and when drivers do brake, it is with more force and less control which results in a shorter stopping distance between the car in front. • Wandering out of the road lane - drivers are more likely to wander out of their lane when using a mobile phone, even on a straight road with little traffic. • Not being alert to the surroundings - when using a mobile phone, drivers tend to spend less time checking mirrors and observing what’s going on around them. This affects their ability to negotiate traffic safely and anticipate and respond to hazards. It has been illegal for motorists to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving in New Zealand since November 2009. Drivers cannot use a hand-held mobile phone: to make, receive, or
terminate a telephone call; to create, send or read a text message or email; to create, send or view a video message. Breaching these rules incurs a fine of $80 and twenty demerit points. However, Police report that it is still common to see drivers using mobiles on the road. Selwyn District Council, Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commented that, “using a mobile while driving is unsafe and puts the driver, their passengers and other road users at risk. Ngaire continued, “motorists need their hands on the wheel to be able to navigate the road safely. We also encourage people to avoid using a phone at all in a car as motorists need to be able to concentrate on driving without distraction.” The drive phone free campaign encourages motorists to make calls before or after their journey and to either let phone calls go to voice mail or have a passenger take the call. If calls or messages are urgent then drivers should pull over to return the call or read the message. A short survey on mobile phone use has been developed for Selwyn residents. Responses received before November 30th, will go into the draw for a $100 MTA Voucher.
