Yvonne wanted a place where people could come and have a wine, or a beer plus some good food, while enjoying the hot Canterbury days with a view of the Southern AIps. Easter weekend 2O1O the Ngapuarata Vines and Wines Tasting House was officially opened to the public.

Unbeknown at this time was the fact that later the same year, the unforgettable September 4th earthquake would strike.

The epicentre was confirmed at j us t 9O O m etr es fr o m Ngapuarata on Highfield Road, ten kilometres south of Kirwee, where the faultline opened up, and moved the road.

This significant event saw the tasting house renamed ‘Quake Shaken Café’ - a name that initiates many a conversation over a vino.

Quake Shaken Café is a beautiful place to relax, enjoy the views and sample the delicious wines, while enjoying some of the great food on offer.

Local West Melton athlete, B r ie G uller y r ecent ly competed at the GymSports National Championships with the outstanding result of fourth overall in New Zealand.

Brie also attained a Proficiency Medal for passing a mark, set by Gymsports NZ, which must be gained only at the National Championships.

This mark is set extremely high and Brie has every right Brie Gullery reads the Athlete’s oath in front of competitors, to feel very proud of her coaches, judges, dignitaries from GymSports NZ, and Council representatives at the recent GymSports National Championships , creditable result. Her scores held in Napier. being personal highs, achieved in New Zealand, this season.

Brie was also selected out of over four hundred other athletes from Aerobic, Trampolining and Rhythmic Gymnastics codes to read out the Athletes' Oath, at the Phone - 03 322 7770 Opening Ceremony. This was done in front of all competitors, coaches, judges and d ig nit ar ies from GymSports NZ, as well as the Napier City Council. To make it an even more memorable competition for Brie, she also celebrated her sixteenth birthday while there.

At home now, Brie is enjoying some much-deserved rest, while mending from a hopefully minor back injury, prior to preparation for next year and Level 10, the last competitive level in Rhythmic Gymnastics.

Large country gardens, brimming azalea s, m econ opsi s bl ue treasures are ready to delight with flowering rhododendrons, poppies and many other garden crowds for what will be the second Oxford Country Garden Fete and Vintage Fair, held at Ribblesdale Gardens.

Taking place on November 2nd and 3rd, this is a community fundraiser and a chance for business owners to promote their products to wider Canterbury.

Funds raised will be donated to the Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade and Search and Rescue. Support is also going to Ashley Gorge Advisory Board, The Cancer Society, and the Oxford Museum.

The quality stalls situated

amongst the gardens, a plant nursery onsite, delicious food and local musicians set to entertain, will all create a boutique and ambient setting. It really will be an event not to be missed.

This year, stall holders are coming from as far as Auckland and Dannevirke in the north, and Roxburgh and Dunedin in the south, and event organisers, Wendy Doody and Denise Illingworth are busy finalising everything for the quality, destination event. Both of them have worked hard towards organising the day, and they see

it as being a unique, boutique event, as well as a great way to support the community.

Mark the event on the calendar, so the day won’t be missed. Rest assured - rain, hail or shine, the Garden Fete will go ahead as planned.

September’s trip organised by Jenny Stephens definitely had an aviation theme with a visit to the bases of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Airport Rescue Fire Service.

At the Helicopter venue the group received an informative talk from the pilot and paramedic. Members were able to have good look around the helicopter after this.

The seed is cold pressed once, the temperature in processing does not exceed 40°C hence it is technically an ‘extra virgin oil’ (this is strictly speaking an olive oil term) and by doing so it retains all the naturally occurring nutrients. Unlike imported oils there is no solvent extraction, deodorisation, bleaching or added preservatives.

To the Editors: Recently I was looking out the window of my kitchen and saw a worrying sight.

A young woman was wandering along the footpath carrying a supermarket bag, she passed our house and was halfway past the next house, when a little kiddie (seemingly on his own) came zooming along on a small, low, tricycle. He was so low, he would easily have been run over had anyone backed out of their driveway!

This is a real concern as I know myself, when backing out slowly, that it would be impossible to see this little person!

This is a busy street with many subdivisions close by and lots of traffic, trucks etc. The street is already a concern for people having to cross to the footpath, as there is only one side of the road with a pavement in this area. It is already very difficult to back out onto the road,

having to watch for vehicles flying around the corner and to avoid them hitting you. To get onto the street, without also trying to see such a small child, below your field of vision, would be an impossibility.

The woman should have been with this very small child not so far ahead and particularly with her back to the youngster!

I see many young parents walking, mostly taking children to school, and some of them do have small ones accompanying them. Others do let these small children go ahead of them, but not with as big a gap as this woman did. I find the possible scenarios very scary.

I wonder how to educate young parents, or in fact anyone walking the street with children, about keeping them safe and seen!

Another season is under way following the opening of the West Melton Bowling Club on September 21st. President Mike Leigh welcomed all who attended, especially new members Keith McMeekan, McMeekan Steve Davis, Davis Ken Sharplin, Sharplin Don R ed mo nd an d J o an McGinness.

McGinness Allison Pierce had the honour of delivering the first bowl of the season.

On September 28th the Presidents Cup was played.

This is a competition held at the beginning of each season between teams made up of Club members and was won by Ali Gardener, Gardener Phil Rowlands, Rowlands Roger Marshall and Mike Leigh (s).

The period between now and Christmas is going to be a busy one for members.

Centre, Malvern and Club competitions are all under way but if the inclement weather persists it may be difficult to complete all competitions on time.

Consultation is now open on a proposal to develop a new sports and leisure centre at West Melton.

The new multipurpose facility would include an indoor sport court space, a public hall, a kitchen, meeting and office space, a Playcentre and Plunket rooms, an indoor court, toilets, showers, a first aid and referee room, entrance, foyer and reception. The proposed site for the facility is the West Melton Domain, to the north of the tennis courts.

The existing West Melton community centre is eighty years old. The population of the West M el ton ar ea h as b een growing rapidly and the centre

now serves a population of around 4,500. The existing centre is not big enough to meet the current demand for space.

The building would also require earthquake strengthening in the future.

The estimated cost of the new facility is $4 million. It is proposed that the building would be funded from a variety of sources, including development contributions, grants, fund raising, contributions from organisations that used the facility, existing community centre funds and a targeted rate on local properties.

Two drop in sessions are planned to be held at the Rugby Club Rooms at West Melton

Reserve for people to look at the plans for a new facility, make comments and share ideas.

These are being held on: • Wednesday, October 30th from 5:30pm - 8pm • Saturday, November 2nd from 2pm - 4:30pm The drop in sessions are part of the first stage of consultation with the community to gauge the level of support for the project and to seek ideas and feedback.

Zoe McMeeken, McMeeken from Rolleston School recently attended the Inter-Regional CrossCountry Champs in Nelson. Zoe ran in the 9-10 year old division, finishing tenth. It took Zoe just nine minutes to blitz through the 2.2 km course!

Men’s Shed volunteers are looking forward to working with the Mayor and Councillors who have recently been elected.

Members of the Men’s Shed would like to thank Carolyn Dreaver and her brother G r aem e f ro m Cl ass iqu e Furniture for the enormous am oun t of ti mb er an d equipment that they have donated. Projects coming up include; the local Play Centre who have asked the group to draw up some plans, and implement a new shed for the children plus install new shelving in their library.

The Men’s Shed currently have an application in to the Community Trust for funding to help them move their sheds onto land that they are discussing with Council about occupying.

Donations of equipment are still sought, “If you have something

out in the back shed which has not been used for a while and wish to donate to a worthy cause, it would be gratefully accepted,” said Men’s Shed

Selwyn District Council has launched a new campaign to remind motorists of the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone. Advertisements and billboards will promote the drive phone free message to Selwyn Residents.

Research shows that dialing and talking on a mobile phone while driving can lead to: • Riskier decision making - by affecting the drivers’ judgement and concentration.

• Slower reactions - motorists often take longer to respond to traffic signs and road hazards or may completely miss them.

• Slower and less controlled braking - brake reaction time is slower, and when drivers do brake, it is with more force and less control which results in a shorter stopping distance between the car in front.

• Wandering out of the road lane - drivers are more likely to wander out of their lane when using a mobile phone, even on a straight road with little traffic.

• Not being alert to the surroundings - when using a mobile phone, drivers tend to spend less time checking mirrors and observing what’s going on around them. This affects their ability to negotiate traffic safely and anticipate and respond to hazards.

It has been illegal for motorists to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving in New Zealand since November 2009. Drivers cannot use a hand-held mobile phone: to make, receive, or

terminate a telephone call; to create, send or read a text message or email; to create, send or view a video message.

Breaching these rules incurs a fine of $80 and twenty demerit points. However, Police report that it is still common to see drivers using mobiles on the road.

Selwyn District Council, Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commented that, “using a mobile while driving is unsafe and puts the driver, their passengers and other road users at risk. Ngaire continued, “motorists need their hands on the wheel to be able to navigate the road safely. We also encourage people to avoid using a phone at all in a car as motorists need to be able to concentrate on driving without distraction.”
