Over 7,600 people have visited the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre during the first two weeks of its operation.

Selwyn Aquatic Centre manager, Kathy Moore said that the comments from people who have visited the Centre so far, have been incredibly positive.

“Our staff are getting lots of comments about how fantastic the new Centre is, and how great it is to have this facility in Selwyn,” she said.

“It’s a wonderful facility,” commented Selwyn resident Libby Chambers who visited the new Centre with her young son Will.

Kathy Vernimmen, Vernimmen of Rolleston, has also visited the pool three times since it opened and has been using the hydrotherapy pool. “It’s great to have the pool here to use,” she added. “I used to visit a pool in Christchurch, as swimming is a good form of exercise for me and helps with my arthritis. Now I can use a local heated pool instead.”

Despite the Centre being extremely busy, Kathy said staff have been able to provide a

high level of customer service.

Aquafitness classes at the Centre began last week and the timetable for these is available at www.selwyn.govt.nz/sac.

Swim school lessons will begin the week of July 29th and infant and preschool lessons will start

two weeks into term three (midAugust). Families will be contacted in the next two weeks to confirm lesson times.

The last Rolleston Combined Probus Club meeting was timed to coincide with the Club’s eighth birthday. Several visitors from other Clubs were invited to join the celebrations, and there were also representatives from the Northern South Island Probus Associ ation. The celebratory birthday cake was cut by the RCPC’s first president, Esme Humm, Humm and the NSIPA President, Jill Hockley.

Instead of having a speaker at this month’s meeting, Club members were entertained by the Richmond Handbell Ringers, who put on a wonderful performance that was enjoyed by all attending.

“The six bell ringers presented us with some well known tunes,

such as ‘The Rose’, ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Over the Rainbow’, and even the ‘Goodnight Kiwi’ tune. I found it fascinating that some of the performers were able to create a different tone with each bell, sometimes while holding two bells in each hand,” commented Club President, Neil Bennett.

Bennett The craft group within the Club is going well, and there have been several soup and bun lunches held. Interest has also been expressed in establishing a movie group, as well as a sing-along group.

The mid-winter Christmas lunch, held at the Racecourse Hotel, was a huge success, with s even ty n i n e m em b er s attending for a great meal at a

reasonable cost.

The July outing was a trip to the Wigram Airforce Museum complete with a guided tour of the museum, which included where aircraft restoration projects take place.

On the way home the group stopped at the new Rolleston Aquatic Centre to check out all the facilities.

The next RCPC meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th at 9:45am in the Rolleston Community Centre.

Selwyn’s deputy Mayor, Sarah Walters has just announced her intention to stand for Selwyn D i s tr i ct M ayo r i n th e forthcoming elections, voting in which closes on October 12th, 2013. Nominations for all candidates opens on July 26th and closes at noon on August 23rd and voting papers will be delivered between September 20th and 25th Sarah lives at Aylesbury, is 45, married and has two teenage children, she has been a Selwyn Central Ward Councillor since 2007 and the deputy Mayor since 2010.

Sarah considers her attributes to be value and respect for people, plus her ability to work with a wide range of individuals.

She sees herself as being approachable, as well as a team and relationship builder. Add to this the ability to be a strong strategic thinker who’s honest, results-focused, innovative,

practical, realistic and big picture thinker, then Sarah has promoted herself well towards gaining selection.

Sarah has a sound local government knowledge and exper ience and is representative on numerous co m mun i ty and Co un ci l committees, where she works hard for the best outcome.

“My motivation in standing for Council in 2007 was my children (then aged 7 and 9) and the many talented and motivated children across the district,” Sarah said. “I wanted to provide better representation and a brighter future for all of them and 2013 is no different. Olivia Chirnside, on the drums, winner of the Smokefree Award For Women’s Musicianship , It was a big weekend for youth music in Canterbury, with two nights of regional finals in the Smokefree Rockquest, held at the Jack Mann Auditorium (University of Canterbury), on Saturday and Sunday, June 29th and 30th.

While Lincoln High School’s rock band ‘Pure Innocence’ didn’t make it through to the national finals, their drummer, Olivia Chirnside received the Smokefree Award For Women’s Musicianship - an excellent achievement by anyone’s standards!

The group of men involved with Rolleston Men’s Shed (RMS) are in the process of restoring much of the equipment, that has been donated to them. They are extremely thankful to people in the area that have been kind enough to donate these goods.

Anyone with anything that they want to clear out, give the RMS chaps a call, as they are still accepting goods for their organisation.

A generous benefactor has suggested that he may be able to donate quite a substantial amount of equipment as a contribution to their auction.

This auction is set to be held in late November and if anyone is able to donate their proceeds to the organisation, it would be greatly appreciated.

Negotiations with the Selwyn District Council (SDC) are well underway for the land on which to put their shed. The first site suggested would appear to be unsuitable, but there is an offer of another, that looks as though it may be of better use to RMS in the long term. The process will all take some time, but it’s hoped the outcome will be a good one.

Two members of the group are

involved in a project for a local business and have spent many hours fitting out a campervan, which could lead to some more funds being made available to the organisation.

The RMS would like to extend thanks to Rolleston New World, for their ver y generous donation. Roy from Rolleston New World is a great supporter of the local community, and RMS would like to see the community return that support.

In 2008, an initiative was put in place by Greenways ‘Te ara Kákáriki’ and the team at Southern Woods Tree Nursery, encouraging local primary schools to re-introduce native plants back into their district.

Having previously worked with schools in the form of talks, and tours of the Nursery, Southern Woods is pleased to have joined forces with Te ara Kákáriki.

The idea to hold an annual competition for primary schools was hatched in late 2007. “The mandate was to design and plant a garden which was predominantly native. The gardens would then be judged, not wholly on this design, but on the knowledge the students had g ai n ed r e g a r d i n g th e importance of natives, while co mpl eting th e pr oj ect.

“Basically, the students would sell it back to us,” commented Robyne Hyndman of Southern Woods Nursery.

Letters are sent to all local schools at the beginning of each year regarding the competition.

Visits by Nursery staff can be arranged, as well as school or class trips to the Nursery. This is aimed at educating the students in a more ‘hands-on’ manner.

“The majority of students thus far are extremely passionate about environmental issues, and most schools have used

landscaping materials either sourced locally or recycled,” Robyne commented. “The majority have also received donations of plants and planting accessories, and they plan more projects in the future.”

The generosity of the Selwyn District Council (providing prize money vi a th e N atu r al En vi r onm en t Fun d) an d Southern Woods Tree Nursery (providing planting vouchers, visits, tours, and pl ant donations) makes this annual competition possible.

The knowledge of all of the students in the past has been immense and impressive. It is encouraging for the future,

which is the aim of this competition.

“Congratulations go to all students who participated in past competitions as well as those entered into this year’s, or considering it in the future.”

Organisers especially thank all the parents and teachers who have helped and encouraged students with their projects.

Building consent figures for the past year indicate that S e l w y n D i s t r ic t h a s experienced another year of exceptional growth.

Selwyn has been the fastest growing district in New Zealand over the past five years, and last year also experienced the strongest economic growth in New Zealand.

In the year up to June 2013, Selwyn District Council issued a record number of new dwelling consents; 1,084 in total, a 76% increase on the 616 consents issued the previous year.

“Buildin g and resource consent staff have had an incredibly busy year,” said

Mayor Kelvin Coe. “Over Coe twelve thousand building inspections were carried out during the year.”

Consenting staff have been under pressure but the Council is coping, with only a few of the more complicated consents taking more than twenty days.

Resource consent applications also increased by 32% - up from 426 to 562. A fast track c on s e n t proc e s s wa s introduced last year for simple c on sent s wh ic h a llows applicants to receive consents more quickly and at a reduced cost. An increasing number of consents are being processed through this process as more applications are now eligible

The building boom in Selwyn is being matched by an employment boom.

The number of jobs in the district increased by 9.5% last year, nearly ten times the national average of 1%. Selwyn is also home to Izone, New Zealand’s largest business park.

The Mayor commented that Selwyn is a very exciting place to be. “Construction activity in our district is busier than ever and many new businesses are setting up here.”

The Council is focused on investing in infrastructure and services for the growing population. Last month saw the opening of the new Rolleston Aquatic Centre and a new library will open in Lincoln early next year.

South Islanders are being urged to fill brown paper bags with non-perishable food and drop them back to their local New World supermarket as part of a one-week campaign to bolster the supplies in food banks.

More than 110,000 paper bags will be inserted in provincial newspapers throughout the South Island from next week.

Kent Mahon, the New World South Island Group Manager, said that what started as a local Christchurch initiative several years ago, has now gone South Island wide.

“In the last two years we have expanded the appeal by giving customers the opportunity to make cash donations via special boxes located on each of the manned checkouts throughout New World’s stores in the South Island. They proved popular and will be repeated again, this time.

“For those customers who do not receive a bag or wish to donate at the store, they can just bring their non-perishable items to the local New World outlet.

“We understand the important part that food banks play in our community, and that is why, as a group, we are such strong supporters of the initiative,” he said.

If Christchurch is an example, the demand for food parcels throughout the South Island is growing. The number of food parcels given out in Christchurch increased by 34% from 2011 to 2012. More than 28,000 parcels were issued in 2012, an average of 2,357 per month.

The appeal runs from Monday, July 29th until Sunday, August 4th.

Parents, grandparents and siblings were welcomed with a symphony of colour, artistic flare and technical artistry at T e m p l e t o n ’s K i ds f i rs t Kindergarten on Wednesday, July 3rd. Children presented an art exhibition of the work they had been creating during the past term. The children opened the show by singing the New Zealand national anthem in Te Reo Maori and English, followed by a jungle song that went along with one of their exhibition themes.

Exhibition works included close up photos, taken by the children, of everyday items they see around the kindergarten environment.

Self portraits interpreted how children saw themselves. Some had big

smiles, others big eyes, some drew just their faces and others had bodies. Also on display were plaster of Paris hand prints and clay creations.

Head Teacher, Vicki Marsh, Marsh explained “The art show has been a large focus for our kindergarten group this term.

Together with the teachers, children have been involved in planning and creating toward this show. We have noticed a gradual increase in the number of children involved and the intensity and confidence to experiment creatively.”

A recent change in the set up of the creativity area has allowed children to explore a wide range of mediums, either separately or

together. The introduction of a screen printing table has also been popular. “We see so much social interaction and responsibility there, as older children are empowered to help yo u n g er ch i l d r en , an d encourage them to give it a go,” said Vicki. “It has become a very inclusive place to be”.

The exhibition evening allowed children to share their ideas verbally, describing the process taken to make their creations.

They exuberated confidence and pride as they took their family members around the displays.

A very successful and enjoyable evening for children, teachers and whanau.

The whole year 5 & 6 boys Jump Jam team, getting some practise in, to fine-tune their routine.

Rolleston School have recently had a fair amount of su cce s s at t he preliminary rounds of the Jump Jam Competition.

Their Year 3 to 5 team was placed fourth, Year 5 and 6 team sixth, and their Year 7 and 8 team, came in third.

While these results were outstanding, the s u pe rs t a r s of t h e competition were the Year 5 and 6 boys’ team who took out first place in their division. All of these teams were lucky enough to make it though to the Regional Competition, which will be held in Lincoln, next term.

The eight boys in the Year 5 and 6 team trained every Wednesday morning before school, as well as every Friday at lunchtime. The judges and coaches were thrille d with the performance, and this was reflected in their first preliminary round placing.

They are striving to do their very best with the hope of making the finals in Auckland later this year.

Many parents and children of the Rolleston community will be familiar with Lorraine Martin.

Martin Lorraine has just finished, her twenty-eight year career as the mainstay of Rolleston School.

Throughout her time at Rolleston School, Lorraine has reassured and comforted sick and injured children, assisted with enrolments, liaised with parents and kept them well informed keeping everything running smoothly.

Rolleston School wish to thank Lorraine for all her hard work.

Our awesome Jump Jammers spent a large amount of the their free time making and delivering over five hundred cups of jelly. We raised around $500 for our entry fees. This successful and fun day was organised by Jump Jam head teacher Jen Bailey, Bailey who gave up a lot of her time to ensure this day was a success. The Jump Jammers and staff at Rolleston School would like to thank Rolleston New World who donated around one hundred and fifty packets of jelly. We couldn't have done it without them .

Anyone looking to join a sports club, get some exercise or find a new hobby, it’s now a lot easier to find out what options are available in Selwyn.

A new online directory is available for residents listing sport and recreation activities in their area. The directory includes over 180 listings and covers a wide variety of activities including: Team sports like netball, cricket, rugby, softball and football.

Dancing, skiing, golf, horse riding, bowls, swimming, archery and shooting. Add to this, martial arts, yoga, walking groups, gymnastics plus many other options. Local sports facilities and a number of classes are also included in the directory.

The directory can be searched by entering the name of a township in Selwyn or by entering the type of activity people want information on. The directory lists contact information for the club, activity or facility, a description of what is offered and a website listing, if this is available.

The Council’s Community Recreation Advisor, Ginny Bowden, who co-ordinated the development of the directory, commented that it would help people living in Selwyn to be active. “We have many new people moving to Selwyn who would like to join a sports team, or are keen to find out about what recreational activities are happening in their area for themselves or for their children.

Until now it has been difficult for people to get an overview of what recreation options are available to them.”

She added that as Selwyn has grown, the range of activities being offered within the district has also increased and many existing residents may not be aware of new activities now available in Selwyn.

Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, 'Steve's Place,' and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.

It seemed a little strange.

When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, “why the spoon?”

“Well,” he explained, “the restaurant's owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately three spoons per table per hour.”

“If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save fifteen man-hours per shift.”

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. “I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.” I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly, and looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, “excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?”

“Oh, certainly!” Then he lowered his voice. “Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom. By tying this string to the tip of our youknow-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%.
