NO IDLE HANDS FOR THESE LADIES !!!
The Day Club Knitting Group. For the last 2-3 years some of the ladies from the day club have been knitting for ‘Operation Cover Up’, which is part of Missions without Borders organisation. Noeline Bowis first made contact with this group through a family connection. And together with Marion Turner, they have motivated others within the Day Club group to start knitting. Marion cast on the stitches for the ladies who soon picked up the thread and from there and the needles started clicking. The ladies knit the wool into strips and Marion crotchets them all together to make the most amazing, warm blankets. This is a
year long project with the result, the ladies have made over 12 blanket, together with singlet's, scarves and beanies. All this get collected in mid-August with others from around the Canterbury Region and sent by container to Eastern Europe. The group source their wool mainly from opshops, undoing old jerseys and buying the wool themselves so they would appreciate any donations of wool especially double knitting wool. You can either contact Marion on 324 4441 or drop off wool on a Day Club Tuesday.

The year was 1922, and New York City was one gigantic party. It was a time of decadence, bootlegging and jazz. Bohemian women danced until their ‘flapper’ dresses unravelled and ‘bath tub gin’ flowed like water. This year, Ellesmere College will be presenting a drama that will not only take its audience back to the ‘roaring 20’s’ but allow them to experience and understand it through a modern lens. This year, with our own twist, Ellesmere College presents The Great
Gatsby.
This year’s production sets itself aside from previous productions held within college for two main reasons. The primary difference in 2013’s production is that it is student lead. The year 13 Performance Development class took hold of the reigns this year with guidance from the College’s drama teacher, Tracey Dwyer. The students have taken on significant roles in making the production happen such as directing, advertising, costume and lighting design as well as main acting roles. This class of students being described as the “core group”, alongside Mrs Dwyer, began putting hours of their time into the production right from the beginning of the school year and in only two weeks they, along with the community will see it all come together in only three shows. The second reason this production sets itself aside from those of previous years is the students have opted for a challenge in taking on the literary classic, The Great Gatsby. Unlike productions of the past, The Great Gatsby is not a musical. Rather, it includes performances and music to enrich the scenes instead of being the sole focus. The show will take place
‘The Guys’ on the left and Felicity Newburry on the right. on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of July, opening with a ‘red carpet premier’ on the 2nd of July. There will be complimentary drinks and nibbles available as well as a fun; free of charge photo booth with dress up’s only for one night at the red carpet premier. Those of us at Ellesmere College hope to see the community come along and witness the first production brought to the stage that has been developed in a whole new way where students take the lead, providing a unique performance, different from everything that has gone before. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It all happened again….. Water levels just out of control in the O’Connell Street area of Southbridge. How sick we are of it, but these rains were just unstoppable and whatever the council have done to prevent the flooding in the past, nothing has worked. We would like to thank yet again the Southbridge fire brigade, Andy Bailey, for their pumps and all the helpers that checked on the area for us all in O’Connell Street. We were so grateful of the help and your concerns. We hope the council will try to solve this huge problem somehow sooner than later. T and R Rouxel

THE CO-OPERATING PARISH WELCOMES THE DELA CRUZ FAMILY The Ellesmere Cooperating Parish would like to introduce you to the Dela Cruz family of Leeston! Orland, Teena and their son A.J. live and work on a local dairy farm. They originally come from the Philippine Islands. Teena and Orland were on the staff of a church in the Philippines, where Orland led the worship as a competent musician and singer, and Teena led the women’s ministry. Since being in Leeston they have been active members of St. David’s Cooperating Church. After they arrived here, Teena and Orland quickly gathered together an increasing number of other people who have moved to the district from the Philippines. Under Teena’s very competent leadership, they have been providing a weekly homebased gathering, pastoral care and a monthly worship service at St. David’s church on a Friday evening. People come from as far away as Geraldine and Christchurch City to enjoy this inspiring community dynamic. People from other cultures, including some “Locals”, are also finding their ministry helpful and inspiring.
The Ellesmere Cooperating Parish is extremely grateful for the Dela Cruz family and other Filipino members who are contributing so powerfully to the work of the church. This ministry, with the name, “Leeston Lifetouch Fellowship” is an integral part of St. David’s Church, Leeston. To acknowledge the value of this ministry, at our church service on Sunday 30 June, we inducted Teena into the position of Pastor (Filipino – “Pastora”) with special responsibility for the leadership of the Lifetouch Fellowship. A huge crowd of people from the local district and wider Canterbury area, including a large proportion of the Canterbury Filipino community, attended the celebration of Teena’s appointment. If you would like to experience something of Teena and Orland’s ministry, you are welcome to attend a Lifetouch Fellowship worship service at St. David’s Church, Leeston, held on the last Friday of each month at 7.30pm. You will experience A.J. on the drums, others playing guitar and singing, Teena delivering one of her powerful biblical messages in both English and Tagalog, and delicious Filipino food – a cross-cultural experience on your backdoor step, without the costof overseas travel!
SOUTHBRIDGE GARDEN CLUB REPORT Annual General Meetings of the Southbridge Garden Club are usually not well patronised but the latest one in June saw a reasonable number of members in attendance. There were just enough people to ensure all the essential posts were filled when it came time for the election of officers, the spread for lunch was tasty and extensive and they brought enough competition entries to represent all the classes except one. The meeting itself was fairly brief and the only decision of magnitude was the increase of subscriptions to $10 annually with a reminder that these subs are now due. Competition prizes were awarded to Isabel Cooper
for most points in Open Decorative and Lorraine Rasmussen scooped the pool by winning Novice Decorative; Flowers, Fruit and Vegetables; as well as the most points overall. Lorraine was also presented with a small token of everyone’s appreciation for the four years she has put in as secretary. She will be replaced by Moira Dodgshun who will be assisted by Shirley Fisher. All other positions remain the same but Kasheen Walker has now joined the committee ranks. Terry and Lyn Windle joined the members for lunch and then earned their keep by judging the table competitions before Terry settled into his role of
speaker. A mountain of very valuable knowledge about growing vegetables was imparted by Terry and copious notes were taken about best varieties, planting times, compost composition, feeding routines, etc and this was followed by even more questions. This augers well for the vegetable section of the table competitions this year as long as the ladies can remember where all those notes are kept. Isabel Cooper also demonstrated a floral design to signify ‘Winterlights’ which is the theme for July’s competition. There will be a speaker from The Company Shed and the meeting will be held on the 8th at the usual time of 1.30pm in the church hall.

THE OPEN HOME FOUNDATION NEEDS YOU!! Open Home Foundation is a Christian social service which provides home based social work and foster care for families who are struggling to provide safe care for their children. Our vision is that ‘every child in
NZ will receive a depth of care that will bless them for the rest of their life’ – physically, emotionally and spiritually. The organisation was established in 1977 by Ewen and Gillian Laurenson. Following their difficult experience in running a Social Welfare family home, they began to develop a network of Christian Foster families as an alternative for children and young people placed in Department of Social Welfare care. The work began in the Laurenson's Johnsonville home with a small group of supporters and within a short period of time, it began to develop in other parts of New Zealand. In 1986, because of rapid growth, Open Home Foundation became a national organisation and both Ewen and Gillian were awarded the Queen's Service Medal for their service to Foster Care in New Zealand in 1995. Families may need to be supported to safely care for their children for a number of reasons. Stress, mental health issues, domestic violence, drug & alcohol issues, homelessness, abuse & neglect and disability
are just a few of the factors which can contribute to the breakdown of a family’s ability to provide adequate safe care for their children. In many instances the family simply needs to be supported to make the changes necessary in order to safely care for their children. Even with a high level of support however, there are times when it becomes necessary for children and young people to leave the care of their parents. Wherever possible this care is undertaken by kin. Where this is not possible foster care can be provided for a short time as respite or on a longer term or permanent basis if necessary. Open Home Foundation believes that families, and preferably a child or young person’s own family or whanau, are the best place for a young person to grow. We therefore make every effort to place a child requiring foster care with a member of their own extended family before exploring any other options. Since the earthquakes we have seen a significant rise (17%) in the numbers of children being referred for care and protection (Ministry of Social Development). Families have been stressed in so many different ways
and this has been made all the more difficult by a lack of support as friends and relatives have moved away and communities have changed. With this increase in referrals there is now also an urgent need for additional support. We require more foster parents, prayer support, and financial sponsorship to provide for the needs of the children (swimming lessons, music tuition, furniture and holiday camps) as well as financial assistance to provide the resources needed to serve the community in this way (additional social workers, cost of running cars and transport for children). We are very keen to share our story with the wider community and invite people in Canterbury to consider partnering with us in this local mission work by providing prayer support, sponsorship and by stepping up to provide foster care for a few days to give long term carers a break or on a longer term basis. We provide on-going training, 24 hour support and financial reimbursement to all our foster carers. They are the heart of our organisation.

WATER - WATER, EVERYWHERE AND ? REPORT FROM CHIEF FIRE OFFICER - NOEL ( SAM ) THIAN The Leeston Brigade were kept busy on the 19th June. Their first call was on the Wednesday night just as they had finished playing cards against the Southbridge Brigade. They were then kept busy through that night and well into Thursday. That’s when the creek that runs through the township burst its banks and flooded areas of the township such as, Mountain Veiw Place, Spring Place, Selwyn Street, and the main street. There were also calls to Doyleston in amongst all that. Fortunately a lot of the water had receded by late Friday. Then another deluge of rain set in later that night resulting in severe flooding on the Saturday, the worst that had been seen since 1992. The level of the town creek rose again and so it was back to square one. This time the flooding not only hit the initial places but extended to Harmans Road. The Brigade was ‘flat tack’, with sand bagging, lifting furniture, appliances, putting out a fire that had started in a freezer. You name it the Brigade did it. The help we got from the community was first class, they pitched in by filling sand bags, following the engines around to drop them off in Doyleston and
Leeston. We had to call in reinforcements from Darfield, Rolleston and Dunsandel so that we could have a breather. We would like to express our thanks to those Brigades. Civil Defence from Christchurch arrived to pitch in and were filling sandbags at Ellesmere Transport. As soon as they were filled they were being used around the district including Tai Tapu. Our thanks too, to Ellesmere Transport, Civil Defence and Leeston Seeds for supplying the 100’s of sacks, and to the helpers and shop personal in Leeston that supplied food and drink and helped out at the station, feeding the Brigade and the many extra people that had arrived. We cannot begin to name people individually as there were so many, so please accept this as a heart-felt thanks for all you did. It was over and above what we expected. The number of calls we attended was well over a hundred over the flood days. From people that h a d wa t e r f lo w in g through their homes and had to be evacuated. The towns sewerage
system was also flooded which lead to the complication of people unable to use their toilets. There was damage done to the fire stations carpets so these have been lifted and will be replaced. Last but by no means least to the members of the Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade, you did a fantastic job and held up well in the extreme circumstances. The comments I have had back from the community were first class. Well done. You served the community well in what you did. I wonder if the council was more pro-active and fixed the problem outside the town boundary that events like this would be minor or not at all.
MAYOR THANKS COMMUNITY FOR HELP Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe is acknowledging the community, volunteers, businesses and Council staff who helped over the past days during the flooding and snows which affected the district. “It was great to see volunteers, businesses and the Council working together to respond to the weather and help keep the community operating,” he says. Volunteer fire services helped with placing sandbags in areas where flooding was a problem and by responding to callouts. Community response teams of civil defence volunteers helped in their areas, and many local residents and businesses also helped out their community, and supported friends, family and neighbours. Council contractors and Council staff were kept busy last week and over the weekend responding to calls and running the C o u n cil’s Eme rg e n cy Operations Centre. Christchurch City Council and Waimakariri District
Council also assisted staff in Selwyn with personnel and equipment. “It was also pleasing that people heard the warnings about the potential for snow before it occurred and had made sure they were prepared,” says Mayor Coe. All wastewater systems are now operating as normal and residents in these areas no longer need to reduce toilet flushing or water consumption. Flooding and snow has also affected the roading network in Selwyn. A number of roads have been left with potholes or other damage as a result of this. Council contractors will be working to repair these problems, and repairs will be ongoing over the winter. Anyone who has been affected by flooding or storms who would like welfare assistance or advice should contact the Council on 03 347 2800 or 03 318 8338. Potholes and road repairs can also be reported using these phone numbers.

WATER PRESSURE RELIEVED WITH THE OPENING OF LAKE ELLESMERE/TE WAIHORA Environment Canterbury staff have reopened Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere to the sea this morning in a second attempt after high tide and heavy seas closed the opening made yesterday. “The connection will be monitored throughout the day and staff and machinery will remain on standby in case the conditions cause the lake to shut once again,” says Leigh Skerten, Environment Canterbury Senior Engineering Advisor. “There is still a large swell of about three metres at the opening site with a southerly front approaching; this could potentially close the connection again like it did last night.” Approximately 80m of shingle was washed into the cut at high tide last night, blocking the connection. This is nothing out of the ordinary and attempts at opening the lake can often take two to three days to be fully successful if the seas are calm. Ms Skerten says the lake can close in a southerly or large swell, requiring Environment Canterbury to open it again. “While technically we can
say the lake is open once a connection is made to the sea, the cut can actually take a few days to scour out and fully develop. It can close at any time during this stage; the sea will progressively close the channel over time in any event, it’s a natural process.” To make the channel a cut approximately 15m wide and approximately 1.8m deep is made. The length of the channel can vary from 100 to 300 metres, on this occasion it was 240m. “We don’t usually declare the lake open publically until it survives two high tides,” explains Ms Skerten “It is very changeable situation that, especially in current circumstances, needs regular monitoring.” Many things need to line up for an opening to be successful: the lake needs to have reached minimum levels in the Water Conservation Order; machinery needs to be mobilised and able to gain safe access to the site which heavy seas can restrict. In the first stage of the opening, machinery needs to be able to work safely within and adjacent to the lake; the final stage machinery
needs to able to work safely in the surf zone. Once the cut is opened it needs time to develop and remain open which is reliant on a relatively calm sea. With no further significant rainfall and if the channel from Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere stays open, it should help ease the flooding around the margin of the lake. Local MP offers support to Selwyn residents affected by flooding. Local MP Amy Adams has offered her support to those affected by flooding in the Selwyn District. “The very high rainfall over the past week has taken its toll on our region, particularly in Leeston over the weekend and now in Motukarara,” Ms Adams said. “I am staying in close contact with the Selwyn District Council and local Civil Defence coordinators and I understand that they, along with ECan, are doing all they possibly can to alleviate the situation.” “I encourage anyone affected by the flooding who feels they need additional support to contact my office in Templeton,” Ms Adams said.

RED SOCK DAY Keeping thousands of small feet warm this winter, with Sir Peter Blake’s lucky red socks, is the dream of two high-profile New Zealand charities that are joining forces for this year’s Red Socks Day. Over the next three weeks, the Sir Peter Blake Trust and KidsCan will be running a special campaign called ‘Wear a pair, share a pair’. The idea is that, for $10, Kiwis will be able to purchase two pairs of Red Socks, one pair to wear themselves for Red Socks Day on 12 July, and a pair to share with a KidsCan child in need. Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO, Shelley Campbell, says, “Every year on Red Socks Day, we celebrate a time when an entire nation came together, and wore their Red Socks, to support Sir Peter and Team New Zealand to win the America’s Cup. This year we wanted to be able to share that incredible story, with a whole new generation of young Kiwis, to inspire them to stand tall and dare to achieve their dreams, just like Sir Peter did.” Julie Chapman, KidsCan CEO and a 2008 Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Award winner, said it was fantastic to be working with the Trust to provide Red Socks to children at KidsCan schools around the country.
“We’re hoping that Kiwis will once again band together for a great cause, and buy a pair of Red Socks, as part of the ‘Wear a pair, share a pair’ campaign, as there are so many KidsCan kids who would love a pair of Red Socks this winter. We’re really excited to be teaming up the Sir Peter Blake Trust to also share with our schools Sir Peter’s inspiring story of aiming high and achieving your dreams against all odds,” added Chapman. ‘Wear a pair, share a pair’ Red Socks can be purchased for $10 from the Sir Peter Blake Trust website www.sirpeterblaketrust.org - until 11 July. Red Socks will be delivered to selected KidsCan schools ahead of Red Socks Day on 12 July. Red Socks Day concludes the annual Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week, which runs from 5-12 July. For more details on how your school, community group or organisation can get involved with Leadership Week events, please vist www.sirpeterblaketrust .org. SUSTAINABLE RECREATIONAL FISHING Since February, North Canterbury Fish & Game’s Steve Terry has been one of 66 participants engaged in securing the future of recreational fishing in New Zealand. The ‘Fishin Future Search’ project recognised that the need for recreational fishers to work together, towards the promotion and protection of responsible fishing, is even more imperative TODAY. Terry, who is responsible for salmon and trout management in North Canterbury, believes this new body offers significant benefits to Fish & Game, as “salmon spend most of their life in the ocean, before returning to fresh water to spawn and create a new life cycle.” This is a unique opportunity to be involved in developing positive change in all aspects of the marine ecosystem. He says “This is the starting point for developing a blue print for sustainable recreational fishing advocacy for all marine species and all New Zealanders.” Mr Terry, a member of the steering committee also stated that it was important to be involved because as a Fish & Game field officer “I am not only interested in the sustainability of the fresh water sports fishery, but also the marine environment as I am a passionate recreational angler.” Don Boddie, Chair of the steering committee says “Our first objective was to publish a report, recording the journey leading up to the Nelson conference and to outline to our fishing communities, the shared vision for the future and the way forward agreed at Nelson”. “We will participate in the proposed discussion
that the Minister has signalled in the media last week; concerning the state of the Snapper fishery in Auckland and the Bay of Plenty,” says Boddie. T h e ‘F i sh in F u tu re ’ Search project will encompass all user groups including shell fish harvesting, spear fishermen, sports fishermen, and those interested in food gathering. The findings will also benefit tourism, and many other ocean based activity providers. You can access the FishinFuture Search project and their report on www.fishinfuturesearc h.co.nz” For more information, please contact Fish & Game South Island Communications Advisor, Andrew Currie, 021 646245, acurrie@fishan dgame.org.nz CONTACT: North Canterbury Fish & Game Ph: +64(21)646245 Email: acurrie@fishandgame.org.nz

CONCERN FOR THE VULNERABLE DURING WEATHER EVENT
CULTIVATION & EXCAVATION CONTRACTORS
With the continuing bad weather throughout the region, Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management group is working with local authorities and other agencies in the area to provide what help is needed. “There have been no declared of state of emergencies,” says Canterbury Region Group Controller Neville Reilly, “But we are reminding people to stay safe and check on their neighbours if they can; especially if they are elderly or vulnerable. “One of our main concerns is the welfare of those people in earthquake damaged housing. In some areas conditions have improved overnight so this may be a chance for people to check on others and on property.” However, if weather conditions are still hazardous people are urged to follow local advice and heed all warnings in regards to road safety and the like. The main Alpine passes and high country roads remain closed and there are swell warnings for the South Canterbury Coast due to the possibility of coastal inundation. The Metservice long term forecast is for another cold but dry front early next week with very low temperatures predicted for tonight and Saturday night which is
likely to bring more heavy snow to parts of Canterbury above 300m. Mr Reilly reminds people to listen to the radio, or check their local council website for updates of conditions in their area; if they need the assistance of Police, Fire or ambulance, to call 111.

EXPLORING ART COURSES Exploring Art Courses: In a bid to try to boost our member numbers and get new blood and young ideas into the Art group we will be running a 4 week art course in the evenings during July/ August. These courses will be run during the hours of 7 9pm in the Leeston Cooperating Parish Hall and jointly tutored by Jill Lemon and Averil Southward with other members of our Ellesmere Art group also joining us to give their knowledge of various art forms. We invite anyone who has maybe thought they would like to try their hand at art but just not had the encouragement to take the next step to come along. Jill and Averil will endeavour to teach what they know and have learnt, whether it be acrylics, pastels, watercolour or mixed media. The first evening we will be working with acrylics and will do a different media on each of the evenings. The aim is to have fun and be relaxed, with no expectations. With assistance towards
costs from Creative NZ, we are able to ask a minimum charge per evening of $3 per person. Materials will be supplied, but if you already have some art supplies of your own then please bring these along with you. Booking is not required - just turn up on the night. If enough interest is shown then the Art group will consider making these art evenings a regular fortnightly get together on our schedule. So write these dates down now in your diary Tuesday July 16th, Tuesday July 23rd. Tuesday July 30th and Tuesday August 5th from 7 - 9pm in the Leeston Co-op Parish Hall, High Street, Leeston. Any enquiries please contact either Jill Lemon ph: 3243922 or Averil Southward ph: 3242118. See Public Notices on page 19 in this issue for the classes.

NEW ONLINE SPORT AND RECREATION DIRECTORY LAUNCHED If you’re looking to join a sports club, get some exercise or find a new hobby, it’s now a lot easier to find out what your options are in Selwyn. A new online directory is now available for residents listing sport and recreation activities in their area. The directory includes over 180 listings and covers a wide variety of activities including: · team sports like netball, cricket, rugby, softball and football · dancing · skiing · golf · horse riding · bowls · swimming · archery and shooting It also covers martial arts, yoga, walking groups, gymnastics and many other
different options. Local sports facilities and a number of classes are also included in the directory. The directory can be searched by entering the name of a township in Selwyn or by entering the type of activity people want information on. The directory lists contact information for the club, activity or facility, a description of what is offered and a website listing, if this is available. The Council’s Community Recreation Advisor Ginny Bowden, who coordinated the development of the directory, says that it will help people living in Selwyn to be active. “We have many new people moving to Selwyn who would like to join a sports team or find out about what recrea-
tion activities are happening in their area for themselves or for their children, but until now it has been difficult for people to get an overview of what recreation options are available to them.” She says that as Selwyn has grown the range of activities being offered within the district has also increased and many existing residents may not be aware of new activities now available in Selwyn. Groups wanting to list their activity in the directory can email joy.farrington@selwyn. govt.nz. To use the free directory visit www.Selwyn.govt.nz/ sportsdirectory.
