The foot bridge was built to enable the Sisters of Mercy nuns from the St Johns Convent in Darfield to cross a water race to reach the St Joseph’s Catholic Church on Telegraph Road, which was established in 1888.

Local residents say they were shocked to discover the bridge had been removed and upset they were not consulted on its removal or given the opportunity to repair it if it was deemed unsafe. Darfield resident Barbara Clinton told the Malvern Community Board at its June meeting that

in 1896 her Great Great Grandfather Peter Clinton donated two acres of land for the purpose of building a school. She said on the land was a four-roomed cottage, which was part of the convent and used by the Sisters of Mercy who taught at the school.

“A bridge was erected for the use of the Catholic community to have access from the school and convent to the church. It is part of the historic fabric of Darfield,” she said. continued on page 7 …

Events centre for West Melton a step closer u by Kent Caddick

A proposed multi-purpose events centre for West Melton has taken a step closer to reality with the Selwyn District Council beginning to put together a needs analysis report for the centre, ear-marked for the township’s domain.

The council is also in the process of putting together a steering committee for the project after recently completing a feasibility study on the events centre concept. The committee will include members from the district council, Selwyn Community Board, council staff, and representatives of interested local groups including the sporting bodies which currently use the domain.

While the project is in its infancy the events centre could also include an upgraded community facility to replace the ageing West Melton Community Hall.

Selwyn Community Board chair Liz Russell says the events centre proposal is an exciting concept.

“It has really been born out of the need to cope with the higher than expected growth West Melton is facing,” she says.

“This growth has been brought about by the Christchurch earthquakes and the displacement this has caused to many city homeowners who see West Melton as a great option.

“The township is also facing a change in its population base from being principally a rural settlement to

one which has a more urban resident.”

She says West Melton’s community hall, while having served the community magnificently over the years, is now getting to its used-by-date.

“The hall is a very popular venue being used for everything from sporting events, to cultural activities and even weddings.

“It has also been well used by the school and the need to give the school a more appropriate venue is one of the drivers for the events centre. The school is desperate for a facility of this kind.”

The current hall would also require some seismic upgrading in the near future.

The proposed events centre is likely to become both a cultural and sporting hub for the growing West Melton community.

Mrs Russell says it is too early to tell exactly what the facility would entail but is urging locals to have their say on the proposal once it goes out for public consultation.

“What the community tells us they want will have a large bearing on what the events centre will eventually look like.” ¢

The Selwyn mayoralty race has another entrant with Deputy Mayor Sarah Walters announcing her candidacy.

Walters’ hat will be thrown in the ring at the October elections alongside incumbent Kelvin Coe, Malvern Ward councillor Sam Broughton and intellectually disabled community campaigner Dr Olive Webb.

Walters, a two-term Selwyn Central Ward councillor and mother of two from Aylesbury, says her motivation for standing her 2013 is the same as when she first stood for council.

“My motivation in standing for council in 2007 was my children, then aged 7 and 9, and the many talented and motivated children across the district. I wanted to provide better representation and a brighter future for all of them.

“My experience as a mother and councillor with younger children has highlighted to me the importance of having this perspective at the council table.

“Seeking a bright future for our children is beneficial to all residents and ratepayers, as it requires good leadership as well as supporting our whole community to ensure everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

“Resolving current issues rather than leaving them to become problems for the future is also important.”

Walters believes Selwyn is in a very strong position despite the issues which have challenged Canterbury over the last term. “Selwyn has a lot to offer. Maintaining and building relationships within the organisation, within the district, throughout the region, nationwide and internationally will ensure Selwyn is well placed for the future.”

Walters chaired the Aquatic Facility Steering Group, responsible for the design stage of the newly opened Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston and is a council representative on the Greater Christchurch Passenger Transport Advisory Group.

Nominations for this year’s local body elections open on July 26 and close on August 23. Voting papers will be delivered in late September with voting closing at noon on October 12. ¢

Volunteers shine through the wet u by Mayor Kelvin Coe

Following the recent earthquakes, the Selwyn District Council has decided to change its Civil Defence structure from a team of people capable of being deployed to any particular area, to supporting Community Response teams who live in their area and are ‘on the spot’ locally in the event of any emergency.

The recent flooding and snow demonstrated the importance of volunteers in our communities during difficult circumstances. Volunteer fire brigades and community response teams are always the first responders in an emergency and did great work in the community once again.

Volunteer fire brigades responded to callouts and helped with sandbagging.

Their work was impressive and it was great to see local businesses, contractors and other individuals supporting their efforts with catering, equipment and whatever else was needed. Community response teams (35 of them) were also hard at work. These teams are made up of local people in townships and rural

areas whose role is to gather information on the state of their area, check on the welfare of people and report to Council so that help can be arranged.

They also help out in their communities.

This was the first widespread emergency in which we have used community response teams. From the Council’s perspective their work was invaluable.

It helped us to identify which communities were coping with the challenges of the weather, which areas needed assistance and what kind of help was required. I’m sure local communities also p Mayor Kelvin Coe appreciated their work.

In addition to the volunteer fire brigades and the community response teams, there were many other groups and individuals who helped out in their communities who should also be acknowledged. Thankyou all — showing your care for your community helps make Selwyn such a great place to live.

While deciding what I would write about in this my first column for The Record, I started reflecting on the parallels between the evolution of this newspaper and the changing face of Selwyn as the district continues to expand.

It is great to see The Record growing as Selwyn grows. It is a big commitment to produce a weekly publication and I admire the hard work and dedication of the owners of community newspapers, who work tirelessly to provide a forum for local events and issues to be aired.

I am sure the expanded p Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn distribution will be well received by households in Rolleston and surrounding areas and I see it as a reflection of the growth and evolution of Selwyn. As more people and businesses move to our district, our identity is continuing to evolve and we are becoming a centre for all sorts of industry, including the arts, and not just a small district on the outskirts of Christchurch.

Around Selwyn, all sorts of new facilities are springing up, such as the new police station in Rolleston and the recently opened Aquatic Centre. Alongside this, we have additional schools planned for Rolleston and Lincoln to accommodate our region’s growing population of families.

We are also starting to see positive signs of progress in our recovery from the devastating earthquakes of the past few years. The EQR home repair programme has reached the halfway point, with repairs on over 50% of Canterbury’s 80,000 earthquake-damaged homes now complete and another 69 homes being finished every day. While there is still much to be done, it is encouraging to now see some real progress.

Rolleston speedster in line for world champs

It’s a need for speed which spins the wheels of Rolleston’s champion inline skater Mark MacDonald.

The 19-year-old is packing his bags and heading to Oostende in Belgium as part of the New Zealand team taking part in the 2013 World Speed Skating Championships running from August 23 to 31.

MacDonald has been skating since the age of six and this will be his third world championships but his last as a junior.

“When I first took up the sport with the rest of the family it just felt really good to go fast,” MacDonald says.

And go fast he has, enjoying considerable success through the grades. He still holds a number of New Zealand banked track records from primary and juvenile age grades.

But the shorter sprinting distances are not his forte because as he says “it takes me a while to get going.”

MacDonald specialises in the longer distances, both on the track and the road, and at the worlds will be competing in the 10k, 20k and marathon (42km) as well as being part of the New Zealand relay team.

He says they will be up against the best in the world, with Colombia and Korea two of the leading nations, but hopes to at least finish in the top ten in each of his events, and a podium finish is not out of the question.

MacDonald trains around two hours a day using both the Sockburn skating rink and the Carrs Road go-kart track, as well as spending plenty of time in the gym. He will also be heading to Belgium

That funding boost has come at an opportune time as MacDonald has recently been made redundant and when he returns from Belgium will be without a job.

Like many minority sports in New Zealand, funding is always an issue.

“Only a couple of our top senior riders get any sort of Government funding while other countries like Colombia and Korea are fully funded and their teams will have a full complement of coaches, doctors and physios,” MacDonald says.

Consequently he and his family have raised most of the funding needed for him to compete both in New Zealand and overseas.

MacDonald says he was delighted to receive some additional funding support from the Selwyn Community Board to assist him with his latest overseas foray. The board agreed to support MacDonald to the tune of $1000 for his world championship bid.

School’s equestrian fundraiser comes to town Darfield High School is taking its annual rural college fundraiser to the city this year.

This year’s Equestrian Rogaine fundraiser will be held on Sunday, August 4, and competitors will ride the trails and roads at Bottle Lake Forest in Burwood.

This will be the second time the school has run a rogaine on horseback with the first held at Springfield in April 2012 and believed to be an Australasian first.

The 2012 event attracted almost 100 entries and was won by the Zydenbos family foursome of Rick, Sue, Luke (then 13) and Leah (then 11) from Halkett.

For this year’s event, teams of two to four, on horseback, will navigate using a map with checkpoints marked

on it. The checkpoints have differing points values and teams will collect points by visiting as many checkpoints as possible in the time available. The team with most points wins.

Organiser, Carol Fowler of West Melton, who rides herself and has competed in many foot rogaines, says the flat terrain at Bottle Lake will be suitable for both hacks and ponies.

“This should ensure the event is family friendly,” she says.

French Horn concert planned

After a successful solo recital at the Nut Point Gallery in March, David MuellerCajar is polishing his performance of two French horn concertos, Mozart’s 4th and Strauss’ 1st, for a concert on Saturday, July 20 at Trinity Church, Darfield.

The former Darfield High School is no stranger to Malvern audiences who have previously heard the young horn player, most notably at Malvern Community Arts Council concerts.

David earned a first-class honours degree from the University of Canterbury, continued his studies for two years with Michael Hoeltzl at the University of Theatre and Music in Rostock, Germany and was awarded the Diplom-Musiker. After a brief engagement as 1st horn with the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra in America, he returned to New Zealand and is presently an occasional horn player with both the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Southern Symphony of New Zealand (Dunedin).

Board wants our bridge back “As a fifth generation descendant of Peter Clinton I am passionate about preserving what little heritage and character Darfield has left.

Therefore I feel the only option is to have the bridge returned to its rightful place outside the convent.”

The convent is now a private home and current owner Donna Storer and her family used the bridge, which is on council owned land, to go to church every Sunday and for other church care activities.

“I believe the bridge has significant value as part of Darfield’s heritage,” Mrs Storer said.

“As users of the bridge we always had a sense of pride in its presence and value in the church’s history. We had it painted and always maintained the boundary lawns surrounding the bridge to enhance its charm.”

Mrs Storer said when she contacted the council following the bridge’s removal she was told two town representatives had contacted the council requesting the bridge be removed as it was unsafe but the council admitted to her no inspection had been done by them.

Like Mrs Clinton, Mrs Storer called for the bridge to be returned and the Malvern

Community Board agreed, unanimously voting to ask the council to put the bridge back using as much of the original materials as possible.

Malvern Ward councillor John Morten abstained from voting or taking part in the discussion on the bridge.

Board chair Jenny Gallagher said the feeling of the board members was that the foot bridge did have historical significance to the township and it ought to be put back.

A report to the board by council’s Asset Manager Murray Washington said the dismantled bridge was now at a private yard in Darfield and that council would carry out an inspection of the bridge and its abutments to determine the cost of restoration.

The report also said the bridge was not of historic significance, not in good condition and not used.

Following the board’s request to have the bridge put back Mr Washington says they will finish their inspection of the bridge and report back to the community board and the Darfield Township Committee on the matter in about two weeks.

Licencing hours could be cut in Selwyn district The Selwyn District Council’s proposed Local Alcohol Policy could see the reduction in operating hours for the district’s taverns and hotels.

The draft policy, once adopted, will control the trading hours and location of venues which sell alcohol in Selwyn.

Under the draft policy new offlicence venues, such as bottle stores and wine shops, would be ‘encouraged’ to locate in existing town centres and be excluded from proposed neighbourhood and local centres in Rolleston and Lincoln.

Changes to the current policy will see closing times for taverns and hotels cut back from 3am to 1am, while club licence managers will be required to be on site for more than 20 patrons.

Previously club licence managers did not have to be on the premises but be on call.

Earlier a telephone survey of around 381 Selwyn residents was carried out to help council develop the draft policy.

Council’s acting Chief Executive John Christensen said the survey found that most residents thought that there were enough licensed venues in the district.

“Most people thought that the operating hours should not be extended for restaurants, cafes and off-licences and also felt that they should be reduced for taverns and hotels.”

He said the consultation period gave them the opportunity to hear people’s views on what opening hours were appropriate for licensed venues in Selwyn and where new venues should be located.

A hearing on the draft policy to listen to verbal submissions will be held on July 30 and council hopes to have a provisional Local Alcohol Policy in place by the end of August to come into effect early next year.

Art Gallery celebrations Around 60 people descended on the Selwyn Art Gallery in Darfield recently to help the gallery mark its 15th birthday.

The gallery, a Malvern Community Arts Council initiative, marked the occasion with an eclectic exhibition of works, with works ranging from paintings and sculptures to embroidery and ceramics.

MCAC chair Kirtsy Peel says they were blown away by the quality and variety of the exhibits.

“We asked people to contribute to the exhibition and we were excited by

what has arrived, with some of the works not those we would usually have in an exhibition.

Those who attended the 15th birthday party heard from a number of speakers including Dee Innes who was a driving force behind setting up the gallery while chair of the MCAC. Mayor Kelvin Coe proposed a toast to the gallery and commented on the vitality the gallery had brought to Darfield. ¢

Family bid for world titles

The Walker family of Rolleston share the surname of one of New Zealand’s leading BMX riders, Sarah Walker, and the family are looking to follow in her bike tracks when they head to the World BMX Championships in Auckland later this month.

Mum, Jocelyn, and her two children Jayden and Samantha will be representing New Zealand at the championships, while Dad, Andy, will be right alongside them as Team Walker mechanic.

The family involvement in the sport of BMX began when Jayden, then aged five, wanted to give it ago and that of course meant Mum and Dad had to tag along.

Jocelyn says she thought it looked easy and wanted to give it a go. Like Jayden, who is now 15 and in Year 11 at Lincoln High School, she quickly became hooked on the sport. Andy wasn’t so easily enticed as he preferred his twowheeled ventures to also include an engine, although he says he often jumps on a BMX bike to help him with fitness training for MotoX. When the youngest in family, Samantha, came along it was almost inevitable she got involved in the sport too. She got her first bike when she was only three and by the age of four was, like her mother and brother, riding competitively.

“One of the things about BMX riding is that it really is a family orientated sport and you often find more than

one member of a family riding in competitions,” Jocelyn says.

“Unfortunately as I am competing I don’t often get to see the kids ride, but Andy is always there to make sure they are okay and get them and their bikes ready for the next heat.”

For Jayden, who is competing in the UCI 16 years class, and Samantha, UCI 9 years, this will be their first world championships but for Jocelyn it will be here second after competing at the worlds in Adelaide in 2009.

“The opportunity to compete at world championships in our own country was too good to pass up,” says Jocelyn, who will compete in the Women’s 35+ class.

Also the qualification standard for host nation competitors is slightly more open than if the championships were being held in another country. But still to be able to compete for New Zealand at the championships the Walker riders all had to be ranked in the top 30 in this country. If the championships were held outside New Zealand they would have had to ranked inside the top eight.

The children both have their idols in the sport. For Jayden, who says he got into the sport because he liked

going fast and getting airborne, that is American rider Donny Robinson, a multiple world champion.

“Like me he is quite small but goes really fast,” Jayden says.

You don’t have to ask 9-year-old Samantha who her idol is, as there is an autograph of one rider on almost every part of her BMX equipment and clothing and that’s New Zealand’s Olympic silver medallist Sarah Walker.

Both Jayden and Jocelyn are realistic about their chances at the world champs with both riding in highly competitive and large fields in their classes. Both are hoping to finish in the top half of their

recreation, youth activities, aged, welfare, educational service, cultural, religious and community affairs.

Andy says Samantha, who has had a top New Zealand ranking of two in her age group, is more of an unknown.

“At times she can be Captain Casual but then on other occasions she will pull out all stops and produce an amazing performance and she knows this competition is a big one.”

The UCI BMX World Championships will be held at the Vector Arena in Auckland from July 24 to 28 and will feature some of the world’s leading riders including double Olympic gold medallist Maris Strombergs from Latvia. ¢

The newly launched Malvern Community Patrol could be on the beat from this weekend.

Welcome to the weekly Abundant Health column in the ‘The Record’. By way of introduction, I have been involved with complementary health for over 15 years.

My main role in my company Abundant Health is product formulation and manufacture. I am also a qualified Nutritional Medicine practitioner and offer personalised health advice to help people improve and protect their health. I welcome reader feedback and am happy to answer your questions and to provide personalised advice.

Through this weekly column I will try and give practical advice, often related to specific problems. Today we want to briefly look at the importance of maintaining good levels of vitamin D especially through the winter months.

‘Wardlaw’s Perspectives in Nutrition’ is one of the most widely used university level nutrition textbooks. In the section on vitamin D, Robert Heaney (Professor of Medicine) makes the comment that in the past 10 years scientists have gained new insight into vitamin D. He states that it has a major role in controlling genes involved in colon, prostate and breast cancer, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. People with any brush with cancer, or have increased cancer risk need their vitamin D levels to be at the top of the normal 75–140nmol/l range. I know one GP who tries to keep her breast cancer patients at around 200nmol/l.

Vitamin D also has a role in general immunity, allergies, asthma, mood illnesses like seasonal affective disorder, depression and many more. Some diseases especially autoimmune diseases have direct links to low levels of vitamin D. For example the rate of MS increases from North to South with Otago and Southland having the highest levels in NZ (B. Taylor et.al 2010).

Regardless where you live we have a national vitamin D deficiency which is causing havoc with our health especially those problems linked to poor immunity. My advice is to ensure your daily multi-vitamin has 500–1,000IU daily. I would then add 1,000–2,000IU daily from May to October or get the monthly 50,000IU (1.25mg) on prescription. The impetus for the patrol came from the Darfield Township Committee in response to a number of vandalism incidents around the township as well as a desire to help local police.

Over 40 people turned up to the Malvern Community Patrol’s first public meeting in Darfield last week, which was also attended by police and Anne Smith from Community Patrols New Zealand, under whose umbrella the patrol falls.

MCP chair Errol Ashby says they were extremely pleased at the turnout with over half of those attending signing up to become volunteer patrollers to go with around 20 they already had on their books.

“We have had some outstanding support from the local business community in getting this up and running — it has been beyond our expectations,” Ashby says.

“We have been extremely fortunate to secure a vehicle thanks to Regan Coleman and Drummond and Etheridge.”

Ashby says local companies like Frew’s Transport, Fonterra and Leech Drainage have also been very generous in support of the venture.

Initially MCP will be running patrols around Darfield and Kirwee but intend to go further afield to places like Sheffield and Coalgate once they have consulted with those communities to get their approval to run the patrols.

Darfield Township Committee member and MCP patroller Graham Smith says the police were extremely supportive of the idea when they were approached.

Senior Constable Dave Pitkethley from Darfield Police told the public meeting they have a big patch to cover.

“With one officer covering 8500 square kms we cannot always be in the right place at the right time so any assistance is welcome.”

He told the budding patrollers that at times it wasn’t so much about what the patrollers saw but who saw them.

“A community patrol car acts as a deterrent, particularly with young people and the payoff is in crime prevention.”

While community patrollers do not have powers of arrest they will have a direct line into central police communications who can dispatch officers to an area should the need arise.

A touch of Latin America in Kirwee The Kirwee Players theatre group are putting the final touches to their latest production, Viva Mexico, a musical.

Viva Mexico is based on a book by Phil Dark and Bernard Dunn with lyrics

by Phil Dark with the music of Latin America adapted and arranged by Ronald Hanmer.

The Kirwee Players production of Viva Mexico is being directed by Mabel Knight with musical direction by Diane Coad.

The cast and crew of Kirwee Players have been busy working behind the scenes over the last few months to put together another polished performance which Selwyn audiences have come to expect from the group.

Director Mabel Knight says they have learnt the music and the cast have been working hard perfecting lines.

“It is now a matter of putting everything together to bring a show to our audience that we can be proud of.”

Choreographer Amanda Hopkins has also been busy working with the cast members.

“There are some lovely numbers with the potential for some real showstoppers,” she says. “The cast just need to practise the moves and get it

An impulse decision to attend an alpaca auction has turned into an almost 25-year labour of love for West Melton lifestyle block holders Nic Cooper and Linda Blake.

The couple is the driving force behind one of the country’s leading alpaca studs, Southern Alpacas, sited on SH73 near West Melton.

“I was reading about the animals and DARFIELD in 1989 I saw there was an auction for Kiwi As – 100% Local alpacas, so went along and bought one,” Nic says.

years but the alpacas went with them.

With retirement looming they returned to West Melton with their eyes firmly fixed on establishing their alpaca stud.

“This time we wanted to have a main road site for visibility and ease of access for visitors,” Nic says.

The stud is set on 19 acres and Nic and Linda lease a further 6 acres for their herd. As well as the paddocks for the alpacas the property also has a retail store for fibre and yarns sales along with a number of goods made from the alpaca fibre such as scarfs.

With selective importation of top elite genetics, the Southern Alpacas herd has grown and the constant stream of championship ribbons at shows, in New Zealand and in Europe,

Over the years Linda has developed into an alpaca neo-natal specialist, expert in all aspects of alpaca breeding and birthing.

Nic says they are primarily a stud farm and their breeding programme is for quality herd improvement.

“This means well conformed alpacas, with fine fibre in the teens and to mid20s micron, with dense fibre coverage giving greater shear weights. We enjoy the diversity of natural colours in the alpaca, and breed for quality in all colours, rather than any specific colour.”

Dog registration due If your dog is over three months old then it is that time of year when the canine member of your family has to be registered.

Under the Dog Control Act 1996 all dogs older than three months must be registered every year (July–June) and there are financial penalties for non-registration.

If paid by July 31 the registration fee for a single dog is $35 and $25 for each additional animal but after that date it rises to $50 for a single dog and $35 for any subsequent.

CPWL workshops prove popular Central Plains Water Ltd had a record turnout to its series of workshops with nearly 500 in total attending the four workshops, including nearly 300 to the final briefing in Darfield.

CPWL chief executive Derek Crombie, says he was greatly encouraged by the large turnout, and ‘blown away” by the numbers who came to the final workshop in Darfield.

“At the start of the evening we only put out about 100 chairs and we had to keep adding until the Darfield Community Hall was full,” he says.

The first workshop was a briefing to farm advisers, accountants and bankers with shareholder meetings in Dunsandel, Greendale and finally Darfield.

The Dunsandel workshop was aimed at the first 20,000 hectares under the scheme and was tailored primarily with the switch from ground water use to surface water use. Workshops two (Greendale) and three (Darfield) focussed on conversion from dry land to irrigated land.

“The aim of the workshops was to update our shareholders and their advisers on the status of the project to assist them with their decisions to take up surface water irrigation with CPWL,” Crombie says.

“With the employment of key Solid Energy staff, the project planning has moved quickly over the last six months and we are getting to the point where we need farmer commitment to the

CPWL will organise a series of local cluster group meetings in early to mid July so that farmers can learn more specific information as it relates to their farm.

“Firm commitments are needed now before we can move to construction planning to deliver surface water to the first 20,000ha area by the 2015–16 irrigation season,” Crombie says.

“Farmer support and uptake for the remaining 40,000ha of the scheme is also critical so we can start design on the next stages.” ¢

Texture is often not always immediately obvious when you first walk into a room but the more time you spend in it the more apparent textures become. They can either inexplicably wire you onto the edge or totally relax you.

A fabric texture is determined by the type of fibre from which it is made and the way the yarn has been spun. Fabric density and weave also influence a texture. Wool for example can be constructed so that it is soft and fine as found in trendy merino clothing items or in heavy and homely textures as found in a Scandi design felted wool cushion cover. Imaginative use of texture will bring a room to life.

Pattern like colour can be an awesome addition to a home. It adds character, drama and of course style.

Mixing pattern or combining pattern with plains requires a near perfect colour match, and most pattern combo’s are best confined to designs that originate from the same era or style. Scale and density of pattern can vary and often very small patterns disappoint as they can only be appreciated close up. Stripes work in most rooms — large bold patterns need big spaces to show off.
