Community board wants bridge back by Kent Caddick
The Malvern Community Board is calling on the Selwyn District Council to put back a 100-year-old foot bridge it removed without consultation with local residents.

The foot bridge was built to enable the Sisters of Mercy nuns from the St Johns Convent in Darfield to cross a water race to reach the St Joseph’s Catholic Church on Telegraph Road, which was established in 1888. Local residents say they were shocked to discover the bridge had been removed and upset they were not consulted on its removal or given the opportunity to repair it if it was deemed unsafe. Darfield resident Barbara Clinton told the Malvern Community Board at its June meeting that
in 1896 her Great Great Grandfather Peter Clinton donated two acres of land for the purpose of building a school. She said on the land was a four-roomed cottage, which was part of the convent and used by the Sisters of Mercy who taught at the school. “A bridge was erected for the use of the Catholic community to have access from the school and convent to the church. It is part of the historic fabric of Darfield,” she said. continued on page 7 …
