Selwyn teenager Cameron Harker has become the youngest senior club champion in the history of the Lincoln Golf Club. Not bad for a 14-year-old who only picked up a golf club just over two years ago. Even more impressive was the fact that the pupil needed to beat the master in the final as he came up against his coach, and six-time Lincoln senior club champ, Mike Bond. Harker and Bond faced up in the 36hole senior final when the Lincoln Golf Club, founded in 1931, held its annual club championships day recently. Things didn’t start well for Harker and after 18 holes the teenager was trailing his more experienced opponent by seven shots in less than ideal conditions. However, the second 18 holes was a different story as Harker clawed his way back into the match and after 36 holes the two players were even, forcing a play-off. “I was a lot more solid on the second 18 holes and he made a few mistakes,” Harker said. Those mistakes would came back to haunt his opponent on the second playoff hole as Bond missed a 10 foot putt to give Harker his maiden senior title. “To be honest just getting to the final was pretty good but it was cool to win the match,” Harker said. Harker’s rapid rise in the golfing world has been noticed by those outside the club with the Lincoln High School student being selected to represent Central Canterbury along with another junior development player at the club, Taylor Holland.

Harker said he wants to take the game as far as he can go but is realistic about emulating the feats of some of the pro-players he looks up to like Jason Day and Jordan Spieth. “It’s extremely competitive and there are so many good players out there.” Other results from the Lincoln Golf Club finals day were:

NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said this did not mean the organisations were entering into a partnership but will look to collaborate more in the future. “We see huge value in collaborating with Federated Farmers, particularly as we are developing the next generation of leaders,” Mr Copeland said. “Many of our members have gone on to higher office in Federated Farmers and we are thrilled to see that continue.” Mr Copeland said there many issues that both organisations align on including better employment relationships, rural health services, disaster relief and on-farm broadband services, but it’s important they retain their own identities as they service different memberships. “However, any incentive to our members to join Federated Farmers is welcomed as it offers further value and a leadership pathway to those that want to continue in that arena. “We appreciate that Federated Farmers needs to look to the younger generation to come through into its ranks

Annual plan hearings

Several hundred submissions have been received on the Selwyn District Council’s Draft Annual Plan.

 Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton is happy with the number of submissions to the council’s draft annual plan

Public consultation on the plan closed on May 3, with 185 submissions received on the draft plan, while 241 people completed an online survey. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said council was pleased to hear from so many residents on the annual plan. “This year we offered some different options to make it easier for people to share their views on the topics we were proposing in the annual plan,” Mayor Broughton said. “We were really pleased to get a wide range of people participating in the consultation and taking part in our survey or sharing their thoughts with councillors when they visited local supermarkets and other events.”

He said submissions and survey comments showed strong support for carrying out planning work for a new pool at Selwyn Aquatic Centre, completing further footpath extensions and developing a health hub, while there were a range of views about introducing a standard stormwater rate and changing library opening hours. Councillors will be considering submissions and survey responses when making decisions on the annual plan at submission hearings being held on Thursday, May 18 (10am–8pm) and Friday, May 19 (from 9am) at the council’s Rolleston Headquarters. The hearings are open to the public. 

Selwyn sprinter Kick start for caps off golden summer Selwyn homeowners  by Kent Caddick

Rolleston athlete Maia Broughton has capped off a golden summer by being named Athletics Canterbury’s sprinter of the year for 2017. The 15-year-old Lincoln High School student received the accolade at Athletics Canterbury’s Athlete of the Year awards dinner held in Christchurch last week. Broughton, who is coached by former New Zealand representative sprinter Bev Peterson, picked up five gold medals at the National Track and Field Championships in Hamilton earlier this year, competing for Canterbury in the U18 division. The Selwyn Athletics Club member captured the triple crown of sprinting at the nationals, winning the 100m, 200m and 400m titles despite being the youngest athlete in the field. In addition to her individual success Broughton helped the Canterbury relay teams to gold in the 4x100m and 4x400m events at the nationals. Throughout the season Broughton broke a number of Canterbury age group records while competing for her province, the Selwyn club and her school. At the South Island Colgate Games in Invercargill early in the season she secured four individual golds in the girls’ Grade 14 division, winning the

The scholarships are awarded to athletes who display outstanding performance and the recipients receive a donation to go towards sports gear, coaching and other resources, to help them toward their athletics goals. 

Almost 600 Selwyn homeowners have been helped by the government’s KiwiSaver HomeStart scheme according to local MP Amy Adams. The scheme offers grants for first home buyers to help with a deposit on a home, and enables first home buyers to access their KiwiSaver funds. Selwyn MP Amy Adams said the scheme is helping more people in the Selwyn region to buy their own homes, with 575 grants issued in the past two years. “KiwiSaver HomeStart is the most generous government support scheme for home buyers in over a generation, and is being used more and more by our young people to help with home ownership,” Ms Adams said. “Here in Selwyn, we have seen the number of HomeStart grants increase significantly since the scheme was launched two years ago. “In the past year, the scheme has helped 412 people in Selwyn with grants worth a total of $3.1 million. This represents a sizeable increase from the 163 first home buyers that benefitted in the first year of the scheme through $1.2 million in grants. “The grants can help our young people overcome the most

difficult hurdle of pulling together the funds for a deposit, and the scheme is forecast to help 90,000 first home buyers across New Zealand by 2020.” Ms Adams said home ownership provides stability for families, strength for communities, and security in retirement. 

Fire recovery plan released  by Kent Caddick

Selwyn District Council has released a recovery plan discussion document to assist in Selwyn’s recovery following the Port Hills fire. February’s firestorm on the Port Hills week’s Port Hills covered over 2,000 hectares and destroyed 11 homes. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said Christchurch City Council recently released a Port Hills Recovery Plan Discussion Document and the development of Selwyn’s plan has been coordinated with the Christchurch plan. “The Selwyn discussion and recovery document is focused on the Selwyn area affected by the fires,” Mr Broughton said. “Council has been working with families affected by the fire since February and the recovery document is focussed on continuing to support them into the future. “It also looks at actions that can be taken to restore the built and natural environment and reduce the risk of fire affecting this area in the future.” Mayor Broughton said a meeting was held for property owners in the Port Hills area in late March to discuss how the risk of fires in the area could be reduced in the future. “Property owners provided valuable feedback at this meeting and through council staff which has been used to help develop the draft recovery plan,” he said. “Council’s Recovery Team has been assisting affected families

by offering advice as well as helping with advocacy to other organisations. “Building safety inspections at a number of properties have been completed by the council’s building consents team and some reseeding work has been coordinated and carried out in this area by the community.” A range of future actions are identified in the plan. These include setting up a facilitated building consent process for people who are planning to carry out repairs or build new houses following fire damage, with consents being prioritised. “Some geotechnical assessment has already been undertaken on properties, and further work is currently underway in Early Valley Road to address the risk of rockfall. Mayor Broughton said among the objectives of the discussion document and recovery are to ensure homes are rebuilt in a timely manner with property owners being supported through the process, and the future landscape of the Port Hills reduces the risk of future extreme fire events. Comments on the discussion document are open until May 26 and a copy of the document and information on how to submit comments is online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay. 

The initial training squad for the 2017 Ellesmere representative rugby side has been named.

 by Kent Caddick

Ellesmere stalwart Mark Maitland has been named in the Canterbury provincial rugby squad for its first two Ranfurly Shield matches of the season. Canterbury head coach Glenn Delaney has named a 31-man squad for the upcoming Ranfurly Shield defences against Wanganui (June 21) and Mid Canterbury (August 4). “We have named an exciting squad to kick off our 2017 season, with a mixture of returning talent and 19 players in the side who are yet to make their first-class Canterbury debut,” Delany said. “These players have impressed the coaching group for their respective clubs this season and we look forward to giving them the opportunity to wear the red and black jersey. “The history of the Ranfurly Shield provides a lot of motivation for our group and we know that both Wanganui and Mid Canterbury will be tough opponents leading in to our Mitre 10 Cup campaign.” Maitland, who plays for the Waihora club in the Ellesmere rugby competition, has also been named in the initial Ellesmere rep side and will be joined in the Canterbury squad by another former Ellesmere rep Steve Alfeld, who was originally from Leeston but now plays his rugby for Christchurch. Pets & Livestock

Livestock need shelter  by Dr Marjorie Orr, www.lifestyleblock.co.nz

With winter setting in keeping your lifestyle block animals warm and secure is a priority.

ADVERTORIAL

Being prepared for emergencies by Yolande Howell BVSc (Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Emergencies, as the name suggests, can happen at any time. It is prudent to be prepared in case something happens to you and your pets.

Livestock can usually cope fairly well with either rain or wind or cold temperatures but when two or more of these conditions occur together, animals can quickly become chilled. If they get so cold that they shiver, their requirement for feed increases hugely and if they don’t get extra feed they soon lose weight. The animals that really need shelter are the old and the young, the newlyshorn and the fine-skinned, those in thin body condition and those that are not well. This is true whatever the species — horses and ponies, cattle, sheep, deer, goats or alpacas. Goats are particularly susceptible to cold because they have little fat under the skin and their coat is not waterproof. Tethered goats should always have access to a weatherproof shelter with solid roof and walls. Horses need shelter from cold wet windy weather and appreciate a cover in winter. These should be waterproof and fitted correctly so that they don’t chafe. The horse’s skin and body condition under the cover should be checked frequently. Newborn animals are very vulnerable in winter and the odds are stacked against their survival when they are exposed to bad weather. Rain, wind and cold temperatures together make a lethal combination

and providing pregnant livestock with good shelter around the time of birth is like taking out an insurance policy. With effective shelter, the odds of the newborns surviving are improved hugely. Lamb covers can provide useful protection from wet windy weather but the covers must fit comfortably and they shouldn’t flap or rustle to frighten the mother. Monitor lambs with covers on to make sure they don’t get tangled. Winter is a good time to plant trees and shrubs to provide effective shelter and shade for years to come. There are many and varied types of shelter plants from low dense flax to native bush, from conifers like macrocarpa and pine to deciduous poplars and willows. Because an effective shelter belt of trees and shrubs takes years to establish, you can put up temporary shelter, especially in paddocks where there are very young animals or newly shorn animals. Wind netting secured tightly to the fence on the windward side of the paddock can be effective. If you are storing big bales of hay or baleage, they could be lined up close to but outside the fence. Arranging bales of hay in the paddock in pairs in a V-shape angled into the prevailing wind provides good shelter for smaller grazing animals. 

Recent natural disasters affecting Canterbury such as earthquakes, floods and fires have hopefully brought everyone’s attention to the issue. If you haven’t already prepared yourselves then I hope you will soon. It is vital to include your pets in the disaster plan as they are reliant on you for help. There are lots of survival kits/packs available for people but have you thought about what you may need in case your pets are involved in an emergency? In the first instance, have your vet’s afterhours emergency phone number on hand. Have a first aid kit ready, it should include: 1. Bandages — crepe bandages, cohesive bandages 2. Tape — micropore or similar 3. Scissors

4. Antibacterial wound cleaner For a pet survival kit, I suggest: 1. Enough food for at least a week 2. Bottles of water 3. Warm blankets 4. Bowls x 2 5. Spare medication — if your pet is on ongoing treatment it is always wise to obtain your next script in good time and not run too low 6. Collar, harness and lead (this includes cat harnesses) to secure your pet 7. Keep this in a box or bag that can be a pet carrier too. Have a plan ready, discuss it with the whole family. Be prepared. If you also have livestock, have an evacuation plan for them too.

Sheep breeders in a spin  by Kent Caddick

Selwyn members of the Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association have celebrated the association’s 40th birthday, taking part in the group’s annual conference in Oamaru. The conference was organised and hosted by the South Canterbury/Waitaki Branch of the BCSBA and featured displays of coloured fleeces, craft work, sheepskins and photography. The association was formed with the aims of helping farmers and lifestyle block owners produce the best possible sheep and wool, and promoting natural coloured wool for its special qualities. BCSBA promotions officer Georgie Fairless said in the 12 months leading into this year’s conference members were busy preparing fleeces, spinning yarn and knitting bed socks and fingerless mittens as a donation to the residents of the Northanjer Rest Home in Oamaru. “Our members enjoy creating natural wool gifts for our annual charity,” Mrs Fairless said. “We know that wool is a natural, sustainable and comfortable fibre to work with, wear and keep us warm.” She said members of the public were invited to see the displays of fleece and craft work at the conference while others attended seminars on spinning and weaving which were given on the different breeds of sheep, the type of wool they produce and which wool to spin and use for a craft project.

Farmers making impact on biodiversity A new study on Queen Elizabeth II National Trust covenants has highlighted the contribution sheep and beef farmers are making to New Zealand’s biodiversity and landscape protection. The study by the University of Waikato Institute for Business Research quantifies the financial commitment made by landowners who have protected around 180,000ha since the trust was established in 1977. Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive, Sam McIvor said the report showed that two thirds of QEII covenants are on primary production land, with 47% of all covenants being on sheep and beef farms. “Some farms have more than one covenant and many farmers open their covenants to the community, often partnering with schools and local community groups,” McIvor said. “While we knew farmers are deeply committed to preserving their land, it’s great to have this independent study that quantifies how that’s happening on farms. “Last year 60% of the new covenants were on sheep and beef farms and the income forgone, or opportunity cost, is around $105,000 a covenant. This is where land had an alternative productive potential, but protecting it preserves its special values.” Mr McIvor said the wider New Zealand community might not have seen the scale of the contribution that sheep and beef farmers were making to protect the significant biodiversity and landscape
