Great Expectations airs during the bicentennial of Dickens’ birth and marks the 15th Masterpiece adaptation of the great author’s works. It is directed by Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) and written by Sarah Phelps (Oliver Twist). As part of the bicentennial, Masterpiece will also broadcast its 16th Dickens production, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Charles Dickens’ last novel, left unfinished at the halfway mark at his death, has been given a new ending by writer Gwyneth Hughes (Five Days, Miss Austen Regrets).

Whether you’ve read the Charles Dickens classic or not, the new adaptation of Great Expectations is sure to captivate you. The story is replete with eccentric characters who face betrayal, love, kindness, death, deception and redemption. Masterpiece Classic serves up the rags-to-riches tale with an all-star cast that includes Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, Bleak House), as one of Dickens’ most haunting creations: Miss Havisham. A bride-to-be who was jilted at the altar years before, she has worn her fading wedding dress ever since, surrounded at home by the fossilized remains of the marriage feast and hell-bent on getting even with the male sex. Newcomer Douglas Booth stars as Pip, the promising young man who’s snared by the eccentric Miss Havisham. On the way to becoming a gentleman, he falls in love with Miss Havisham’s beautiful adopted daughter, Estella, played by Vanessa Kirby (The Hour). David “Poirot” Suchet is Jaggers, Miss Havisham’s crack attorney; and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) is the fugitive felon Abel Magwitch, who is by turns dangerous, vengeful and recklessly loyal.

Covering Science for KQED Lauren Sommer is never really sure where her workday will take her.
What goes into translating those science subjects into a language that non–science followers can understand? I definitely spend a lot of time working with scientists to find the right metaphor or analogy to explain a complex topic. That’s especially important for radio stories, where we don’t have graphics or photos to illustrate things. But as much time as I spend on that, I also want to bring out the emotional context of the discovery process. That’s something everyone can understand.
Hear QUEST Radio urban environmental reports Mondays at 6:33am and 8:33am on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM. QUEST’s website features extended interviews with scientists, a science blog written by Northern California scientists, Web-only videos, educator materials and more. kqed.org/quest
Earth Day is April 22, and KQED is celebrating all month long. Find a list of all KQED’s environmentally focused programming and events at kqed.org/earth.

How did you get into science journalism? Almost all of my family vacations as a kid involved camping and hiking in a national park, so it’s fair to say I’ve always been fascinated by the natural world. After studying environmental policy and science in college, I saw a need to help communicate the challenges we face. KQED has made an incredible commitment to covering science and environment, which is what brought me here. QUEST covers a lot of complex topics. How difficult is it to understand some of what you’re covering? When it comes to a topic like quantum mechanics, it’s no walk in the park. But those are some of the most rewarding stories to cover. With the challenges facing media organizations, there are fewer and fewer science reporters doing that kind of work.
You recently were on board NASA’s flying telescope. What was it like? It’s a 747 with a hole cut in the side so the onboard telescope can see out. I tagged along for a 12-hour, all-night research flight over the Pacific Ocean. It was neat to see how excited the astronomers were to be star-gazing, since it’s a very unique research opportunity. But at 4am, it’s even tougher to understand the complexities of infrared astronomy! What’s the most unusual story you’ve covered for QUEST? That’s a hard one. I’ve found myself in some pretty interesting situations: hiking up mountains looking for spotted owls, riding in a computer-driven car and looking for porpoises in a boat under the Golden Gate Bridge. I’ve done interviews on planes, kayaks, cargo ships — even on skis. One of the great things about my job is that I never know what’s next.

As a radio reporter and multimedia producer for QUEST, KQED’s award-winning science and environment series, Lauren might find herself in a forest with researchers listening to wildlife one day and in a NASA flying telescope the next. Lauren recently answered a few questions about her work with QUEST and the challenges of science reporting.

Join America Revealed host Yul Kwon and farmer Abeni Ramsey for an evening celebrating seasonal foods, foraging, bee-keeping, urban farming and the onset of spring! Visit kqed.org/events for more information.
America Revealed begins Wednesday, April 11, at 10pm, followed by the pilot episode of Food Forward at 11pm. Food Forward also airs Monday, March 9, at 7:30pm. It’s all on KQED 9.
Presented by KQED, Food Forward captures the local food movement in action, introducing us to people who are changing how America eats. In the pilot episode, you’ll meet food rebels from across the country who are growing food in the cities where they live. Meet folks like John Mooney whose
hydroponic farm is on the rooftop of a 105-year-old historic building in Manhattan’s West Village and urban farmer Abeni Ramsey (pictured) from West Oakland who is now running her own crew at City Girl Farms. These are stories America needs to hear.
QUEST — Explore the Edge of Space and Cook with Insects! The new television season of QUEST begins Wednesday, April 25, at 7:30pm on KQED 9. Discover all QUEST media at kqed.org/ quest. Follow QUEST on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
For a sneak preview of the new QUEST television season, head to Nerd Nite SF at the Rickshaw Stop on April 18. See page 2 for more details.
Water bug with cucumber. Any takers?
Then, coming in May, QUEST investigates heart disease — America’s most serious health problem — in a 30-minute special, “Pump It Up: Heart Health Special Report.” Visit the front lines of the childhood obesity epidemic, learn about the breakthroughs that are helping more heart attack victims survive and peer into the future to a time when a single injection might rebuild a damaged heart. And don’t miss QUEST’s exploration into the science of bike riding. Surprisingly, scientists still don’t understand exactly how we can stay upright on a bike!

Soar and squirm with QUEST, KQED’s multimedia science series, as it blasts off on another exciting season of television. First, meet a group of amateur rocket builders to learn how a once relatively mild-mannered hobby has changed dramatically — with enthusiasts of all ages building rockets that soar miles above Earth to the edge of space. Then explore the newest Bay Area food craze: cooking with insects. Some people may hesitate, but bug chefs say insects may be a smarter, more sustainable alternative to more traditional kinds of meat.

Each year, some 150,000 pounds of surplus California tomatoes become ammunition at Reno, Nevada’s La Tomatina — America’s biggest tomato fight!
Most of us probably know very little about what it really takes to deliver goods to our door, build the cars we drive, power our homes and mobile devices, and feed our families. What does it take to get celebrated actor John Hurt to appear in a 12 1/2-minute short film? “It’s all about the script,” Michael Davies told The Bristol Evening Post. The British director managed to talk the star into appearing in his film Love At First Sight. “We had a script that he liked. It’s amazing what can happen if you have a good enough script.” KQED’s ImageMakers film series kicks off its 10th season on April 14 with an episode titled “The Golden Years,” which includes the 2012 Academy Award shortlisted film Love At First Sight and two others about love and
aging. Scott Dwyer, who curates the series, described Love At First Sight as a tear jerker, but wouldn’t say more. “I don’t get surprised often,” he said, “but this one did it.” Since its debut in 2002, ImageMakers has featured 315 short films from 31 countries. For many of the films, the series has provided their only U.S. television exposure. The 34 other films airing this season come from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, France, the Czech Republic (a first for the series), Portugal, Bulgaria (another first), Germany, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland.
In May, look for West of the Moon, a film from American director Brent Bonacorso. The wildly inventive and visually amazing film invites comparisons to the work of Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton and may currently be the most celebrated on the international film festival circuit, with 11 awards. Also coming in May, The Candidate asks the question “If you could kill off your most aggravating co-worker and get away with it, would you?” Science fiction fans will recognize actor Robert Picardo, from the Stargate and Star Trek Voyager series.
ImageMakers airs Saturdays at 7:30pm on KQED 9. The new season begins April 14.

Why did you want to become a CAP member, and what would you like to accomplish during your tenure? I joined CAP to bring perspective and analysis, offer opportunities for engagement with new audiences and strengthen the leadership of the Board of Directors. I’d like to help create channels of communication for diversity awareness and inclusion, specifically in young African American and immigrant communities.

What would you like to accomplish during your tenure on CAP? I would like to help create strategies and programing that reaches a younger demographic and more low-income communities and communities of color. Also, although KQED television programming covers most of what the Bay Area is known for, like art, food and nature, it is missing activism. I would like to expand programming that highlights the Bay Area’s progressive nature that sets a precedent for the nation and, often, the world.

April 15, 2012, marks the the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the “unsinkable” ship. And although chances are good that you won’t be a passenger on one of this month’s Titanic Memorial Cruises (yes, there is more than one), you can still commemorate the fateful voyage on shore. Five programs with interesting perspectives on the tragedy air this month on KQED 9 (with repeats on KQED Plus). Saving the Titanic sets sail April 1 at 10pm, followed on April 8 by Titanic: Born in Belfast and The Iceberg That Sank the Titanic. Titanic with Len Goodman airs on April 10, and Words of the Titanic premieres April 13.
