Moments in Time: 70 Years at KQED

KQED public media has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area for 70 years, taking people of all ages on journeys to discover new communities, places and ideas. To celebrate our anniversary this year, we’re revisiting memorable moments from the past.

Sesame Street debuted on public media stations nationwide on November 10, 1969. Created to “master the addictive qualities of television and do something good with them,” such as helping young children prepare for school, the program featured a timeless cast of characters, including Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and Bert and Ernie.

Translated as “Sons of the Desert,” this popular Chilean drama returns with 10 new episodes. In Season 2, we learn more about the tragic tale of two brothers who were forcibly separated in their youth, grew up to be on opposite sides of the law and fell in love with the same woman. In Spanish with English subtitles.

A True Renaissance Man’s Profound Influence on Future Generations

Growing up Filipino American in a Catholic household, I have an image burned into my memory of a framed print of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, which hung as a focal point in my grandparent’s kitchen. Every time I was in the same room as the painting, I’d stare at it, analyzing it while preparing my cheesy pan de sal for breakfast or quietly enjoying its company during a lively family party. I took comfort in how prominent it was in my family’s home and later realized (thanks to social media) that The Last Supper is a quintessential piece of art that many Catholic Filipino families have in their homes. Now, as an adult, I take comfort in knowing that my relationship with The Last Supper is something that bonds me with other Filipinos. This piece of artwork has made such an impression on our culture, and it’s just one of the everlasting contributions Leonardo left for humanity to study. It comes as no surprise that the iconic 15th-century polymath is Ken Burns’ first non-American subject in this new two-part, four-hour documentary co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon.

The film follows the artist’s evolution as a draftsman, painter, scientist and engineer who used notebooks to explore an astonishing array of subjects, including philosophy, engineering, warfare, anatomy and geography. Although Leonardo’s paintings and notebooks tell us much about how he saw the world, we know surprisingly little about his inner life or what he thought about himself and others. We do know, however, that Leonardo explored science beyond the human body. He wrote in one of his notebooks that “Gravity is limited to the elements of water and earth; but this force is unlimited, and it could be used to move infinite worlds if instruments could be made by which the force could be generated.” In one experiment, he used nothing more than a jar filled with sand to help him roughly calculate the earth’s gravitational constant. It would be a century before Galileo’s experiments proved gravity’s universal effect on objects and far longer before Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein would use calculus — not yet invented in Leonardo’s time — to define and explain gravity.

Immerse yourself in the life of the legend who, as Ken Burns puts it, “had a unique genius for inquiry, aided by his extraordinary skills as an artist and scientist, that helps us better understand the natural world that we are part of and to appreciate more fully what it means to be alive and human.” Leonardo da Vinci airs over two consecutive nights: Monday, November 18, and Tuesday, November 19, at both 8pm and 10pm on KQED 9. Viewers can also stream directly from the KQED App.
