KQED Studios Fund

Since its founding in 1954, KQED has looked forward and evolved to meet the needs of an ever-changing media landscape. Now, KQED is a leading example of how a community-supported, nonprofit journalism and educational media service can thrive in a digital world. KQED has doubled down on our mission to inform, inspire and involve residents about the issues that matter to us all. Rooted in the Bay Area, and globally relevant, KQED Studios is a research and development lab to develop and pilot fresh, compelling programs to meet the increasing demand of audiences who now spend more than eight hours per day with digital media. In the last year, KQED Studios has launched the video series Beyond the Menu with Cecilia Phillips, telling the backstories of your favorite global dishes; The Latest, a continuously updating news feed podcast with new content throughout the day; and Close All Tabs, hosted by GenZ tech journalist Morgan Sung, which uses irreverent humor and insights to break down the impact of internet culture on our lives.

On April 15, you can look forward to the launch of Hyphenación, hosted by Xorje Olivares: It’s a fun yet deep conversational video podcast featuring Latinx millennials navigating adulting and having easy conversations about hard things. You can find Beyond the Menu on YouTube and The Latest and Close All Tabs wherever you get your podcasts. All three are also available on the KQED App. Hyphenación launches April 15 on YouTube, the KQED App and other podcast platforms. You can also find direct links on kqed.org/kqed-studios

Donations to the KQED Studios Fund provide working capital to support digital innovation by fueling the design and launch of new podcasts and other digital media. Major support for KQED Studios comes from the Krishnan Shah Family Foundation and Birong Hu.

“I am so proud to support this incubator for new programs,” said Ms. Hu. “The enthusiasm and conviction from KQED’s leadership is palpable. And, it’s reassuring to know there’s a really creative team working to keep KQED engaging, relevant, healthy and thriving.”

Please contact Matt Hitchcock, Sr. Director of Major Gifts, if you would like more information about supporting programs and innovation at KQED: majorgifts@kqed.org

Survival of the Fittest: A New Series Explores How Africa’s Wildlife Endure Climate Change

In April of 2024, continental North America was witness to a rare astronomical event: a total solar eclipse. Plunging us into darkness for more than four minutes, the cosmic phenomenon served as a reminder that our planet is extraordinary. By our sheer existence, all of the species who call Earth home live in a balance of interconnectedness, so when the temperature of the globe changes, it’s felt by living creatures everywhere. This planetary ripple effect is at the forefront of the new three-part series Nature – Katavi: Africa’s Fallen Paradise. Filmed in the heart of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, the docuseries offers an inside look at how our heating climate impacts even the mightiest of wildlife.

Katavi is a little-known national park spanning more than 3,000 square miles of western Tanzania. In this typically lush paradise, lions, hippos and crocodiles live more or less in harmony. But during a year of unusual circumstances, a rare climactic upheaval transforms the natural dry season into the toughest drought in almost a century, forcing the animals to fight for territory, resources and their lives.

When faced with an unprecedented shift in their environment, the animals devise new survival strategies and the desperation pushes them to the edge of their endurance. Lion cubs face mortal danger from a rogue male lion intent on a takeover while hippos fight viciously for a dwindling river. Even crocodiles, usually capable of outlasting prolonged periods without food or fresh water, fall victim to the intense conditions. When the drought finally breaks, Katavi veers from one extreme to another. Water brings relief and movement for all, but the parched land cannot absorb the heavy rain, causing further peril.

The docuseries is at once a beautiful and fascinating picture of the natural world and an unmissable alarm that as our planet heats, these apocalyptic conditions could become more frequent. Not to be missed, Nature – Katavi: Africa’s Fallen Paradise, premieres over three consecutive Wednesdays on April 2, 9 and 16 at 8pm on KQED 9 or you can livestream it on the KQED App. —Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

The Duchess

Saturday, April 5, at 8pm on KQED 9 This 2008 film chronicles the life of the late 18thcentury English aristocrat Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (Keira Knightley).
