KQED Presents The Class

This month, KQED will be debuting The Class, a six-part docuseries that follows seniors from Antioch’s Deer Valley High School as they navigate the route to college during the COVID-19 pandemic. From Executive Producer Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting, Hamilton) and award-winning filmmakers Jaye and Adam Fenderson, The Class explores the experiences of six students who are pursuing higher education while grappling with issues of mental health, sexuality, homelessness, poverty and inequality — as well as orders to shelter in place.

The national student-to-counselor ratio is 482:1. So even in the best of times, too many talented students in low-income communities are getting left behind. Deer Valley High School’s new college adviser, “Mr. Cam,” is fighting to change that. With passion and determination, he empowers the Class of 2021 to overcome their challenges while ceaselessly fighting for their dreams of a college degree.

Amidst racism, gun violence and gentrification, the series highlights resilience through a coming-of-age narrative. “It is the stories of change and hope that thread all the hard times together and offer a glimpse at the ability of human compassion to create opportunity for those who need it most,” notes Holly Kernan, chief content officer at KQED. “COVID-19 was neither the first nor the last pandemic to take us by surprise. What The Class aims to do is create comprehension as a framework for the future.”

The Class is made available to public television stations nationwide by KQED Presents, KQED’s national distribution service. KQED Presents strives to bring the work of independent filmmakers to broad audiences through public television, navigating delivery of exceptional programs to the screen. KQED is proud to be the presenting station for The Class, and to be sharing this powerful docuseries that is coupled with an outreach campaign to inspire community dialogue between policymakers, educators, families and students.

Don’t miss this moving series that offers an opportunity to create a more hopeful future for the next generation of students. The Class airs on Friday, March 21, at 8pm, Saturday, March 22, at 6pm and Monday, March 24, at 9pm on KQED 9; and Sunday, March 23, at 8pm on KQED Plus

In addition to the docuseries, this month KQED Presents will also be premiering Singing for Justice, a documentary about San Francisco–based folk musician and political radical Faith Petric. As part of our celebration of Women’s History Month, it’s a look at how Petric defied stereotypes and rallied for social change. Tune in for Singing for Justice on Friday, March 14, at 8pm on KQED 9

A Mover and a Shaker: The Woman Who Was at the Center of Everything

As I see it, the current presidential administration has undone much of the progress that our predecessors worked for in the past century. But I believe that in these unnerving times, it’s imperative not to wallow in despair. We must fight back. Liz Carpenter believed this too. Her legacy of unfailing optimism is a reminder that “the fight goes on, and we go on with the fight.”

For those not in the know, Liz Carpenter (1920–2010) helped shape some of the most vivid moments and movements of the 20th century. Often front and center where history was unfolding, she left her own indelible mark on world events. She was a barrier-breaking woman journalist, author, humorist, political activist and feminist leader extraordinaire. At 34, she was elected president of the Women’s National Press Club, a platform she leveraged in order to erode barriers to participation in the men-only National Press Club. She was the key vicepresidential advisor to Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) and the chief of staff and press secretary to Lady Bird Johnson. Carpenter co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus and campaigned for women candidates around the country. As co-chair of ERAmerica, she led the battle for state ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Shaking It Up: The Life and Times of Liz Carpenter, co-produced and co-directed by Peabody award-winning Bay Area filmmaker Abby Ginzberg and Carpenter's daughter, Christy Carpenter, was named Best Biographical Film at the Toronto International Women Film Festival. The documentary includes candid interviews and never-before-seen home movies, photos, interview clips and rarely shown artifacts — including Carpenter’s initial handwritten draft of LBJ’s first presidential remarks in the immediate aftermath of JFK’s death.

Viewers will have multiple opportunities to watch Shaking It Up: The Life and Times of Liz Carpenter as it airs on Monday, March 3, at 9pm on KQED 9; Friday, March 7, at 8pm on KQED 9; Sunday, March 16, at 11pm on KQED Plus; and Monday, March 31, at 2pm on KQED Plus. You can also stream it on the KQED App. —Sophie Kim, Editorial + Production Assistant

Marie Antoinette, Season 2

At the height of their power, Marie Antoinette and Louis face a financial crisis and series of attacks. Binge all eight episodes of the new season starting on the night of its broadcast premiere March 23. (Season 1 is also available.)

R.I.P. Henry, Season 1

Dr. Henry Johnsen, a gifted surgeon, is stuck in tiny Odda. But he’s ready to leave it behind for a fresh start at a prestigious hospital in Bergen. From Walter Presents, in Norwegian with English subtitles. Available with Passport starting March 7

WOLF HALL: THE MIRROR AND THE LIGHT ON MASTERPIECE

I absolutely loved the Peabody and Golden Globe award-winning first season of Wolf Hall on MASTERPIECE and have rewatched it multiple times since it first aired in 2015. Damian Lewis and Claire Foy were stunning in their roles as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, but I was simply blown away by Mark Rylance, whose performance of Thomas Cromwell was like nothing I had ever seen. The first season covered the first two books in Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall series, which followed Cromwell’s rise. Now, the wait is finally over for the final chapter of the trilogy — and Cromwell’s downfall. Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light premieres March 23 on KQED 9, and Passport members won’t have to wait to see the next episode, as the entire season will be available to binge with KQED Passport that evening. Don’t miss the series that The Guardian called “the most intricate television you are ever likely to see.” —Meredith Speight, Senior Director, TV Programming

Murder in Sweden, Season 4

On a picturesque island, Maria juggles being a mother and a detective while managing her own struggles. In Swedish with English subtitles from Walter Presents. New season available with Passport March 14.

Paradise, Season 7

Paradise is a profound drama portraying tight-knit relationships between workers at a store amidst the societal expectations of the 1950s. From Walter Presents, in Italian with English subtitles. New season comes to Passport March 28

Call the Midwife, Season 14

Passport members get early access to the new season! Each episode will be available to stream 30 days ahead of its broadcast premiere. Episode 1 is available February 28 and will broadcast March 30 on KQED 9.

Elvis Presley: ’68 Comeback Special

Taped in Burbank, California, this television special — his first —was a brilliant milestone for Elvis, and it saved his career. Watch before it expires from the Passport library March 25
