Celebrating Black History Month

Last year during Black History month, we featured the incredible premiere of Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s Gospel, a series that explores the origin of Black spirituality through sermon and song. This year, we’re presenting a new PBS documentary that looks at the groundbreaking case that redefined a “jury of one’s peers” and openly challenged structural racism. American Justice on Trial: People v. Newton tells the story of the death penalty case against Black Panthers’ co-founder Huey P. Newton, who was accused of killing a white policeman and wounding another after a pre-dawn car stop in Oakland, California. Earlier that year, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy rocked a nation already bitterly divided over the Vietnam War. As the jury deliberated Newton’s fate, America was a tinderbox waiting to explode. Be sure to tune in for the full story of American Justice on Trial: People v. Newton on Friday, February 21, at 8pm on KQED 9.

At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate Black History Month is by curating documentaries, series and shows related to it. In the listings, which begin on page 4, you’ll see Black History Month shows highlighted in this purple color. You can find these programs on KQED Public Television or by streaming on KQED Passport or the KQED App.

WHAT TO WATCH

Funny Woman, Season 2

The setting is 1960s London, and Barbara Parker (stage name Sophie Straw) is pushing boundaries in the television industry, building a name for herself despite a male-dominated culture. She’s following in the footsteps of her idol, Lucille Ball, and is determined to be a success.

This is the world of Funny Woman, a series based on the novel Funny Girl by British author Nick Hornby (who wrote High Fidelity, An Education and About a Boy). The show is surprisingly provocative, tackling how the entertainment industry has portrayed not only women, but people of color, the LGBTQ+ community and topics considered taboo for the time, such as intimacy and monogamy.

While the story is centered on Parker, a cast of diverse and dynamic characters is woven throughout, inviting drama, scandal, humor and emotion. Parker’s warm relationship with her father clashes with her icy connection to her Aunt Marie. Meanwhile, love interests Clive Richardson (Parker’s onscreen leading man) and Dennis Mahindra (her devoted producer) provide a rather electric subplot that keeps viewers guessing.

When I first tuned into the series, I expected a tame and tailored program that would mirror other retrospectives of women in comedy. But Funny Woman proved to be bold, brave and politically relevant as it questioned the many roles humans play in a lifetime. Watching Parker take on society’s underestimation of women gets more exhilarating in each episode.

Now, Funny Woman’s long-awaited second season is coming to KQED, and we’ll finally learn how our protagonist’s career is faring amidst societal obstacles, controlling television executives and swooning romantic possibilities. I cannot wait to see what this daring series has in store. Be sure to tune in for Funny Woman, Season 2, on Sunday, February 2, at 10pm on KQED 9. —Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

Join young detective Matilda Stone and her three mystery-writing aunts as they work together to solve whodunit-style murders in their quaint English village. Queens of Mystery premieres on KQED February 27, but Passport members can binge seasons 1 and 2 early on February 14. —Emma Casley, TV Programming Manager
