KQED public media has been informing, inspiring and involving the San Francisco Bay Area for 70 years. To celebrate our anniversary this year, we’re revisiting memorable moments from the past.
In 1991, Chef Jacques Pépin teamed up with KQED on the cooking series Today’s Gourmet for distribution on PBS. Pépin’s career took off, and the superstar chef produced many series with KQED for PBS over the next quarter century. Today, he continues to partner with us through his KQED YouTube series Jacques Pépin Cooking at Home and Ask Jacques
Ever since watching Ken Burns’ The American Buffalo, a cinematographic triumph that examines the interconnected history of humans and bison, I’ve been dazzled by the power of documentaries. When I learned that filmmaker Vianet Djenguet was debuting a new featurelength documentary about gorillas in the Congo, I knew it would be something special. An observational film, Nature: Silverback follows Vianet as he chronicles grueling, yet vital efforts by conservationists to habituate a family of Eastern lowland gorillas in danger of extinction. If the gorillas become comfortable in the presence of Vianet and other humans, they can remain in their habitat and live freely even while tourists visit; tourism will provide an income source to help protect the gorillas and their natural environment.
For Vianet and his team, the biggest challenge is winning over Mpungwe, the family’s 35-yearold patriarch, a notoriously protective, 450-pound silverback. Spending three months in the dense forests of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Vianet learns what it takes to communicate and earn Mpungwe’s trust. A truly fascinating journey and visually stunning film, Silverback brings us inside a modern-day conservation effort to create lasting bonds between humans and animals in the wild. Of the experience, Vianet says, “It just reminds me that we are so close to these creatures and they’re doing incredible work for us. They are the gardeners of those forests that release oxygen for us.” You will not want to miss this extraordinary story. Be sure to tune in on Wednesday, October 23, at 8pm on KQED 9, or stream it live on the KQED App. Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

Hoping to investigate potential biological causes for Einstein’s brilliance, Dr. Thomas Harvey kept the brain for decades before returning it (not entirely intact) to the hospital.

With an all-star cast of Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt, this series dramatically reframes American history through the eyes of some of its most memorable first ladies. I enjoyed watching Gillian Anderson as a revelatory Eleanor Roosevelt; the series delves deep into her personal and political life. The old-fashioned costumes are epic, and they help bring this intriguing story to life. These were eras of economic unrest, and it’s refreshing to see the passion these women exuded; they continued to advance their voices until they were heard. Get exclusive access to the first five episodes October 1 with Passport, before the broadcast premiere this fall. —Emily Horne, Finance Associate
