Dear Friends,

We’re in the final stretch of a year that has been hallmarked by much strife, division and conflict. As we move ahead at KQED, we are reflecting on light. Light is illumination. It helps us see one another. It symbolizes hope. KQED exists to light the way for our communities, and for 70 years, Bay Area families like yours have lighted the way for KQED to provide essential news, storytelling and connection.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all of us at KQED, thank you. We are grateful to you for standing by this service. As you consider your year-end charitable priorities, we hope you will continue to light the way with KQED.

There are many ways you can lend your support — from donating an unused vehicle, to securing a matching gift from your employer, directing an IRA Qualified Charitable Donation or donating appreciated securities.

No matter what is ahead, KQED will be here for you, invested in illuminating complex issues; seeing past differences to find common ground; offering hope through knowledge and understanding. Your light helps this service and our community shine.

With gratitude, Michael J. Isip, President & CEO

Moments in Time: 70 Years at KQED

KQED public media has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area for 70 years, taking people of all ages on journeys to discover new communities, places and ideas. To celebrate our anniversary this year, we’re revisiting memorable moments from the past.

James Day and Jonathan Rice, KQED’s founders, ran KQED Public Television out of a station wagon until moving into a Post Street office. The young station made a name for itself by airing the famous 1958 Teller-Pauling debate on nuclear fallout as well as bold programming about homosexuality, racial prejudice and communism.

Sister Boniface Mysteries

If you’re a British murder-mystery buff like I am, you may remember first being introduced to Sister Boniface in Season 1 of Father Brown back in 2013. The lovable, crime-fighting nun made her television debut in Episode 6, when she helped the lovable, crime-fighting priest solve a double murder at a Catholic convent. It was an exciting storyline that left viewers wanting more. Nine years later, the devout detective returned with a series of her own: Sister Boniface Mysteries.

Set in the fictional town of Great Slaughter (an apt name for a village prone to villainous crime), Sister Boniface Mysteries is now on its third season, and the premiere is a two-part holiday special. Titled “The Star of the Orient,” the episode gives a nod to Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and, in proper Hercule Poirot form, Sister Boniface’s eccentricities give her an edge in unraveling the mystery. She finds herself stranded on a snowbound train when a precious jewel is stolen, and a passenger is murdered. Alongside the dashing Detective Inspector Sam Gillespie, our godly gumshoe puts her forensic science degree to good use. Back in the village, the Reverend Mother is leading a search party through the fierce blizzard while Detective Sergeant Felix Livingstone and Woman Police Constable Peggy Button are tracking down the identity of a frozen corpse. With time running out, it’s a race to ensure everyone’s safety before the dawn of Christmas morning.

If you’re not only a British murder-mystery buff but also a trivia fan, it may be entertaining to know that the creator of Sister Boniface Mysteries, Jude Tindall, was also the creator of Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators and a lead writer for Father Brown, having penned 15 episodes, including the one that gave our favorite nun her debut. While Jude passed away in August of this year, her whimsical characters live on and we’re excited to bring this new season to KQED viewers. Cozy up under a warm blanket, turn on the twinkle lights and be sure to tune in for Sister Boniface Mysteries starting on Monday, December 16, at 8pm on KQED Plus. —Elyce Berrigan, Managing Editor

MISS SCARLET, SEASON 5

Visiting my family over the holidays can often mean arguing over what to watch. But luckily, this year I think I have an option that will be a definite crowd-pleaser: Season 5 of Miss Scarlet. Whether you’re watching for the clever mysteries, the period costumes or to see Eliza’s relationship develop with the new straightlaced detective inspector, this season has something for everyone. Passport members get an extra special present this holiday season: early access to the whole season on December 5, ahead of its broadcast premiere in January. —Emma Casley, TV Programming Manager
