Free Museum Days for KQED Members Experience new exhibits at the Asian Art and de Young museums. Join KQED at the Asian Art Museum to view Yoga: The Art of Transformation, the world’s first major art exhibition exploring yoga’s fascinating history and its transformation into a global phenomenon. Highlights include stunning masterpieces of Indian sculpture and painting; pages from the first illustrated book of yoga postures; and a Thomas Edison film, Hindoo Fakir (1902), the first American movie ever produced about India. On Thursday, April 10, admission is free for KQED members plus one guest (total of two persons per MemberCard) who present a valid KQED MemberCard and photo ID at the museum entrance. From 1918 until the early 1930s, Georgia O’Keeffe retreated annually to Alfred Stieglitz’s family estate on Lake George in upstate New York, where she found respite in the rural setting. From magnified botanical compositions to panoramic landscapes, the works in the de Young Museum’s exhibition Modern Nature: Georgia O’Keeffe and Lake George offer a deeper understanding of the spirit of place that was essential to O’Keeffe’s artistic evolution. On Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19, admission is free for KQED members who present a current KQED MemberCard and valid ID (up to two tickets total). Tickets are based on availability day-of only, on site, and are timed. kqed.org/memberday

Are you ready to discover more of the Bay Area’s best eateries? The ninth season of Check, Please! Bay Area premieres this month, featuring guests and cuisine as diverse as the area itself — from Nordic and northern Indian to down-home dishes from America’s deep South and mouth-watering fare from two food trucks. In each episode of the James Beard and Emmy Award–winner, three local diners are cast as restaurant critics and share their favorite spots. Host Leslie Sbrocco (thirstygirl, Today Show) leads the conversation, adding humor and fun. “This season will not disappoint,” assures Sbrocco. “We have controversy, characters and loads of fun, as well as plenty of wine. I wish every viewer could be on set to see the behindthe-scenes hilarity that happens during shooting. Some of my favorite guests of all the seasons are on this year. And the restaurants rock too.” Adds Series Producer Tina Salter, “Each season, my respect and admiration deepens for the hardworking, dedicated owners and chefs of the eateries we visit. I walk out at the end of an evening of shooting, but they continue to work to make every diner’s experience a memorable one.”

A new multimedia series from The Center for Investigative Reporting and KQED takes viewers and listeners inside California police departments where new technologies being used to fight crime are also raising concerns about privacy. The tools, which range from automated license plate readers to facial recognition to social media monitoring systems, greatly expand the data and databases officers have at their fingertips. State of Surveillance examines real-time monitoring already in use in Los Angeles and hotly debated in Oakland.
Law enforcement agencies say that many of the technologies are making it easier to solve and, in some cases, prevent crime. But privacy advocates warn that these expanded databases are becoming dragnets and are increasingly populated with information about law-abiding citizens. In addition to the half-hour television program, listen for radio stories on The California Report and watch for features on KQEDNews.org. State of Surveillance premieres Friday, April 11, at 8pm on KQED 9.
From High-Tech Bikes to Reviving Extinct Species QUEST, the Emmy Award-winning multimedia science series produced by KQED and its five public media partner stations, premieres four new television episodes in April. Host Simran Sethi, an award-winning journalist and educator who teaches and reports on sustainability and environmental issues, joins a team of reporters from public media stations across the country (in California, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Washington and Wisconsin) to tell innovative and revealing stories about the science of sustainability. The first half-hour program, “Inventing the Future: Bikes, Bugs and Fashionistas” (April 2), follows innovators building sun-powered “carcycles,” turning flies into fish food and transforming corn into fashion. On April 9, “Keeping It Cool: Sea Otters, New Cars and Old Forests” examines how sea otters, hydrogen-powered cars and old-growth forests are helping to battle climate change. Then on April 16, “Back to the Wild: Wolves, Seeds and Snapshots” tracks wolves from their prey’s point of view and explores seed diversity and Great Plains photography. Finally, on April 23, don’t miss “Reawakening Extinct Species,” which investigates new genetic technologies that are making it possible for scientists to attempt de-extinction and asks if it’s right to turn back the clock. “I am thrilled to be a part of this new QUEST series that’s helping make connections between science and all that helps sustain us: from food and water to climate and energy,” says Simran. “This work, these innovations and this co-created future belong to all of us.” Discover QUEST’s television episodes, radio reports, blog posts and Web extras online any time. kqed.org/quest Watch new episodes of QUEST Wednesdays at 7:30pm beginning April 2 on KQED 9. Students in the 21st century aren’t just expected to master the ability to read and write. They’re also being asked to build digital literacy skills. KQED has created a tool that helps students practice civic engagement and hone their digital literacy skills while connecting topics in their classes to the present day. Created by Matthew Williams, KQED’s educational technologist, Do Now is a weekly online activity allowing students to engage and respond to current issues using social media tools like Twitter. A new Do Now is posted on KQED.org twice a week. There’s a brief introduction to the topic and a media resource that can be played directly on the website. At the top of the activity, there’s a question (How Can Women Continue the Fight for Gender Equality? for example) for students to respond to either via Twitter or in the comments section of the website. Matt came up with the idea in 2011 and gave it a trial run at a San Francisco high school. “The first day I brought some laptops and mobile devices and gave a little overview. I showed the students the prompt, talked a bit about social media and had them respond. They just went nuts. They were on top of each other tweeting and using their phones. They were totally engaged. It was amazing.” Matt adds, “For the most part, teachers take the prompt we give and that’s their road map: ‘My students are going to answer that question.’ But I think they can be flexible in how they interpret the question. An English language arts teacher reading To Kill a Mockingbird could approach it as ‘What would Atticus Finch think about this?’ I think the absurdity is actually rich.” There are now more than 150 schools participating across the country. “We average 1,800 to 2,000 tweets a week to @KQEDedspace with a specific hashtag, and we get from 100 to 500 comments in the comments section.”

Ken Burns tells the story of a tiny school in Putney, VT, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite the Gettysburg Address. In its exploration of Greenwood — whose students, boys ages 11–17, all face a range of complex learning differences — the film also unlocks the history, context and importance of President Lincoln’s most powerful address.
