She added, “If you’ve been watching Roadshow for a long time, you’ve watched the market change. While Victorian furniture was pretty hot when we started the show 19 years ago, one of my favorite appraisals from Santa Clara was a modern table and chair set by the self-taught Southern California furniture maker Sam Maloof. The woman who brought it had inherited it from her mother, who’d ordered it in 1969. I won’t give it away, but I will say that the appraisal was five figures. “I was also interested to see several pieces of what you might call Judaica, including, in the first hour, a German silver menorah. In hour two, there’s a story that I love about a letter written by a soldier from Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. The letter doesn’t have a lot of value, but
the story is precious. And in hour three, we heard a very powerful story from the concentration camps. The guests’ mother was a camp survivor who’d saved paintings by Franz Peter Klein that he’d done on canvas potato sack bags. I’ve been producing Roadshow for 15 of its 19 years, and for all the many pieces of Tiffany or ‘fill in the blank’ we’ve seen, I know we’ve never seen a Franz Klein before. And I’m sure we’ll never see him again. The paintings told a powerful story that moved us all.” You can’t watch the show without learning about history. “History comes alive for us, and it’s often worth a lot of money,” noted Bemko. “People love to see the payoff. I love it. The audience loves it. There’s no secret that we save that big value for the last appraisal.”

Marsha Bemko has been the executive producer of Antiques Roadshow for the past 15 years, during which she’s been asked more times than she can can remember what was special about a particular city the series visited. Nevertheless, we couldn’t not ask her about the Roadshow episodes that filmed in Santa Clara last summer. She admitted, “Those of us who fly across the country filming the show often have to remind each other if something happen in one city or another. But there was no doubt, in a very positive way, that when we were taping in Santa Clara, were in California. It had a very California feel, and we saw many objects that originated in California. It doesn’t always happen that we get the flavor of the place in such a powerful way.”

KQED’s food-lover favorite Check, Please! Bay Area is celebrating its 10th season this year with guests and eateries as diverse as the Bay Area itself. Each episode of the James Beard and Emmy Award–winning program casts three local diners as restaurant critics. This season’s favorite spots range from a new Korean fusion eatery in West Oakland to a longtime Italian neighborhood joint in San Francisco and a beloved tapas restaurant in Los Gatos.
Join Check, Please! Bay Area for Its Tenth Season Host Leslie Sbrocco (thirstygirl, The Today Show) leads the conversation, adding humor and fun while sharing her wine expertise. “It’s been a wonderful, raucous ride to help take Check, Please! from season one to ten,” she notes. “Through the years, I’ve had a variety of hairstyles and necklaces, but there’s been one constant — great guests.” The 10th season of Check, Please! Bay Area premieres Thursday, April 16, at 7:30pm on KQED 9.
Cheers! Win Dinner with Leslie If you’ve ever wished you could have dinner (and a few drinks) with Check, Please! Bay Area host Leslie Sbrocco, now is your chance. Head to your favorite Check, Please! Bay Area restaurant and snap a selfie of yourself (and perhaps your pals, too) imitating the famous “Cheers!” that concludes each episode. Share it with KQED on social media with the hashtag #CheckPleaseCheers and the name of the restaurant, and you and a lucky friend could win a dinner out with our sparkling host at M.Y. China. More details will be online by April 1. kqed.org/giveaway Special thanks to our 10th anniversary Check, Please! Animal Homes New Nature series deconstructs amazing animal dwellings. Animals, like humans, need a place they can call home to provide a safe and stable place to raise a family. But they go about building it in entirely different ways. From bird nest to bear den to beaver lodge to spider web, these are homes of great complexity, constructed from a wide range of natural as well as man-made materials. A new three-part series from Nature investigates just how animals build their remarkable homes and the intriguing behaviors and social interactions that take place in and around them.
Ecologist and series host Chris Morgan serves as guide and real estate agent, evaluating and deconstructing animal abodes, looking at their materials, location, neighborhood and aesthetics. Animal Homes airs on three consecutive Wednesdays, April 8, 15 and 22, at 8pm on KQED 9.

Tony Award–winning actor Mark Rylance (Twelfth Night) and Emmy and Golden Globe–winner Damian Lewis (Homeland) star in the gripping six-part television miniseries adapted from Hilary Mantel’s best-selling novels Wolf Hall and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, both Booker Prize winners. Intrigue, showmanship and high-stakes negotiations are central to the plot of Wolf Hall, which presents an intimate and provocative portrait of Thomas Cromwell, the brilliant and enigmatic consigliere to King Henry VIII, as he maneuvers the corridors of power at the Tudor court. Told from Cromwell’s perspective, Wolf Hall follows the complex machinations and back-room dealings of this pragmatic and accomplished power broker — from humble beginnings and with an enigmatic past — who must serve king and country while dealing with deadly political intrigue, Henry VIII’s tempestuous relationship with Anne Boleyn and the religious upheavals of the Protestant reformation.
Over the past year, thanks to the surging Bay Area economy, Oakland saw the second-largest rent increases in the nation. What will the higher cost of living mean for longtime residents and businesses? How are local artists and arts organizations faring? On Wednesday, April 22, as part of KQED’s Boomtown series, Forum with Michael Krasny will broadcast live from the Oakland Museum of California, featuring a discussion with local leaders, artists and residents about how the city is coping with the dramatic economic changes. Free admission to the Oakland Museum of California, including the new exhibition Who is Oakland?, is available to Forum guests.

radio professionals, and although we can offer some limited coaching, the best advice we can offer is to relax, have fun and pretend you’re having a conversation with a friend or family member. Of course, the Perspectives format does impose one, unalterable condition — the essays can’t be longer than two minutes. Meeting this mark is often the most pressing and occasionally the most painful part of editing. Once we know we have a twominute text, the author comes to KQED to record. For many, the experience of being in a professional recording studio is exciting and memorable. This is where the rubber meets the road, and our engineers are a fantastic and essential part of Perspectives, guiding the author to making the piece as good as it can be. I have had the privilege of sharing this journey with thousands of really good people who have interesting things to say and their own ways of saying it. Giving them a platform to share their thoughts with our public radio community has been deeply satisfying. — Mark Trautwein, Perspectives editor
KQED Public Radio
As the editor of KQED’s Perspectives, I have the enviable job of handing out a cool experience to good people. It starts when a listener decides he or she has something to say to KQED’s audience and is moved to write us. It wasn’t always this way. Perspectives began more than 20 years ago as a series of weekday commentaries by five people selected by KQED. Participation grew gradually, and when I became editor in 1999, about a dozen “regulars” were guaranteed a slot every four to six weeks. Today, only our valued collabora-
tions with Youth Radio and naturalist Michael Ellis remain of the regulars. The rest, about 260 original Bay Area Perspectives produced each year, come from unsolicited audience submissions. On average, about half of all the authors aired each year have never done a Perspectives before. I’m often asked, “What are you looking for?” But beyond “a good idea, well-expressed,” it isn’t my job as editor to pick topics I think the audience should hear. It’s to pick submissions authors feel strongly enough to write about and audiences are open to. I look for good, clean writing that makes a point. Most submissions require some editing, and I consider this editorial process to be a conversation. I never forget that these pieces aren’t mine and they should say what the author wants them to say, not what I would like them to say. Also, radio essays are not just words on a page. They are voices in the ear. Radio prefers shorter, simpler sentences and a more conversational narrative voice. The voice conveys information or impressions that aren’t necessarily on the page, but shape how and what a listener perceives. Perspectives authors are not

Death in Paradise returns for a fourth season of impossible murders set on the fictional Caribbean island of Sainte Marie. Kris Marshall is back as British Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman, initially sent to solve the shocking murder of his predecessor, DI Richard Poole. Disorganized and gawky, DI Goodman combines a particular disheveled British charm with a razor-sharp insight and has won the team over to his ways. There are more mystifying murders . . . along with plenty of sunshine.

Bird nests come in all shapes and sizes, crafted from an inexhaustible diversity of materials, including fur, grasses, leaves, mosses, sticks and twigs, bones, wool, mud, and spider silk. Each one is a remarkable work of art, built with just a beak! Animal Homes begins with a museum collection of nests, then branches out to scenes in the wild all over the world, where birds collect, compete for, reject, steal and build homes for the all-important task of protecting their eggs and raising their young.

Midsomer Murders #308 Judgment Day, Part 2.
During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, the United States had only a skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still in the country. Many Americans on the ground worried that South Vietnamese allies and friends faced imprisonment or death at the hands of the approaching North Vietnamese. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, a number of heroic Americans took matters into their own hands, engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations in a desperate effort to save as many South Vietnamese as possible.
Last Days in Vietnam premieres Tuesday, April 28, at 9pm on KQED 9.
