KQED in the Community
The world premiere retrospective of Oscar de la Renta’s work at the de Young Museum celebrates the life and career of one of fashion’s most influential designers. Curator André Leon Talley, former American editor-at-large for Vogue magazine, brings a depth of knowledge of and lifelong friendship with de la Renta that provide an unmatched perspective on the designer’s career. The retrospective, which includes more than 130 pieces, traces the rise of de la Renta’s career in Spain, where he gained his first commissions; his formative years, which he spent in the world’s most iconic fashion houses; and his eventual role as a designer for many of the most influential and celebrated personalities of the 20th and 21st centuries. On Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16, admission to the de Young Museum is free to KQED members who present a current KQED MemberCard and valid ID (up to two tickets per MemberCard). Free passes to Oscar de la Renta: The Retrospective are limited. Timed entry tickets are issued on a first come, first served basis. Tickets may not be available for immediate entry and could sell out. deyoung.famsf.org

“Jackie Robinson is the most important figure in our nation’s most important game,” said Ken Burns. “He gave us our first lasting progress in civil rights since the Civil War, and ever since I finished my Baseball series in 1994, I’ve been eager to make a stand-alone film about the life of this courageous American. There was so much more to say not only about Robinson’s barrierbreaking moment in 1947, but about how his upbringing shaped his intolerance for any form of discrimination and how after his baseball career, he spoke out tirelessly against racial injustice, even after his star had begun to dim.” The film Jackie Robinson is also a warm portrait of a loving and devoted husband and father, featuring extensive interviews with Robinson’s widow, Rachel, and their surviving children, Sharon and David, who witnessed firsthand how resistant society could be to equality for African Americans, even in the case of their enormously popular father. “We were incredibly lucky to have Rachel Robinson sit for three extraordinary on-camera interviews and open her personal archive of photographs,” said co-director Sarah Burns. “Her grace and eloquence elevate the family drama of their lives to a central focus in our film, and her recollections open up a window into Jackie’s private life that is rarely seen. Thanks to her contributions and interviews with Sharon and David, the film is not only about baseball and civil rights, but is also a powerful portrait of an African American family navigating the tumultuous 20th century.”

National Parks Centennial
The National Parks Service is turning 100! How will you celebrate?
What better way to honor the history of our national parks than by watching (or rewatching) the documentary series that tells their story? It’s the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. The six-part film The National Parks: America’s Best Idea airs at 9pm, Monday, April 25, through Saturday, April 30, on KQED 9.
Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Subaru, Holland America Line and Earthjustice are proud local sponsors of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.

On Saturday, April 23, join One Tam, Friends of Mt. Tam, the California Native Plant Society and KQED to celebrate Earth Day and the National Park Service’s centennial and give Mount Tamalpais some much-needed TLC. Several service projects will be hosted on and around the mountain, including at Bothin Marsh, Canyon and Moore trails at the Marin Stables, the Pantoll Ranger Station, Muir Woods, Muir Beach, and Stinson Beach. Activities include habitat restoration, trail and boardwalk maintenance, beach cleanup, and landscaping. Many of the projects are family-friendly and open to volunteers of all ages. Come solo or with a group. No experience is necessary — all the training and tools are provided. Get more information and sign up online. parksconservancy.org/mttamearthday OneTam.org

New Episodes of Check, Please! Bay Area
San Francisco Opera Returns to Television
Foodie favorite Check, Please! Bay Area returns for a new season, with new guests and new eateries celebrating the incredible diversity of the Bay Area. In each episode of the James Beard- and Emmywinning program, three local diners are cast as restaurant critics and share their favorite spots. This season’s locales include big plates of comfort food in Pinole, freshfrom-the-market oysters and seafood in San Francisco, an up-and-coming Oakland hotspot, and spicy Korean barbecue in Santa Clara. Host Leslie Sbrocco (thirstygirl, The Today Show) leads the conversation, adding humor and fun while sharing her expertise on wine and spirits. She notes, “After ten seasons, we feel incredibly knowledgeable about the Bay Area’s dining scene. Yet with each episode, we meet another foodie who introduces us to something completely new and delicious.”
The San Francisco Opera returns to KQED Television for a sixth season of spectacular high-definition performances featuring a roster of internationally renowned singers, conductors, directors and designers. Producd by KQED in association with the San Francisco Opera and hosted by celebrated mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, this year’s productions air on four consecutive Thursdays, March 31 through April 21, at 8pm on KQED 9.

Arts
Show Boat: Poignant love and racial injustice are portrayed in a grand production of a true American classic by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. Starring Bill Irwin, Heidi Stober, Michael Todd Simpson and Morris Robinson. Norma: Broken vows, lies and secrets doom an exalted Druid high priestess bent on peace. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky gives a brilliant performance in the title role. Susannah: Inspired by a biblical tale, this is one of the most original and successful American operas. Patricia Racette sings the title role of a free-spirited young woman accused of a deep sin whose fate is determined by the new preacher. Cinderella: It’s the well-known story of a downtrodden sister who marries a prince. In Rossini’s comic take on the classic tale, Carlos Chausson plays the mean stepfather, with Karine Deshayes as Cinderella. Funding for KQED Arts is provided by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the California Arts Council.

Education
KQED Public Radio KQED Public Television
What happens when you challenge students to solve problems using engineering? You get a lot of creative concepts from some very creative kids. In fall 2015, middle and high school students from across the country were invited to share their ideas for solving a problem at home, at school or in their community through KQED’s #EngineerThat challenge. “We created #EngineerThat as a fun way for educators and youth to get their feet wet with the engineering design process,” explains Andrea Aust, KQED’s senior manager of science education. “We loved seeing what they came up with — everything from a system to promote more efficient hand washing to an app for tracking extra-credit points.” The youth identified problems, defined the criteria and constraints for solving them, and devised solutions. They then created videos, infographics and drawings, which they shared online using the hashtag #EngineerThat. Members of the Teen Think Tank, a teen advisory group from the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, were the judges for the challenge. Engineering is a key part of the Next Generation Science Standards, providing students with the skills needed to tackle current and future societal and environmental challenges. KQED’s education department is committed to supporting the standards with real-life, media-rich experiences and resources for educators and students. The Teen Tank’s five favorite entries are featured online, along with the two teams that were the audience favorites. kqed.org/engineerthat

KQED and MindShift are proud to present Stories Teachers Share, a new podcast that takes a behind-the-scenes look at teaching experiences. Stories Teachers Share is hosted by MindShift Senior Editor Ki Sung and editor and blogger Katrina Schwartz. In the podcast, Ki and Katrina put teachers’ voices, opinions and experiences front and center. The first season showcases a range of stories, from a shocking discovery made by an English teacher following a creative writing assignment to the brutally honest questions asked by adolescent boys during sex ed. “Teaching is a deeply personal profession,” notes Ki. “Teachers give so much of themselves to their students — they nurture relationships and trust with students, something the public doesn’t always get to see or hear without their stories.” Adds Katrina, “This podcast paints a picture of the men and women who spend more than six hours a day with our children; but it also reveals how each of us is a teacher or a student at different times in our lives.” Listen to the stories that only teachers can share. If you have an experience you’d like to share, email MindShiftStories@kqed.org.

+ Truth Be Told airs Mondays at 11am in April. Check, Please! Bay Area airs Sunday, April 17 and Sunday, April 24 at 6:30pm.
On Q April 2016
Distributed nationally by Public Radio International, Truth Be Told features stories from people around the country followed by a discussion with guests about what might have been done differently and how to increase our understanding of one another. Truth Be Told doesn’t sanitize the issues or use euphemisms. Instead, the show embraces (with empathy) the difficulty and awkwardness that often arises in these candid conversations. Together we’ll search for insights to improve how we see one another.
Truth Be Told Live! KQED and San Francisco State University’s Womyn’s Center invite you to a live Truth Be Told event — a conversation about race and dating. KQED’s Joshua Johnson will talk to experts and students of color about topics including sexual stereotypes, sexual racism and online dating. Come join the discussion! Thursday, April 28 12-2pm — Free San Francisco State University

Talking about race, culture and equity can be risky — mistakes can hurt. Still, having the conversation is worth it if you can find understanding at the end. That’s where KQED’s special radio series Truth Be Told comes in. Each week, Truth Be Told host Joshua Johnson delves deeply into culture, identity and connection with audience members who share personal stories of when interactions involving race or culture went wrong.

As India’s population booms, its legendary wildlife has been squeezed almost out of existence. But the commitment of the Indian people to preserve their wildlife is surprising — even leading to bringing back what has been lost. Against a backdrop of teak forest, farmland and villages, Nature “India’s Wandering Lions” explores the extraordinary story of Asia’s last lions and their recovery from near extinction.

The Trojan Horse was the ultimate sneak attack, bringing a city that had withstood nine years of battle to its knees. But is it simply a work of fiction? Or did the Greeks really trick the Trojans into defeat with a giant wooden horse that concealed enough soldiers to reduce the powerful city to rubble? Secrets of the Dead “The Real Trojan Horse” follows a team of historians, military engineers and archaeologists as they examine the physical evidence to discover the truth behind the myth.
