KQED’s Check, Please! Bay Area begins a new season this month with new guests, new eateries and new beverage ideas. Tag along with local-residents-turned-restaurant-critics as they check out a casual hole in the wall serving up burgers dressed in skirts. Try hip spots preparing traditional, fiery food from Thailand, street fare from Vietnam and traditional Mexican flavors. Relax at old-school locations and listen in on conversations about food from Lithuania, Turkey, Iraq, Italy and the Caribbean. Each episode of the James Beard– and Emmy-winning program celebrates the incredible diversity of the Bay Area. Host Leslie Sbrocco (thirstygirl, The Today Show) leads the conversation, adding humor and fun while sharing her expertise on wine and spirits. “It never ceases to amaze me — even after 13 years of production — just how many restaurants there are left to explore in the Bay Area,” she remarks. “We’ve only scratched the surface of eateries to enjoy. I consider myself lucky to share my passion for food, wine and drinks with our viewers.”

News
Since the Trump administration began, KQED has been working nonstop to deliver the most comprehensive news and analysis possible while also introducing new spaces for spirited and civil debate and conversation to help us all better understand this turbulent world — and each other. We’ve dispatched our teams locally and nationally to bring you breaking coverage as events unfold, such as the the inauguration in Washington, D.C., national women’s marches and the chaos that ensued at airports in the wake of the immigration ban. On The California Report, we’ve been featuring a new “Start the Conversation” series, which brings pairs of Californians together to talk about their different perspectives on issues. And we recently featured a series of Eye to Eye radio specials, responding to listeners’ desire to talk with people from different backgrounds about the widening political divides in their everyday lives. Meanwhile, the KQED Arts team launched First 100 Days: Art in the Age of Trump, which highlights the powerful ways artists are expressing their voices in the moment.
KQED News is supported by the James Irvine Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation, the Westly Foundation, the Reva and David Logan Foundation, the California Endowment, and the members of KQED. 4
We have also partnered with the Commonwealth Club to host a series of live events examining the first 100 days of the Trump presidency. And Forum will soon debut “Swap Talk,” a series of live conversations organized with other stations across the country, which will enable our listeners to talk with hosts and guests in other regions. All of these initiatives to better serve our entire community have been made possible by your continued support of KQED. KQED is devoted to accuracy, facts, and supporting an informed, engaged and connected community. At KQED, we believe accountability and explanatory journalism is more important than ever — and we are trying our best to bring you more of it. — Holly Kernan, vice president, KQED News

KQED Pop Explores Identity and Privilege in the United States She adds, “Driving across the country and seeing how homogeneous many cities — and even states — are, I began to really understand why people are having such a hard time understanding privilege. It’s contextual. If someone is Mormon and their whole town is also Mormon, it’s harder to grasp the privilege of being within a religious majority because you’re practically swimming in it. Just like if your whole town is white and you’re white, you are not seeing the larger context of what it means to have white privilege.”
What’s more worthy of discussion? A Virginia Woolf novel or a breakup song by Taylor Swift? The answer is . . . both! Now in its second season, The Cooler, KQED’s weekly pop culture podcast, has tackled Old Hollywood feuds, the history of selfies, the Kennedy curse, the story of a married woman who hid a secret lover in the attic for a decade and so much more. Head over to kqed.org/thecooler or iTunes to start listening.

Mapping Privilege, a new monthly column on KQED Pop, explores identity and privilege through conversations with people across the country, from Standing Rock to Los Angeles to Cincinnati. Series creator Luna Malbroux, a local comedian, diversity consultant and app creator (and one of KQED’s 2016 Women to Watch) explains that she’s talking to people whose narratives you don’t always hear. “For instance, within communities of color, there are varying levels of privilege based on skin tone, language and class. And I feel like, overall, there has been a complete dismissal of people living with disabilities in the national conversation about privilege.”

Science
Deep Look — New Season, New Host
When did you start working at KQED? I started at KQED more than 10 years ago, when our science series QUEST first began. The project has grown and changed since then, but the core of smart, dedicated science producers and editors has stayed the same. I’ve loved working on the science team, and KQED has made a really amazing commitment to quality science reporting. Why did you want to host Deep Look? The series is all about the wonder in the natural world. There are so many surprising, weird and beautiful stories to uncover, even in things we encounter every day. You don’t have to be interested in science to find a Deep Look episode that’s captivating. And the visuals, because we shoot in ultra high definition, are pretty amazing.
What has surprised you about hosting the series? The lengths the producers go to for the visuals are amazing. Shooting the extreme close-ups takes patience and skill, especially when dealing with wild animals. Cinematographer Josh Cassidy creates beautiful visuals. And sometimes that involves some weird things — like keeping a pill bug terrarium on his desk. What do you enjoy about being host? As a radio reporter, I’m usually out in the field solo, gathering interviews and finding news. It’s been a lot of fun collaborating on writing scripts and shaping stories. I’ve also been covering major news stories lately, like drought and floods, so sometimes it’s nice to think about lighter things, like an octopus’s suckers.
Is there a particular story you are looking forward to telling? We’re working on a story now about the amazing sex lives of snails. It’s anything but tame – and who would think that about an ordinary garden snail? They actually fire “love darts” at each other. It was a lot of fun to write the script with producer Elliott Kennerson, but it definitely took a bit of finesse to describe the . . . um . . . action. New three-minute episodes are released twice a month, so check out Deep Look and subscribe on YouTube. kqed.org/deeplook

Get ready for more weirdly wonderful videos from KQED’s award-winning YouTube science series Deep Look, on the PBS Digital Studios network. Deep Look’s videos are shot in ultra-HD (4K) and use macro cinematography and video microscopy to explore big science concepts by going very small. Quirky and bewildering topics include octopus suckers and how they can actually taste and smell; cats’ specially designed tongues; and snail “love darts.” In addition to new stories, Deep Look has a new host: KQED’s Lauren Sommer, a talented storyteller and an award-winning science radio reporter who can make the most obscure science concept clear and entertaining. Lauren took time out from behind the microphone to answer a few questions.

How can teens better distinguish fact from fiction at a time when clickbait, fake news and divided politics proliferate the Internet, social media and airwaves? Above the Noise, KQED Learning’s new weekly YouTube series, cuts through the hype and dives deep into the science behind the issues affecting young viewers’ daily lives. Hosts Myles Bess and Shirin Ghaffary take a closer look at topics that are often sensationalized or distorted in the media, examining the latest research to inspire young viewers to draw informed conclusions, strengthen their media literacy skills and become interested in civic engagement. Above the Noise videos examine wide-ranging questions, such as whether energy drinks should be banned for kids and teens; how data impacts racial bias in the criminal justice system; and whether social media platforms like Snapchat influence mood. Episodes incorporate animation, music, news and archival footage to analyze multiple perspectives and make complex subject matter relatable and relevant to teens’ everyday experience. Audience engagement is key to the series. Every other week there is an episode called “Above and Beyond the Noise,” in which the hosts respond to viewers’ comments and questions and invite special guests to explore topics even further.

Brokenwood Mysteries airs Fridays at 8pm beginning April 7 on KQED Plus.
On Q April 2017
Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) arrives on assignment in Brokenwood, a small town where memories — and animosities — run deep. He’s an experienced cop with a 1971 classic car, a collection of country music cassettes and an indeterminate number of ex-wives. The new woman in his life is his assistant, Detective Constable Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland), a by-the-book investigator nearly 20 years younger than her boss’s car who quickly has to get used to his lone-wolf ways.

The Last Laugh proceeds from the premise that the Holocaust would seem to be an absolutely off-limits topic for comedy. But is it? History shows that even the victims of the Nazi concentration camps used humor as a means of survival and resistance. The film weaves together an intimate portrait of Auschwitz survivor Renee Firestone alongside interviews with influential comedians and thinkers ranging from Mel Brooks, Sarah Silverman and Gilbert Gottfried to authors Etgar Keret and Shalom Auslander. Independent Lens “The Last Laugh” airs Monday, April 24, at 10pm on KQED 9.
