Founded in the early 1980s, the San Jose street dance crew Playboyz Inc. helped develop the Bay Area underground tradition of “strutting” and “popping,” which include intricate movements of some of the body’s tiniest muscles. We meet the newest generation of Playboyz Inc. from the neighborhoods of East San Jose, where Latino, African American, Asian and Samoan dancers come together to evolve a fresh new style. The dancers share their reflections on the pride and identity they infuse into their choreography and comment on the enthusiasm of street dancers around the world for this Bay Area original art form.

Detroit choreographer and dancer Erika “Red” Stowall (pictured on cover and above) started dancing at the age of four. She focused on African and Caribbean traditions and later studied jazz, tap, ballet and contemporary dance interpretations. Stowall showcases her blend of styles (movement she calls “mutt” or “gumbo”) in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood, including in front of the old Michigan Central Station train depot. Through her dance company Big Red Wall, Stowall creates dances that empower women to reclaim their safety and power.

Los Angeles-based contemporary dancers Lilia Ontiveros and Roberto Lamubren, both with family roots in Mexico, present their performances against the backdrop of a busy produce market in downtown Los Angeles. The market’s vendors, products and customers represent countries from all over the world, and the dancers focus on the influence of migration across greater Los Angeles while including themes of their own immigrant stories. This episode is choreographed by Heidi Duckler, whose dance company — which is based in downtown Los Angeles — has created movement experiences in nontraditional spaces for 30 years.

If Cities Could Dance, a new online video series from KQED Arts, features dancers performing outside traditional performance spaces and in unconventional urban settings, from an open-air produce market to a historic train station to city streets. Each episode tells an intimate, personal story about the artists and their deep-rooted relationships to their community. The eightpart series highlights dancers in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, as well as in Detroit, Portland, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Baltimore and New York, celebrating dance styles unique to each urban area. The series is funded with a special grant from the Oakland-based Kenneth Rainin Foundation.

Start Your Day With The Bay

How did The Bay originate? I started in radio almost ten years ago, and I’ve always wanted a show that brings people along on an adventure. I thought it would be cool to listen to a news program that showed those moments of uncertainty, transparency and discovery, almost hearing the story unfold as it happens. The Bay team has been lucky enough to develop our show from scratch based off our belief that people want smart, creative stories that help them understand the Bay Area. 4

How is The Bay different from other podcasts? The Bay wants to break down the reporter/ audience barrier and let everyone inside our reporting process. We are trying to marry short-term narrative and daily news, which means listeners get the urgency of what’s happening around the Bay, but will be more engaged with the story — all in under ten minutes. What excites you most about it? I’m most excited about working alongside Vinnee Tong and Erika Aguilar — two producers who like to think deeply about the true meaning of news. As part of our production process, we spend a fair amount of time sharing our own experiences and analyzing why some news is deeper than just the headline. For example, the North Bay fires created a second wave of homelessness. What does that mean to a city that was already struggling to serve homeless people?

How are you and the production team going to produce a four-times-per-week podcast? Producing four episodes a week is a hustle. A lot goes into a 5-10 minute show. The Bay team is tapped into what reporters are working on and anticipating what news may happen. We’re flexible enough to jump on breaking news, but we don’t consider ourselves a breaking news show. Tune in to KQED 88.5 FM or visit kqed.org if you want to know what’s happening now; play our show if you want to know what it means. Start listening to The Bay by subscribing on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts, or visit kqed.org/thebay. KQED’s new podcast The Bay stems from the idea that every good story starts local. Host Devin Katayama talks with the reporters and people directly affected by the news to go deeper into the stories that help to define the Bay Area. Published four times a week, The Bay mines the personal impact of the stories to reveal the humanity behind the headlines. Katayama sat down with On Q to tell us more about The Bay.

School, Menlo-Atherton High School, Palo Alto High School, Richmond High School, Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, San Leandro High School and Santa Clara High School. KQED News has long valued and featured youth telling their stories and takes this latest step with great commitment to carving out more space for voices of the next generation. John Sepulvado, host of The California Report, adds: “When we say we’re public media, we mean we’re public media. We’re encouraging them to join us — and whether it’s for a week, a month, a year or, like me, have a lifelong commitment to public media, we’re all richer for their involvement.” Selected stories will broadcast on air as part of KQED’s regular programming and will be published online. Every student story, including those not broadcasted due to limited time slots, will be accessible online at The Lowdown (kqed.org/lowdown). So don’t adjust the dial when you hear numerous youth voices over the airwaves during the last week of April: it is KQED, and it’s a takeover.

It’s a Youth Takeover! That’s what we’re calling the week of April 23-27, when stories pitched, produced and reported by local youth will air across KQED’s news platforms. Their stories will air during local editions of Morning Edition, The California Report, Forum, KQED Newsroom and more. In preparation, staff in KQED’s Education and News departments have been collaborating with a pilot group of ten Bay Area high school journalism and English/language arts classes for the past two months. “We are in a ‘youth takeover’ moment right now that’s becoming a movement. It’s empowering to use our platforms to broadcast and elevate the voices of our youth community members in this dedicated way, where their story ideas are at the forefront,” says KQED Youth Media Manager Ariana Proehl. In February, students pitched stories to staff and journalists — including The California Report Magazine’s Sasha Khokha and KQED Newsroom Senior Producer Monica Lam — getting feedback on their story ideas. Students were then off and running to produce their stories for submission. With guidance from their teachers and KQED staff, the students’ stories took shape. They address topics such as immigration, mental health, school safety, cultural identity, and thinking about what the future holds for them when it comes to work, housing and their California dreams. Participating schools include Arise High School, El Cerrito High School, Fremont High School, Lincoln High

This Moment on Earth A new radio series explores personal stories of climate change

6

It’s tough to know what to do about climate change. It’s such a big issue, and it can seem like each of us is just one person. Many people feel overwhelmed, and many are looking for hope and solutions. That’s why KQED’s science team is launching a new radio series that will feature personal stories about climate change, This Moment on Earth. The series airs April 16-20 on KQED’s Perspectives program: on 88.5 FM every weekday at 6:43am, 8:43am, and 11:29 pm; on weekends at 7:36am and 8:36am; and online anytime. This Moment on Earth asks Californians what climate change means to them and how they are responding to it and experiencing it in their own unique way — emotionally, intellectually, even physically. Listeners will hear funny, poignant, passionate conversations on what kind of sustainable future people

envision, why it’s so tough to become a vegan for the planet, a way to handle the tough emotions climate change raises, how scientific research is saving frogs in the Sierra Nevada and more. Kat Snow, KQED’s senior science editor and cocreator of This Moment on Earth, encourages you to submit your climate change story. “We want to explore together with our audience the heart of the question climate change poses for humanity: how do we live on this one Earth, together? How can we evolve personally and collectively to live in a way that enhances life, rather than diminishes its potential? Californians are inventive and visionary people who have a lot to offer to one another and the country, and we want to hear from you.”

KQED Science is launching this series daily in the days leading up to Earth Day on April 22. Beyond the special week of programming, This Moment on Earth will be an ongoing radio and online series showcasing inspiring and thoughtprovoking stories of climate change. Climate change is everyone’s story; visit kqed.org/thismomentonearth to contribute yours.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Makes about 3 dozen cookies

Drop the dough by heaping tablespoonfuls onto the baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake until the edges are golden brown and the top looks firm, about 14 minutes. Let cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container. (The cookies are best the day they are made, but will last for up to three days.)

Walls and Bridges: Understanding 2018 kicks off Tuesday, April 10, at the Chinese Cultural Center in San Francisco

with a discussion on the rise of alt-right extremism, and continues on Thursday, April 12, at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts with a discussion on the topic of #MeToo’s effect on workplace culture. kqed.eventbrite.com Support for this event is provided by the James Irvine Foundation.

For many, 2017 was a year of shocks. We saw some of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. We witnessed a president with little political experience take office and operate far outside the traditional norms of American leadership. We saw the voices of thousands of women take down some of the most powerful men in media and politics. We saw the country become increasingly divided — politically, economically and socially. As we look forward through 2018, KQED will present a free, six-part series

Every day, the team at Morning Edition is on the front lines of breaking news. We live in complicated times, and I am genuinely excited to be given the chance to ask questions of leaders at the centers of power, while also shining a spotlight on ordinary people who are affected by the decisions those leaders make.” In their expanded roles, King and Chang will continue their enterprise reporting and hosting for the Planet Money podcast.

Jesus: Countdown to Calvary premieres Sunday, April 1, at 9pm on KQED Plus.

On Q April 2018

Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, there is no denying the impact of Jesus of Nazareth, particularly the events surrounding his death, on world history. Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), a well-known actor and Cambridge theology graduate, travels to Jerusalem in search of answers. Meeting with academic experts and spiritual leaders, Bonneville deconstructs the week leading up to Jesus’ death and untangles the complex factors that resulted in his crucifixion. Exploring questions that have provided more than 2,000 years of debate, the documentary offers fascinating insight from both religious and historical angles.

If you know anything about the Fillmore neighborhood, it’s probably because it houses an auditorium of the same name, where the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead helped shaped American music in the 1960s. This documentary, produced in 1999 as part of KQED’s Peabody Award-winning series on San Francisco neighborhoods, goes even deeper to tell a dramatic story: the rise and fall — and rise again — of San Francisco’s premiere Black community. The film features a remarkable group of participants and storytellers, from mayors and musicians to journalists and community activists, who experienced the Fillmore as both the best and worst of 20th century life.

Bill Nye is on a mission to stop the spread of anti-scientific thought and action. Once the host of a popular kids’ show and now the CEO of the Planetary Society, this new documentary from PBS’ POV series follows Nye as he seeks to change the world through science. He’s shedding the “Science Guy” costume to take on those who deny the importance of science, from prominent creationist Ken Ham to climate change skeptic, meteorologist and occasional Fox News commentator Joe Bastardi. The film also features appearances by Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ann Druyan and other luminaries in the field. POV’s “Bill Nye: Science Guy” premieres Wednesday, April 18, at 10pm on KQED 9.
