Taxwise Giving It’s tax season, and although it is too late to change last year’s tax situation, planning ahead may help you reduce your taxes for 2019. If you are age 65 or older, you may benefit from a charitable gift annuity. For more information, contact us at 415.553.2230 or legacy@kqed.org. Benefits can include: • guaranteed fixed income for life • partially tax-free income • income tax deduction • reduced capital gains taxes (if appreciated securities are used to fund the gift annuity)
Example: Anna’s $20,000 certificate of deposit pays 2 percent. If she uses the $20,000 to establish a charitable gift annuity with KQED, she will receive: • tax-free income — more than 66% of Anna’s $1,120 annual income is tax free • an immediate income tax deduction of approximately $8,215 • 5.6% annuity rate for her lifetime, based on her age — 70

Inflection Point: Gloria Steinem and Favianna Rodriguez Airs Thursday, April 4, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM Inflection Point, KALW and PRX’s podcast and public radio show about how women rise up, recently hosted activist, writer and feminist organizer Gloria Steinem and Oakland-based artist and activist Favianna Rodriguez at the Castro Theatre. Listen as host Lauren Schiller talks to Steinem about her new book of essays — now in its third edition — Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions. You'll hear about how much society has changed — or not — since Gloria wrote those essays between the 1960s and the 1990s, the ongoing fight for equality and how to create the future we envision, including the value of listening to others, seeking out people not like you and the true meaning of being a radical. —Chloe Morizono
One Paycheck Away — Addressing Homelessness in the Bay Area Airs Wednesday, April 17, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM Every night, more than 130,000 people go to sleep homeless in California. An estimated 25,000 of them are in the San Francisco Bay Area: sleeping on couches, in cars or sometimes in tents on the sidewalk. At this point, people from coast to coast know that the Bay Area is in the midst of a housing crisis. But what is the city doing to address affordable housing and homelessness? Hear from some of the Bay Area’s leading experts on issues surrounding homelessness, moderated by KQED’s Mina Kim. From working on the service and legal sides to fighting for policy changes to having experienced homelessness themselves, our speakers will discuss the state of the crisis, how we got here and where we’re headed next. —Chloe Morizono

One of the longest, yet most engaging novels ever written, with a plot that is as relevant today as it was in the socially tumultuous 19th century, Les Misérables has enjoyed many adaptations, but few as spectacular and star-studded as this new Masterpiece version. This six-part television event (not a musical) features Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) as fugitive Jean Valjean, David Oyelowo (Selma, Small Island) as his relentless pursuer Javert, Lily Collins (Love, Rosie) as Fantine and recent Best Actress Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) as Madame Thénardier.
