Live One Night Only In the early 1960s, clubs like the Village Vanguard were scattered throughout Greenwich Village. Now it stands alone, the last of its kind. In September 2009, a select group of fans and friends had the rare opportunity to experience pop diva Barbra Streisand’s performance in the ultimate up-close-and-personal setting of this historic New York club. Accompanied by piano, bass, guitar, and drums, this is the artist at her most intimate. Mounted in honor of the release of her album Love Is the Answer (which hit stores on the same day the concert was shot), the set presents a combination of tunes from that record (“In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” “The Gentle Rain,” “Some Other Time”) and Streisand favorites (“Evergreen,” “The Way We Were”).
Barbra Streisand: One Night Only at the Village Vanguard first airs Saturday, August 6, at 7pm on KQED 9. See page 13 for additional airdates and times on KQED 9 and KQED Plus.

Shortly before the demolition of New York’s Shea Stadium in July 2008, superstar Billy Joel electrified audiences with two memorable concerts at the historic venue. Joel’s special guests included Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, and Sir Paul McCartney, whose 1965 appearance there marked the Beatles’ arena debut.
Jackie Evancho: Dream with Me in Concert first airs Tuesday, August 9, at 7pm on KQED Plus.
Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night airs Monday, August 29, at 8pm on KQED Plus.
Billy Joel: Live at Shea Stadium airs Wednesday, August 31, at 9:30pm on KQED 9.

Join guest conductor Valery Gergiev as he leads the Vienna Philharmonic’s third annual Summer Night concert, set in the magnificent baroque gardens of Austria’s Imperial Schönbrunn Palace. Free to thousands of attendees in Vienna, the concert serves the orchestra’s mission of bringing classical music to a broad spectrum of concertgoers beyond the usual core audience. This year’s theme revolves around “Virtuoso Pictures,” as exemplified by the works of Franz Lizst, Niccolo Paganini, Modest Mussorgsky, and Johann Strauss.

Regardless of your musical preferences, there’s no way you won’t be amazed by Jackie Evancho. Introduced to the world on the television program America’s Got Talent, the 11-year-old has a simply extraordinary soprano voice. Experience the singer’s solo concert debut, taped at the magnificent Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Fla., celebrating the release of her first full-length album, Dream with Me.

The Man Behind KQED’s TV Schedule
A version of this interview first appeared in the Spring 2011 issue of Go Public, a biannual publication for KQED’s Signal Society– and Producer’s Circle–level members.
How much flexibility do you have in deciding when to air programs? As a PBS member station, we have some requirements as to how many hours of programming we agree to air in specific time periods. A certain number of hours must be children’s programming, and other programs, like Masterpiece and Nova, must be aired during prime time (8-11pm) on specific nights. Beyond those requirements, I have the flexibility to place programs that will appeal specifically to our Northern California audience in time slots where I know they will reach the most people. Where does KQED get programs? Public television offerings are most often created by individual producers. Those producers will get a station—like KQED—to present the broadcast in order to take advantage of the marketing resources and to give the program credibility for the national market. One example is KQED’s presentation of The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!
Overall, 80 percent of KQED’s television programming comes from PBS. The other 20 percent comes from distributors like American Public Television, the National Educational Telecommunications Association, and the BBC. How do you select programs? I’m always thinking about our market and what succeeds here when I’m choosing programs. To set the schedule, I look at a grid that has timeslots filled with programs that I know will do well, and I try to complete the grid with other choices that will complement them. I also look at the Nielsen ratings every day to see what national audiences are enjoying at other PBS stations across the country. If I see that a program is doing well on another station, I’ll take our market preferences into account and I might choose it for KQED. We also put programs in the schedule because they connect with our community and fit directly with our mission. I am in the unique position of selecting films for the entire national public television system because movies do better on KQED than on any other PBS station. I work directly with movie distributors like Warner Brothers, MGM, and 20th Century Fox. Not all films are available to us, and I have to work far in advance. To keep prices reasonable, I buy film packages. The most recent package includes 100 films that will take us through September 2014.
Read On Q and Win! August marks the launch of a monthly contest especially for On Q readers from The Giveaway—KQED’s blog offering prizes and opportunities to win free tickets to events around the Bay Area. The answer to the monthly question is in On Q. What is KQED Public Radio announceroperator Sandee Althouse’s favorite public television series?

Maybe you always love what you find on KQED’s television schedule. Perhaps you sometimes scratch your head over program choices. Either way, one person spends large parts of his days carefully making those decisions (he’s been here since 1985)—Scott Dwyer, KQED’s director of programming. We asked Scott to answer a few questions about his job.
Read an expanded version of this interview, with more information about KQED’s partners, online at kqed.org/onq-exclusives.

How will a visitor to KQEDnews.org benefit from the project? Just because we can’t send a reporter to a story doesn’t mean it’s a story that shouldn’t be told, and so this gives a broader platform to those stories. Maybe you live in Menlo Park and wouldn’t normally read Berkleyside, but a story they’re reporting might resonate in your community. More and better journalism can only be a good thing, I think. Not just for KQED News listeners and readers, but for the Bay Area in general. Hopefully, we’ll be able to bring important stories to a wider audience.
KQED.org
What led KQED News to participate? We’re the only radio station to participate so far, and we’re also the only nonprofit, so it’s a great opportunity to bring a different experience and background to the project. There are so many people doing good, interesting, enterprising work in the Bay Area. It’s really exciting! And so far, our partners, even though they’re all online, have been very open to—even excited about—trying out radio.
Get magazine online: kqed.org/OnQ
Look for KQED partners’ posts in the four photo boxes across the middle of the KQEDnews.org page. That’s where KQED’s blog posts go as they’re published, and our partners will be integrated into that system. Their articles will also be accessible through the Bay Area News tab at kqed.org/news/bayarea.
Who are KQED’s partners, and how were they chosen? Our initial start-up partners are Oakland Local, Berkeleyside, and Neighbor WebSJ, San Francisco Public Press and Muni Diaries. We approached them because they do serious reporting, they were eager to experiment with us, and they’re in places where we don’t necessarily have a lot of reporting resources right now. We have a few more partners getting ready to start with us, and as the project grows, I’m looking forward to getting the word out so we can work with as many partners as are interested. If anyone has a favorite blog in his or her neighborhood or is a fan of an independent news site that covers a particular topic, I would love to hear about it! I’d like to reach out to and collaborate with as many sites as possible. Seriously, email me: msamuel@kqed.org.

What exactly is the Networked Journalism program? Networked Journalism is a grant program funded by J-Lab, a center focused on innovations in journalism that’s based at the communications department at American University. The project helps more established news organizations create partnerships with hyperlocal blogs and newer entrepreneurial local news sites. Other participants include The Seattle Times, The Oregonian, The Miami Herald, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. All told, there are nine media organizations with J-Lab grants across the country, and they’re each working with at least five partners. Overall, there’s a real spirit of experimentation behind this grant and in working with our partners—an openness to see what we can learn from each other and a curiosity about what we can do together that we couldn’t have done on our own.
KQED Public Radio
KQED News now provides even broader coverage of the Bay Area through partnerships with three local blogs—the result of KQED’s participation in Networked Journalism, a national program connecting established news organizations with blogs in their communities. KQED community news coordinator Molly Samuel took some time to discuss the program and how it will help keep you informed about what’s happening in all corners of the Bay Area.

Who better to guide you to your new favorite public media programs and Web content than a KQED staff member? Television Spark never fails to amaze me. Radio I’m always happy to hear Neal Conan and Talk of the Nation. It’s a chance to hear a conversation about national and international events with listeners from across, well, the nation. I think I’ve just summed up the show title, right? I’m also a softie for Mr. Conan’s approachable style. I also love listening to KQED’s Scott Shafer do just about anything.
Podcasts Forum is definitely the most listened to podcast in our house. It’s hard to catch the whole hour, or two, live, and sometimes it’s really tough to turn it off mid-show and get myself out of the car. Too many driveway moments can get you into trouble. KQED.org Bay Area Bites is my go-to page for all things food, especially when I’m looking for restaurants. It also augments one of my favorite parts of television—cooking shows. I grew up watching the cooking shows on Channel 9. Now I can watch a cooking program and then go look for recipes or restaurant ideas on Bay Area Bites, or vice versa.

The 40th Annual Northern California Area Emmy® Awards were presented earlier this summer in San Francisco, and we’re proud to announce that seven KQED programs won top honors. The Northern California Emmy® region is composed of television and cable stations from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nev. Out of 703 entries submitted in 59 categories, 220 were nominated (21 from KQED) and 85 received the statuette. We say it every year, but it bears repeating: Without the support of our members, none of these accolades would have been possible. Thank you.

Miami, Florida Wednesday, August 10, 8pm and Saturday, August 13, 1pm Dubbed the “Magic City” for its stunning growth rate and rapid proliferation of highrise skyscrapers, Miami is also the thirdpoorest city in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2004 numbers. If you own a store in South Beach, your customers are equally as likely to be billionaires as they are to be homeless. And on top of that, they’re very likely to have started life somewhere else. Miami is an incredibly international city—and so is impacted more than most cities by world events, such as the Haitian earthquake and the political situation in Cuba. Tune in for an hour of stories of Miamians reaching out from their enclaves to create community across those lines.

Nearly a quarter of American adults started college but didn’t finish—about 37 million people. Now they’re being left behind in an economy increasingly focused on workers with degrees. American RadioWorks producer Emily Hanford examines why so many people start college but don’t graduate, what’s being done to bring them back, and whether a college degree is the answer for everyone.

An Economist’s Guide to Parenting Thursday, August 4 at 8pm Becoming a parent means entering one of the largest seas of advice known to man. Much of it is written by amateurs. Little of it has any connection to the tools that social scientists have forged to analyze human behavior. This hour of Freakonomics Radio turns back this rollicking tide of misunderstanding with the hyperrational, unemotional techniques of economists. Can Steven Levitt incentivize his young daughter to use the toilet? Does watching TV on the sofa have the same effect on kids as going to music class? What happens when children are randomly assigned to families? We hear from a roundtable of entertaining and smart economists about what really matters as a parent and what doesn’t.
Climate One – From the Commonwealth Club Crops, Cattle, and Carbon Wednesday, August 24, 8pm After watching climate policies from the sidelines with a wary eye, the agricultural industry now wants to join the party.
