From the late 1940s until the early 1970s, The Ed Sullivan Show brought the greatest musical acts in the world into millions of America’s living rooms every Sunday night. A new My Music special features some of the most memorable performances by superstars of the mid to late ’60s. Step into a musical time machine and take a front-row seat for an amazing lineup of bands — from the Beatles and the Doors to the Mamas & the Papas, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Rivers, the Beach Boys, Tom Jones and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Rock on.
Nestled in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, Tanglewood is one of the world’s most beloved music festivals and the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) since 1937. This summer, the BSO, the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, along with conductors John Williams, Keith Lockhart and Andris Nelsons, came together for a special performance celebrating Tanglewood’s 75th anniversary. Featured soloists, including pianists Emanuel Ax and Peter Serkin, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, and vocalist James Taylor as well as the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, performed a wide-ranging program that included works by Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein.

Live Happily Ever After Now Some say that a new life stage, lying somewhere between “younger” adulthood and “old-old” adulthood is being invented right now. And it doesn’t yet have a name. If you find yourself in this stage of life, you’ve discovered there’s no roadmap — no trusted and credible place to turn
for advice, engagement and inspiration. Until now. PBS has launched a new website called Next Avenue, whose mission is to help people in their 50s and beyond shape the most meaningful and vibrant life possible for themselves. Join us at kqed.org/nextavenue to find out more.

“ I love Perspectives from young people. They’re refreshing, lively and surprising.” — M ark T rautw ein , Perspecti ves editor
In early 2012, Annie Hatch, a tenthgrade Humanities teacher at Life Academy in Oakland, contacted KQED Perspectives editor Mark Trautwein. She wondered if KQED would have any interest in her students’ perspectives. “I said absolutely,” recalls Mark. In 2009, he’d worked with a sixth-grade class at The San Francisco School and had been pleased and proud of the results. “I also told her that we had resources online to help teachers shape the project.” The result: Five of the Life Academy students’ Perspectives essays will air over the coming weeks on KQED Public Radio. A total of 15 will live
online — at kqed.org/perspectives — along with essay text and photographs of the authors. With Perspectives essays, kids are writing about something that matters to them. “Life Academy is a very different school in a different community than The San Francisco School,” notes Mark. “In the first set of essays, topics included divorce and family life. These first five from Life Academy include perspectives from a young man on gun violence in Oakland; a girl being bullied because of her hair; and a young woman with three perspectives — as an American, a Latina and a Palestinian.”

Mark sees this project as a representation of what’s best about KQED. “We don’t just broadcast at the public. We’re building a relationship. It’s a two-way street between the station, parents, teachers and students, and everyone is better off from the experience. It’s a flow that connects us to the community in a way that I think is noteworthy.” When kids learn about writing and self-expression, they make a connection between writing and digging down to who they are and exposing a vulnerable part of themselves. “That equals stronger writers and stronger kids,” says Mark. “That’s a skill that can serve in all walks of life.” Mark hopes to create an annual student Perspectives series. “These young people get the experience of writing about something meaningful to them, working with an editor, visiting a radio station, recording their story and hearing it on the radio. Kids don’t often get the opportunity to be listened to for two uninterrupted minutes. That’s some kind of special.”
to be entered to win a cozy KQED throw blanket, an insulated tote bag and a cool ceramic mug that changes color when it’s filled with hot liquid. For a chance to win even more prizes, visit “The Giveaway” (kqed.org/giveaway) and check out the latest contest.

“ These meet-ups gave us the opportunity to foster conversation that rejects diatribe and promotes dialogue.” — R aul Ramier z, KQED P ublic R adio’s director of ne w s and public affairs
What should the news media be covering in your community? Journalists from KQED News and The Bay Citizen, a project of the Center for Investigative Reporting, put that question to residents of five Bay Area cities this spring at a series of events called open newsrooms. Residents and reporters met in a casual atmosphere at coffeehouses and lounges to talk one-on-one about the challenges facing the Bay Area and the state and the nation. Topics included the future of neighborhood parks, development in the East Bay and the struggles of the education system.
Photos (clockwise from top left): Open newsroom attendees had the opportunity to record their comments on a KQED microphone. Jon Brooks, right, the editor of KQED’s “News Fix” blog was among those who talked with Richmond residents at an open newsroom. KQED News reporter Mina Kim, left, spoke with attendees of the Richmond open newsroom. An open newsroom at Actual Cafe in Oakland drew a crowd.
KQED.org
“Too often, public talk about government and the issues in our communities focuses on our philosophical differences,” notes Raul Ramirez, KQED Public Radio’s director of news and public affairs. “Too often we talk past each other. These meet-ups gave us the opportunity to foster conversation that rejects diatribe and promotes dialogue. It’s a conversation that helps us hear directly from local residents about the challenges they’re facing.” The open newsrooms were held in Oakland, Alameda, Menlo Park, San Jose and Richmond. KQED News is considering holding additional open newsrooms later this year. For updates, head to kqed.org/opennewsrooms.

State of the Re:Union with Al Letson The Community of Comic Books Saturday, August 4, 1pm and Thursday, August 9, 8pm In a series first, State of the Re:Union explores a vast community that’s based around a medium, rather than a geographic location. Despite the outdated stereotype of a solitary nerd holed up in his bedroom, burying himself in a world of fantasy, comic books serve as the connection point for a diverse community of people who are drawn to them for all manner of reasons. And sometimes, comics become the vehicle for people to take action within their community or inspire individuals to make a difference in the wider world.

Intelligence Squared U.S. No Fracking Way: The Natural Gas Boom Is Doing More Harm Than Good Saturday, August 11, 1pm and Wednesday, August 15, 8pm Natural gas, touted for its environmental, economic and national security benefits, is often thought of as the fuel that will “bridge” our transition from oil and coal to renewables. The ability to extract natural gas from shale formations through a method called hydraulic fracturing has unleashed vast, untapped sources — by some estimates, the United States now sits on a 100-year supply. But possible contamination from toxic chemicals used in the fracking process has been the source of increasing health and environmental concerns. Can natural gas be part of a clean energy solution or is it a dangerous roadblock to a fossil-free future?
