Just What the Doctor Ordered New medical series brings suspense, satire and smart sixties style.

Set in London in 1961, Breathless follows the exploits of doctors, nurses and spouses connected with a busy obstetrics ward at a National Health Service hospital. It’s a time when gynecologists are all men and nurses aspire to a trip down the aisle with a good-looking doctor. Abortion is illegal, the Beatles are still nobodies and society is on the cusp of profound change. Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean, Smash), Zoe Boyle (Downton Abbey) and Catherine Steadman (Mansfield Park) team up for the three-part series that had British critics hooked during its U.K. broadcast. The Times marveled, “Jack Davenport [is] a suave gynecologist with a glint in his eye, a revolver in his pocket and a hospital full of nurses ready to start swinging as the 1960s hit Britain.” And The Independent gasped, “Breathless looks absolutely lovely — it takes our breath away.”

Arts Art and Soul Series features provocative arts stories from across the country.

Have you ever looked at a bill for a health care procedure and been shocked by the numbers you’ve seen? Or wanted to find the best price for an elective procedure and been astounded that there’s no easy way to compare prices? KQED has launched a new project to help. We’ve joined forces with Southern California Public Radio and ClearHealthCosts.com to bring you Price Check, a community-created guide to health costs. This summer and into the fall, we’re turning to you, our community, to share — anonymously — what you have paid for some common procedures. We’re starting with mammograms.

A comprehensive database of health care prices does not yet exist anywhere, but you can help KQED and our partners create one. Once you’ve shared your costs, the tool will feed the information into a database so you can see how much mammograms cost elsewhere in the Bay Area and across California. Again, your submitted data is anonymous and confidential. Please join us. We’ll report what you share with us as soon as we have stories to tell. kqed.org/pricecheck

Price Check is funded by a Prototype Fund grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Meet James DeRosso, whose devotion to ceramics took a ghoulish turn when he discovered the creepy joys of monster making. He’s just one of the artists featured in Art and Soul, a series featuring smart, provocative arts stories collected from PBS stations around the country. From Texas, Ohio, Colorado, New York, Oregon and beyond, these artists’ work is as inspiring to us in the Bay Area as it is to the folks in their home communities. Watch Art and Soul Monday, August 18, at 11:30pm and August 19–22 at 11pm on KQED 9.

Math in the News KQED’s multimedia resources use current events to help teach essential math skills.

Join KQED at the Sixth Annual Disability Awareness Night

KQED Public Television

The news is chock full of numbers — journalists frequently rely on math to tell stories, deriving narratives from data sets. It follows then, that news is a great lens through which to teach statistics, percentages and other essential math skills. Last spring, KQED’s News Education program was invited to participate in an extended multistation project administered by WGBH in Boston — with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — to produce relevant multimedia resources for middle school math teachers that explain current events through a quantitative lens. Since then, KQED has produced more than 50 interactive pieces, most of which have been published on The Lowdown, KQED’s news explainer blog. Topics range from traffic waves to immigration reform to credit card debt, and each piece includes animated videos, visualizations, cartoons or maps.

Hampton Court is the ultimate royal pleasure palace — embodying the indulgent and grandiose kingship built by Cardinal Wolsey and developed by Henry VIII. Through its rooms, chart King Henry VIII’s decline from fit young warrior to bloated womanizer and recall the vivid stories of the ladies who became his queens.
