Joana Carneiro is one of those precocious people who end up on virtually all of their field’s “Top 10” lists. The Portuguese-born conductor has been a prominent part of the Bay Area classical music scene since she became the Berkeley Symphony’s music director in 2009. Her collaborators include some of the world’s greatest classical music institutions and artists, such as the English National Opera, composer John Adams and director Peter Sellars.
Music has been a lifelong presence for singer-songwriter Diana Gameros, from her childhood in Ciudad Juárez to a fledgling career opening for Latin superstars, including Ximena Sariñana and the band La Santa Cecilia. Despite the struggles she’s encountered along the way — Gameros has spent 13 years struggling for legal immigration status — music continues to be a personal outlet that’s brought comfort both to her and to the Bay Area community she calls home.
Brittani Sensabaugh, best known by her moniker Brittsense, is an Oakland-based photographer documenting the vibrant lives in forgotten “melanated” neighborhoods. Dhaya Lakshminarayanan is one of the funniest people around. The daughter of South Indian academics who emigrated to the United State before she was born, Lakshminarayanan grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, OH, and Birmingham, AL, and was a Silicon Valley venture capitalist before she took an unlikely turn toward standup comedy.
A dancer with a law degree, Oaklandbased artist My-Linh Le (also pictured on the magazine’s cover) is no stranger to being at the intersection of unlikely things. With her newest endeavor, Mudwater Dance Theater, Le weaves together turf dancing, ballet and poetry in her typical fashion — with passion, love and delight in the unexpected.

Lenses and Light: Behind the Scenes With ‘Deep Look’
“We look for a story from nature that dramatizes a big science idea, something that’s relatable to people, but at the same time alien. Oh, and it has to be small,” says Elliott Kennerson, one of Deep Look’s producers. Deep Look films in a variety of locations, from redwood forests to deserts, from streams to oceans. “Shooting in nature is always a challenge,” notes Josh Cassidy, the series’ cinematographer and lead producer. “From a technical aspect, you’re taking expensive electronic and optical equipment out into inhospitable environments. Plus, filming wildlife is always unpredictable. Some days, the banana slugs or hummingbirds can’t be found. It’s all about flexibility and persistence.” Sometimes the producers have to take matters into their hands. For Deep Look’s episode about scorpions in the
4
Sonoran Desert, they filmed inside a terrarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. For the episode about diving water beetles, they set up an aquarium in an empty KQED office. “Each episode offers new challenges and chances to get creative when it comes to filming,” says Josh. “Deep Look is shot in Ultra High Definition, but what really gives the show its look are the lenses,” he adds. “My favorite by far is the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. By attaching to different researchers’ microscopes, we’re able to delve way beyond what’s visible to the naked eye, like watching in detail as a mosquito dug its proboscis into a researcher’s forearm and drank her blood.” Shooting in macro video requires a lot of light. Sometimes, the head of an insect will be in focus, but the rest isn’t. Explains Elliott: “You have to shine bright spots on
what you’re shooting, but live animals of any size don’t like bright light or too much heat. Our lights are cool, for one thing, and we also try not to expose animals to too much unnecessary brightness. We want them to just act normal.” Deep Look episodes take about six weeks to produce from start to finish. Typically, two to three hours of footage is filmed for a three-minute episode. Elliott explains that the high shooting ratio is often because “we run the camera in hopes of catching some critical animal behavior once conditions are right.” Don’t miss Deep Look’s new videos in August featuring caddisflies and their intricate rock cases and squirrels and their expressive tail movements. kqed.org/deeplook
Funding for Deep Look is provided in part by PBS Digital Studios and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Deep Look is a project of KQED Science, which is also supported by HopeLab; the David B. Gold Foundation; the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation; the Smart Family Foundation; the Dirk and Charlene Kabcenell Foundation; the Vadasz Family Foundation; the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the members of KQED.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, KQED has begun to chronicle local veterans’ stories — with videos and events — through the Veterans Coming Home project. This month, join KQED, the San Francisco VA Health Care System, Swords to Plowshares and the American Foundation for Suicide Preventionl for the Third Annual Veterans Mental Health Summit. Breakout sessions will focus on access to care and suicide prevention among veterans with “bad paper,” and LGBTQ and female veterans.
We are excited to announce that the placement of the KQED sign at the top of 50 West San Fernando Street, a landmark building in downtown San Jose, is underway. Installation of the sign is the final step in a recent renovation of KQED Silicon Valley. Improvements include a new radio studio and the creation of a Silicon Valley News Desk, expanding capacity for coverage of the area. With more than 100 reporters, editors and producers, including four San Jose–based journalists, KQED has increased its news and culture coverage across the Bay Area and, since 2013, has quadrupled South Bay reporting. KQED is honored to have its call letters grace one of downtown San Jose’s most iconic and historic buildings, and we look forward to continuing to fulfill our mission as a trusted media source in this ever-evolving part of the Bay Area.

SF Homeless Project logo: courtesy KQED.
So Well Spoken
Thousands of people are homeless in San Francisco, and across the Bay Area, even more lack shelter. Despite years of concern and millions of dollars of investment, the problem persists. Who are the people who live on the streets and on the edge of homelessness? Why have we failed to bring about lasting change? And are there solutions that offer hope for the future? As part of the SF Homeless Project — a remarkable media collaboration of more than 70 news organizations — KQED is exploring these questions and more. Since its launch on June 29, the project has been featured by leading news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and NPR. KQED’s coverage has included a question-and-answer piece about homelessness, a timeline on homelessness in San Francisco and a 360 video that lets you experience life on the streets of San Francisco. Holly Kernan, KQED News executive editor, noted in a July NPR segment that KQED’s coverage also looked at the “invisible homeless people living out of cars and on couches and those living one crisis away from being without shelter.” She also dismissed any notion that doing a project of this nature is advocacy, saying it’s all about journalism as the Fourth Estate. “Our role as watchdogs is to ask tough questions, hold politicians accountable and get good information to the public. “It’s our responsibility to convene community conversations, and that’s what we are doing with this project. It’s also our job to tell stories, and we’ve tried to give people a sense of the humanity and breadth of stories beyond the label ‘homeless.’” KQED will continue coverage throughout the year, keeping this project alive. KQED’s work, along with that of all the members of the SF Homeles Project, is being archived online.

The final season of Inspector Lewis begins Sunday, August 7, at 9pm on KQED 9.
On Q August 2016
Kevin Whately (r.) and Laurence Fox return as Inspector Lewis and Inspector Hathaway, investigating new cases of murder and other crimes in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford. In three new films, the detectives must contend with complex cases, new faces on the force and old wounds from family ties. With a new boss piling on pressure, will Inspector Lewis finally decide to end his policing career?

Learn which of the three finalists will ace the signature challenge — filled iced buns; conquer the technical — pastry they’ve all struggled with; and master the showstopper — a classic British cake in a multilayered presentation.
