“ The story teaches us ... that no matter how strong our love may be, it doesn’t obligate the object of our love to love us in return.”

KQED Public Television

John Neumeier—director and chief choreographer for Hamburg Ballet— blends dance, dramatic storytelling, and spectacle into a unique interpretation of the story. With choreography, sets, costumes, and lighting all by Neumeier, this ballet—as much theater as it is dance—takes the performers and the audience into deep emotional terrain. An evocative score by the young Russian American composer Lera Auerbach mixes haunting melodic passages with moody undercurrents, atonality, and dissonance. San Francisco Ballet received Neumeier’s rare permission to present the American premiere in March 2010. Audience response was ecstatic, and critics hailed it as “mesmerizing” and “moving.” Of all the famous writer’s stories, Neumeier chose this one because of its “very particular concept of love,” he says. “Love that is so strong that it can overcome boundaries, that it can transport her to new worlds, although it may seem to be self-destructive—

because the Mermaid re-creates herself at the cost of extreme personal pain. But the story teaches us at the same time that no matter how strong our love may be, it doesn’t obligate the object of our love to love us in return.” San Francisco Ballet prima ballerina Yuan Yuan Tan found a strong personal connection with the Mermaid, she says, in the character’s pursuit of unconditional love. “People dream about it. And [the Mermaid] tries to pursue it, and fails, but still believes in it.” Written between the lines of this fable about personal sacrifice was a far more personal dimension—Andersen’s own torment. According to Neumeier, many scholars believe that this story is likely Andersen’s most autobiographical work. The writer had a history of falling in love with women he could not have, and a few men as well. This tale of unrequited love could well be his own; shortly before he wrote it, he had suffered greatly at the marriage of Edvard Collin, a love interest who did not return his affections. “So in a sense,” Neumeier says, “Andersen’s disappointment [about Collin] is the jumping-off point for The Little Mermaid.” Neumeier has played on that fact, expanding the ballet’s story to include a representation of Andersen as the character of the Poet. Neumeier didn’t intend to depict Collin specifically in the character of the Prince; instead, he says, “the historical facts inspire and help to create a new Prince.”

KQED Public Radio

Those expecting a simple ballet adaptation of the Disney animated film The Little Mermaid will be surprised to find a complex and intense portrayal of unrequited love and the resilience of the human spirit in San Franciso Ballet’s production of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale.

A New Telling of a Classic Tale

San Francisco has long been a haven for artists who are quirky, rebellious, and visionary—a reputation the city wears as a badge of honor. A vibrant new cinema verité documentary from KQED and Academy Award– and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Dan Krauss tells the story of an eclectic band of do-it-yourself artists mobilizing to help one of their own, whose warehouse—a combination artist hostel, performance space, and community center—is imperiled by the mortgage crisis.

Along the way, we’re introduced to three artists—a painter by night, a fire sculptor, and a circus aerialist— who embody the independence and feistiness that fuel San Francisco’s art scene and a community that historically has focused more on creative freedom than financial reward.

The Art of Doing It Yourself airs Friday, December 16, at approximately 11:09pm, following The Little Mermaid from San Francisco Ballet on KQED 9.

American Archive Project Enter an unmarked, windowless room on KQED’s third floor and you’re surrounded by ten-foot-high shelves full of film and videotape boxes. And that’s just the beginning. For the past six months, Robert Chehoski and two assistants, Stephanie Volkmar and Mary Jackson, have been working to take inventory of a mass of KQED archival material. After making their way through about 8,000 pieces in the first storeroom, they moved downstairs, to an even bigger space with twice as many assets. In addition, there are more than 10,000 of KQED’s original 16mm news films in a San Francisco State storage facility in Richmond, Calif. All the material has to be catalogued by the end of 2011. Why is this Herculean effort being made now? Thanks to a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, KQED, along with public media stations in all 50 states plus Guam and Puerto Rico, is participating in the American Archive’s Content Inventory Project. As Robert explains: “The main objective is to create a national database 4

and preserve pieces of historical media in formats that aren’t going to disintegrate” so they may be made available to the public, “and perhaps uncover some rare gems in the process.” Robert brings to the job more than a decade of experience as a film archivist as well as a lifelong fascination with film. “I collected 16mm film as a kid—going to garage sales and scooping them up for pennies. I’ve always been curious about why people throw film out, but hang on to flimsy plastic video tape.” Since there isn’t time to view each piece of film, his team has had to rely solely on labels and common sense. “We’ve found This Week in Northern California tapes in various stages of disrepair, with labels falling off,” Robert recalls. “The program is a valuable part of Bay Area history; making sure it gets in the database makes me feel good about the work we’re doing.” He adds, “There’s a fine line between hoarding and throwing things out without thought. I hope to help implement a policy on saving and keeping archives in order going forward.”

The Art of Doing It Yourself

People are probably familiar with KQED Public Television and Radio; tell me about Interactive and its work. Interactive creates the KQED websites and mobile applications and helps to make it easy for listeners, viewers, and visitors to access KQED whenever and however they want, from listening to KQED Public Radio on your computer to watching Check, Please! Bay Area on your iPhone to getting the latest news from KQEDnews. org. Interactive also produces original content such as “Bay Area Bites” and “Gallery Crawl.”

When is KQED Member Day at the Asian Art Museum?

What were some of the department’s noteworthy accomplishments this year? We launched the KQED iPhone app this fall. People have been very happy with it. We’ve recently revamped our “Climate Watch” blog. KQEDnews.org has done some original reporting that looks really great online, and our “MindShift” blog has really taken off in popularity. There’s a lot of information available on KQED.org. What does it take to manage the site? A team effort. We have programmers, system administrators, designers, and a whole group of KQED reporters, producers, and contributors providing content every day. What can we expect in 2012? We’re continuing to optimize KQED.org for mobile browsers. It looks good now; it will look even better in 2012.

You’ve worked hard to make KQED’s Interactive department among the best in public media. Why is your work important to KQED’s future? People are changing the way they use and interact with media. KQED wants to serve the information needs of the Bay Area community, on the device and interface of their choice. For example, we provide Twitter and Facebook feeds about the latest in news, science, arts, and food.

We’re also always experimenting with new services, for example we recently launched a channel for Google TV.

It’s been a busy year for KQED’s Tim Olson. As vice president for digital media and education, Tim oversees the online presence and educational outreach efforts of one of the country’s biggest public media organizations. In 2011, that meant coordinating the launch of a new iPhone app, managing the redesign of KQED News blogs, and directing KQED’s websites, which are seeing a record-number of visitors. Tim took time to answer a few questions about his team’s work and plans for 2012.

How’d We Get Here? For people who want to know more

Matthew Green comes to KQED from the Center for Investigative Reporting, where he managed the community outreach efforts for Dirty Business, a documentary about the coal industry and climate change. A recent Knight Digital Media Center Fellowship recipient, Matthew taught journalism in Oakland public high schools, ran a school garden workshop, and wrote for a number of local publications, including the San Francisco Chronicle and Oakland Tribune.

6

On May 23, 2011, KQED News reported on a U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring California to drastically reduce the number of inmates in its overcrowded prison system. As you listened, you probably had questions. Why has the number of inmates increased so dramatically in the last 20 years? Why hasn’t the number of facilities increased? What central constitutional rights are at issue in the case? In the course of reporting a story, journalists often lack the time or capacity to provide the explanatory background context of the issues. That is, how did things get to be this way? New from KQEDnews.org, “How’d We Get Here?” (kqed.org/howdwegethere) is a wholly unique news endeavor that aims to understand exactly that—how we got here. Educational, explanatory, and entertaining in scope, “How’d We Get Here?” helps demystify the causes and significance of some of the major trends and issues that impact the lives of Californians.

Writer Matthew Green provides an example: “If KQED were to run a series of reports on gang violence in the Bay Area’s inner city communities, ‘How’d We Get Here’ would fill in the holes of the story, examining the history of those trends and the intersecting variables at play— unemployment spikes, school dropout rates, etc. Posing questions focusing on the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of any given story, I attempt to provide clear-cut, relevant answers that can broaden readers’ grasp and appreciation of the issues.” It is more than just giving you the news. It’s about providing context to understand how we got here.

“This is an innovative project that’s unique to KQED’s newsroom,” notes Matthew. The end goal is to bring this project to the classroom, but it’s not just lesson plans for educators. “We’ll be delivering a better understanding of news to dual audiences—educators and high school students as well as the general public.”

Monday, December 19, 10pm KQED 9 American Masters Charles and Ray Eames: The Architect and the Painter The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames brought unique talents to their partnership. He was an architect by training; she was a painter and sculptor. Together, they’re considered America’s most important and influential designers. Their work literally helped shape the second half of the 20th century and remains culturally vital and commercially popular today. Revered for their designs and fascinating as individuals, the Eameses have risen to iconic status in American culture, but their influence on significant events and movements in American life—from the development of modernism to the rise of the computer age— has been less widely understood.
