Great Performances “Magical Mystery Tour Revisited” airs Tuesday, December 18, at 8pm on KQED Plus. Following at 9pm is the fully restored, original film.
Magical Mystery Tour was chockfull of thinly veiled references to psychedelia, anarchy and fantasy, all in the setting of a traditional British sightseeing bus outing to the seaside. This was a far cry from the innocent lovable mop-top japery of Help! and A Hard Day’s Night. Middle Britain had tuned in, but was a long way from turning on and dropping out — the nation was baffled and outraged by the film’s unexpected and uncompromising
surreal, nonlinear narrative. Paul McCartney appeared on The Frost Programme on rival ITV the day after the broadcast. He was called upon to account for himself and the rest of the group. Could it be that a pearl was cast before swine and then thrown away? To its small band of admirers, it was a masterpiece of surreal British wit and imagination in the tradition of The Goons and Alice in Wonderland.
KQED.org
Magical Mystery Tour is a showcase for six classic Beatles tracks, including “I Am the Walrus,” “The Fool on the Hill” and “Your Mother Should Know,” and features John, Paul, George and Ringo as themselves. They’re joined for a series of episodic mis-adventures by a cast of eccentric characters, including Auntie Jessie, tour director Jolly Jimmy Johnson, tour hostess Miss Wendy Winters and conductor Buster Bloodvessel.

Now with the film fully restored to the highest technical standard and with a remixed soundtrack, it’s time to tell the extraordinary story of Magical Mystery Tour: why it was made, how it was made and the circumstances in which it was made. To tell the story, this film calls on those who were there, most notably Paul McCartney, who had the original idea, and Ringo Starr, who is credited as the director of photography. John Lennon and George Harrison are represented through interviews over the years, through their appearances in the film itself, and in the copious and fascinating outtakes. Also sharing their reminiscences are Peter Fonda, Paul Gambaccini, Terry Gilliam, Neil Innes, Paul Merton, Barry Miles, Annie Nightingale and Martin Scorsese. Finally, this is a chance for the film’s admirers to have their say; its detractors have been given plenty of opportunities to have theirs. It provides a chance to evoke 1967 as it was — post-war Britain as much as the summer of love, when a new crop of artists with the Beatles at the helm came up with an alchemy that turned the ordinary and commonplace into the magical and mysterious.
KQED Public Television
Songs you’ll never forget, the film you’ve never seen and a story that’s never been told. In August 1967, in the wake of the extraordinary impact of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles made a film. It was seen in the United Kingdom by a huge audience, at 8:35pm on BBC One on Britain’s Boxing Day . . . and all hell broke loose. The story behind that film — Magical Mystery Tour — is revealed on the new Great Performances documentary “Magical Mystery Tour Revisited.”

What’s Your Favorite Holiday Food? With the holidays upon us, we asked our food-loving staff to tell us which holiday dish they most looked forward to when they were growing up. We also wanted to know what they look forward to now.
Tina Salter
Growing up in London there was no Thanksgiving, so for me, the holidays mean Christmas. On Christmas Day my mother roasted the turkey and served it with all the trimmings — sage and onion stuffing, sausage meat cooked in the turkey, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, mashed parsnips, carrots and lots of lovely thin gravy made with good turkey stock. But it’s the rich, dense, flaming brandy-covered Christmas pudding and crisp mince pies filled with yummy sweet mincemeat and topped with thick yellow double cream, that I remember with the most fondness. Since moving to the states, a dear friend of 35 years, my surrogate mother, always made the Christmas pudding from a very, very old Marks and Spencer cookbook. She died last year, so for the first time in a very long time, I will be using the same recipe to ensure the tradition lives on in my family. Oh, and I will make sure that we all give it a stir and make a wish!
Scott Shafer reporter,
Then? Two things, reflecting the fact that my mom’s side of the family was Catholic and my dad’s was Jewish. Our next-door neighbor made these awesome Christmas cookies. They were super thin and delicate — shaped like reindeer, Santa Claus and wreaths. I could have eaten 100 of them. Then homemade potato latkes with sour cream and applesauce. Classic Hanukkah. Now? A Yule Log from Tartine.
Suzie Racho
As a kid, I always looked forward to that first slice of pumpkin pie. It signified the start of the holidays! Now I look forward to having my husband’s butternut squash risotto.
Jenny Oh
When I was younger, we always had an array of Korean and American dishes on the table for Thanksgiving. There was turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy served alongside kimchee and rice. But my favorite dish was my mom’s cornbread stuffing, which she made with Spam. To this day, Spam — especially in the form of musubi — is one of my guilty pleasures.
June Ouellette
My mom’s post-Thanksgiving Filipino turkey paksiw soup with vinegar, cloves and brown sugar! As an adult, the same thing plus Brussels sprouts cooked any and every way.
Wendy Goodfriend
I grew up in New York City and the holiday food I remember most consisted of big meat and sugary carbs. For Hanukkah, my mother traditionally made a Belgian brisket thoroughly infused with the key ingredient — beer. Another classic was her baked sweet potato with pineapple chunks casserole topped with marshmallows. Now my celebration of the holidays is rooted in nature and the changing seasons. I indulge in the wealth and beauty of the amazing fresh produce available at farmer’s markets in the Bay Area.

The first annual Rise to the Occasion Youth Media Festival showcases their work.
In what year did the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour air on BBC One?
6
On a beautiful fall Saturday in Oakland, students, educators and families filled the Kaiser Center’s 400-seat theater to watch 20 compelling youth-produced films that focused on social change and the high school dropout crisis. The Rise to the Occasion Youth Media Festival was organized by KQED, along with other members of the Bay Area Youth Media Network (BAYMN), a consortium of more than 20 nonprofits that believe in the power of media production to engage youth voice, self-expression and empowerment as well as to inspire social change. Films not only expressed the complexity of issues that cause students to dropout of high school, they also explored the topics of health, race, sexual identity and discrimination. One of the winning films, Choices, produced by Takai Ginwright, Marielle Boland, Elliot Carrol, Justin Hawkins and
Elana Freeman, is viewable on YouTube (tinyurl.com/94zqbwh). In addition to the film screenings, students from a Bay Area Video Coalition project performed two songs from their critically acclaimed album, An American Graduate. You can download it for free from Bump Records: bumprecords.bandcamp.com. The festival was one of many American Graduate events held this year in the Bay Area. Funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the initiatve helps local communities across the country find solutions to address the dropout crisis. Find out more about KQED’s work, including student videos, photos and music, at kqed.org/americangraduate. Visit kqed.org/mediafestival to learn about future festivals, including the next BAYMN event coming in June 2013.
